Loggerhead Shrikes are an Interesting Combination
Shrike A couple of weeks ago, I took a trip into town on my day off. I wanted it to be a fairly quick trip, so I almost decided against taking my camera, but I ran into an unusual situation that just reinforced my belief that I should take it with me where ever I go. I found this pretty little loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) perched in a tree not far from where I was parked when I came…

Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) 💕🌈
The only shrike species endemic to North America, this tiny predatory bird is famous for impaling their prey on branches, thorns, and barbed wire!

Article: The FBI isn't just hunting psychopaths, they're head-hunting them too, offering competitive pay and benefits in the hopes of using one demented mind to catch another. Another Shrike In the Nest?
by Frederica Lounds
As reported before by Tattlecrime, the FBI maintains jurisdiction in the case of Garret Jacob Hobbs, the Minnesota Shrike. But as days turn to weeks, desperation has begun to take hold amongst the investigators. An embarrassing truth is beginning to emerge: There are no new leads on the whereabouts of the Shrike's seven missing victims. As families await any word at all about their lost daughters, the case looks as though it has stalled. Tip lines are open, but they have so far yielded little to nothing. Where lie these poor women who deserve a proper funeral? When approached for comment on the investigation, things with Graham took a surprising and dark turn. Upset at the probity of the questions at hand, Graham threatened, "It's not very smart to piss of a guy who thinks about killing people for a living." A statement like this calls into question the very mind and method of Will Graham and his FBI apologists. This is a man who skirted normal FBI... Read More

It Takes One To Catch One?
PHOTO EXLUSIVE - INSIDE THE LEEDS HOME
Exclusive photos of house where the Jacobi family was slaughtered.
The Jacobi home nestled in a sleepy suburb of Chicago that was startled awake by the shocking murder that has changed the area forever. Residents that have lived in the area for almost twenty years have said that they will now consider moving. See the disturbing exclusive photos inside.
Insane Fiend Consulted in Mass Murders by Agent He Tried To Kill
by Freddie Lounds
FEDERAL MANHUNTERS, stymied in their search for the Tooth Fairy, have turned to the most savage killer in captivity for help. Hannibal the Cannibal has gotten a call from a very special visitor- none other than Will Graham himself. I saw it with my own eyes, Graham coming form the main entrance to the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane on a recent afternoon. This mysterious visit had this reporter curious to its nature. What could Graham, who was almost a victim of Lecter himself, have to discuss with the Mad Doctor? A bit more digging lead me to face to face discussion with Will Graham. Needless to say he was evasive. But I was able to suss out that Graham has begun working for the FBI again on the Tooth Fairy investigation. And he was in fact visiting Lecter to help him get information on the Tooth Fairy murders. Is this really where to FBI has sunk? Hiring a man with questionable stability to get information form a clinically insane psychotic? If this is where the FBI has been able to take this investigation, this reporter is worried. Worried for the family left behind by the Leeds and Jacobi murders. And worried for the next family on whatever deranged list the Tooth Fairy has made. For surely there will be a next family. There have been three so far the the Tooth Fairy shows no sign of stopping. And frankly- what's to stop him? Certainly no local police agencies. Certainly no the FBI who have done nothing to further the investigations since they took over several months ago.
CANNIBAL KILLER FEEDS THE FEDS
[alt] FBI IN BED WITH THE DEVIL
[alt] TOOTH FAIRY INVESTIGATION BUNGLED BY FEDS?
Desperation Leads to Partnership with Cannibalistic Killer The recent apparent partnership between the FBI and Hannibal Lecter has this reporter wondering if there is anyone with whom the FBI won't partner. One wonders the validity of whatever information can be gleaned from someone who is so clinically insane as to devour those around him. How much can Lecter be trusted not to give misleading information to protect perhaps a fraternity of killers with whom he would most definitely be a member. And what does Lecter get from all this? Special privileges? Or maybe just the excitement of getting inside information on the violent nature of the Tooth Fairy crimes. This would no doubt a source of great pleasure for someone so diabolical in nature. I wonder how this makes the families of the victims feel. To know that Hannibal the Cannibal is drooling over the bloody remains of the lost loved ones. Is whatever little information can be provided by this this 'expert' killer worth making the victim's families continue to suffer?

