Whatâs your favorite and least episode from Camp Camp from every season and why?
Season 1:
Favorite: Camp Cool Kidz
It's a fun episode and the line delivery is really fun, especially from David and Gwen, and I feel like its a good and legit first look at the campers and their dynamics together
Least favorite: Reingy Day
Should probably be obvious, but I hate Dolph , and if your punchline is literally "lol, just like the holocaust" you're just a shitty writer. Worst episode of the ENTIRE series and I always skip it in my rewatches.
Season 2:
Favorite: it's a tie between "Bonjour Bonquisha" and "Cookin' Cookies"
Both episodes are good, we get a better look into the Flower Scouts in em.
Least favorite: Quartermaster Appreciation Day
I'll be honest, I dont even hate this episode, but watching QM mackin on his sister is just an uncomfortable experience.
Season 3:
Favorite: Arrival of the Torso Takers
Best holiday special in my opinion; its spooky but fits SO well into the show that I can't even tell if it's supposed to be a canon episode or not.
Least favorite: Foreign Exchange Camp
Vera is so mid, this episode is SO mid. Season 3 is just miiiiid. Overrated episode with overrated characters, I'd honestly be perfectly okay with the writers implying they all went through their suicide pact, they're that mid to me.
Season 4:
Favorite: S4 has a lot of great episodes, "Panicked Room" might be my top episode of the series PERIOD.
Least favorite: Cameron Campbell Can't handle the Truth Serum
Not a bad episode, kinda funny at times, but Cameron is just a boring character to me here.

Keegan-Michael Key
Keegan-Michael Key (born March 22, 1971) is an American actor, comedian, writer, and producer.
Key co-created and co-starred alongside Jordan Peele in Comedy Central's sketch series Key & Peele (2012â2015) and co-starred in USA Network's Playing House (2014â2017). He spent six seasons as a cast member on Mad TV (2004â2009) and has made guest appearances on the U.S. version of Whose Line is it Anyway? on The CW. He also appeared alongside Peele in the first season of the FX series Fargo in 2014, and had a recurring role on Parks and Recreation from 2013 to 2015. He hosted the U.S. version of The Planet's Funniest Animals on Animal Planet from 2005 until 2008.
Key has had supporting roles in several films, including Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), Don't Think Twice (2016), and Toy Story 4 (2019). Also in 2015, he appeared at the White House Correspondents' Dinner as the Key & Peele character Luther, President Barack Obama's anger translator. Key and Peele produced and starred in the 2016 action-comedy film Keanu. In 2017, Key made his Broadway debut in Steve Martin's Meteor Shower.
Early life
Key was born in Southfield, Michigan on March 22, 1971, the son of black father Leroy McDuffie and white mother Carrie Herr. He was adopted at a young age by a couple from Detroit, Michael Key and Patricia Walsh, who were both social workers. Like his birth parents, his adoptive parents were also a black man and white woman. Through his biological father, Key had two half-brothers, one of whom was comic book writer Dwayne McDuffie (1962â2011). Key only discovered the existence of his siblings after they had both died.
Key attended the University of Detroit Mercy as an undergraduate, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in theater in 1993, followed by a Master of Fine Arts in theater at Pennsylvania State University in 1996. While at the University of Detroit Mercy, he was a brother of Phi Kappa Theta.
Career
Mad TV
In 2004, Key joined the cast of Mad TV midway into the ninth season. He and Jordan Peele were cast against each other, but both ended up being picked after demonstrating great comedic chemistry. Key played many characters on the show. One of his most famous characters is "Coach Hines", a high school sports coach who frequently disrupts and threatens students and faculty members. On the penultimate episode of Mad TV, Hines revealed that he is the long-lost heir to the Heinz Ketchup company and only became a Catholic school coach to help delinquent teenagers like Yamanashi (Bobby Lee). During seasons 9 and 10, Key appeared as "Dr. Funkenstein" in blaxploitation parodies, with Peele playing the monster. Key also portrayed various guests on Real **********ing Talk like the strong African Rollo Johnson and blind victim Stevie Wonder Washington. He often goes "backstage" as Eugene Struthers, an ecstatic water-or-flower delivery man who accosts celebrities. There is also "Jovan Muskatelle", a shirtless man with a jheri curl and a shower cap. He interrupts live news broadcasts by a reporter (always played by Ike Barinholtz), annoying him with rapid fire accounts of events that have happened frequently exclaiming "It was crazy as hell!" Celebrities that Key impersonated on the show include Ludacris, Snoop Dogg, Roscoe Orman (as his character Gordon from Sesame Street), Matthew Lillard, Bill Cosby, Al Roker, Terrell Owens, Tyler Perry, Keith Richards, Eddie Murphy (as his character James "Thunder" Early from the movie Dreamgirls), Sherman Hemsley (as his character George Jefferson on The Jeffersons), Charles Barkley, Sendhil Ramamurthy (as Mohinder Suresh), Tyson Beckford, Seal (originally played by Peele until Peele left the show at the end of season 13), Sidney Poitier, Lionel Richie, Barack Obama, Kobe Bryant and Jack Haley (as the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz). He also played female celebrities, including Phylicia RashÄd, Robin Antin, and Eva Longoria (as Gabrielle Solis on a Desperate Housewives parody).
Key & Peele
Key and his former Mad TV castmate Jordan Peele starred in their own Comedy Central sketch series Key & Peele, which began airing on January 31, 2012 and ran for five seasons until September 9, 2015. Key and his comedy partner Jordan Peele starred in an episode of Epic Rap Battles of History, with Key playing Mahatma Gandhi and Peele playing Martin Luther King Jr. The pair returned to Epic Rap Battles of History with the "Muhammad Ali versus Michael Jordan" battle, with Key portraying Jordan.
Key was introduced by President Barack Obama at the 2015 White House Correspondents' Dinner as Luther, Obama's Anger Translator, one of Key's characters from Key & Peele.
Friends from College
Key plays the most prominent male character, Ethan Turner, on the Netflix ensemble comedy Friends from College, about a group of Harvard University graduates and friends now in their late 30s living in New York City. He plays an award-winning fiction writer who is being encouraged to start writing for young adult fiction audiences.
Other work
Key was one of the founders of Hamtramck, Michigan's Planet Ant Theatre, and was a member of the Second City Detroit's mainstage cast before joining the Second City e.t.c. theater in Chicago. Key co-founded the Detroit Creativity Project along with Beth Hagenlocker, Marc Evan Jackson, Margaret Edwartowski, and Larry Joe Campbell. The Detroit Creativity Project teaches students in Detroit improvisation as a way to improve their communication skills. Key performed with The 313, an improv group formed with other members of Second City Hollywood that appears around the country. The 313 is made up primarily of former Detroit residents and named for Detroit's area code. Key also hosted Animal Planet's The Planet's Funniest Animals.
He made a cameo in "Weird Al" Yankovic's video "White & Nerdy" with fellow Mad TV co-star Jordan Peele. In 2009, Key hosted GSN's "Big Saturday Night", and has co-starred in Gary Unmarried on CBS. Key was a panelist on the NPR comedy quiz show Wait Wait, Don't Tell Me... on March 27 and July 24, 2010. Key has been in several episodes of Reno 911! as the "Theoretical Criminal".
Key and Peele were featured on the cover and in a series of full-page comic photos illustrating The New York Times Magazine article "Is Giving the Secret to Getting Ahead?" on March 31, 2013. A live-action video version was also featured on the Times' website. Key co-stars in the horror-comedy Hell Baby. Key is one of the rotating "fourth chair" performers in the 2013 revival of Whose Line Is It Anyway?.
In addition to Key & Peele, he also co-starred in the USA Network comedy series Playing House, which began airing in April 2014.
Together with his comedy partner Jordan Peele, Key played an FBI agent in a recurring role in the 2014 FX crime drama Fargo.
Key was involved in audio episodes for the marketing campaign, "Hunt the Truth" on the website for the video game Halo 5: Guardians, voicing a fictional journalist and war photographer named Benjamin Giraud, who investigates the Master Chief's background.
