Apparently, someone in Florida just noticed Michelangelo’s 15th-century sculpture of David doesn’t have a stitch of clothes on! They just realized — David, infact, is stark naked! As a result, a teacher in Tallahassee, Florida, was fired. For an art historian, it is kind of exciting when a work of art has the power to ruffle feathers, cause scandal and make people think outside their little boxes. But firing a teacher for enlightening her students about Michelangelo’s extraordinary masterpiece, the David, is absurd! Learn more about this story in a new post on the Studentessa Matta website and what the Mayor of Florence has decided to do for the teacher who got fired. 23 May 1498, execution by burning of Italian Dominican friar and preacher Girolamo Savonarola. Denouncing clerical corruption, despotic rule and the exploitation of the poor. He prophesied the coming of a biblical flood, and reformation of the church. In September 1494, at the height of the invasion of French king Charles VIII, Savonarola’s prophecies struck a chord with the youth of Florence, who led a puritanical revolt against the ruling Medici’s; culminating in February 1497, in the ‘bonfires of the vanities’,when his supporters forcibly collected and burned thousands of works of art, and books in Florence. Excommunicated by the pope in May 1497, his supporters began to fade, and he was condemned, hanged, and burned in the main square of Florence on this day. 21st December 1375, death of Italian writer, poet, and Renaissance humanist, Giovanni Boccaccio. One of his best known works is the ‘Decameron’, completed in 1353. The work is formed of 100 tales told by seven women, and three men, as they shelter in a villa outside Florence to escape the pestilence of the Black Death in 1348. The pandemic of that year killed three-quarters of the city's inhabitants, and across Europe is estimated to have killed between 30% and 60% of the total population. The plague during the 14th century, is estimated to have killed perhaps as many as 100 million people, taking 200 years for the population levels to recover to pre plague numbers. All art shown is influenced by the history of the Black Death, and can be found for sale on the website.