got a favorite bird?
So hard to answer! For the most part it genuinely changes continuously to the point where whatever bird I saw today is my favorite. But I have a few special birds for sure, like any birder. To keep it narrowed down just a little I’m keeping it to birds I’ve seen in person (still waiting to spot my crested caracara). Here are a few category nominations for birds that are particularly meaningful to me!
Bird of prey:
American kestrel, red-tailed hawk, and Swallow-tailed kite
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wading bird:
Roseate spoonbill
Tumblr media
Passerine:
Loggerhead shrike, Florida scrub jay
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Diving bird:
Nazca booby, Northern gannet (haven’t photographed one yet, photo by Owen Deutsch)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Crane:
Sandhill crane ❤️
Tumblr media
These are some of my great loves but truly there are so many more! I could keep going and make this so long honestly. There are too many awesome birds on this Earth!

Moth of the Week
Ornate Bella Moth
Utetheisa ornatrix
Tumblr media
This moth was first described as Phalaena ornatrix and Phalaena bella by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. In 1960, it became known as the Utetheisa ornatrix by William Trowbridge Merrifield Forbes. It’s also called the ornate bella moth, ornate moth, bella moth or rattlebox moth and is in the family Erebidae.
Description The body is white with black spots on the back of the thorax and head. The legs are black and white and antennae are black and filiform. The hindwings are a pale or bright pink with an irregular black border. The forewings are orangish-yellow with white bands surrounding black dots. Patterns may vary. These colors are used to warn predators of the moth’s toxicity.
Wingspan range: 33 - 46 mm (1.3 - 1.8 in)
Diet and Habitat The larva feed on plants of the Crotalaria species such as Avon Park rattlebox, rabbitbells, smooth rattlebox, and showy rattlebox. These plants provide the larva and adults with alkaloid compounds which are the unpalatable to predators. They accumulate these toxins from the seed pods of these plants, however if the larva can’t eat a seed pod due to competition they will have to eat the leaves where is concentration is much lower. Larvae may prey on/eat others of its kind to maintain high levels of alkaloids. Alkaloids are also passed down from parents to eggs.
Its northern most range is from Connecticut westward to southeastern Nebraska and southward to southern New Mexico and Florida in the United States. Its southern most range is from Mexico, South America, and Central America. It’s southernmost reach is southeastern Brazil. This species is more common in tropical parts of this range due to host plant populations.
Mating This species demonstrates a form of sexual selection. The females choose a male to mate with based on the intensity of their pheromones. During mating, the females receive a “spermatophore” from the males containing sperm, nutrients, and alkaloid compounds. After mating, the females choose which males’ sperm fertilizes the eggs. Usually, the female chooses the male with the most alkaloids which tends to be the larger males. Adult males invest up to 11% of their body mass to create a spermatophore they provide to a female during mating. The nutrients given in the spermatophore allow the female to produce an average of 32 additional eggs in her brood.
Females mate an average of 4-5 times and up to 13 times, each with a different male. In the north there there two generations per year with more in the south.
Predators The larva and adults keep predators at bay with alkaloid compounds accumulated during feeding and inherited from parents. These toxins make them unpalatable to their main predators: spiders and bats. Specifically, the adult moth secretes an alkaloid foam from its head when threatened. However, larva and moths with low concentrations are more susceptible to predation than those with higher concentrations who are usually released and unharmed after being caught.
These toxins do not work against some predators like loggerhead shrikes.
Unlike other moths of the Arctiidae subfamily, this species moth does not have a way to audibly communicate their toxic which would help it to avoid bats altogether.
Fun Fact This species was first described on 1758 by Carl Linnaeus as two different species: Phalaena ornatrix was used to describe the paler moth specimens, and Phalanea bella, described the bright pink moth specimens. It was then moved to the genus Utetheisa in 1819 by Hübner. After nearly a century of struggling to identify this species and its subspecies, Forbes combined both species Utetheisa ornatrix and Utetheisa bella into one in 1960: Utetheisa ornatrix.