Key has had small supporting roles in numerous films, including 2014's Horrible Bosses 2, Let's Be Cops and the animated The Lego Movie, as well as Pitch Perfect 2 and Tomorrowland in 2015. Key and Peele are currently working with Judd Apatow on a feature-length film for Universal Pictures.
Key is one of several hosts of the podcast Historically Black by American Public Media and The Washington Post.
In the summer of 2017 Key returned to the theatre after what he characterized as a "19-year detour into sketch comedy" for a production of Hamlet at New York's Public Theater, playing Horatio opposite Oscar Isaac in the title role. Key, who is a Shakespearean-trained actor, fulfilled his lifelong dream to play Horatio and received rave reviews for his performance. The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney noted that Key's comedic skills were on full display, "...but his ease with the verse and stirring sensitivity [was] a revelation."
Key voice acted in The Star, the animated film based on the Nativity of Jesus. He later went on to voice Ducky in Toy Story 4 and Kamari in The Lion King.
In 2017, Key made his Broadway debut in Steve Martin's comedy Meteor Shower.
Brain Games
Key currently hosts Brain Games on National Geographic
Personal life
Key was married to actress and dialect coach Cynthia Blaise from 1998 until 2017. They were legally separated in November 2015, with Key filing for divorce the following month. He married producer and director Elisa Key (formerly Elisa Pugliese) in New York City on June 8, 2018.
Key is a Christian and has practiced Buddhism, Catholicism, and Evangelicalism in the past. Being biracial has been a source of comedic material for Key, who told Terry Gross in an interview for NPR, "I think the reason Jordan and I became actors is because we did a fair amount of code-switching growing up and still do."
Philanthropy
Key has worked with the Young Storytellers Foundation as an actor for their annual fundraiser alongside Max Greenfield, Jack Black and Judy Greer.

TIMOTHEE CHALOMET, 19, NONBINARY, HE/HIM ⥠welcome back to gallagher academy, CAMPBELL âCAMPâ DURAND! according to their records, theyâre a SECOND YEAR, specializing in ADVANCED ENCRYPTION and DRIVERâS ED; and they DID NOT go to a spy prep high school. when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of (dark circles under eyes, the scent of eucalyptus, running late, looking disinterested or confused, constantly writing). when itâs the (aquarius)âs birthday on FEBRUARY 18, they always request FRIED PICKLES from the schoolâs chefs. looks like theyâre well on their way to graduation. âż kara, 26, she/her, pst â
HIS STORY.
+ Home is on the southwestern side of France where the scenery consisted of salt farms and old windmills. Many of the village's buildings were whitewashed, and some, even the farmhouses, had ornamental towers reminiscent of the 16th century. Their town of Ars-en-RĂ© was a commune on the Ăle de RĂ© in the Charente-Maritime. Whitewashed buildings there would often accent their buildings with grayish blues and whatever flowers they could grow. + Campbell Durand lived with his mother, Camila, and father, Hal, in a quaint guesthouse belonging to a fish and lobster farmer. + Boats went in and out of the harbor all day via a long channel between the marshes, and that was where you could find Hal from dusk to dawn. + A distinct feature of the town was its strange black and white church steeple. It had been a useful mariner's way-finder for centuries. Camila Durand would often go out to the steeple. She enjoyed the quiet walk over, the feel of the waterâs breeze against her skin, and proudly overlooked her boys at work. Campbell would wave violently toward her, smile brightening his face, stomach rumbling for dinner, as she silently guided them home. + If Campbell was not in school, he was in and out of the harbor with his father. He would do at least one run in the morning before school and two after. On days with higher run expectancies or days when men would not show up due to poor weather conditions, Campbell would miss school, much to his and his motherâs dismay, to work with his father. + âCamp,â he began to be called. It was easier to shout one syllable than two over the deafening sound of the waters and men working. + The boyâs scent was slightly fishy, mixed with saltwater and sweat. Regardless of whether or not his peersâ families were in the same industries or higher middle class, this was unique to him and often kept him from experiencing close friendships. Â + Once a year at most, Camila Durand went into the city. The tripâs purpose was to collect necessities, and despite her desire to take her son, Hal insisted Camp remain in Ars-en-RĂ©. + When Camila was pregnant with their second child, Camp was finally allowed to accompany his mother to the city to carry things for her. He stopped at a street vendor whose wooden display was covered with beautiful flowers and bottles filled with perfumes and oils. When the smell of eucalyptus grabbed his attention, Camila smiled; eucalyptus grew plentifully in Southern France and was the base note of her everyday perfume, a luxury item she was able to pick out for her wedding. She bought the eucalyptus oil for her son, a secret to be kept from Hal. Camp would use it when he got to school and hoped it wore off by the time he left. + Campâs hair was a hectic mess of curls. His mother liked to wrap them around her index finger mindlessly, creating a sensitivity and exclusivity around the act. While he had an affinity for it and could often be found with a hand in his hair, he would never let anyone but his mother touch it, remaining true even into young adulthood. + Eventually, Campâs curls grew long and people would tell his parents that he was such a âpretty girl.â Â Camila tucked his long curls behind his ears like she did her own for as long as she could, but eventually, his fatherâs ego got the best of him. It was like Campbellâs masculinity was meant to be a reflection of his own. If Campbell was not masculine enough, Hal felt it meant he wasnât masculine enough. + This led to the desire, manipulation, and force-of-hand Hal had in having another son. + Getting pregnant again was a long, hard road for Camila. Her first miscarriage was found out by Campbell climbing into her bed to find a mess of blood. Hal reprimanded Camp for screaming, even though it was the sounding alarm that saved her life at the time. Hal rushed out the door with Camila in his arms, slamming the door shut behind them. Things were never explained to Campbell, leaving him confused. When his mother arrived home safely, he quickly held to the relief and asked no questions. It wasnât until she began to show, two pregnancies and one miscarriage later, that he found out his parents were still trying. + When it was time for the baby to come, delivery was even more difficult than the act of getting pregnant. The complications took her life. + After his mother had passed, there was nothing tying Campbell and Hal together. He fell into a quiet, depressive state and spent his entire earnings at the harbor on a laptop like the ones all of the kids at school had. + Camp barely tried at school, though he succeeded with flying colors. + When he got home, he would remain tucked away in his room, playing video games, coding, learning and unlearning algorithms, and the like. He often would stay up all night, sleep becoming less and less of a priority as his eyes remained glued to the blue light of his screen. + His father began drinking when he got home. The two sat at the dinner table together. They didnât talk. If anything was to be said, it was Hal, telling Camp that he would waste his life away on that computer and never make anything of himself. + Camp began hacking. It started out as a result of having beaten all of his video games and having no money to buy more. It became his own sort of game. It started small, the computers of classmates, then teachers, then strangers, then businesses, then local government, then banks, and eventually, secret intelligence branches. + The boy had no ambitions, no goals, no ulterior motive, no end game. He was told that there would be very serious consequences for his actions, but the agency was in America, a country in which he was not legally adult, and he felt untouchable. His 18th birthday wasnât far so they did with him what they would have done with any juvenile delinquent in his position and offered him a âbright futureâ that started with Gallagher Academy. The Fall semester would begin in September of 2019, and along with it, would begin Campâs new life. + He packed his bags, gave his father a reluctant hug, ignoring his proud ramblings of how he would make something of himself after all and that his mother would be so proud, and was on his way. He would wake up and go to sleep missing the quiet safety of the home his mother had once occupied. He would miss the certainty of his fatherâs mundane routines and joining him for quiet dinners of cabbage and meat stew when he got home.
HIS PERSONALITY.
