15.08.22
Checked out of the apartment on Rue Jouye-Rouve this morning and bid my comrades farewell as they move on to Portugal and I move into the twilight years of my trip. The end of summer and start of life and work in England has begun to brood over me now, causing irregular moments of nausea, but the splendour of Paris remedies this for now. At the time of writing I’m sitting at a cafe atop Parc de Belleville in the north of the 20eme. The park, relatively new in contrast to the city's other parks, is the highest in Paris. Consequently it provides a view not unlike the one from Sacre Coeur but unlike in bother. Quite the opposite rather: half past 9 and only my seat and another of the many seats are taken. The cafe chairs and tables, graffitied walls and a postcard view of the Parisian skyline forms the scene in front of me: a microcosm of the city, and an excellent place to kill some time. The tables slowly fill at the cafe with a jump in numbers after 10:30. Patrons smoke their gauloises and drink their coffees, mostly on their own, and stare in silence at the street and surrounds. No where else are people more seemingly content to focus on their thoughts, or their surroundings, to pass time. Rodin’s bronze thinker sits over across the river from me, but one need only look around at any time here to see him personified.

June 5 2022 Lafayette and Boulder
Tumblr media
Today at our Bouldlder Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (BVUUF) Sunday service it was Flower Communion Sunday.  This is one of my favorite services of the year. It was lovely to see all the flowers everyone had brought, all the different shapes and colors. It is a tradition celebrated by Unitarian Universalists around the world in honor and memory of Norbert Capek and the amazing example of the strong spirit of this great man who was killed by the Nazis during the occupation of Czechoslovakia.  While the story of Norbert Capek is tragic and sad his legacy is uplifting and beautiful.
Tumblr media
According to the Harvard Square Library:
“Norbert Fabian Čapek was born June 3, 1870 in the village of Radomysl in Bohemia (then a part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire). He was a raised as a Roman Catholic (then the dominant state-supported religion), but became a Baptist at the age of eighteen, and soon thereafter began a career as a minister, missionary, publicist, and composer of hymns. He served a congregation in Saxony for three years, then moved to Moravia, where he established a new congregation. In 1901 he was elected chair of the Union of Baptist Churches of Moravia and Slovakia. He published religious journals and became the assistant editor of a popular literary magazine. His religious stance became increasingly liberal, influenced by the “social gospel” movement of Walter Rauschenbausch and by the study of radical Christian movements in Czech religious history.
Tumblr media
Čapek first became interested in Unitarianism in 1910, as a result of a meeting with Tomas Masaryk (then a professor, later to be President of Czechoslovakia). Čapek tried that year, without success, to get the American Unitarian Association to support his efforts to promote liberal religion.
At the beginning of World War I in 1914, Čapek moved to the United States, after being advised that he was in danger of arrest by Austrian authorities because of his nationalistic and anti-Catholic writings, Early in 1915 he was tried for heresy by a Baptist tribunal, but acquitted, and for the next three years he was pastor of the First Slovak Baptist Church in Newark. During this time he organized an alliance of the various Slovak associations in New Jersey, and was active in the movement for Czechoslovak independence.”
Tumblr media
From the First Unitarian Church of Essex County website:
Maja V. Oktavec, born April 8, 1888 in Bohemia, came to the United States in 1907, obtained a degree from the Columbia University School of Library Science, and in 1909 went to work at the Webster Branch of the New York Public Library.   In 1914 she was put in charge of its Czech section.   There she met Norbert Čapek.   They were married June 23, 1917.   (Čapek had already been married and widowed twice, and had nine children.)   Maja resigned her position at the library a week after their marriage.   They bought a home in Belleville, and in 1919 Čapek became pastor of a small congregation there.   But in September of that year, having come to the conclusion that he could no longer be a Baptist, he resigned his pastorate.”
From the Harvard Square Library:
“At the end of World War I, Czechoslovakia became independent, and many Czechs decided to leave the Roman Catholic church. Čapek was eager to return to his native land and play a part in its spiritual reawakening....He and Maja... had joined First Unitarian Church of Essex County... The minister, Dr. Walter Reid Hunt, learning of Čapek’s intent to return to Czechoslovakia, arranged for him to meet the president of the American Unitarian Association, Dr. Samuel A. Eliot. By May, Čapek had a commitment from the AUA to support his work in Czechoslovakia...He and Maja embarked for Europe June 30.”
From the First Unitarian Church of Essex County website:
“By February 1922, Čapek had organized the Prague Congregation of Liberal Religious Fellowship, and the services were soon drawing standing-room-only crowds.  On June 24, 1923, the first Flower Communion was celebrated. Maja was ordained as a minister in 1926.   For several years the fellowship met in rented halls.   With financial help from the AUA and the British and Foreign Unitarian Association, they acquired and renovated a medieval palace. In 1930 the Unitarian Church of Czechoslovakia was officially recognized by the Czech government.
In 1939, shortly before the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Maja Čapek left for the United States to lecture and raise funds for a joint Unitarian-Friends program to assist endangered refugees and internees.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On March 28, 1941, Čapek and his youngest daughter Zora were arrested by the Gestapo.   They were convicted of listening to foreign radio broadcasts.   Čapek was sentenced to a year in prison, but eleven months that he had already been confined while waiting for trial were to be counted in the sentence.   (Zora, who had not only listened to the broadcasts but shared notes of them with someone else, was given an eighteen-month term).   In the midst of a wave of executions and deportations of Czechs by the Nazis following the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich (the German official in charge of the occupied country), a Gestapo officer overrode the court's sentence and ordered that Norbert Čapek be sent to the concentration camp at Dachau, "return unwanted."   He arrived there July 5, 1942. and on October 12, 1942 was sent on an "invalid transport," and evidently killed that day with poison gas, though his official death certificate states that he died October 30 of a cerebral hemorrhage.
Maja Čapek did not learn of Norbert's death until after the war.   After her lecture tour, she served as a minister in New Bedford, Massachusetts, for three years.   From 1944 to 1950 she worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency, helping displaced persons settle in Yugoslavia, Egypt and Palestine.   She died December 1, 1966.”

