Grace - Chapter 9: Fighting Commandos
Pairing: Howard Stark x F!Reader , Bucky x Reader [Eventually]
Word Count: 3430
Series Summary: A young nurse is recruited by Dr. Abraham Erskine to join the SSR to assist on Project Rebirth. Following her work with the SSR she is drafted into the US Army Nurse Corps in the war against the Nazis…and HYDRA.

Author’s Note: This chapter is a hot mess. I rewrote it like 5 times and I'm still not really happy with it but I might just be over critical of it? Either way it's here now! Ps. Can you find the tiktok memes?

Howard and Peggy joined the flight over to the base in Europe. Howard was the one to pilot the plane. His head would turn and his eyes would lock on the nurse he was once again going to see leave with the possibility of never returning. He would always look away when Peggy caught him looking and would raise her eyebrow in question, almost as if silently taunting him to talk to her. The couple hadn’t spoken much in the last twelve hours, in fact Howard seemed to be the one avoiding her despite his wanting to talk to her. Instead he watched as the three nurses performed initial health exams on the commandos. The commandos got to learn exactly why their head medic was nicknamed ‘Amazing Grace’ after Maxine requested the nurse to sing while they did their examinations. No one noticed the two sets of eyes with different expressions watching the nurse as she sang. When the flight landed and the nurses divided amongst the group Maxine moved in step with Monty who she had become friends with during the long flight. Charlie moved between Dugan and Gabe, finding them the most interesting to be around, although Dugan might have reminded her slightly of her eldest brother. The head nurse herself stayed with Rogers and Barnes. There was nothing but a shared look between Howard and the nurse before Peggy called him away.
Rogers requested that she be a part of any planning meeting. Like the infiltration of the first base. It would only take a few days to reach it and a troop would be sent out a day later as a backup and to care for any hostages, although Rogers swore they weren’t going to need backup. The team set out only 48 hours after the moment the plane landed. Surprising enough for the nurse is how often Steve asked for her thoughts on a plan. Sure she expected him to ask Bucky, but her? She gave her honest opinion each time even if it was ‘don’t be stupid kid’.

