Kaka compilation
Because everyone is sleeping on him. Witness his greatness!! First two Kaka colored icons were colored by me, lineart by Ryoko Kui though!
Kaka & Kiki are kinda like Laios & Falin… Kaka being stoic and giving repressed energy like early Laios, Kiki being cryptic and always smiling and kinda soft-looking. Autism siblings 2, ostracized and othered as kids and have a deep bond due to sticking together through it all, though unlike with Laios their parents are very loving so Kaka developed family as a big value more than Laios (bc asides for Falin Laios doesn’t care much about it).
In the gnome festival comic you can see Kaka is more emotive than he seems! Full with a :3 face, and he’s the one crying at the end. He’s insecure about his legs and being tall… It really got to him. Conceal don’t feel. In the gnome festival comic you also see him sensing others’ gaze on him and that something is off unlike Kiki, again Laios-like in the way that judgement from others gets to him more than her.
#The twins are so autistic swag#A falin just as chilled out and smiling and a laios who never stopped repressing#They’re so neurodivergent and they’re allowed to just exist I love you Kui. Kaka is just literally me#I looove characters that are hard to know and hard to read/easily misunderstood. They’re my favorite thing#LOOK AT THE WAY HE SMILES THE WAY HE BLUSHESSS HE’S PERFECT and I would take a harpoon to the chest for him thank u#I do love Kiki too btw but I’ve been seeing her in fancontent and posts way more than Kaka so I had to give him some spotlight#But also Laios is my fave of the Toudens so this very much checks out#Their pre-Flokes story would be interesting to analyze too#Dungeon meshi#delicious in dungeon#kaka floke#Kaka#Kiki and kaka#floke twins#As you may guess from my new-ish icon I am in my kaka era#ALSO I SWEAR TO GOD STOP BEING MEAN ABOUT HIS NAME#KA IS A SYLLABLE IN MY IRL NAME. YES I WAS BULLIED AND CALLED KAKA AS A KID. MY NAME ALSO MEANS UGLY STUFF IN A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE#KAKA’S A PRETTY NAME I’LL DIE ON THIS HILL. IT’S NOT WEIRD IF YOU DON’T MAKE IT WEIRD#Oh also another laios falin parallel: they both sort-of-date the same woman

Yoohoo and howdy to U mister meshi, I wanted to ask Ur opinion on the representation of twins in media or in specific to dunmeshi. i think it would be interesting seeing what U think is good or bad rep
(thankyou for your time)
Well I'm not a twin and I don't personally know any twins, but from what I can tell it's at least 'okay' in dungeon meshi?
Since Kiki and Kaka don't really look exactly alike, have different personalities, dress differently, aren't constantly in the same room at the same time don't speak in unison (The complaints I've seen about twins in other shows). They're pretty much average siblings?
The one thing you could argue is the matching names but it was clear their parent's didn't care enough to give them proper names and there's this context too
About twin representation in other media I'm really not the person to speak about it, I had hardly thought about it until recently when I saw someone mentioning how bad twin\triplet\etc representation is.
#Kiki Floke#Kaka Floke#if there was other twins in dungeon meshi I dont remember right now#ask#meta ask

kiki floke to thistle scale of transracial adoptee coping mechanisms
#the scale goes kiki > kaka > izutsumi > rin > kabru > tade > thistle#am i missing anyone?#this is just a first draft so it's unrebloggable but i welcome suggestions#doesn't feel right to call it transracial adoption when three of these people were legal property and another one was labelled as evidence#framing it as a longer question about “being raised by a different race” is probably the solution#the edges (floke twins & thistle) are pretty set but idk re: the middle#hard to separate the damage from their living situation from the trauma of the events that led to that situation#something else that could be solved by a more refined research question i think#“how well are you coping with?” “how much did it fuck you up?”#dunmeshi#dungeon meshi manga spoilers#my dm thoughts

extremely indulgent Danmeshi idol AU I'm sooooo sorry
Falin, Marcille, and Kabru are trainees competing in a survival show. Laios was a popular fansite who accidentally inspired Falin to pursue an idol career, she dragged Marcille into it, and he decided to be their manager. Chilchuck is a former idol who's currently their main manager while Laios is still training
Kabru recognizes Laios as an idol fan and is worried he got into the industry for malicious purposes until he meets Falin lol. he spends a lot of time taking care of his own manager and avoiding Milsiril's stage mom-isms
#dungeon meshi#Senshi is the CEO of their company and they scout Izutsumi off the street at some point#Mithrun was a famous idol who retired after a huge giant terrible scandal#the Canaries are a senior coed group with a member rotation history#Chil's latest concern is that his daughters would follow in his footsteps (they're not interested)#the Floke twins are AKMU ig#if you recognize the outfits I based these on then let me give you a kiss#also the Winged Lion is in charge of the show#make of that what you will#hwshln#idolbap

i have to get this out of the way, re: dungeon meshi discussions
major spoilers ahead, obviously.