Davis was still getting used to life in Shrike Heights. After all, it had only been a week since he'd been here, and his life was drastically different than it had been back in Boston. Before he'd been a military man respected by both the army and his family. Now he'd been honorably discharged, so the military definitely still respected him, but his family was another story. Thousands of miles from the place that was no longer home, Davis felt a bit adrift. He'd been here before to visit his grandmother before she'd retired to Florida, so the town and the house were somewhat familiar. But everything was so different, and Davis hated the way that made him feel. He'd only been working at the mall for a few days, so whenever he could, he walked around, getting to know the place; maybe if his workplace felt more familiar, he'd be a little more comfortable.
Knowing the mall better would have definitely come in handy in the situation Davis found himself in now. It was near the end of his shift, and he walked into the store with the stolen item in his hand; someone had just tried to shoplift it, the clerk calling security, and Davis was pleased he had managed to find the perpetrator and retrieve the item; at least he could do that right. "So I got it back, but the guy got away unfortunately," Davis said as he approached the clerk. But then he paused, looking around - this was the wrong store. "Uh...you're not the person who called me, are you?" he asked, feeling embarrassed. He didn't know what store he was in, nor did he know where the store he was supposed to be was located. "Dammit," Davis muttered under his breath. "Sorry," he apologized, "I guess I need to learn my way around a little more."

hey look, it’s damien skylar! he’s twenty-four years old, he’s lived in shrike heights for two weeks, and he’s currently working at a new chapter. i heard he’s pretty standoffish, but i think he’s so smart at the same time. can he make it out alive?
name: damien skylar age: 24 star sign: scorpio
(( tw: foster system, implied neglect/abuse ))
damien skylar was forgotten from the start.
most of what he claims to know about his early life is made up: he was born to a hollywood starlet, but there was scandal, and he was given up to avoid the press hounding him his whole life. or he was born to poor coal miners in pennsylvania who couldn't care for him properly. the details are hazy, and he's been through too many social workers, wandered from state to state, so that his file in the system got fucked up before he had even turned ten.
too many foster homes to count — or perhaps he cares too little to count.
a boyhood filled with misbehaving, with acting out to get attention, with learning the worst things he could do, always toeing the line, always pushing people away. never getting — never accepting — what he wanted, which was love.
his moods blew with the wind as he turned towards teenagehood, and then adulthood. it was no surprise to anyone that he aged out of the system, never having known stability and telling himself he didn't care for it. at 18 he left his final foster home for the local community college. he finished a degree but never spent more than three semesters in any one place, transferring schools until he got a degree in the only thing he'd ever cared about: books. a bachelor's in literature wouldn't serve him well, he knew, but he had never been one for practicality.
romantic flings came and went but his favorite characters were always within the cracked spine of a book, there to return to. he found echoes of his own passions and rages within heathcliff, his desire for grandiosity within gatsby, his sense of living outside of time within orlando. the classics called to him more than anything else, and he'd gladly agree that he's a literary snob, though there are some contemporary writers he admires — Toni Morrison, James Baldwin, Don Delillo. if he's honest with himself, he'll admit that he wants to be like them someday, publishing books. but his own inability to focus on any one project stands in the way of that.
after graduating college, he moved around. he hated florida so he tried new york. hated that even more and made his way to texas. texas, he didn't mind so much, and it was there that he first heard about shrike heights and particularly the string of strange murders happening at the local mall. following a shitty breakup (which he does not want to talk about), he followed the news to colorado.
hey, maybe if he's lucky, he'll meet an untimely end — just like all of his favorite characters.
Tumblr media
hey look, it’s avalon rivera! she’s thirty-five years old, she’s lived in shrike heights for thirty-five years, and she’s currently working at karaoke dokie. i heard she’s pretty pessimistic, but i think she’s resourceful at the same time. can she make it out alive?
name: avalon rivera age: 35 star sign: virgo
(( tw: death ))
"avalon's always been a bit strange" — words used by her mother to explain away her fascinations with the dead, dark spaces, horror movies. "all things creepy crawly," her big sister would say, prom queen of 1972 and won't let anyone forget it. rachel had no dreams beyond that crown being placed on her head, and that was her big problem. for avalon, her dreams were always her favorite part of the night.
never much of a people-person and not desiring to become one, avalon's father always understood her best. angel was not a popular man in town, not like avalon's mother and sister. he was a misfit just like ava herself, and when there's a pair of misfits, well, they're hardly misfits at all, are they? the two of them had a fascination with last words, with the things people said as they were dying, often poetic, sometimes funny, sometimes just sad. avalon couldn't tell which type she liked the best.
it was a freak accident. a sudden one. an icy patch of road. dark — past midnight. the motorcycle had no hope of making it, and angel had no chance of survival. dead on impact. this was what the coroner said in an attempt to console the family, though these words have been rattling around in ava's head ever since she heard them.
"dead on impact."
"dead on impact."
what a way to go. no time to think, no time to do anything. no final thoughts at all, and perhaps worst of all: no last words, at least not that anyone would ever know of.
this was two years ago, and while before that, she had held a steady job, climbing up to management at the movie theater, a job she actually enjoyed — she'd lost it in the aftermath of angel's death, and she hasn't been able to hold down a job since. whatever it is, she makes it only about 3 months before saying something she shouldn't to a customer, a coworker, sassing the wrong person at the wrong time, showing up late, not showing up at all. she's thirty-fucking-five and while she went from a steady job and a girlfriend she loved, she's now lost all of that.
this job at the karaoke place — fucking gag her — is a last resort. if this one doesn't last, she's not sure what she'll do. it's not much of a life, but hey, at least she hasn't yet been killed.

