Alive
Tumblr media
pairing: Johanna Mason x fem!reader
summary: Maybe, just maybe, being alive has its perks.
warnings: mentions of ptsd, trauma, panic attacks
District 7 slowly was coming alive—people returned to their work, children started roaming the streets again, and even the forest gradually became green. It seemed like the only one to stay grieving was Johanna. She never thought she was going to get better; the wounds were deeply engraved in her mind. But time passed, and they turned into annoying scratches—almost healed but still bleeding.
She had a new house now—the one the government gave her. Its bricked walls weren't overly hospitable, but Johanna had seen far worse than that. The house wasn't big, but it was close to the market and, more importantly, the hospital, so Johanna was fine with it. Here, her cherished isolation was disrupted by only one human being.
Mac was the loudest child Johanna had ever met. The boy, who was not older than ten, lived two houses away. On a mostly calm street, he raised hell every day with his old red bike. Sure, the little devil helped the old Ms. Lane get the milk from the market or get the letter to the post office quickly, but something about his loud laughter in the evening annoyed Johanna to no end.
Not Y/N, though. Johanna wondered how such vastly different people could live under the same roof. Ms. Lane called her ''Lovely Y/N'' and Johanna had to agree with the old lady for once. Y/N worked as a nurse; Johanna often saw her in the white halls of the hospital. She was just what Johanna loved about her District the most: someone with a big heart and working hands.
This type of people sang old songs in pubs after a day in the sawmill or chatted with their neighbours over a cup of tea on Sunday afternoons. The people Johanna remembered from her childhood, the people her parents and brothers once were. Y/N was just the type—she smiled more often than she frowned and laughed more than she argued.
It seemed distant to Johanna, like a tune she'd heard before but couldn't recall the words of. She doesn't belong among those people anymore. Not after all she went through. And every time Y/N appeared on the porch of Johanna's house with a warm smile, Johanna was reminded of that.
"Good evening, Miss Mason."
Y/N stands in front of her once again. She came right after work, a worn bag over her shoulder, a deep blue coat a size larger, hurriedly buttoned up. The little devil is also here; now, the boy shyly hides behind the woman, hiding his gaze.
''My name is Johanna.'' she clears. Johanna hates that she can't hold a civil conversation for once; her words definitely didn't sound polite.
''Yes, sorry. Johanna, I am so sorry about your flowerpot. Mac?"
''I'm sorry, Miss Johanna. It won't happen again.'' the boy mumbles, his head bowed in deep shame.
Oh, yes. This dumbass broke a flowerpot with his annoying ball this afternoon. To be fair, Johanna couldn't care less about that thing; it was empty anyway. Besides, she had a stupid habit of breaking everything in her house when angry, so sooner or later, the flowerpot would meet its fate.
''Don't worry about it,'' she mumbles, almost embarrassed to see Y/N's warm smile appear on her tired face once again.
''I thought we should buy you a new one, but I didn't know which one to choose. How about we go to the market on Sunday together, and I'll buy the one you want?''
Johanna freezes. The idea of going to the market on Sunday terrifies her. Then, most of the District gathers there. But if she doesn't agree, Y/N will think she hates her. Johanna can't allow it—the nurse is the only thing close to a friend that she has. Mason can't help but think how damn stupid it is not to be able to buy herself a pot. So, the choice is obvious.
''Sounds good!'' Johanna squeezes out. Her voice is harsh, but Y/N still nods.
''Great! At the corner at ten then.''
-
Y/N is already there when Johanna comes, and Mason feels at ease, distracted from anxious thoughts by a pleasant conversation. That is until they enter the square. It is noisy and too fast for her to keep up, and Johanna almost thinks of running away, but Y/N places a hand on her back.
''First, let's look at Greg's. They changed the aisle; it is closer to vegetables now.''
Johanna might feel like throwing up, but she still got her stupid pot and made Y/N laugh a couple of times, so, in her book, it is a win. Y/N seems to think so too. She takes two pieces of candy out of the bag.