you know for a series that focuses so much on platonic and familial relationships it’s weird that dungeon meshi has attracted so much useless ship wars though. the most important driving force in the story is two sibling relationships (laios’s search for falin, thistle’s search for delgal) and one of the central themes is how loving others way too much can lead to your downfall (thistle’s desperate attempt to keep his loved ones leads to his mental state deteriorating so much he starts torturing people he claims to protect, marcille’s fear of losing her friends leads to her being easily manipulated by the main antagonist)
even with regards to falin. thistle wants to bring the ‘brother’ he raised back at all costs, he saw a young human woman as nothing more than a dragon, his tool. marcille wants to bring falin back at all costs, she didn’t care about the repercussions of using monster meat instead of animal meat even though she was an expert at ancient magic and should know why it’s such a dangerous practice.
each and every single one of the major characters has some form of tragedy with their family one way or another: the toudens, marcille and her dad. chilchuck and his wife. senshi’s entire backstory. izutsumi’s hidden desire for a mother. namari’s father. shuro and his family. kabru and his mother(both tallman and elf). mithrun and his brother. thistle and the melinis.
even some of the minor characters: flamela and her dead twin sister. the twins and the floke couple. kuro being the closest mickbell has to a family. etc etc
as someone who has reread this manga several times by now, i wonder if people just… read it once as fast as they could and act like they’re some sort of authority on fan discussion. i’ve seen people brag about reading the entire thing in one sitting as if it’s something to be proud of. this manga isn’t meant to be read that fast, that’s how you get people claiming that laios doesn’t reaaally love falin as much as marcille does.
to these people, laios just gets in the way, as if it wasn’t his idea to go down the dungeon in the first place, it wasn’t him who said his pain doesn’t matter because falin suffered more than him, it wasn’t him who felt immense guilt for leaving falin behind, it wasn’t him who found her skull, it wasn’t him who killed her to save her from her chimera form. i feel like people forget about the ‘too’ part when marcille said “i miss falin too”
marcille knows how much falin and laios love each other. that’s why she asked him if she’s allowed to resurrect her and didn’t act on her own. that’s why when both times a shapeshifting monster copied marcille to trick laios, it was what she looked like at the time she was reviving falin.
as someone who DOES ship farcille, none of the romance is canon. this isn’t meant to be anti-farcille. one of the post-canon comics is about falin gently turning down shuro because she wants to travel the world, “you can’t tie a dragon down” after all. she wants to travel the world and find herself because she doesn’t know who she is outside of marcille and laios. even marcille, who was hoping she’d reject him, tears up because of how beautiful and tragic it was.
there are a lot of ship teases because what author doesn’t like a good ship tease. but to say that dungeon meshi is a romantic love more than it is a story about family(both real and found) is a great misinterpretation of the text.

kabru and the dungeon lords
kabru is a very critical character to dungeon meshi for a thousand and one reasons, and not merely for his status as the point-of-view character in the story's b-plot. kabru represents the compass by which dungeon meshi's world works. he has big-picture motives that involve the entire world, much grander than the original a-plot of "let's save falin."
he is our classic hero, a character who suffered great personal tragedy and must ensure that no one suffers the same fate. as such, he is a great parallel for dungeon meshi's most integral characters:
the dungeon lords themselves.