The School of The Spirit teachers presented a lovely exercise in creativity.  Their clothing also was colorful and resembled flowers!
Tumblr media
During the service everyone was invited to come to the table containing a flower and take one other than the one they had brought.  It was a touchingly beautiful service and we all left with a reminder of the power of hope and courage.
Tumblr media
This evening we went to a potluck at our friends Barbara and Mark’s house in North Boulder.  Our other friends, Shoni and Gary, were there too.  Barbara, Shoni and I met MANY years ago at a Boulder Business and Professional Women’s meeting and have been friends ever since.  Our husbands joined our friendship over the years.  We had a tour of Barbara and Mark’s remodeled  house and yard and we were lucky that the weather was good enough, at least at first, to eat outside.  It did begin to rain when we were finishing so we went inside to have dessert there.

We’ve had a great day so far and it’s only 4pm. We had a good breakfast at our hotel and then headed out to tour Trenton with Shaun. Totally gorgeous river walkway and harbour. It’s not easy to see but like 60+ swans we’re hanging out in the bay that is pictured. It’s a turtle sanctuary so possibly turtle hatching day? They eat turtles apparently.
On our walking tour of Trenton, an older guy started chatting to us from a really cool/weird blue house across the street. Turns out he’s an oral historian. He invited us to come see his garden (pictured) and then come inside to see the largest private collection of military items in Canada! It was epic. Gas masks from both world wars and Afghanistan as well as a German one. He had tons of stories as he’s spent his life collecting WWI and WWII vet stories. It was wonderful! And super random. This is what vacations are all about!
Then we made our way to a local flower farm. Glorious! Off to Belleville with its ton of churches, including very old ones (1853 is the date for the dark brick one with the copper.)
We also hit a local farm store with like everything I can’t eat but want to! Sort of a torturous experience but the smells almost made it worthwhile. Lol. We had to go there as Walmart is closed. Just closed. It’s a holiday so….? No sign or anything. Just not open…. Ah small town living lol
We’re checking into our Airbnb armed with some local breakfast fixings and a dream in our hearts of calm serenity next to Moira River. Will update tonight again.