''Would you like some? I stole it from Mac.''
''Do I look like a kid to you?'' Johanna resents.
She still takes it, of course. It's chocolate, for God's sake.
-
It is Friday; Y/N's shift ends fifteen minutes after Johanna's appointment with the doctor, so they walk home together. Y/N says she doesn't like walking alone, and Johanna almost believes her; after each session with a doctor, Mason leaves the room with bloodshot eyes. Of course, Y/N notices them too.
Johanna waits for her near a small shop on the corner, as she usually does. What is unusual are a few wet patches on the pavement. Johanna feels her heart drop. Its racing beat rings loud in her ears. Suddenly, the air doesn't want to enter her lungs anymore; Johanna grasps it again and again, feeling her knees weaken. Water drops had already found her head and shoulders, each one burning her skin.
That's how she is going to die, she thinks. The water slowly covers small holes in the road; Johanna's hands begin to tremble, chills covering them. She already can't feel her legs. Water, then electricity. Snow fucking got her. She can't escape him.
A pair of colorful shoes blocks the view of the road. Then, concerned eyes appeared in front of Johanna's. It's Y/N, Mason thinks; her figure is a slight blur. She says something, but it is quite hard to understand—the water is pouring down her face.
Johanna shakes her head. "I don't," she stutters, "I can't."
She loses Y/N's face again but feels her presence near. The woman places something cold in Johanna's hands, her voice ringing loudly in Mason's head.
"Breathe.''
And she does. In and out, in and out, until her vision isn't so clouded anymore and she can finally feel her sore legs. The rain doesn't stop, but it doesn't hit her anymore. Y/N is sitting beside her, holding an umbrella.
''Can you walk?'' she asks, her hair and clothes soaked.
Johanna only nods, feeling the usual sleepiness returning.
''Let's get you out of here then.''
-
Johanna sits on the old chair in the smallest kitchen she has ever seen. They are at Y/N's house. She is in a horrendous dress that Y/N made her change into; she can't remember the last time she wore one.
The owner of the house, if you could call it that, was nowhere to be found. Y/N claimed to go searching for the blanket, but it was highly suspicious—the house was too small for anything to get lost. Johanna wonders if she is calling the doctors now, or hiding in the bathroom with a knife in her trembling hands—the thought brings a smile to her face.
Still, she is not alone in the room—a pair of curious eyes watch her very carefully.
''Are you going to hide there all day?" she asks, annoyed.
The little devil leaves his not-so-well-thought-out hiding spot with a loud sigh. ''Y/N told me to leave you alone,'' he reveals. ''But you are at my house, so...''
The boy looks very confident in himself. He grabs a pear from the nearest bowl and slides onto the chair next to her. ''Why are you here?''
Johanna eyes him up and down. ''Your mom dragged me here, and I didn't have the heart to argue with such a beauty'', she shrugs.
''Mum?'' he exclaims, making a disgusted face. ''Ew! Y/N is my sister, you moron!''
''MAC!'' Y/N roars, returning to the room with a spare blanket. ''What did I say just two minutes ago?''
The boy rolls his eyes. ''Don't bother the guest.''
''And?'' Y/N looks at him sternly.
"And don't you fucking swear." Mac grins, stealing one more pear from the bowl before dodging the rag thrown at him.
Johanna snorts. "A lovely kid you have here."
Y/N sighs. ''He's a pain in the ass sometimes. But I can't really blame him. ''
Mason watches the woman place a kettle on the stove. She changed her wet clothes, but her hair is still damp. Y/N looks relaxed like this, even with a near maniac in her kitchen.
''Why are you raising him?'' Johanna looks at her curiously.
''Well, my parents were executed for supporting the rebellion. So there was not much of a choice.''
''I'm sorry.'' Johanna frowns.
She never thought about how much the revolution affected the people around her. Sure, the District was burned and bombed, but how many people lost their families as Y/N did? Like she did years ago?
''I like to think they were happy to die fighting.'' Y/N watches the droplet of water hit the window. ''You can stay for the night. I am leaving early, but Mac will be home.''