🚨manga spoilers ahead.🚨
thistle
picture this: you are a child, separate from anyone else in the world who looks like you due to circumstances beyond your control. you are taken by pale-skinned adults who try to treat you well; who clothe you, feed you, and put a roof over your head.
it is not enough.
who am i describing - kabru, or thistle?
kabru-thistle parallels focus on their shared past as trans-racial adoptees. their shared experiences are not a universal one to all trans-racial adoptions in the dungeon meshi universe: the floke twins are treated well by their gnomish foster (grand)parents; allowed to be children while they are children and treated as adults when they are adults.
not all trans-racial adoptees are given the same courtesy. kabru was raised by an elf who infantilized him, even once he was fully-grown. milsiril did not always know what kabru needed from her, so she defaulted to treating him the way she would treat an elf his age rather than understand what his age meant as a tall-man.
by contrast, thistle was raised by tall-men. freinag saw thistle as a son and so he and delgal thought themselves as brothers. but as delgal aged and matured, thistle remained stagnant. eventually, delgal's relative age surpassed thistle's- but no one could even conceive of that, because thistle's numerical age made the tall-men around him treat him as an adult rather than a teenager.
they both feel immense responsibility for the tragedies suffered by their people. kabru explicitly believes there must be a "reason" he survived utaya and that the reason was to destroy the dungeons to ensure it never happened again, and thistle IS the reason the golden country survived their war, and why eodio made it to adulthood all.
kabru and thistle are characters pre- and post-accomplishing their goals. kabru has yet to assume total responsibility; thistle already has.
they must save them- they must protect them all.
[🩵]
marcille
once upon a time, a child lost a parent before they were ready to, and the trajectory of their life changed forever. desperate to understand, the child grew into an adult and dedicated themself to preventing their personal loss from happening to anyone else ever again. as a result, they looked downward into the dungeon's depths.
they will find the answers they seek.
who am i describing- kabru, or marcille?
marcille and kabru stand as important secondary figures to laios, our main protagonist. in the words of another excellent post, they are the heaven foils to laios's earth. where laios is grounded and thinking about the here and now, they have both identified big picture problems plaguing their world and pursue these goals with intense fervor.
however, these goals have been diverted by censorship. marcille cannot access information about historical ancient magic through traditional means and the elves won't tell kabru what happened to utaya's dungeon, so they both decide to go and do something with their own two hands.
entering the dungeon is a step towards their grander goals, which are both rooted in opposition to long-lived supremacy. critically: the solutions they come to are vastly different.
marcille's solution is very fantastical - "fixing" everyone's lifespans by making EVERYONE long-lived (though her original solution seemed to be more grounded; being a lord gave her the chance to indulge in the full fantasy).
on the other hand, kabru wants something more concrete and based in the real world. he wants to use the dungeon as a means to an end before destroying it entirely, whereas marcille wants the dungeon to be the end. hers is a magic idea borne about by escapism, while kabru wants to solve a societal problem with something tangible to improve the lives of the shorter-lived without resorting to the fantastical.
(note the similarity in these compositions!)
kabru and marcille are aiming for the heavens; they have chosen to act as stewards to bring about a better future for as many people as possible.
but eventually, they must crash back down to earth.
[🩵]
mithrun
a long time ago, a dungeon lord met their maker and the demon ate its fill, but failed to breach the surface. carnage and destruction was sown in its wake. in the aftermath, a survivor dedicated himself completely and utterly to the cause with no room for reproach.
the dungeon will be conquered. and if he has it his way, it will be conquered by his hand.
who am i describing- kabru, or mithrun?
if thistle represents kabru's past and marcille represents kabru's present, than mithrun represents one branch of kabru's future- and a rather bleak one.
mithrun has suffered great tragedy at the hands of a dungeon and, as a result, dedicated himself to be what he believes is his one remaining desire: to finally be consumed entirely. he thinks he has nothing else to live for, so he runs himself ragged every single day just to inch closer and closer at a chance to kill himself while pursuing his goal.
this great fervor is one that kabru artificially mimics long before meeting mithrun. kabru is willing to die for his goals. he does die for his goals. he thinks he is going to die without a chance for resurrection when he sabotages the canaries, which is why his 'last' thought is "it's up to you now, laios!"