(insightful, patient, weird, rebelling, lone wolf, great listener, always running late, 1000 moods, needs space)
+ Kaiju films are theyâre favorite (Kaiju is a Japenese genre of films featuring giant monsters that are usually attacking major cities) + Also loves Ghostbusters + Always has a movie they want you to watch + Barely sleeps, leaving dark circles permanently under their eyes + Computer is so old it glitches. + Dreams of a car with a neon under-glow, though they donât know where theyâd drive it + Included a major of driverâs ed because they have never driven a car, nor has their family ever owned one, and driving fast sounds cool + Ends up using it as a coping mechanism. some people punch things when theyâre mad, others cry, he drives. fast. dangerously. recklessly. but itâs okay because technically theyâre studying + Drinks absinthe as a way of remaining close to their father, who they think theyâre destined to be regardless of what fancy school invited them to the states and thinks theyâre âtalentedâ and âgeniusâ + Listens to Marianaâs Trench in the background of whatever theyâre doing + Has tattoo ideas, but no tattoos: UFO, bermuda triangle, third eye, a mask, illuminati symbol + Talks to you for hours about conspiracy theories + Writes poetry + Likes feeling the breeze with their eyes closed (it reminds them of their mother doing the same at the church steeple, looking over them at the harbor) + Keeps a notebook separate from their poetry, meant for deep thoughts, connecting thoughts and ideas, and inspiration + Photoshopped your head on a meme and sent it to you at 3am + Gets heartbroken 30 times a week by falling for people they look at + Has trust issues + Often unmotivated and disinterested + Feels like they have to adapt to every person they meet to be liked, so theyâre often silent at first, figuring out how to mold themselves into the kind of person they need to be around you + Labeled themselves as nonbinary as soon as they were no longer under the strict rule of masculinity presented by their father + Wants to use they/them pronouns, but is too scared to ask. Feels like itâs a âburdenâ to ask people to go through the trouble of being thoughtful. They donât want people thinking about them at all + Figuring things out takes them a little longer + Only comes out of their shell around people that are gentle and easy-going + They are tolerant and composed to balance their intense energy when it gets to be too much and needs people to do the same + Can not flirt if their life depended on it + Can be social but born a lone wolf + Only clingy when having the time of  their lives with you, trust you with their heart and soul, or realize they can help you drastically with something and wish to focus on their effort to help you + Need people to sense and feel where the lines between âseemingâ and âbeingâ blur and that can figure out who the person is behind the anonymous mask + Thereâs always some kind of mask to see through + Cognitive AF + Come across emotionless because it is hard to allow themselves to be seen as vulnerable by other people + They hide from their own self + Highly selective and self-aware + They find it hard to ask for help + Itâs not all fun and laughs + They adore someone who will inspire confidence in them and the courage to be in the moment and embody their own complexities. Someone who takes them seriously enough but will also keep the conversation light and free-flowing. They will only crush their own walls if you literally allow them to go ahead and ask for the help they deserve + They want people who can allow them to escape and be an actual human anchor for their souls + They do not like to be forced when it comes to sharing what is important to them. They will only do that on their own time or not at all + They know the difference between who is a friend vs. who is a best friend vs. who is a mere acquaintance vs. who is a person they view romantically. These lines do not blur or cross + Once on that level, itâs like having a secret language of communication + Harsh with their words. They are not polite because their words happen outside of emotions + How they communicate with others often has nothing to do with how theyâre feeling on the inside + Come across as senseless and illogical and absolutely nuts + Likes to say âI told you soâ + Get in their head while youâre talking, so they sometimes have to pretend that they understood

the language of flowers
Rating: T Characters:Â Sammy, Susie, Susie-Alice/Malice, Henry Warnings: dead people, but nothing out of the pale for what was seen in-game Description: On a wall in the studio, a poem is scrawled. There are lots of poems scrawled on the walls, and they all have a story-- pieces of a fractured mind, coming together for brief moments in flashes of memories stolen from him, in flashes of other memories he shouldnât have to bear the burden of.
Heâll forget these things as soon as his poem is written, but for now...
Also on AO3!
I had a burst of poetic inspiration and decided I wanted to incorporate that poem into an actual one-shot, so enjoy this collection of memories. Yes, itâs part of an au, but that doesnât have any bearing on the content here.
SUNFLOWERS, DAISIES
"Delivery for you, Miss Campbell!â
âThanks, Wally, but I told you, Susieâs just fine,â she said with a smile, accepting the vase of flowers with a look that quickly turned curious. As Wally tipped his hat and left the room, she grabbed for the tag, face turning sour. âUgh...â
âMmm? Donât tell me thereâs a bug on it?â Sammy said, turning the rest of the way around in his chair to look. One hand went for the nearby fly swatter. He hoped it wasnât a bee.
âNo, no- itâs- just-â She sighed, setting the vase down. Sammyâs hand retreated from where it was groping for the fly swatter. âItâs probably a little rude of me, but I just- I did tell him I prefer sunflowers...â
âSunflowers?â Sammy looked from the roses, the sight of which made his chest clench, to Susie. âHim?â
âAn old flame. Few days ago he asked me out for coffee, talked about maybe getting back together.â She pursed her lips at the vase, folding her arms and looking down at it as if not quite sure what to make of it. âI broke up with him because- heâs nice enough, but he just doesnât listen! I was hoping maybe heâd worked on that but... I mean I did tell him every Valentineâs Day we were together that I liked sunflowers and daisies best and he still got me roses and heâs still doing that.â
Sammy rested his chin against his hand. âOh, heâs that kind of person who you talk to but nothing sticks.â
âExactly- well, maybe not exactly, because itâs not even like heâs forgetful? He remembers things just fine, usually. Itâs more like...â She gestured, seeking to pull the words she needed from the air. âWhen I broke up with him I asked him a number of questions about me. You know, my favorite flower, my favorite smell, how I like my coffee, favorite movie, favorite animal... little things like that? He only got a single one right!â
âSo itâs more like he just didnât care about you.â
âYeah, thatâs the impression I got.â She shook her head. âWell, if he thinks Iâm going to settle for just plain ânice,â he has another thing coming. Nice is a bare minimum requirement. You have to try harder than that!â
âAnd you deserve someone trying harder than that,â Sammy said quietly. When she turned to look at him, he blinked, face growing a bit warm. âAnyone does. I donât pretend to know much about this love thing, but Iâm pretty sure caring about one anotherâs favorite interests is just a given.â
âExactly.â She went to move the vase, then stopped with a sigh. âPoor things; they didnât ask to be sent by a no-try nice-guy. Iâll leave them until they wilt on their own. Itâd be a shame to just chuck them.â
âWhy not give them to Norman?â Sammy said suddenly, and Susie looked at him in confusion. âNormanâs husband loves roses,â he explained. âI heard him mention that once, around Valentineâs. Take off the tag and maybe charge him a bit of money if his pride demands it, and the roses go to someone who actually likes them, theyâll be out of your hands, and you wonât have to be the one trying to carefully transport them home. Or leaving them in my office. Easy.â
âGooooood idea.â She smiled, picking the vase up. âThanks, Sammy!â
âOf course,â he answered, turning back around in his desk as he returned to his music. Thump thump thump, went his heart.
âIt was nothing.â
BABYâS BREATH
Sammy shifted his grip on the precious package, hesitating outside the theater. One hand reached for the doorknob, gripped it tightly, then let go.
God damn it. Pull yourself together, Lawrence.
Deep breath in. Deep breath out. He grabbed the knob again and turned it, entering the room.
It was dark, as heâd left it, Susie sitting with a rigid back in a seat at the very front. Little sniffles filled the room and Sammy felt his stomach clench a little even though he knew they were joyful tears.
Calm down. He was about to make her cry more, anyway, so there was no point in letting himself get all flustered by the sounds of her stifled weeping. He cleared his throat and walked over, pivoting on his heel once he reached her to stand in front of her. She looked up at him with a wide, teary smile that turned into a look of confusion when she spied what lay in his arms.
He held it out to her.
âCongratulations.â He smirked. âTold you that youâd knock it out of the park.â
âOh- Sammy!â She accepted the bouquet from him with a watery laugh. âOh Sammy, you shouldnât have!â
âOf course I should have. You did amazingly. Incredibly.â He folded his hands behind his back, willing himself not to duck his head. âEveryoneâs going to love Alice, and youâre the one who brought her to life.â
âYou even got me my favorites,â she laughed, rubbing a fist into one eye as she glanced down again at the sunflowers and daises so carefully arranged in their paper wrapping.