Cold metal pressed to my face. My chest clenched tightly, a reminder of my struggle and need to breathe. The blur that seemed to cover my eyes faded in and out before revealing the smirk worn by a man in a dark military suit.
“Bereit zu reden, Weib?” His voice was sickly sweet but his eyes showed the pleasure and amusement he was getting from the interrogation. Ready to talk, wench?
I didn’t recognize the gravelly voice that came from my mouth. “Rede ich hier mit Idioten oder bist du es nur? Ich sagte nein.” I was thankful that there wasn’t a tremble in my voice as I glared at him. Am I talking to idiots here or is it just you? I said no.
The man’s lip pulled up in a sneer. He waved his hand and as if he flipped the switch himself my body tensed, back arching against the restrained hold of the chair under the influence of the burning electricity.
My body lurched up into an upright position. The soft fire crackle was the only noise, except for maybe Jim’s rhythmic snoring, that could be heard in the camp they set for the night. As my eyes swept over the sleeping bags of passed out people stopping on familiar eyes watching me from across the fire. He just slightly dips his head to the side to the spot open next to him. I looked at the two other nurses asleep on either side of where my sleeping bag was laid out. Being as silent as possible I moved over to his side.
We sat next to each other for a while just staring into the dancing flames of the fire. My eyes kept going in and out of focus much too similar to the way they blurred and cleared after a session in the chair. There was a strange almost tickling sensation in my brain. “Are you okay?” Bucky’s voice was a mere whisper and it sent images through my head.
Boot toes scrapped along the ground. Her body writhing in the grip of two men as they dragged her by her arms back to the cell. Barnes looked up as the metal door clattered open. The nurse was thrown inside like a ragdoll. Her body trembled in pain but not the kind that came from the electric chair. This was a different pain. “Are you okay?” He murmured as he crawled over towards her.
My eyes squeezed shut and I curled into his side, my head pushed against his bicep in effort to block out the images not realizing that they were mental.
The needle stabbed into the skin near her navel as she whimpered in pain. A dark blue mixture was pushed through the needle into her. Pain. Pain followed.
“Tell me please.” I spoke against his arm, the fabric muffling my already weak voice. His hand wrapped around my hand. “You are first lieutenant (Y/n) (F/n) of the US Army Nurse Corps.” His voice was soothing and it stopped the images of failed serum tests. “Thank you, soldier boy.”
“It’s alright. I get it. It was hard when I visited home. My sister got scared when I woke up from a nightmare and she was sneaking into my room.”
“What is your family like?” I turned my head so I was no longer hiding but still leaning against him. The physical touch was helping me feel grounded at the moment.
Bucky went on to talk about his family. His mom sounded like the sweetest woman I could think of and it made me miss the relationship I didn’t get to have with my own. His sisters, oh dear did they sound like a handful but the tone he used when talking about Rebecca was something else, it was gentle and I could just tell how much she meant to him. In turn I told him about my pops and brother. He went on to talk about how he met Steve and that was a hoot. The pair was definitely trouble.
We talked until the sun began to rise and the others began to wake up. I stood up patting the man’s left shoulder as a silent thank you for the early morning comfort chat. I moved to roll up my sleeping bag to put it away before pulling out the rations for everyone to eat before we continue on the road. We should reach the first base soon.
Our little caravan stopped just over two miles outside in a dense part of the woods where Maxine and Charlie would set up to handle any injuries. I followed the guys to the armory truck where I pulled a rifle out. “What do you think you are doing, Gracie?” Charlie questioned, stopping on sight of me grabbing the weapon, the box of supplies in her arms easily forgotten.
I looked over as I loaded the gun and slung the carrying strap over my shoulders. “The guys are going in together. I’m going to watch over the camp.” I explained simply getting a pat on the upper back from Pinky as he passed by me.
Charlie nods before moving on to set up the medical tent. The commandos were ready to head out within the next thirty minutes and I was right there with them. “I thought you were staying here?” Rogers asked, looking down at me.
“Oh I am. I’m just walking with you for a bit.”
I walked with the men of the commandos halfway before stopping and nodding them on. Like some worried mother hen I counted each head as they walked passed and would count them as they returned making sure I didn’t lose one of these men. I didn’t walk back to camp though. I stood there hidden in the trees looking in the direction of the Hydra base. I stayed there until the faint echoes of gunfire could be heard. I headed back to camp. My eyes kept scanning all around as if someone might try to attack at any moment.
Smoke was now visible on the horizon. My hands instinctively tightened around the gun in my possession. The sun was going down already and the commandos weren’t back yet. Maxine and Charlie had poked their heads out of the medical tents a few times to check how things were going but I merely smiled and told them that the boys haven’t returned yet.
The first noise that came near the camp was the rumble of a motorcycle. I raised the rifle and took aim in the general direction it was coming from but a shot never left the barrel as the shine of the shield gave away the rider. Behind him in a jeep was the rest of the guys. I slowly lowered my weapon as they got closer.
Steve stopped next to me with a large smile on his face. “Any trouble?” His question was expected but my attention was on counting the heads of the men climbing out of the jeep. “Nothing. On our end.”
“Any injuries?” Maxine inquired, being the first out of the tent. “Nah they didn’t even get close.” Monty grinned wrapping his arm around her in his post fight excitement.
“We should move out tonight.” Rogers told everyone still standing next to the motorcycle. He turned towards me like a child asking for candy. “Think I can keep it?” He gestures towards the bike and I snorted, unloading the rifle for storage.
“You get hurt on that thing and I’m not going to give you my angelic bedside manners.” I pointed between the man and the bike before following Dugan to put away the rifle.
Sawyer, Juniper, and Jones helped take down and pack up the medical tent. Barnes took charge of putting away the guns and making sure they were safe for travel. No more than two hours after the commandos returned we were on the road to get to the next location.