remember: kabru believes his survival has to serve a purpose- his survival must have been 'worth it.' in order to make his own survival palettable, kabru dedicates himself entirely to the dungeon's destruction without long-lived intervention as a means to avoid repeating utaya's fate. kabru self-deprives, fails to care for himself, and he is constantly killed in pursuit of his goal to conquer the dungeon before people like the canaries can. while kabru has desires, he only indulges in the one that has guided him for over a decade.
functionally, he and mithrun are identical when they first meet.
kabru has purposefully deprived himself of his desires beyond ensuring another utaya doesn't happen again, and mithrun is proof of what happens when you follow that to its logical conclusion. however, over the course of their week together and the final arc of the story, kabru makes the choice to divert from mithrun's fate.
kabru looks into the eye of his ultimate goal, and in the culmination of his arc, ultimately refuses this destiny.
what do you want, kabru? are you hungry, kabru?
kabru indulges. instead of blindly following through the dungeon's destruction and sacrificing what he wants for the greater good, he wants, and he befriends laios instead of ending his life. he leaves mithrun's fate behind...
...and senshi- one of the most steadfast representatives of dungeon meshi's thesis- sets mithrun on a path where he, too, can learn to chase after newer, healthier desires.
[🩵]
laios
one day, a child was hungry for the answer to a question: "what is wrong with me?"
there is no satisfactory answer. a mother and a sister believe nothing is wrong, but everyone else in their small world disagrees. those eyes, that personality- something must be wrong.
but there is no recourse.
so, these children endeavor to focus on the world around them in ways that won't hurt them. one chooses to study and love humans, because humans are beautiful and complex and amazing. the other chooses to study and love monsters, because monsters are easier to understand and always obey one simple rule: eat or be eaten.
they double down on their interests soon enough. monsters have hurt one child enough, and humans can't get enough of hurting the other.
you know which one is kabru. you know which one is laios- dungeon meshi's fabled narrative foils.
laios and kabru are as textually close to being explicit foils as humanly possible. the first sentence of kabru's page of the adventurer's bible says it perfectly: "in every possible way, he's a contrast with laios. laios loves monsters, while kabru has an endless interest in humans" (56).
in basic terms, a foil character is a character with traits that contrast against another's, typically the main protagonist. this contrast serves to highlight the themes of the story, and we see that illustrated perfectly with laios and kabru.
where kabru has denied himself care, laios gives it to him without thinking. where laios believed no one could ever want to be his friend, kabru proves him wrong. the nature of nourishment and human connection are both critical foundations to dungeon meshi's story, and the main character struggling with human connection while his foil struggles with nourishment is no mistake.
kabru wanted to be laios's friend all along. the b-plot of dungeon meshi is driven by kabru's unconscious desire to understand and ultimately aid one inscrutable laios touden. the reason they cross paths at all is because kabru wants to meet him! he takes a chance when toshiro appears and sees his chance through.
but kabru doesn't realize it until he's already said it. he betrays himself, completely unaware that his supposed interest in the touden siblings skews a little more to the right than he could have possibly known.
killing laios would have been the ultimate preventative measure. he was yet to be dungeon lord, and with the canaries intent on handling marcille, kabru could have dealt with him right then on that cliff. but kabru doesn't take the opportunity because he doesn't want to.
he'd rather befriend laios than see him dead, and he takes the chance by the sleeve and doesn't let go until he is listened to.
and in the end, kabru is rewarded for his leap of faith: laios puts an end to the demon. laios has ensured that another utaya will never happen again.
laios saves the world.
all because kabru allowed himself to be selfish.

tansu floke (the old gnome man who hired namari) interests me because he's pretty hostile towards elves but raised a couple of tallmen children like his own. he's like an 19th century frenchman who raised a pair of vietnamese twins out of genuine love and compassion, but if you bring up the british around him you'll hear european shrimp color racism the likes of which are rarely experienced outside of the balkans

Can I inflict a thought on you?
Apiary dynamics dungeon meshi party. It's an affliction that's technically non-human in origin. It makes all of their specific tendencies even worse. They can only separate so far. Everyone can only deal with some of the consequences.