Johanna wants to argue, but frankly, Y/N is right. She can't even bring herself to look at the rain, let alone set foot outside.
''Thank you.''
Y/N nods. She doesn't talk anymore, deep in her thoughts. Johanna wonders what she has also missed.
''I had brothers too, you know. Two. Snow killed them after I won.'' Johanna bites her cheek, feeling her eyes water.
She had never told anyone before. None of the survivors
know where her family is, except for the doctor, but it wasn't really her choice to tell him.
''I miss them.''
''I do too.'' Y/N's eyes mirror hers - something in them makes Johanna's heart squeeze. ''Sometimes I think it should've been me. Mac would've been much happier without a sister than without parents.''
''Don't say that.'' Johanna scowls. ''You help a lot of people.''
Y/N chuckles. ''I don't do much. I am not a doctor.''
It's not what she meant, Johanna thinks but keeps her mouth shut. What did she mean by that anyway?
-
Johanna cleans for the first time in forever. It's refreshing, although she will never admit it. The weather is pleasant enough to keep the windows open, and Johanna thinks the sky is finally starting to clear. That's when she hears loud bangs on the door. There is only one person who knocks this loudly.
''What do you want, Mac?'' she asks, opening the door only to find a boy completely out of breath.
''Miss Mason, Y/N wondered if you could help us chop the wood?''
Johanna frowns. ''Is this why you were running here?''
''Yes.'' the boy nods.
Something doesn't add up, but Johanna has absolutely no wish to dig deeper; it's easier to say when Mac doesn't have something going on.
''Well, let me grab my axe.''
Johanna doesn't understand why the little devil keeps rushing her. Their house seems fine, with no fire or explosion in sight. When they approach, however, Johanna hears a familiar voice speak louder than usual.
''Mister Pitforest, I'm afraid I can't. I am working at that hour.''
''Oh, Y/N. Are you going to deny me the pleasure of your company? You know, my darling, it gets lonely these days without someone by my side.''
''I am very sorry to hear that, but I have to put food on the table.''
''Sweetheart, you don't have to worry about that. I will take good care of you and your brother—that's what old friends are for, right? So, what do you say?''
Johanna watches Mac's hands turn into fists when the man touches Y/N's shoulder. He is at least twice her age, if not older, and she is clearly uneasy.
''I believe she said no.''
Y/N turns to her, surprised. Johanna knows she probably looks like a mad woman with an axe in her hand and Mac hiding behind her. The axe feels natural in her grip - she still remembers how to use it properly.
''Y/N, don't tell me you know '', he motions toward Johanna, "her.''
''I do. Is there a problem?'' Y/N's face is stone cold, and Johanna can't help but think it was much more intimidating than a weapon in her hands.
''A problem? Y/N, she is a child killer! What would your poor father say to that?''
''And what would my father say to his friend trying to sleep with his daughter?"
The man's face grows red. ''I was trying to help you, ungrateful bitch.''
''One more word,'' Johanna warns.
The man throws a glance at her axe before quickly getting into the car. He is rich, Johanna thinks—not a lot of people can afford cars here. She watches the auto disappear in the next turn before turning to Y/N.
''You should've told me he was bothering you sooner.''
''He was a family friend.'' She shrugs. ''And a dick, apparently.''
Johanna chuckles. ''So, where's the wood?''
Y/N looks at her, confused. ''In the forest, I assume?''
''Mac told me you need help cutting it.''
Y/N laughs. ''That little shit.''
Johanna can't help but notice how pretty she looks like that.
''You don't look bad yourself, with an axe and everything. It suits you.''
Mason feels her legs take a step closer to Y/N, their eyes meeting.
''Can I?'' she asks, but Y/N is quicker; she presses her lips to hers.
It's calm. For the first time in years, Johanna feels calm. They pull away after a few moments, Y/N's arms still intertwined with hers—the one without an axe, of course.
''I haven't been hugged in years,'' Johanna admits.
''Well, that should feel nice then.''