Cherry blossoms or Japanese cherry or Sakura are flowers on trees of the genus Prunus. Very common in Japan and also China & Korea, Washington DC was the recipient of over 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Tokyo Japan with US First Lady Helen Herron Taft and Viscountess Chinda wife of the Japanese ambassador planting the first two. These are not from DC but rather Newark & Belleville’s Branch Brook Park which also holds an annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Essex County New Jersey featuring many of the 2,000 cherry trees donated by Caroline Bamberger Fuld co-founder of Bambergers retail department stores. - [x] #developportdev @gothamtomato @developphotonewsletter @omsystem.cameras #excellent_america #omsystem @bheventspace @bhphoto @adorama @tamracphoto @tiffencompany #usaprimeshot @mpbcom @newjerseyisntboring @newjerseyisbeautiful #omd #tamractales @kehcamera #microfourthirds #micro43 @essexparks (at Branch Brook Park) https://www.instagram.com/p/Co0xBL7vwXl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Put Your Head On My Shoulder
Chapter 3: Just a Kiss Goodnight
For the rest of the night, Gerard and I walked the streets of Belleville. We took a walk into town and pretended to window shop like it was midday. We even looked over the closed flower shop and maybe stole a flower or two. Outside of town, we skipped down a trail together, hand in hand. Our little journey ended at the Passaic River. Across the water, we could see the lights of Arlington. About a mile to our left was the bascule bridge. We could have gone there, but it was late and I'm sure Gerard didn't have the energy to go climb up a bridge with me.
We sat in the tall grass together on a small hill overlooking the river. Most of our chatter has been replaced by a comfortable silence by now. Exhaustion has got the best of us.
"Thank you for tonight, Frankie," Gerard murmured. This broke our silence. I shifted my gaze over to him. This exact moment brought me back to when I first met this man. The moonlight softly highlighted every sharp feature from his browline to his chin. I think I'm falling in love again.
"Of course," I replied. Oh, before I forget... I dug into the pocket of my jacket and produced the second corsage I purchased for Gerard. I took his hand so that I could slide on the corsage. It fit pretty well to my surprise.
"Oh, you-- you bought one!" He seemed genuinely surprised. He lifted his wrist slightly to view it better. I hope he noticed the flower I picked.
"I picked out the pansy," I explained. "It was the flower you liked, right?"
I never got an answer. Gerard was moved to tears at this point, but why? Was the gesture too nice?
"Gerard?"
Still no answer. Instead, I received a tiny cry.
"No one has ever been this nice to me."
Those words struck my heart. No one? I moved closer to him and took his hand into mine. As I laced our fingers together, he brought his gaze onto me. "I've lived the cliche unpopular high school life. I wasn't like the other guys, you know? I liked art, I liked music, I liked fashion. To this old-school town, I was just some weird kid, some outsider. I never felt like I belonged. On top of that, I could never find any friends. My only friend was my brother. He's younger than me, about 3 years. Only he understood me and liked the things I liked. And since I never had friends, I never got a girlfriend. I had thought girls never liked me, so maybe...maybe boys did. That was a mistake on my part," He frowned now and looked away. "Those idiotic jocks...you don't want to know what they did." His brows knit together. Whatever they did, it must've been an awful experience. I squeezed Gerard's hand. "It's why I dropped out early and became the mess I am today. I mean...look at me—" He gestured over himself with a disgusted look. "I'm wearing a skirt! Only girls wear skirts."
As soon as those words left his mouth, I shook my head. "We can wear skirts too," I said calmly. "Besides, I think it fits you. You look stunning." Gerard looked me in the eye again. This time something completely new was on his face. Was that love?
"I can't possibly look great," He muttered. Oh, what will it take to get through his thick skull? I was done with the "attempts" and the questioning. I wanted to feel something new. I'm sick of the doubt and worry that always held me back. This time I'm going all in. I gave Gerard's hand another squeeze as I leaned over to plant a soft kiss on those lips I had always stared at.
Kissing another man was different than I'd imagine. I always thought it would be the same as kissing a woman, but boy was I wrong. It almost felt as if I were kissing myself. Gerard wasn't just any normal man though. His lips felt soft yet a little on the wetter side. It's like they've never seen a chapped day. The only strange part about this was that it felt completely natural. I thought that if I gave in, the Heavens would open above us and the angels would smite us for a homosexual act. However, that never happened.
I parted our kiss now, and as I sat back, I noticed Gerard has been moved to tears. He was happy though. He wore a thin, curved smile at me, and it felt genuine. At that moment, I felt as if my feelings have finally been reciprocated.
"Where have you been my entire life?" He whispered. "I wish I knew you before..."
"Me too." My answer surprised me. For some reason, I did wish I had met Gerard before all of this. Though tonight was magical, I wished we had more time together.
Gerard let my hand go so that he could cup the side of my face. He still wore that thin smile. His eyes glanced over every feature of me. "You're always saying I'm beautiful, but I think you're the beautiful one, Frankie. You don't give yourself enough credit."
"Neither do you."
He laughed softly. "Oh, there's nothing to like about me," He said. Now his eyes focused on mine. "If only I could draw you right now. I think you'd see how beautiful you are then."
How I wish we could stay in this moment forever. I would be happy to escape the daily hustle and bustle of my everyday life to live a more carefree life with Gerard.
"Do you have a place?"
"Of course I do!" Gerard laughed at my question. "Do you think I just roam the streets like a homeless person?"
I blushed, embarrassed. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend you." Gerard waved me off as if to dismiss my apology. He stood up now, but our hands were still holding one another. Not a word escaped his lips as he led me back into the heart of Belleville. We took all sorts of twists and turns on the streets before coming across a small, rundown neighborhood. Although its appearance wasn't the best, it also wasn't the worst neighborhood in Belleville. It was livable, and that was all that could be said about this part of town.
Alas, we reached the place Gerard has been leading me too. Appearance-wise, I could tell it was in a much better condition than the other homes we passed. It had a new coat of paint on its siding and front porch. The roof looked reshingled as well. I took notice that the lawn was freshly mowed too. At least some people had some decency.
I followed Gerard up to the porch. Before we stepped inside though, I took a hold of Gerard's arm. "Is anyone else staying here?" I needed to ask in case I had to introduce myself.
"Yeah, just my brother," He assured. "I'm sure he's just sleeping right now though." With those words hanging in the air now, he stepped into the house and led me through the hallway to his room. Once inside, I closed the door behind me as softly as I could. Near the bed, Gerard shimmied off his skirt and grabbed a pair of raggedy jeans off his bed. There was an assortment of different clothes scattered on his bed. Something about it was more artistic than messy.
"Sorry for the mess," Gerard said quietly. "I'm not really tidy."
"Me neither," I smiled. An effort to reassure him. I took a seat next to him on the bed and took a glance around the room. His room isn't really that bad. I think it's comfortable. Of course, it could use some cleaning. I rested my gaze on Gerard now and gave him a smile again.
"Did you wanna sleep?" He blushed, his head ducking slightly. I could tell he felt awkward, and honestly, I did too. "Sure," I said. "I can sleep on the floor if you want."
"No, it's fine," He blurted. "I mean, my bed's big enough anyway." He got himself situated underneath the bed covers. His eyes met mine afterward, and he raised a brow. Taking the cue, I shrugged off my jacket and untied my tie. When I felt I was comfortable enough, I crawled over to the other side of the bed and laid down. We were both turned on our sides to where we were looking at each other. There was silence for about a good minute until he spoke up.
"I wonder how Mikey's gonna react to you," He said with a growing smile.
I shrugged my shoulder and I gave him a slight smile. "I don't know, maybe he'll like me."
"Heh, well, he's shy, so talk carefully."
I nodded. We fell into another silence but it was more comfortable than awkward. I wasn't sure when I dozed off...