-Faer
👀
I mean I’m chewing my way slowly through the omegaverse version so it’s not out of my way
(The elves have weaponized their omegas’ “if the fight gets to us it’s to the death IMMEDIATELY” lack of chill to form the Canaries)
I gotta do a rerun through the levels but off the top of my head I am gonna start unconventional
Chilchuck’s the queen
It’s his dad energy. He doesn’t necessarily accept anyone he works with into the hive, but all the half-foots are his and hooboy does it make him cranky to be away from the guild HQ
But he couldn’t let any of his people go down to the dungeon as deep as Laios and Falin were planning, so he dusted off his gear and assumed it’d be quick
Except
Falin caught Apiary
And Chilchuck has not yet worked out how to get her into his hive-union cuz she’s definitely not a half-foot, but the adoption process already started
(Godiva’s tempting for Falin with her healing to have the nurse/caretaker role, but she’s just so bonk happy I’m going with Arcadia. She likes to go and collect things and gather up the bugs and bring people snacks, she basically did not notice any change
She’s just. Slightly more insistent that people eat the things she brings them. And more likely to run off after shiny things)
None of them know Chilchuck’s a queen, and at first it was only Falin so he was just Suffering but making do
But Falin died
And that’s his goddamn hivemate he’s not going anywhere like it or not - maybe being estranged from his bio kids (they did not agree to move and join the union and he’s. Not up to trying to persuade them.) makes him overly aggressive, or just overly protective and unusually likely to risk himself rather than his hivemates
(He’s still not goddamn fighting and you can’t make him this is what he has hivemates for!)
Senshi is sitting on the Arcadia/Godiva line too, because he is a hive of one but did not question why he fell so easily in with Laios (Chilchuck’s) group
(Chilchuck is not sure how he keeps acquiring all these other definitely-not-half-foots as hivemates (it’s because you keep leaving the hive and miss your kids sir you’re pack bonding with rocks) but dammit he’s got another one)
Marcille and Laios don’t catch apiary until they get hit with the dryad spores in the dungeon’s depths, but they’re both Ivanhoes so there are no immediate consequences if you don’t count them both suddenly getting way more protective of the others
Izutsumi is Izutsumi
Both Flokes are Godiva, Tansu’s the queen and yes this is why they acquire new grandbabies so readily
And because I’m Basic™️, the Canaries!
Cithis is not apiary but she can and will steal every single fucking hive she sees, immaculate queen vibes
Lycion’s a Godiva, natural caretaker who is the tank pretty much by default so he gets antsy when he has to do combat chores rather than tending to his hive
Fleki isn’t apiary but she’s godiva-sexual because godDAMN she needs someone competent to take care of her and she likes belonging
Otta has had shots to prevent catching apiary but they make her read like a Libertine (drone) to the other bees. She is very okay with this
Pattadol has only just got her anti-apiary shots but it might be too late for her tbh
Flamela’s a Quixote, she caught it from her twin after they got a visit from the capital (mmmmmm high rates of apiary among noble elves? Maybe?), her twin was being raised to be the next queen but Flamela’s just waaaaaaay too aggressive and wants to stab everything
This makes it significantly harder for her to work with Mithrun, who was a Quixote before he got broken by the demon and is now a deeply fucked up little Godiva
(because he really does try and save every single dungeon lord. All of them. He wants to help them, get them away and let them recover too. And if they won’t he’ll kill them)
This leads to them butting heads all the harder because Flamela’s instincts insist Mithrun should be the one sticking behind her and letting her go do the dangerous shit, but all of their orders INSIST Mithrun go running face first into danger and she has to hang back
And neither of them are gonna disobey the queen but Mithrun’s just not particularly connected to his gender for anything except the dungeon lords, so he doesn’t act like a Godiva except when he’s around a dungeon, and then he’s full Mama Bear and you stay the fuck outta his way until he determines if this dungeon lord is Baby (to be saved) or Toast
(He still doesn’t feel any of his apiary needs either, but the squad try and feed those for him by eating in front of him and taking care of him alongside their own care routines, so they can make sure he’s alright and he can see they are too
Most of that falls on Lycion as their other Godiva but it feeds his gender needs too so it all works out)
Milsiril’s actually secretly winning the record for Most Broken Godiva though (she hoards children, easy) because she constantly craves a caregiving role, but her own special brand of dungeon PTSD and asocial personality disorder make it extremely hard for her to actually form the interpersonal bonds that would make it satisfying for her
