If anyone watches New Amsterdam, there’s a very brief abortion plot line that’s similar in that it wasn’t a desperate last resort situation. The character in question just didn’t want a baby, so she got an abortion and she was chill about it.

It’s an otherwise emotionally charged episode bc it confronts Roe v. Wade being overturned, but that plot line was done really well imo. I actually noticed when watching it that it felt really refreshing that it wasn’t a secret or punitive, just another medical maintenance procedure. Idk, I feel like it also represents the idea OP’s talking about

Okay i think it's time to go on my crazy ex girlfriend abortion rant that I've been thinking about for like 3 years.

Because i find that even in progressive media that shows abortion as good and important and normal still show it as, like, a punishment. Like the person getting the abortion has to because they behaved irresponsibly. They had sex with someone they shouldn't, or engaged in adultery, or it's a teen pregnancy. And of course, those sorts of stories should be told, because that's reality for a lot of people, but it does leave a distinct flavour of 'you did the wrong thing and now you have to be punished'

Which is why i find the abortion subplot in crazy ex girlfriend so incredible, because Paula Proctor is not the sort of character who gets abortions. She's already a mother, she has a good relationship with her husband and a stable home life. Having another child would put a strain on their finances but wouldn't be impossible. She doesn't necessarily "need" an abortion. But she gets one, because she is trying to improve her career by going to law school and having a newborn would make that so much harder. And that's it. She gets the abortion, and goes on to become a successful lawyer, and she clearly loves it, and it's clear that she made the right decision for herself and her family. She is a lot happier than she would have been if she had decided to go through with the pregnancy.

I've never seen anything like that before, but it's so important to portray abortion not as a last resort option, but just as an option.

“please.” elizabeth turns her eyes to lauren hopefully, monitoring carefully for a change in her friend’s expression. if she can at least get lauren to agree, she’s certain floyd will follow after. as much as floyd tried to hold his silver-plated shoulders high with pride, he had always been much less a leader than a follower. she distinctly recalls he always played the servant when they were children.

lauren opens her mouth as if to argue back, but she shuts it, looking back and forth between the pair instead. when elizabeth raises a brow and encourages her to respond with a pleading hum, lauren’s hand drops from its place on her hip with a sigh. “look,” lauren signs, “even if i said yes, i don’t know if leyla will even agree. she hasn’t hurt her, but she was the one who saved her. how do we know she won’t just siren song us?”

“she didn’t hurt the men who attacked her, did she?” elizabeth challenges with an arch of her brow.

“… no.”

“then, she won’t hurt me.” she signs, hands sharp with conviction. lauren and floyd glance between eachother, not looking so sure. “we can trust her. i don’t believe she is as bad as everyone makes her out to be.”