âOf course. Presents shouldnât be half-assed! You said those were your favorites.â
âI did.â She smiled at him, the bubbly surprise melting into something softer, sweeter. â... You know, you really are sweeter than sugar underneath all that grouchiness.â
His face flushed hot and all thoughts whited out as she leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
His head filled with cotton, staring at her as she leaned back, able to count most of the teardrops on her long lashes, the lashes that framed those eyes, those eyes-!
She smiled at him again.
âNow letâs go find water for them.â
He nodded, dumbly, stumbling along with her in a daze as she took his hand and pulled him from the room.
So this is what itâs like to float on cloud nine, he thought. I hope I never come down.
HEAVENLY VOICE
The pipes sang, the wood creaked, the ink dripped. Try as he might, the wood protested hideously wherever he stepped. This was a particularly bad area, apparently.
Music.
He halted, tilting his head for a moment before looking up.
Humming floated around the room like dust motes in sunlight, interrupting the steady stream of tinkling song that he always heard calling to him in the Ink.
It called to him. Not the same way the Ink did, but it did. It called, tugged, and the empty hole in his heart responded. A deep, aching longing, a need, filled the core of his being right to the brim.
Suddenly his chest seized and he gasped, fingers clenching against the inky shell, beneath which was his heart.
No. No, this was not the only world heâd ever known. There was once something else, something else besides just a body that didnât hurt, didnât look wrong- there was once light and- and- joy! Safety! And-
Oh no, no no-! As soon as the images burst before his mind they were fading, and-
No, he had to do something to stop it! He had to! He couldnât forget again-!
The humming grew in pitch and his head ached, the ache suddenly spiking into sheer agony. The world went sideways for a moment as he pitched into a wall, staggering into it.
The agony lifted, leaving him breathing heavily, leaning into the wall.
Ah... what was he so upset about again? He blinked.
Humming.
That voice. Wasnât he thinking about that a moment ago? He struggled to recall. Yes, he was, wasnât he? What was he thinking about? He tugged absently on his hair, wincing as a small chunk of it gave easily under his hand. He let the inky hair fall to the ground. Something about the humming...
The creature- the angel! It was an angel, singing. Did the Ink tell him that? He wasnât sure, but the word âangelâ remained burned into his mind in lines of fire and longing.
He needed to go find her.
âForgive me, my Lord,â he said aloud in a whisper, casting an apologetic glance at the whispering, singing pipes that would surely lead him back to his god if he followed their song. It always did, after all, even if in a roundabout way. âBut I need to seek this out first...â
YOU BRING DEATH
The voice was closer now. He was closer!
Tired though he was, the sound put a pep in his step. That beautiful voice, that sound like rang like church bells...
He was so close now. Almost there.Â
The hallway ended in a door and he tugged it open, noting the pentagram on the wall directly next to where the door opened. The mark of his Lord, by which all things in the Well could return.
As grateful as he was for that gift, he hoped heâd never have to use it. But that shouldnât be a problem.
The humming stopped for a few moments and his heart dropped, only soothed when it began again. He closed his eyes, allowing himself a moment of indulgence, before shaking it off and stepping forward again, one hand adjusting the old rope that kept the banjo on his back secured.
He was going to find the angel, and... something was going to happen. His heart swelled. Something great was going to happen.
He hopped down the steps and across the room, and up the ones that led to a pair of metal doors that were open. A quick glance upwards made him pause and squint.
SHEâS QUITE A GAL!
Yes, she is.
As soon as he thought it, it was gone. A quiet noise left him, and he looked down and back to the doors, slipping through.
The hallway beyond wasnât very long and had a couple kinks in it, but at the end, a light from above illuminated a long-haired woman, her back to him, humming.
His heart was pounding now. And... his face ached?
Oh. Because he was smiling.
She moved about, working on something, clearly. He stepped forward. âH-hello! I was wondering if- if I could- maybe- play for you...?â
She turned around and, at the same time, he caught sight of what else was in the room
Corpses.
Piles... and piles... of...
The world came to a halt, discordant screeching in the back of his head, a broken halo bobbing as she stepped forward.
There were no more thoughts.
He ran.
SUNFLOWERS, DAISIES BABYâS BREATH HEAVENLY VOICE YOU BRING DEATH
Calloused fingers traced the letters, Henryâs face tugging down in a frown.
He was used to seeing less than uplifting stuff written on the walls. You really didnât get much more down than âWHOâS LAUGHING NOWâ on the wall of a room where the corpse of your dead child lay on display.
Runner ups included such lovely phrases like âI DONâT WANT TO WORK HERE ANYMOREâ along with a handprint that dragged down the wall and âTHE SHEEP WILL COME TO SLAUGHTERâ. Another honorable mention to âDOWN HERE, WEâRE ALL SINNERS.â
Oh, and âI STILL REMEMBER MY NAME.â Two smeared handprints. God. Just remembering that made him sick all over again. He found that in one of the Lost Onesâ safehouse and threw up, again.
He was getting used to repeatedly feeling sick.
But what he wasnât used to were poems. Heâd seen a few, scattered around--and heâd never forget the first one, located in Sammyâs sanctuary.
And, speaking of which, he had a good idea who wrote this one. Sammy did so love his poems. âA song is poetry with music,â he once said, and Henry never forgot that. Anytime he saw a poem, he remembered.
As he was remembering now.
Sammy wrote this. He was almost certain. But what was in his head when he wrote it?
Well... heâd say that only a god would know that, but Henry had long been sure there probably wasnât one.
He reached for a nearby bucket of ink and a brush, and began to draw. After a few minutes he stopped, put the things down, and stared at it for a few minutes as if standing at a grave before walking away.
A drawing of single flower now lay beneath the poem.

Bakery Market to Reach Over USD672 Billion by 2026 | TechSci Research
Rising disposable income, improving lifestyles, and eating habits of people are expected to drive the global bakery market during the forecast period.
According to TechSci Research report, âGlobal Bakery Market By Type (Bread & Rolls, Cookies, Cakes & Pastries, Doughnuts & Muffins, Pies & Tarts and Others (Bagel, Cupcake, Croissant, Macaron, etc.)), By Distribution Channel (Artisanal Bakeries/Specialty Stores, Supermarkets/Hypermarkets, Departmental Stores, Online, and Others (Convenience Stores, Forecourt Retailers, etc.)), By Region, Competition, Forecast & Opportunities, 2026â, the global bakery market is expected to grow at a CAGR of over 7% during the forecast period on account of the growing economies and rising population. Additionally, changing consumption habits have paved the way for changes in the sector.
Moreover, factors such as metropolitan life, speedy and on-the-spot consumption, as well as demand for fresh food has further fueled the growth of the bakery market. Consumer demand for healthier and more nutritious breads, rolls, and cookies, as well as those that give increasingly unique and enjoyable eating experiences such as flatbreads, specialized buns, and rolls, are driving the market. Manufacturers of bakery products are adopting innovative and distributive strategies to increase the market share of their companies. Such initiatives help them to increase the revenue and consumer base to be ahead of the other players in the market.

The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the global bakery market. The market was impacted, due to the transportation restrictions and temporary worker shortage. However, the online channels benefited as people were preferring short-term stocking, and e-commerce spiked as people shifted more towards online delivery platforms, as it was the only safe and available option for the consumers.
The global bakery market is segmented into type, distribution channel, region, and company. Based on type, the global bakery market can be split into bread & rolls, cookies, cakes & pastries, doughnuts & muffins, pies & tarts, and others. Among these, the bread & rolls segment has accounted for the largest market share in 2020. This is due to the popularity of bread prepared with oats, whole wheat, and fatty nuts. Bread that has been wrapped and sliced is also preferred by consumers. Bread can be served in a variety of ways at any meal of the day, as a snack, or as a component in other dishes., which further makes it more popular among consumers.
In terms of regional analysis, the global bakery market is segmented into North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, South America, and Middle East & Africa. Out of which, Europe has accounted for the majority of market share in the global bakery market in 2020 and the region is anticipated to maintain its dominance over the next five years as well. The reason being, growing health awareness among the young and millennial population, the convenience of purchasing ready-to-eat bakery products and expanding fast-food chains. With much of Europe embracing a gluten-free diet, the egg-free bakery is becoming a big primary phenomenon. Germany is one of the key markets for the bakery in the European region.