So her serial-parenting of shorter lived folks gets drastically worse, she’s the most helicopter of helicopter parents, and occasionally (regularly) leaves any trip to town with more kids than she started with
Milsiril is no longer allowed to go into town
She also absolutely did try and kidnap Mithrun into her hive rather than letting him go to fight the demon, it was 1000% a trap but because she can’t form bonds well and Mithrun can’t form bonds at all he basically wandered off one day while the kids were being noisy and they both forgot about the whole thing
Milsiril doesn’t remember it until Kabru mentions meeting Mithrun after everything’s over so she does make another vague ploy to kidnap him but Mithrun’s busy making noodles with Senshi and doesn’t notice
Kabru has had every apiary shot and takes his meds every day he is NOT catching what Milsiril got… but he’s real good at spotting it in others and playing it up
Edit: for anyone wondering about apiary:
@faeriekit I dunno if you expected this much but if not you should have by now 😅

another really fun thing about kiki is that while her brother apparently only drinks socially with family, she drinks enough that she actively hides it from the flokes. like both twins seem kind of quiet and polite in the manga, but a lot of the bonus material gives me the sense that she's actually pretty bold. we just don't get to see that side of her too often because shes with her dad
#'another' thing i say as if the last post i made about her wasnt hours ago#i want more kiki content i need to put her in the microwave#dungeon meshi#aster speaks

Blister Twins
Blister II “Kiki” facial expressions and personality based off of Kiki floke from delicious in dungeon.
Some more Kiki expressions with a Blister I “Kier” based off of kaka floke from dunmeshi.
Fun little facts/hc/trivia:
Kira “Kiki” and kier are based off of Kiki and kaka floke from dunmeshi. Kiki is more upbeat in a calm soothing way hardly raising her voice unless the time is right while kier is reserved and taciturn but he’s just as loyal as Kiki despite his complex over being the smallest out of all the ardesdale engines and not being mentioned at all during the books despite him and his sister having built the railway themselves.
Kiki is unintentionally comes off as being cryptic as she’s always seen smiling (except under certain circumstances) and rather soft-looking Very friendly and easy going
Kier is pretty stoic and quiet content with it as he gets easily flustered over being praised or any positive feedback and is secretly quite sensitive to rejection he’s the one who’s quite insecure
They both have unintentionally frightened the others with the uncanny ability to appear out of nowhere they can also speak at the same time or figure out what the other was thinking

We really get to see Kabru exercise his social awareness and his story-crafting skills this episode, like how he tailors his backstory differently to Toshiro and Namari (and the Floke twins out of frame!) - framing the massacre of his people as a result of elven interventionism and focusing on his personal tragedy; contrasting his hardworking mother to the faceless, dispassionate elven forces
vs how he talks about Utaya with the elves, first by making them take him seriously pay proper attention to him, indirectly invoking Milsiril's social capital to present a nepo-baby persona* that paints Kabru as not-like-the-other-tallmen, why he's practically a Canary
*i said persona. if you call him a nepo baby in my notes i will send a squad of trained skunks to your house to eat your plants and spray your kitchen counters and also block you
(baffles me. BAFFLES ME that there are readers who fell for it. at least the Japanese VA did a great job of making it sound just fake enough for the audience to clock it as a successful deception check, so it should be clearer now)
Only then he appeals to their emotion, framing Utaya as being about the elves' misplaced best efforts and the losses they suffered, framing the death of imperial soldiers as equal to the brutal massacre of a large city's worth of people. That emotional appeal and successful positioning of himself as aligned with the Canaries is what allows him to ultimately propose his plan to evacuate the dungeon.
#this post has been brought to you by someone who paused the episode in minute 18 to jot down some notes for future kabruposting#and now it's been two hours#i'll add the ALT descriptions after i've had a 3pm lunch and finished the episode#kabru#kabru of utaya#dungeon meshi#dunmeshi#delicious in dungeon#the canaries (dungeon meshi)#my dm thoughts

…………. Spoiler below cut anime besties you’re gonna wanna wait a couple episodes - probably til 16
Okay so this is 100000000% related to not just Chilchuck helping them realise they were assuming she didn’t really care about anything but the money…
Because if they heard Anything At All about Namari and spoke to another dwarf Ever.