Maybe, just maybe, Gideon is the most sought after serial killer at large... a killer who's eluded the FBI for years and has baffled their most "gifted" profilers. The said killer? None other than the "Chesapeake Ripper". This would explain why the Ripper's been silent more than two years.

His latest victim, Dr. Paul Carruthers, prominent Baltimore psychologist was found earlier today. A gruesome slaying, that appeared to have caused the victim great physical distress can only be the work of the so-called Chesapeake Ripper, recently escaped from prison. The nature of the wounds seem to be sending a strong message to law enforcement, particularly Agent Jack Crawford of the FBI. Local law enforcement and the FBI were not available for comment. This reporter is continuing to investigate and will bring you updates as they become available.

Day 255
April 14, 2023
Finished a peer review from yesterday and caught up on some emergency management news:
Starting today, all text messages sent on FEMA mobile devices will be preserved and can be used for the Freedom of Information Act.
The Center for Biological Diversity and eight Puerto Rican community groups are suing FEMA due to its plans to rebuild Puerto Rico’s power grid without focusing on renewable energy.
Portions of South Florida are flooding after major rainfall. Fort Lauderdale experienced a 1-in-1000-year rainfall event, receiving over 25 inches of rain in 24 hours. (This is like getting over 1/3 of the average year’s rain in a single day.)
I finished drawing some Florida native birds to go in the thank you cards, too. I’ve been working on them all week since I can’t currently draw for long. The birds are the northern parula, northern cardinal, northern mockingbird, loggerhead shrike, blue-gray gnatcatcher, cedar waxwing, brown thrasher, Carolina chickadee, tufted titmouse, and red-eyed vireo.
Tumblr media
I packed and watched a movie with the team after work.

For all of it’s macabre feeding habits, the Loggerhead shrike’s song is surprisingly sweet. I’ve been admiring this species for quite some time and I was so thrilled to finally chance upon one in the wild!