The companies like Grupo Bimbo, MondelÄz International, Inc., Yamazaki Baking Co. Ltd., Flowers Foods, Inc., Kellogg Company, Campbell Soup Company, Associated British Foods Plc, Britannia Industries Limited, Finsbury Food Group Plc, and NestlĂ© are some of the leading players operating in the global bakery market. Major bakery companies are expanding their manufacturing bases to meet the rising demand across developing countries. In addition, firms have embraced development through transnational mergers and acquisitions, which have shown to be effective in strengthening their footprint. Recently, Grupo Bimbo acquired the Modern Foods brand.
âConsumers' desire to consume healthy bakery products with special characteristics such as lower fat, cholesterol, sodium chloride, and nitrite content, enhanced fatty acid profile composition, and added health-enhancing ingredients is a rapidly growing trend across the world. These demands have the potential to open a lot of doors for the bakery industry. Moreover, the continuous new product launches by regional and international players are one of the major factors for the future growth of the market. Factors like technological up-gradation and growing demand for ready-to-eat bakery products are further anticipated to positively influence the growth of the market through 2026,â said Mr. Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research-based global management consulting firm.
âGlobal Bakery Market By Type (Bread & Rolls, Cookies, Cakes & Pastries, Doughnuts & Muffins, Pies & Tarts and Others (Bagel, Cupcake, Croissant, Macaron, etc.)), By Distribution Channel (Artisanal Bakeries/Specialty Stores, Supermarkets/Hypermarkets, Departmental Stores, Online, and Others (Convenience Stores, Forecourt Retailers, etc.)), By Region, Competition, Forecast & Opportunities, 2026â has evaluated the future growth potential of the global bakery market and provides statistics and information on market size, structure and future market growth. Service Descriptions - 2021
GRANULAR GARDEN FERTILIZING, 10kg bags. A small or medium-sized property will usually only need 3kg or less. The granular product prices listed below are for product only. These fertilizers are usually applied when gardening at an hourly rate, so the âlaborâ portion of the fertilizer application is part of the gardening service hours. For those wanting just an application of granular garden fertilizer and no other services, there would be a minimum charge for the application time.
FLOWERING-SHRUB/ANNUAL/PERENNIAL/VEGETABLE Fertilizer (8-12-14), 10 kg, $35
TREE/SHRUB/HEDGE Fertilizer (18-4-8)(for non-flowering shrubs), 10kg, $35
..........
GRANULAR GARDEN FERTILIZING, 2kg box
Rose food, 6-12-16, 2kg. box, $13 Rhodo/Azalea fertilizer 10-8-6, 2kg, $13 Lawn Starter fertilizer 15-30-10, 2kg, $13
..........
DELIVERY CHARGES: $25 per load (compost, bark mulch, garden soil, etc.)
-in August, when material is needed for a job requiring at least an hour of labor, delivery is free.
..........
MULCHING AND SOIL AMENDMENT (product/delivery plus hourly labor)
Coastal Fir mulch, scoop, $35 Nature's Gold mulch, scoop, $35 Medium bark mulch, scoop, $30
Peat soil, scoop, $30 Premium Topsoil, scoop, $40
..........
CITY OF PENTICTON COMPOST: $30 per cubic yard plus delivery
-can be used in gardens to condition/amend soil (dug in) or as a bark mulch
-can be used as lawn topdressing as there is no finer-textured compost in Penticton (it is a bit chunky so it is recommended that you take a look at it at Campbell Mtn. Landfill before ordering). Can be labor intensive as it requires spreading and then raking off some of the bigger pieces.
-incorporates material from biosolid recycling (tested for levels of salts and heavy metals but some people prefer to use only for ornamentals and not for fruits/vegetables)
-Sandstone Landscaping Supplies sells an alternative that they call Skaha Garden Blend (peat moss/topsoil/compost) which is good for gardens but not topdressing lawns
..........
AERATING
-quoted price including machine rental (costs about twice as much as a lawn cutting)
-lawns may need to be mowed before aerating (separate charge)
-recommended yearly as a corrective/preventative measure (can be done in spring or fall)
-if you've not aerated in previous years, I recommend testing the compaction by plunging a screwdriver into the soil (the screwdriver should be about as thick as a pencil)
-aerating in September is 10% less than spring aerating.
..........
POWER-RAKING (DETHATCHING)
-quoted price including machine rental (as long as multiple jobs can be schedule on the same day).
-costs about 2.5 to 3 times what a lawn cut would cost.
-lawns may need to be mowed before power-raking (separate charge).
-thatch is âa tightly intermingled layer of dead and living stems and roots that develop between the growing turf and the soil surfaceâ
-should only be done when there is excess thatch (not necessary as a preventative measure) and only in the spring
-you can test for excess thatch by hand, separating the thatch layer to see how thick and tough it is.
-up to a half-inch of thatch is acceptable and does not require power-raking
..........
LAWN OVERSEEDING: hourly rate plus cost of seed (up to 14.99 per 1kg bag)
May and June are good months to do overseeding of lawns as the seeds germinate much better when it starts to get warm. July and August are too hot for good germination rates.
..........
CORN GLUTEN MEAL (organic) : Â hourly rate plus cost of product (prices vary due to which supplier stocks this item). Â
This product can be used to address crabgrass issues, however it will only reduce the amount of crabgrass. Corn-gluten meal should be considered a supplementary treatment, for instance to reduce the amount of hand-pulling if the amount of crabgrass has not gotten so wide-spread as to make hand pulling impractical. So if you use corn-gluten meal without also hand-pulling (which I donât recommend) and you get only as much crabgrass as the previous year then it was a success because crabgrass can expand aggressively from year to year. It should be applied when the Forsythia is blooming (late March or early April) to address issues with crabgrass. If youâve had crabgrass issues in the past but it was not much of an issue last year (and it was addressed by hand pulling or what-have-you) then treatment with a product is probably not necessary. In that case, monitoring for recurrence should be sufficient. Â
..........
***Prices subject to change due to supplierâs possible price changes.***

Camp Camp All Grown Up
Just how I think the Camp Campbell characters will be in 10-15 years. I just set their ages around like 22-25. Counselors are in their mid thirties.Â
Max - Max went to Sleepy Peak community college to get his general education. During the summer he works at Camp Campbell (not his decision) and does some handy work around the camp. Max has a passion for guitar, woodworking, and secretly knitting, which comes in handy during the chilly season at Sleepy Peak. Max decided he wanted to become a teacher after realizing he can make a difference in kids life like David did with him. Not like heâd ever admit it though.
Nikki- Nikki worked year round at Camp Campbell and helped preserve the natural beauty of Sleepy Peak. After battling with Cameron Campbell, who wanted to make the camp into a four star resort, Nikki now owns the land and has turned into National Forest. She also takes kids at the local schools on adventure field trips. She is very popular around the town and does not plan to leave anytime soon.
Neil - Neil obviously did not stay anywhere near Camp Campbell, but he does visit his friends whenever he is free. Neil graduated from Northeastern College with a degree in computers and mechanical engineering. Neil started his own business by creating hyper-real simulations for the gaming industry, but ultimately started working with Space Kid (now Space Man) for NASA.
David- Nothing in the entire world would ever tear David away from Camp Campbell. David now works with Nikki to make sure the Camp is top notch, and to preserve the Sleepy Peak platypus. David also spends his time taking care of his kids, who of course love Camp Campbell as much as he does (not really they just want him to stop singing).
Gwen - Miraculously, Gwenâs degree did come in handy! She went back to school and became a psychiatrist. Gwen stays around Camp Camp just in case one of the kids get traumatized by Max or Nikki, or if some of the kids need a little something to make them chill out.
Space Kid- Space Kid/Man, or as he claims âNeil Armstrong IIâ, actually achieved his dream of entering space! Kind of. He works at NASA as a janitor at first, but now they use him to test space-like conditions. He did achieve to leave the atmosphere and go onto a burning satellite, but thatâs because no one else wanted to do it. Space Kid also relies on Neil as being his best friend/brother figure. He also has matching coffee mugs for them that say Neil #1 and Neil #2.