They stay like this, just holding each other - as much as Johanna doesn't want to admit it, it does feel nice.
''Are you finished eating each other's faces?'' Mac asks, his eyes purposefully shut.
Johanna feels Y/N giggle in her chest. ''Tell him he has five seconds to run as far as he can.''
She smiles too, watching the boy vanish into the house. Maybe, just maybe, being alive has its perks.

Presents to myself from the Christmas Market
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Plus bonus winter wonderland view from my living room window!
I got to be there for "baby's first christmas market" as I went to the market with a friend of mine and her baby. That was pretty cute! The market was gorgeous as well, though unfortunately it was bloody cold and my back stiffed up on me. That was less... pleasant...
The christmas market itself was great though! They always have very artistic stalls with lots of handmade stuff. I had so much fun looking at all the beautiful things! If someone handed me 1000€ I could have easily spent it there and brought presents for everyone. As it is, I only bought one present and some presents for myself. Because I can!
I got myself some very mori kei-esque decor. The first purchase was a felted fairy/fae creature in a brown garment with a hazelnut hat. They look so precious! The second was a medium sized wooden stamp. I've actually got a bit of a collection started here - I bought four such hand whittled wooden stamps years ago as a teenager, because they look so gorgeous. Actually, I have a stamp collection in general but these are extra special with the wood used and their natural look. The texture and shapes are very pleasing. I decided to add stamp number 5 to the collection.
On the second (and final) lap of the christmas market I also had to buy myself a big wooded plate stamp. It's SO gorgeous!! I couldn't believe my eyes almost when I first saw it. And it was surprisingly affordable, for it's quality and size. I would have estimated about double the prize. I decided I'm worth to spend money on and took the beautiful plate home! ♥
I'm planning to do a "stamping session" sometimes next year. Hold me to it!!
Picture 1: A beautiful snowy view out of a window. You can see flat roofs covered in snow and many snow covered trees! A winter wonderland.
Picture 2: A hazelnut fairy/fae creature made from felt. They're wearing a long brown garment and a hat with two hazelnuts on it. Their scarf is a green hazelnut leaf. They look happy! They've been wrapped in plastic to transport them home safely.
Picture 3: A medium sized hand whittled wood stamp, with the pattern traced in white to show it better. The shape has a vague cone shape (like a tree cone) and the pattern is reminiscent of leaves and ferns. It's photographed on a knitted reddish-and-magenta coloured sock.
Picture 4: A close-up of a big wooden stamp - it's a plate about the size of two hands held next to each other. The pattern is again traced in white. It consists of interlocking flowers and ornamental shapes and leaves.
Picture 5: A weathered looking blue wall shelf is shown. It houses two flowerpots and a white bird cage, styled with fabric flowers and fake birds and crystals. There's some more decorative pieces scattered about. Newly added are the medium-sized wooden stamp, the hazelnut fairy and the big wooden plate stamp. I also grouped a little plate piled with chestnuts and acorns in front of the hazelnut fairy and wooden plate stamp. They just go together!
Picture 6: A close-up of the new addition of the hazelnut fairy and the big wooden plate stamp, with the little plate filled with chestnuts and acorns in front of it.

Grills for Glass Windows: Why Are They Important?
The window is the focal point of any room, connecting the outdoors and indoors. It serves as a gateway to bring light and fresh air to the room. One of the most popular choices in home interiors is installing glass windows with grills.
Tumblr media
Why are Grills Important in Glass Windows?
Safety
Maintaining safety is paramount in any home. Windows and doors are the breaches from where intruders can easily enter. This is why installing grills on glass windows is a common practice in most homes. Installing strong grills not only keeps burglars out but also upgrades overall safety. It acts as a safety barrier if you have kids at home and avoids unfortunate accidents. Also, many times objects may fall through window ledges, which can be avoided with grill installation.
Fresh Air
A home requires sunlight and fresh air to eliminate the chances of mould formation and musty smell. Most people open the windows first thing in the morning to get some fresh air. Window grills are a great addition to avoid any insects buzzing in your home without compromising the ventilation.