They know about her dad. How he robbed the governor and ran away, and made things harder for every dwarf on the island… and how clearly you also cannot trust Namari
(Daya, Kabru’s dwarf friend, fills that in for us after they meet the Tansus in chapter 33, current estimate puts that at anime episode 16)
These two gnomes already adopted a couple tallman kids because no one was looking out for them
It does not matter that Namari is a dwarf, another long-lived race - gnomes and dwarves both make it around 200, though gnomes can hit 240 (both Flokes are over 200)
She’s 60
That’s a baby whose parent let her down
Tansu looks ASHAMED when Chilchuck mentions he heard Namari needed money, and again when she talks about trust, not because he just misread what she wanted
They had no way to know it wasn’t just about the money; they didn’t talk about it, and she didn’t tell them that she actually chose to join them for a reason until Tansu saw her interact with people he assumed she cared about
He offered to let Namari stay and just not tell anyone it wasn’t part of their contract because he assumed she’d rather be helping Falin and her old friends; Namari told him she’d rather be helping his family, and not just because they could pay her
He always respected her as a professional but goddammit that conversation wasn’t just “by the way our workplace boundaries need to shift a bit”
That was “this kid who has been fighting to recover from what her father did to her for years just asked to be part of the family”
I don’t think Namari knows that part of it necessarily but there is NO WAY the twins taking her out to go hang out and bond right after was a coincidence
That was the line between “this dwarf will protect us for money and appropriate healing” and “this is a new possibly permanent party member” - and for the Flokes, that means “family”
And oh boy the twins know about their grandparents’ massive Batman hearts and predisposition to adopt abandoned kids
(Also why Kiki’s gotta put the moves on about those legs Right Fucking Quick she has until Tansu finishes the adoption papers to get Namari to daughter-IN-LAW status)
HOLY SHIT IMMEDIATE EDIT TO ADD (cuz you know I went to reread them chapters immediately you made me all gushy)
THIS PAGE HERE
GRANDPA TANSU STINKFACE ACTIVATE
Don’t you try and blame his newest grandkid for your problems you son of a bitch

This episode of the anime made me realize something about Namari and her relationship with Tansu and his party. Before now I haven't been able to quite pin down how and why they start treating her more like family and less like a disposable bodyguard. But the anime conveys the shift so well!!
So, at the start of the episode, Tansu pulls Namari in the way of the undine's attack to protect himself. He's perfectly happy to let her die to save himself.
Kiki and Kaka both shout for him, but no one expresses a lot of care for what happens to Namari. This isn't remarkable to any of them. They do bring her back to the camp, of course, and Tansu resurrects her... at which point she starts yelling at him about how this is, in fact, a common thing.
Throughout the rest of the episode, there is a clear contrast in how the Tansu family all treats each other versus how they treat Namari. Tansu or Kiki being in danger is concerning. Namari getting hurt or killed is just part of the job. She is a meat shield, a tool they paid for and are using as part of this expedition. They take care of her, but they care about each other.
And though it's not exactly explicitly stated, Chilchuck's speech about reputation makes it clear why - they probably assume, because of her reputation, that this is how Namari views things, too.
From their perspective, Namari signed up to die a lot and get paid a lot. She is only there for the money, but acts upset when they don't treat her as a proper member of the party (and family). From their perspective, flawed as it is, she is asking for more respect than she will return.
That's not how Namari actually feels, though, and at the episode she tells Tansu as much:
And this is what changes things between them! Tansu finally sees her as more than a tool. For the first time, the party bonds with Namari as a person.
It's very fitting that this comes right after Namari realizes the value of Senshi's pot, too.
Just like the adamantine shield can be used for more than just fighting, Namari is more than just a tool and shield herself.
So they all share a meal, and things are different between them now. Tansu and his family will go on to treat Namari with more respect in the future, and they will begin to forge actual bonds. As complex as the layers of distrust, reputation, depersonalization and assumption are... In many ways it's as simple as that. How very like Dungeon Meshi. I'm so glad the anime made this finally click for me.