Nerf - Nerf did not attend college after graduating, but instead tried to make a living doing blue collar jobs. He was a cook, construction worker, and delivery man. After a quick stint in jail for assault, he cleaned up his act and became a mechanic and owns a successful shop. Also after exploring his sexuality for many years, Nerf settled with his longtime partner Chris. They have two kids together and they seem to be very happy together. Â
Nerris - Nerris has not changed a bit since she left Camp Campbell. She still plays magic games and even cosplays for a living. Nerris is very famous in the cosplay community and is a headliner at many convention across the world. She even created a tournaments for young girls that like to compete in magic games. Also after a long love/hate relationship, she began dating Harrison, but nothing is set in stone with them yet.
Harrison - Alongside Nerris being a famous cosplayer, Harrison became a great illusionist. Harrison upgraded his amatuer magic tricks to spectacular illusions and events that capture many fans. Harrison has made buildings disappear, escape a death maze, and even faked his death a couple times. Harrison has also thought of proposing to Nerris, but he lost the ring in an illusion he was practicing. Oh well.
Ered- Ered sadly did not make it that far in her extreme sport career. She won a few titles in local competitions, but did not qualify for any of the national events. Ered didnât mind though, as she found a love for cars and worked with Nerf. Ered goes racing a couple times a week and hopes to get good enough to compete. Ered also has an on again off again relationship with Erin, the Flower Scouts, but keeps her options open.
Preston - Preston has appeared in all the productions he could get his thespian hands on. Whether it is Romeo and Juliet, or something student written, Preston will produce or act in anything just to get his name out there. After years of trying, Preston is now part of a traveling thespian group that performs improv and miniature plays. He is truly content with his life as he is surrounded by people that share his passion.
Dolph- Dolph was a struggling artist, even at time felt like he being scrutinized by a regime of oppression (okay no holocaust jokes). Dolph actually made it into art school and has been featured in many galleries with his symbolic masterpieces. Dolph will sometimes drop in and visit his friends, almost with no warning, and check out how their lives are doing. Mainly Dolph stays to himself, but is content with his fulfilling life of art, and juice. He loves juice.

The First Annual Diamond Platters: Swim Into The Soundâs Ancillary End of the Year Awards
Whether you like it or not, itâs awards season. The time of the year when every music publication sits down to rank, order, and pass judgment on the last 365 days of art. As every outlet races to beat each other to those illustrious âend of the year list clicks,â I am only one man, and I just canât compete. While Swim Into The Sound does still have an official âBest Albums of 2017â list in the works, this countdown is going to be a little different.
For the first time ever, Iâd like to welcome you to Swim Into The Soundâs Diamond Platter Awards: an extravagant, ornate, and handsome way to recognize the past year of music. Grandiose, gaudy, and opulent, The Diamond Platters are the most exorbitant awards on the entirety of the internet, and the absolute highest honor of online music blogging awards.
Aside from poking fun at the seriousness of list season, these awards do have a purpose: to talk about music that may not be discussed otherwise. Itâs always fun to see how everyone ranks albums each year (even if they start rolling in around November) but more often than not, most websiteâs âbest of the yearâ list ends up coming off as rote rambling. A half-hearted and inconsistent ranking that merely regurgitates a months-old review with a few outlandish placements to get people talking. Itâs the music blog equivalent of roll call, and itâs getting stale.
So with that said, The Diamond Platters donât go to the âbestâ music of the year, but things that are worth celebrating for some other reason. Albums that triumphed in their category, artists that surprised their audience, or moments that were worth remembering. Hopefully funnier, punchier, and a little more out of the box than your average end of the year listicle, hereâs my off-the-cuff (but official) ranking of several hyper-specific categories of my own creation. Enjoy.
Best Acoustic Reimagining
Winner: The Wonder Years - Burst & Decay
After a two year absence and an album that I wasnât too hot on, the pop-punk gods return with an acoustic EP that reworks some of their best songs into a tender acoustic offering. Taking cues from lead singer Daniel Campbellâs solo outing, Burst & Decay marks the beginning of a new day for the band. The artistic fulfillment of the direction that theyâve been heading in for years now, all packaged up in a lush EP that allows the songwriting to shine as the crown jewel that it always has been. Itâs a fantastic âfall album,â and the perfect soundtrack to warm lattes, wool scarves, and crunchy leaves. The albumâs final track will leave you ruminating, thoughtful, and pensive, but thatâs precisely what the band was going for and always has been.
Runner-up: Jeff Tweedy - Together At Last
The Wilco frontman treats long-time fans to a career-spanning album that culls the best songs from 30-years of music and reworks them beautifully.
Biggest Surprise of the Year
Winner: The Dirty Projectors - The Dirty Projectors
As is a recurring theme with this blog, The Dirty Projectors were a group that Iâd never heard of until very recently. When the bandâs futuristic self-titled LP dropped at the beginning of the year, I had no context. No knowledge of the bandâs dissolution, bad blood, or previous relationships. I went into the record blind, only having the internetâs reaction to go on. Hailing the album as â3017 shitâ I hit play on the album not knowing what to expect and emerged blown away. It indeed sounded like future music with crazy autotune, glitchy instrumentals, and bizarre vocal deliveries as far as the eye could see. As I learned more about the group and the backstory I grew to dislike the man behind the music, but that didnât keep me from loving the unconventional left-field arrangements on this record any less. The Dirty Projectors is unlike anything else Iâve heard in this year or any other.
Runner-up: Ugly God - The Booty Tape
When XXL unveiled their class of 2017 freshmen, I was underwhelmed to say the least. Aside from elevating genuinely deplorable human beings, I hadnât heard of most of the artists that made the list. Of the ten up-and-coming rappers that the magazine showcased, I came out liking Ugly God the most. His late-summer debut The Booty Tape is a 23-minute banger-filled escapade that combines a conceptual sense of humor with modern trap stylings. Itâs what Das Racist would have made if they were around to witness the rise of Lil Yachty. Nothing on the tape overstays its welcome, the production in on-point, and Ugly God is surprisingly proficient throughout. Itâs a joy to listen to, and thatâs not something I thought Iâd ever say about a dude who âonly wants to sing about dumb stuff.â
Most Stank Face-Worthy Beat
Winner: Flume âEnough (feat. Pusha T)â
After last yearâs immaculately-produced Skin LP, the Australian musician continued his flower imagery in 2017 with two companion EPs alongside various singles and numerous remixes. The high point of this era came at the very beginning of Skinâs second companion EP on the Pusha T-assisted âEnough.â Featuring abrasive blown-out instrumentation, âEnoughâ is a jaw-clenching and muscle-inflating track that will flood your speakers and blow out your eardrums. Perhaps the ultimate gym song, âEnoughâ is one of the nastiest beats Iâve ever heard in my life, and Pusha T is used masterfully. This track is a force to be reckoned with.
Runner-up: Kendrick Lamar âDNA.â
After two minutes of scene setting on the album-opening âBLOOD.,â an ignorant Fox News clip gives way to an aggressive Kendrick who begins âDNA.â by shouting âI got, I got, I got, I got / Loyalty, got royalty inside my DNA.â The song sees Lamar coming out of the gates swinging, but midway through the song, just as you think itâs winding down, the beat cuts out and switches. With only one minute of the track left, a countdown begins, and Kendrick starts spazzing out over an allegedly-improvised beat, created after the fact to cater to his flow. Placed over a sample of 1982 Rick James, the beat becomes swells to monstrous proportions, spiraling and booming, taking control of every muscle in your body and eclipsing every pure thought youâve ever had. Itâs one of the best moments in music this year and an absolute marvel to behold.
Best Album From Last Year That Took Until 2017 To Discover
Winner: Pinegrove - Cardinal
Listening to everything in one year is impossible. Sometimes albums and bands slip through the cracks, and in 2016 Pinegrove was one of those for me. The Run For Cover signees have seen an astronomical rise in 2017, becoming indie darlings within the space of a single calendar year. It took me many listens to discover whatâs so unique about Pinegrove, but after I realized they werenât just another Emo band, I began to fall in love with them in early 2017. With fantastically-composed songs like âAphasiaâ and âNew Friendsâ the groupâs sophomore album is a fantastic jumping off point for a band thatâs poised to continue to grow exponentially.
