Heedous Heart Is This Show’s Growing The Beard Moment
As tv tropes describes it in it’s laconic form, “ The point in a series' run where it gets notably better”. And in this case, Heedous Heart is where it really starts to pull in it’s full potential.
Let’s start with Miss Heed for a year before the series was finally released we had a campaign surrounding her and her escapades. During this year of getting to know Heed we are foreshadowed what she could possibly before the series properly dropped and get a gist of her character. er account as notable because of how she was using status as a superhero to be a social media darling and using her powers to brainwash both heroes, villains, and even civilians into being her followers, while also being subtly shown as someone who acts like she’s a selfless figure but underneath is just in it for the fame and rewards. Which again fit the theme of the series how heroes could be not so different from the villains, which was previously shown with Sunblast (the hero she replaced).
In Heedous Heart, we finally see all that campaign put to good use to portray an antagonistic character quite different from he others. And again Miss Heed stands out from the rest in the fact that even in contrast with the other antagonistic heroes, she actually gives off more of a vibe that she’s a villain acting like what a villain thinks a hero should be like.
This can first be seen when she makes her entrance in the episode hunting down Dark Phantom and Flug to add them to her collection of brainwashed followers. While most episodes start out comedically, this one starts out like it’s out of a horror situation which could be seen in a way. It feels like how you would introduce a villain rather than a supposed heroine, even if it was from a villain’s point of view.
And that assertion would be correct because originally she was a student at Black Hat Academy. And as you could see here she wasn’t exactly popular as well. And she still was someone who had attention whore tendencies.
Most important of all she was a former friend of Flug’s who was implied to have a crush on her. Again making her all the more personal than the other villains except for Black Hot but he doesn’t count because the crew wasn’t really emotionally connected as Flug was with Miss Heed.
And that connection makes an important theme in this episode because as shown much before in the instagram blog she is someone who is more into getting the rewards of superheroism rather than genuinely trying to help people. And the reason why she became a hero was so Goldheart, Flug’s archenemy could fall in love with her. And to do so she stole a part of Flug’s thesis to help her in her superhero career while being unapologetic about it.
Thus I feel Heed represents a shift into the show. While other antagonists relied on black comedy that is a signature of the show, her presence foreshadows that there is going to be more than just antagonist of the week shenanigans going on. Mostly because unlike the others, Heed brings personal drama into this and it shows in the way she uses and manipulates Flug into her plans.
Her presence also brings a more dramatic element into a previously comedic running: Flug’s hatred for Goldheart. In previous episodes we see him get mad at him when he’s mentioned, but here that connection is brought up in a more serious light. As said before, she became a hero to get his love and she is willing to do so by stepping over Flug in order to do so. And it’s hearing her admit she’s using him again is what makes him break from her spell.
And as said before he had a crush on her, but as the episode demonstrates there is some implication it wasn’t fully one sided since she was willing to kiss him on the full mouth. And it again not only adds to the story of setting her up so that she can break everyone from her hypnotism, but the fact that she was capable of having love with Flug but threw it away because she was starved for being in the spotlight and was willing to step over him to do so.
I have to say that this final scene clinches the episode. Because it’s a scene without 505 or Demencia. This is a case of Shooing the Clowns because it’s a scene that calls for pure drama not the usual dark comedy this show relies on. We Miss Heed stripped down from all the false imagery to see a sad woman who can’t love herself and Flug knows this because she believes she needs to be in there to get the help she needs. And one thing more is the fact that even after everything she has done he still feels sorry for her, which again tabs into the fact that even though Flug is capable of cruelty but he’s also got a humane side to him as well.
The post-credit scene with Goldheart. Just like the intro, it has an ominous feeling to it all, unlike how other previous outros were more comedic. Just like the opening of the episode, it’s an implication that there is something more going around in the background due to Flug and the other’s meddling. And it is hinting at a myth arc that could encompass a good portion of the series.
In conclusion, this episode really is a growing moment and I hope we have more incredible episodes like this that can rely on being capable of having dramatic episodes.