Aesthetics
A home is an extension of your personality. The smallest details stand out and give character to the entire space. There are various grill designs available on the market, including geometric pattern grill, floral pattern grill, and contemporary design grill. It contributes to the design of the home interiors and communicates a clear design language.
Functionality
If you are a fan of interior décor, glass windows with grills will please your design sensibility. It creates room to hang some flowerpots and wind chimes and creates a vertical mini-green corner. Many people living in apartments use this vertical space as a canvas to channel their creativity. It makes the space functional and aesthetic at the same time.
With many designs, patterns, and sizes of window grills available, home interior enthusiasts are spoiled for choices. uPVC and aluminium window grills are popular amongst people as these grills are functional, practical, and aesthetic.

10 Low-Cost Interior Design Ideas for Restaurants | Online Blogger Pro
Top 10 Low-Cost Interior Design Ideas for Restaurants People are going out to eat lunch and dinner with friends and family. Weekend outings and parties are now very common ways to unwind after a long day at work. In addition, the culture is now looking for new tastes and foods to add to their day with a wide variety of enormous foods. People hope to have fun and spend time in one of the ambitious locations. In today's world, people place a premium on aesthetics and design. https://www.onlinebloggerpro.com/ Therefore, the majority of restaurants place an emphasis on interior design for both interior and exterior views. Nevertheless, some individuals are stuck at one point. That refers to places that are customized or on a budget. We show you how to use a unique, sophisticated, and contemporary interior in areas with limited budgets. Start to relate to the restaurant's view and food while planning the interior design and décor. We are now concentrating on the myth's current trend. Since the food naturally has a point on the decoration, we will now add a coat to make it easier to see. The unfinished interior wall structure will give the room an ethnic look and artistic view, and the right lighting and ceiling will make the room feel more peaceful and romantic. It works well in bars, the coffee shop, and more. Wall Painting The color selection is crucial to the decoration. It conveys the restaurant's atmosphere and beauty. With standard ceiling lights, the view will be enhanced by subtle color. Customers will be called frequently if double- or triple-colored wall paintings are used in the theme base concept. Traditional Setup With the advent of the modern era came changes to the restaurant's layout and view. People, on the other hand, are used to seeing old-fashioned or traditional view setups like a wooden table, a door made of glass, a handwritten menu board, an outside sitting table, serving on steel plates, and more. By using old things, you can make people happy visually. Furniture that can be mixed and matched is one of the restaurant's most important assets. You might get a lot of help with the decoration from the furniture. You can arrange the table in a variety of ways, from two to four-seat configurations to corner seats, window views, and comfortable chairs. Make Beauty Place Despite the fact that a plan calls for arranging beautiful things with a limited budget, corner flowerpots in varying sizes, hanging planets on the wall, and small pot trees and flower washes on each table at the center will enhance the beauty of your restaurant. Floor Design: Why Should Floor Design Be Important? One of the main designs for the attraction is the floor. The attraction will be created by using marbles in different arrangements and styles. As a result, if your restaurant has a lot of space, you'll need to make some arrangements, like small fish floor tanks and flower plants. An essential component of industrial decoration is furniture for an optimal industrial look. We broadly divided into distinct vintage, urban, modern, and rustic styles. Natural materials, such as wood or metal, can be used to create the look. In contrast, decorate with soft colors from wall paintings and thick glass plates and cloths to create a natural atmosphere with a whimsical appearance. Keeping your interior budget to a minimum can be simple. The interior design and decoration options are available for every budget. Add an interior view to attract customers. The unavoidable appearance and feel will be created by the entire structure. When you get in touch with the Interior, be clear about what you want and where your restaurant fits into the market. https://www.onlinebloggerpro.com/

When a Trickster Meets a Trickster {Loki}
Tumblr media
Plot: You're a trickster but Loki doesn't know it so you mess with him for your own entertainment.