Runner-up: Camp Cope - Camp Cope
Much like Pinegrove, this Melbourne-based female trio also released one of the best emo records of last year. While it took a while to sink its hooks into me, this fall I hit a point where I couldnât go one day without listening to Camp Copeâs self-titled record. If their second albumâs single is anything to go off of, the group may already have one of 2018âs best albums on their hands.
Most Satiating B-Sides Collection
Winner: Angel Olsen - Phases
B-side releases are an interesting beast. Often created primarily to satiate the die-hard fans, itâs rare that an artistâs best work would be on a collection of things cut from a record, but here we are. While Angel Olsenâs My Woman was an easy choice for my Best Of list last year, 2017âs Phases represents a thoughtful punctuation to the end of this chapter. Featuring unreleased cuts from each of her albums, Phases is a perfect sample platter of Olsenâs broad and diverse sounds proving, once again, that sheâs one of the most powerful women in indie.
Runner-up: Sufjan Stevens - The Greatest Gift
While Phases gets points for being comprised entirely of unheard material, Sufjanâs Greatest Gift should be commended for striking a near-perfect balance of B-sides, demos, and remixes. The âmixtapeâ collects outtakes from 2015âs landmark Carrie & Lowell, all of which bear the same brand of soul-destroying, death-ridden meditations and grievances. While Sufjanâs other 2017 album Carrie & Lowell Live represents a maximalist reimagining of the album, Greatest Gift represents the exact inverse: stark, subtle, and haunting renditions of the same tracks. Occasionally even more hard-hitting and impactful than the full album, The Greatest Gift is an incredible contrast to his 2015 record and the perfectly-placed bow atop this career-defining work.
Most Essential âPortland Anthemâ
Winner: Drake âPortlandâ
As a native Oregonian, this yearâs music has been a noticeable boon to our city. From local boys done good to songs specifically about our town, the Rose City has been blessed throughout 2017. God knows as Seattleâs Napoleon-complexed younger brother, weâll take all the confidence we can get. 2017 may have been the year of flutes, but Drakeâs âPortlandâ takes that woodwind-based phenomenon one step further into absurdity by heavily-utilizing the recorder. Assisted by Travis Scott and Quavo, âPortlandâ is an outlandish and bouncy anthem to life in PDX. While the album cut is fun, seeing the two perform the song live in May was a meta and goosebump-inducing highlight of my year in live music.
Runner-up: Sufjan Stevens âThe Hidden River of My Lifeâ
While almost all of Carrie & Lowellâs tracks depict life in Oregon, âThe Hidden River of My Lifeâ is a heartfelt (and surprisingly-catchy) song of in-jokes, references, and observations that can only come from having lived life our rainy state.
Reddit Commenter Who Should Be Reviewing Music
Winner: wonderbitch26 on Melodrama
When Lordeâs Melodrama dropped in June popheads across the world rejoiced. As often happens, that joy frequently translates into gay men acting so unbelievably extra that it begins to feel like an infinitely-renewable source of energy that we should be harnessing. In Melodramaâs album release thread on the /r/popheads subreddit, user wonderbitch26 posted an in-depth comment depicting an explicit and erotic tale of sexual dancing and BDSM-esque spanking that also managed to accurately portray what listening to the album is like. Itâs a journey worth taking.
Runner-up: plzaskmeaboutloom on More Life
Drake isnât exactly the internetâs favorite artist. While 2015âs If Youâre Reading This represented a career-defining high note, his subsequent releases have been middling at best. In fact, in May I wrote 8,000 words over a series of four posts in which I simply tried to reconcile my love for Drake despite his recent downward trajectory. While I perceived 2017âs More Life as a slight bounce back, not everyone agreed with me, least of all /r/indieheads user plzaskmeaboutloom whose Simon Cowell-esque takedown of the album is meaner (and funnier) than anything I could have ever come up with.
Most Gallery-Ready Cover Art
Winner: Spoon - Hot Thoughts
Itâs not often that a bandâs ninth record is their best. While Spoonâs Hot Thoughts finds the group reaching a refreshing creative peak, one of the most memorable aspects of the album is actually its gorgeous cover. Created by Portlandâs own Christine Messersmith, Hot Thoughtsâ album art is a striking depiction of a human skull. Painted in vivid watercolor, you can spot the pattern of the canvas running subtly throughout the background providing the perfect texture and consistency to the entire piece.
Runner-up: Turnover - Good Nature
To be quite honest, I was disappointed with Turnoverâs Peripheral Vision follow-up this year. While their 2015 album represented a jaw-dropping emo reinvention, 2017âs Good Nature seems to be content with simply extending those ideas into another release. While Iâm not yet sold on the albumâs musical contents, one thing is for sure: Good Natureâs cover is absolutely stunning. Featuring a child-like array of jungle animals underneath a bright pink sky, itâs a memorable and eye-catching display that also manages to be an excellent encapsulation of the music that lies behind it.
You Are America
Winner: Cardi B
Out of all the glo ups of 2017, none have been more astronomical than Cardi B. While her monumental hit âBodak Yellowâ tells her story quite well, she has gone from stripper to dethroning Taylor Swift and marrying a Migo all within the space of a year. When sheâs not breaking records, her time goes towards being one of the most magnanimous and personable Instagram purveyors on the planet. From iconic raps to inspirational social media videos, Cardi B is a force of nature. In one year she gave us a chart-shattering anthem of empowerment, togetherness, and upward mobility. Sheâs the embodiment of the American Dream. An endearing story of success. The bitch everyone wants to be. Her story is what this country was founded on.
Runner-up: Perfume Genius
This year has been hard for most of us, but for Mike Hadreas things have been near impossible. His 2017 record No Shape is the tale of seeking out happiness and holding onto it for dear life. About finding joy and warmth in the face of homophobia, discrimination, hatred, and a world that seems stacked against you. As a society, America should consider ourselves lucky to have humans like Hadreas amongst us. If even a fraction of our future population is comprised of people like him, then weâll be living in a utopia one day.
Most Impeccable Samples
Winner: Lil Aaron - Soundcloud Singles
While I gushed about Lil Aaronâs music in a post earlier this year, his combination of trap lyrics over 2000âs-era emo samples remains one of the most intoxicating things Iâve heard all year. From âMy Own Worst Enemyâ to âI Write Sins Not Tragedies,â Aaronâs Soundcloud is a treasure trove of millennial nostalgia. Each song follows a familiar pattern, first luring the listener in with a sense of familiarity, then flipping expectations end over end as he hits you with clever wordplay, catchy melodies, and gut-busting bars. Itâs a combination that I never would have thought of in a million years, much less imagined working as well as it does here, but that just goes to show the brilliance of Lil Aaronâs mind.
Runner-up: Jay Z - 4:44
Helmed entirely by No I.D., Jay-Zâs 4:44 represents a return to his earlier sound, once again embracing booming, chopped up soul samples. Itâs a match made in heaven, and the samples pair with his voice so well that you begin to wonder why he ever got away from them in the first place. Thanks to this sense of familiarity, the entire album feels both comfortably familiar and brand new at the same time. 4:44 manages to capitalize on Jayâs past success while also standing on its own merits, and thatâs all thanks to the recordâs strong sample-based foundation.
Worryingly Prolific Output
Winner: Brockhampton
When I say âprolific output,â the distinction here is output that also maintains a high quality. So sorry King Gizz fans, 5 albums in one year is in an achievement, but we both know theyâre not all winners. Texas-born, Cali-based BROCKHAMPTON is a group of 20-something 20-somethings who label themselves as a boyband. This year alone theyâve released three albums, one documentary, a TV Show, and embarked on a nationwide tour. They are young creatives incarnate, and I hope they never stop.
Runner-up: Sufjan Stevens
While not everything he released is from 2017, Sufjan Stevens has given fans more than enough new music this year to tide us over until his next record. From live reimaginings, b-sides, soundtracks, and space-themed originals, Sufjan has given us 3.5 albums of new material this year alone, and all of itâs great. And in the time that it took me to write and edit this he tossed out a Tonya Harding-themed loosie. The hits keep coming, and Sufjan is a true blessing.