* justice smith, demi man + he/they | you know gabriel de leon, right? they’re twenty three, and they’ve lived in irving for, like, six years? well, their spotify wrapped says they listened to 1984 (infinite jest) by the used like, a million times this year, which makes sense ‘cause they’ve got that whole waking up in a body as heavy as the dead, emotions always on the verge of spilling over - you laugh before the punch lands, the belief that every encounter you have will be the last thing going on. i just checked and their birthday is october 31st, so they’re a scorpio, which is unsurprising, all things considered. ( james, 21, est, they/them )
hi im just reposting gabe’s intro bc its been a very long time n im starting a little fresh hehe. yes i do regret the text color bt im not going back.

hometown: belleville, new jersey.

biography.
it’s only rly ever been gabe n his mom n the little new jersey suburbs that r always the same no matter where they go. they dn’t speak abt fathers or brothers or spain or anywhere other than the now, and how its constantly changing bt oddly the same.
his mom’s name is sonia n we love her. she worked a lot as a single mom n p much hs done everything on her own ever since leaving spain.
they dn’t talk abt spain bt we cn talk abt spain n hw sonia hd grown up partially there n partially in the states n hw she’d originally planned to live there forever bt the man she’d fallen in love with ws involved in some. high class dangerous shit n it ws safer fr them to part even if tht involved leaving everything she knew n loved <3
bt its like. ok. bc she hd gabe <3 n they dnt talk abt it so it practically nvr happened. n she tries her best as a mom n usually tht is enough.
they moved around a lot just bc sonia is a very. flighty person. anxious bt nvr seems tht way is just always. tense. gabe didnt think she ws capable of relaxing fr. a rly long time.
she wld commute 2 nyc every morning n after school gabe wld climb onto the train n by the time he got 2 her place of work she’d be just getting off n they’d get a slice of pizza n sometimes they’d go somewhere like central park or coney island (just fr the novelty) bt most of the time they just got back on the train home w/ gabe either doing homework or napping on her shoulder.
when gabe got a little older he’d sometimes skip school n take the train after sonia had already gone so he cld spend the day in nyc. he liked learning bt didnt rly like school. he nvr properly fit in bc of the amt of times they’d move so it felt like nowhere ws. right fr him.