Character: Loki x Plus Size Reader
Requested by marvelous-imagines-for-all
With a look around, you puffed out your cheeks and blew out a long breath. You were bored. Your father, King of a nearby realm, was currently having a business meeting with Odin, King of Asgard. He had promised that you might find something fun to do around here whilst he conducted his business but three days in and you weren't a fan of Asgard. Sure, it was pretty but there was just no one that could keep up with you. That was until Loki, son of Odin, came back.
You squinted, sitting up and leaning forwards from your chair to try and get a better look at the dark haired Prince. You'd heard the rumours of the devilish Prince Loki. You knew of his powers, of his trickster tendencies, and whilst that made most people distrusting of the young Prince, it quirked your interest. A trickster meant that he knew how to have fun, he knew how to entertain especially if it was at other people's expense. Something that was also well known about you was that you, too, were a trickster though you didn't have quite the reputation that Prince Loki had.
You decided that you were going to approach him and play with him. With your head held high and with a charming smile on your face, you began to walk over to him. It wasn't long before his eyes were on you, eyeing you up and down. Years ago, you wouldn't have been so comfortable with someone (especially someone of his calibre) looking at your full body. You were curvier than most, you were plus size and you weren't ashamed about it. You were you and if anyone dared to think any less of you because of your body shape, you would smite them. Loki's eyes didn't look at you in a judgemental way but in a curious way. Who is this confident thing striding to me?
"Hi," you said with a wide grin, "I'm bored and I've heard that you're pretty fun, wanna go for a walk?"
"And who might you be?" He asked with a smirk intrigued by your confidence in speaking to him.
"I'm..." It was in this moment you decided that you wanted to mess with him a little bit. Why tell him your true identity? Why not trick the trickster? "I'm Miriam."
"Are you part of King Leion's subjects?" He was referencing your father.
You nodded, "I'm a handmaiden to (y/n)."
"Ah," Loki said before eyeing you again, "What did you have in mind for us to do?"
You shrugged, "You're the God of Mischief, let's go cause some chaos."
"I like the way you think."
It didn't take long before you and Loki had found a pub to sit in. Loki was showing off, he always showed off when someone asked him to or even if someone didn't ask him to. He enjoyed the way you laughed when he tricked someone, pulling chairs away or moving their belongings to trick them.
As he was busy trying to trick someone else, you decided to trick him. Loki reached for his pint, eyes on someone else, ready to take a drink. You blinked, switching the pint and the flowerpot that was on the table, so that when he took a drink, he got a mouthful of soil and an eyeful of dirt. Your laughter was booming as he coughed, chucking the plant causing it to smash on the floor, and reached for his actual pint to take a drink.
"What happened?" Someone called over.
"He needs to keep his eyes on the prize," you teased, "Too wrapped up in other people, made a silly mistake, that's all." As Loki recovered, he couldn't help but feel as though he hadn't made an error. He had an issue with making errors, he could never really accept when he made a mistake. However he shrugged it off and rolled his eyes before continuing to mess with people.
It was a while later when the two of you had gotten bored of the pub and had moved onto the market place near the fountain when you next tricked Loki. He'd been looking at some books and had picked one up to buy but when he went to pay, he reached into his pocket and pulled out... flower petals?
"Maybe they're from the pub?" You joked.
Loki frowned, throwing the petals on the floor and reaching into his other pocket for money. "Hang on a minute," Loki said, eyes narrowing as the puzzle pieces began to slot together inside his mind. He recalled a fact that his father had told him a while ago; King Leion has a trickster daughter called (y/n), maybe the two of you will get along. Loki's lips quirked upwards into his signature Loki smirk as he looked to you. Could it be? A trickster tricking another trickster? If it was, if you were another trickster, was a devilish trick that Loki would get such a kick out of.
You had told him that your name was Miriam, a hidden secret to keep him at bay at least for a while. As you fiddled with something on the stall behind him, not realising that in his mind he was uncovering your tricks, he asked, "Oh, (y/n)?" You hadn't expected it and you'd been too distracted so you turned around.