Most Iconic Social Feed
Winner: Lordeâs Instagram
One of the few people I have notifications turned on for, Lordeâs Instagram has proven to be a never-ending waterfall of iconic tour pics, beautiful faces, and incredible fashion. In fact, my âsavedâ section might as well be renamed âJust Lordeâ at this point because thatâs 95% of all I ever save. She can do no wrong.
Runner-up: There is no runner-up
Best Incongruous Use of Hard Rock
Winner: Feist âA Man Is Not His Songâ
I canât believe Iâd so severely misjudged Feist as a pop act. Like most of the world, I was first introduced to her in 2007 with the unparalleled (and unexpected) success of â1234,â and until this year Iâd assumed that one breakout single was indicative of the Canadian songstressâ discography, but in reality, I could not have been more wrong. Feistâs Pleasure is an album that rides waves of aggression. Often focusing only on a guitar and Leslie Feistâs voice, itâs one of the rawest and most personal albums Iâve heard all year. A shock comes at the end of âA Man is Not His Songâ where the chorus bleeds into a quick 22-second hit of Mastodonâs âHigh Road.â It sticks out like a sore thumb, yet somehow fits into the song and album so perfectly. This was only one of many revelations that I had while listening to the album, and a moment that truly needs to be heard to be believed.
Runner-up: Brand New âNo Controlâ
While the whole of Brand Newâs Science Fiction is pretty hard-rockin', the Emo trailblazers tend to shift between two styles on the record: sad, slow tracks and aggressive kickass rock. Late-album cut âNo Controlâ lies somewhat between the two, featuring a whiny crooning chorus alongside distorted guitars. Around two and a half minutes in, the song fades out and slowly sputters out into quietness. Thereâs a brief pause of silence, and then a booming bass, fuzzed-out guitar, and aggressive set of drums are slowly turned up in the mix. Gradually gaining volume as they play, the instruments become louder and louder until the track ends in earnest. While it only hangs on for a minute before fading into the next song, the riff still remains a standout groovy moment on the bandâs career-defining final record.
Most Charming Human Being
Winner: Claire Cottrill of Clairo
Claire Cottrill has been making lo-fi bedroom pop songs for years now under the name Clairo, but it wasnât until this fall that her song âPretty Girlâ blew up. Having accumulated nearly 5 million views at the time of writing, the music video is simple, delightful, and impactful. Created on a day when âher hair was greasy, her skin was bad, and she didn't want to leave the bedâ the video sees Clairo alone in her room singing and dancing along to the simplistic pop track. Itâs utterly pleasant and completely disarming, a refreshing breath of air from the world around you. Still a student in college, I canât wait to see what kind of art Clairo is able to unleash once sheâs able to entirely devote herself to creative pursuits.
Runner-up: Alex Luciano of Diet Cig
The high-kicking, dog-loving, outspoken frontwoman to New York-based Diet Cig is a pom-pom-clad ball of energy and fury. With one of the most charismatic social feeds on the internet, Luciano is a treasure of a human being. Someone whoâs joy and passion bleeds over onto anyone and everyone that she comes in contact with. A badass of the pop-punk scene.
Best Music Video
Winner: Charli XCX âBoysâ
When Charli XCX dropped her video for âBoysâ over the summer, the pop culture world collectively went mad. From trying to spot all the celebrity cameos to drooling over everyone displayed in the song, it became an internet-wide obsession. The song itself is a catchy earworm of a pop track, but the video is a sugary pink and instantly-recognizable classic that managed to get the internet talking, which is a feat in and of itself.
Runner-up: Jay-Z - âThe Story of OJâ
On the polar opposite end of âBoys,â we have âThe Story of OJâ which is a dark black and white video about race relations in America. While all of Jay-Zâs 4:44 is packed with urgent addresses like the one found here, âThe Story of OJâ remains the best encapsulation of the albumâs wide-ranging topics accompanied by pitch-perfect emulation of Fleischer Studiosâ animation.
Best Collaboration
Winner: Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice
Maybe 2017 is bringing us together after all. From Atlanta trap stars to long-lost fables, and indie darlings, this year has been host to countless fantastic collaborations. Among dozens of great crossover albums, Lotta Sea Lice from Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile remains the one that sticks in my mind most prominently. Featuring breezy Sunday morning songs, this meeting of indie minds a genuinely pleasant listen that will take your mind off even the harshest realities of the dayâs news. Sea Lice offers an escape into a world untouched by misery where continental breakfasts are always available, and itâs easier than ever to let everything go.
Runner-up: 21 Savage, Offset, & Metro Boomin - Without Warning
Filed under âthings I didnât expect to be this great,â Without Warning is a joint effort between three of the biggest names in hip-hop this year. Hot off a string of successful albums, this collaborative release finds the two rappers trading verses over some of Metro Boominâs darkest beats of the year. Sprinkled with a handful of solo tracks and a couple of guest features, thereâs just enough variation here to make for an incredibly compelling listen.
Most Fabulous Christmas Bop
Winner: Sia âSantaâs Coming For Usâ
The chandelier-swinging popstress returned in 2017 bearing gifts in the form of Everyday Is Christmas, a collection of 10 original holiday songs. Kicking things off, the albumâs lead single âSantaâs Coming For Usâ is a jubilant and dancy track with just enough of a dark undercurrent to be enjoyed by all. If this song isnât a Christmas classic next year, I will be severely disappointed in us as a civilization.
Runner-up: Phoebe Bridgers âHave Yourself a Merry Little Christmasâ
Introduced on social media with the caption âthis emo cover brought to you by the atheist who loves Christmas,â this post-album loosie sees Bridgers reworking one of the best holiday songs in her trademarked remorseful delivery. Accompanied by a lone guitar and bare instrumentation, this is the one Christmas song thatâs guaranteed to make you cry at least one or two tears into your hot chocolate.
Best Use of an Englishman Doing Spoken Word Narration
Winner: King Krule âBermondsey Bosom (Right)â
Framed as the later-album counterpart to âBermondsey Bosom (Left),â âBermondsey Bosom (Right)â is a jazzy and fluid track that uses Archy Ivan Marshallâs father to weave a brief but illustrative tale of darkness. Only one minute long, the song is a fantastic and moody diversion in an album thatâs brimming over the top with unique ideas.
Runner-up: Feist - âCenturyâ
As much as I like Feistâs Pleasure and her use of Pulpsâ Jarvis Cocker on âCentury,â this entry gets dinged solely for its mathematical inaccuracies. Next time you get this specific about the length of your dark night of the soul, make sure you fact check beforehand.
Most Anticipated Release of 2018
Finally, letâs end by looking forward at two records that I canât wait to hear in 2018.
Winner: Snail Mail - Unknown Debut
From Tiny Desk performances to Matador co-signs, itâs been a banner year for Lindsey Jordan. Lovingly documented in my guide to female-fronted music in 2017, I first discovered Snail Mail back in May as they opened for Girlpool in concert. For the last song of their set, the groupâs drummer and bassist left the stage, leaving frontwoman Lindsey Jordan alone in the spotlight facing a rapt audience. With just a guitar and a mic she played âAnytime, â and I was left with my jaw on the floor. It was an awe-inspiring performance, one of my favorites of the year, and a moment that Iâll always remember. To see the traction theyâve gained over the past several months has been nothing short of incredible. Watching Jordan grow has already been rewarding, and her success is incredibly well-deserved. Snail Mailâs 2018 debut LP should be something else.
Runner-up: Shortly - Unknown Debut
Fronted by Alexandria Maniak, Shortly is a reverb-dripping emo act that Iâd never heard of until I saw her open for Aaron West live. While Shortly only has two songs currently released, sheâs already signed to Triple Crown records with a debut record scheduled for next spring. To say I was blown away by her live performance would be an understatement. Perhaps one of my favorite sets of the entire year, she took the whole room by surprise and had everyone listening with a hush by the time her first song was over. Based on what I saw, sheâs currently on track to be the worldâs next Julien Baker with sadder music, slower tunes, and more colorful hair. I absolutely cannot wait to see what the future holds for this promising artist.