"Yeah?" When you looked at him, you knew that you'd fucked up, "Shit."
Loki's smirk stretched out into a wide cheeky grin as he laughed, "I caught you." He stalked towards you like a predator stalking its prey, "How long did you think you could keep up the act?"
You smirked, "I was wondering how long it would take you to notice... My father said you were clever but I think he must've gotten you mixed up with someone else."
Loki grinned widely as you poked fun at him, "Ooh," he said lowly, "I think I've finally met my match... What do you say to causing more chaos together?"

The Old Langford Greenhouse
Amelie Hexwell glided into the old Langford Greenhouse in much the same way she glided into most disreputable establishments: her heavy skirts swishing forebodingly and her expression one of polite disdain. She was one of those delightful people who believed that being brutally blunt was a virtue, and from the stern set of her mouth, it looked like she would be having words (civil, but barely so) with Maren Langford.
At odds with these stern traits, however, was her hobby. Amelie Hexwell was an ardent anthophile. She loved all flowers on God’s green earth, from gaudy, spectacular orchids to dainty begonias and violets, blushing roses and chrysanthemums to sweet scented june lilies. Murmured rumours in black markets and snippets of hurried conversation held under sputtering streetlamps had led her here, to this unsavory corner of the city where the flowers supposedly whispered among themselves, and sang when they thought no one was listening.
So far though, Langford’s was turning out to be a bit of a disappointment. The greenhouse, if it could even be called that, was in a state of utter disrepair. The only sign that it housed flowers was the grimy floor, upon which were strewn trodden petals of all shapes and sizes; a filthy, chaotic mosaic. Amelie looked around. A young woman in a furiously peach dress with white bows stood twirling her parasol near the back, staring up at the ceiling in awe. Hovering around her was a man in an outsized tophat (Amelie had a good mind to tell him that having a tophat so large was an affront to polite society) and a suit too fashionable for this terrible neighborhood.
Scoffing quietly to herself about young people and their ridiculous fashions, Amelie looked up at the ceiling to see what had captured the woman’s attention.
It was not easy to surprise Amelie Hexwell, much less shock her. The good woman had seen and done more than most her age, but nearly five decades of outrageously extravagant flower shows had not prepared her for Langford’s.
The flowers grew downward from the high ceiling, perfectly upside down. Tall, cheery sunflowers craned downard to kiss the patrons’ faces. Vines and creepers carpeted the ceiling, and small, white-and-blue blooms nestled among them like stars. Roses in shades of sunset and crimson clustered on thick rosebushes, tantalisingly out of reach. Crocuses spilled out of the ceiling like dizzy flocks of some exotic bird, in strange colours that Amelie could not name. Blues like early evening skies, magentas that looked red from one angle and maroon from the other, yellows and oranges like hard lemon candy; the ceiling was a riot of colour.
It was then that Amelie realised that aside from the peculiar manner of their growth, the flowers themselves were all terribly strange too. There was a rose that had a crown of wine-red petals, but lower whorls that were entirely cream. Here was a violet that had bright pink spots on it, round and regular as polka dots. Further ahead was a sunflower that was inexplicably blue, each silky petal covered in neat white stripes. Directly above her was a white lily so strangely patterned that Amelie could’ve sworn that it was lace off a bridal gown.
“Have you found anything that might interest you, madamé?” A silky, unctuous voice asked, and Amelie realised that the man in the ridiculous tophat was speaking to her. So this was Maren Langford.
Amelie Hexwell was, for the first time in her life, quite at a loss for words. Perhaps it was the heavenly aroma of the flowers that had intoxicated her, or perhaps it was the sheer wonder.
“You have a very interesting shop here, Mr.Langford,” she said eventually, sounding quite faint.
The man looked amused. “Indeed,” he said in a warm, shallow voice. Amelie felt a sudden urge to step out of the greenhouse and breathe in the stinking, polluted air outside. She was about to do just that, when the woman in the peach dress collapsed suddenly.
“Oh,” Amelie said slowly, as Maren Langford sprung forward to help her up.
“She’s quite unconscious,” he said cheerfully. “Not to worry though, I’ve got smelling salts and a sofa where she can rest in the back. Visitors are often overwhelmed by my beauties.” He hoisted the woman into his arms and disappeared into the backroom. Amelie felt vaguely that she should go with the man. It was something to do with impropriety, but she couldn't for the life of her remember what. It probably didn’t matter anyway.
Amelie craned her neck upward to look at the flowers again, now horrified by their beauty, but unable to look away. Her vision started to blur, and faces swam in and out of the mist. All young women, all dressed in fashionable summer outfits. A brown-eyed girl in a pink polka-dot dress, a blonde one in a smart striped jacket, a regal bride in a lacy gown, all screaming, or perhaps singing.
No, no. Amelie shook her head, willing it to clear. She would not faint, but she could not run either. She remained rooted to the spot, for minutes or maybe hours. Eventually, Maren Langford reappeared from the back room, holding something in his hands.
In a dainty flowerpot shaped like a kettle was a single peach rose, speckled with white spots like bows.

TOP 5 BUGS I WISH EXISTED
Because this is a thing I’ve always put a lot of thought into, and I guess you could call it speculative evolution because I like to think of bugs that are physically possible and fit into real-world lineages.
Tumblr media
1) Land Barnacles. I love the aesthetic of all barnacles and I wish I could just grow them in flowerpots. I think these would have to attract and feed on insects to survive that way, like venus fly traps. They’d also need a way to spread without ocean currents. I’m gonna say the larvae can cling onto passing animals, like ticks or plant burrs, and drop off where they need. I bet there could be at least one species that lights up to attract fireflies.
Tumblr media
2) Really big, long-lived flies. I want there to be flies as big as physically possible, so these would be between the size of a weta and the size of a coconut crab. I think this dung fly is the best looking kind of fly, so they’d be a lot like it. There’s no way they could actually fly, but there are several real-world flies without wings too. Maybe they’d have little nubby vestigial wings they just use to make a threatening buzz when they’re mad, because they’d need a good defense against predatory mammals, and I’d like to suggest a skunk-like spray for that. I bet we would come to call them “stinkbugs” more than what we currently call stinkbugs. Stinkbugs would probably follow herd animals around and eat their dung and not bother anybody. I like to think we would put them in a lot of cartoons and associate them with barnyard animals. (photo)
Tumblr media
3) slightly less big but still alarmingly big blood-sucking flies. Maybe more like the size of rats, and they’d burrow during the day but come out at night to drink mammal blood. They wouldn’t be especially interested in human blood, though, so they’d be like insect vampire bats and just kinda misunderstood. Hopefully they would accept pig blood from the meat market like I feed my pet leeches because really this is also a list of dream pets. They should have awesome weird eyes like some actual horseflies do. I bet we would put them in cartoons a lot too if they were real. (photo)
Tumblr media
4) bobbit worms but on land. I said this in another post about polychaete worms. I wish in addition to snakes we also just had snake-size biting worms. I guess they’d probably still prefer wet muddy environments. I just really want there to be biting worms that pop out of the ground like a scary jack in the box and freak people out. Not deadly or anything just something to keep people on their toes. They’d stay in the same burrow for decades at a time waiting for birds or mice to catch and maybe people would actually want them as natural pest control for their gardens and stuff. I’d just have a little row of them instead of a picket fence.
Tumblr media
5) a giant land slug like this slug. The size of those African land snails. The reason actual land slugs don’t get that big but snails can is that the shell helps them retain moisture and protects them from so many enemies, so again we have a defense problem to worry about. I don’t want to reuse “they stink like a skunk” so I’ll say these slugs probably just have the worst most awful taste ever, and to stay moist they’d probably have to be amphibious instead of completely terrestrial. The pretty colors would even be good to advertise their taste. Anyway that’s fine, we could all have them as pets and not have to taste them. (photo) I actually thought of more than five but then the post would be too long, maybe this should just be an article series