Time became a foreign concept after a while. They were due to hit their fifth Hydra base in a few days. The last one was a bit rough. Junior got hit with a bit of shrapnel and was carried back to base by Pinky and Jacques. The shrapnel itself was easy to remove. Between Maxine and Charlie they were able to do it but they had trouble stopping the blood loss. Grace stepped in singing her signature song as she stitched up his leg ignoring the camera that seemed to just be there at the moment. She was able to give him a shot of penicillin followed by a shot for the pain. Maxine took over watching him from then on.
Grace stepped out of the tent removing the gloves from her hands and tossing them into the lit fire. “He’ll be okay, Just needs some rest.” She told the group taking the seat in between Dum Dum and Bucky. Bucky held out the flask in his hand. She gave a weak smile and took a sip from it. One of the late night conversations Bucky had with the nurse was the realization that alcohol didn’t seem to have an effect on them anymore. So they did it more to appease the group and seem normal.
“Your hair is a mess Gracie.” Dugan chuckled, his eyes glazed slightly from the alcohol he had partook in that night. The nurse rolled her eyes as she passed the flask back to Barnes. Bucky slid the flask back into his pocket before nudging the nurse.
Bucky stood up from his spot and moved behind the nurse. She looks up at him with furrowed eyebrows confused about what he was doing. Buck placed his hand on her head, tipping it back forward before he carefully pulled out the pins currently in her hair.
“What ya doin’ there Barnes?” Monty called from access the fire as he watched the sergeant run his fingers through the nurse’s hair.
Bucky didn’t answer right away and focused more on the strands of hair in his hands. “Are you braiding her hair?” Sam questioned in disbelief. Grace’s eyes had drifted closed as she relaxed under the gentle movement.
“Yeah, yeah. Laugh it up.” Bucky smiled as he folded the strands of hair together. “I have little sisters and my ma would make me help them with their hair.” Charlie passes him a tie for the end of the braid. The man tied off the end before sitting back down next to the nurse. Her eyes were open again this time staring into the fire. Her body leaned over until her head rested on his shoulder, a small yawn escaping her mouth.
It wasn’t unusual for her other the other two nurses to do this but for Gracie, she only ever leaned on Bucky or Dum Dum (if the former was busy). Many hushed conversations appeared behind their backs wondering if the two were secretly lovers given the few times people have woken to find them alone together, and occasionally wrapped in each other’s arms. Yet the occasional glimpse of a ring on the nurse’s tags made it that more confusing.

The next morning the two were once again found awake together, coffees in their hands.
“God, waking up to you two is like waking up to a married couple.”Jim muttered as he reached for his own cup of joe.
His comment made the two laugh softly. “Doubtful.” Bucky mumbled into his cup.
“What? You wouldn’t want to be married to me, soldier boy?” Gracie smiled, glancing over at the others as they cleaned up their sleeping bags.
Bucky sets his cup down and leans on the crate that he was using as a table. His blue eyes locked onto the nurse sitting a few feet away on the hood of the jeep. “Sugar, if we were married I’d put poison in your coffee.”
Grace leaned forward slightly, being careful not to fall. “If I was your wife, I’d drink it.” She grinned and downed the rest of her coffee without breaking eye contact with the soldier staring at her with a boyish grin.
“Alright you two, enough let's clean up.” Rogers chuckles stepping in between them, breaking the line of sight between the two. The nurse nods and hops off the jeep to assist in packing up the camp so they can finish their short journey to their next location.
They were almost done but the closer they got to finishing the more she got an uneasy feeling in her stomach. It was probably just nerves. Maybe a bit of lack of sleep mixed in too.

Today was the day the commandos were going to infiltrate their seventh Hydra base. Maxine and Charlie had their medical tent set up. Each was entrusted with a pistol for protection since the head medic was going to be going with the commandos to the base. This base was the largest they have infiltrated since their own break out and Rogers wanted to be over prepared. So after a whole day of training the two nurses how to handle and fire the pistols the group of commandos headed out. The nurse was given a sniper rifle and was going to be positioned on the opposite side as Barnes.
Snow had begun to fall recently making it a bit cooler. The nurse was wrapped in a thick white nurse corps cape. Underneath she had put on one of Barnes’ thermal shirts, a dark gray one with her usual nurse corps uniform. Her hair was pinned up and Charlie had sprayed it with so much hair spray she doubted she could get a comb through it but at least there wouldn’t be hair flying into her face.
The group silently walked through the trees following Captain America’s silent command. Suddenly Steve stopped and turned to look back at us. His enhanced hearing was picking up on something. The shield left his grasp, spinning through the air until it connected with a tree, successfully knocking a man out of it. Everyone’s eyes moved to the man that had fallen. But it was only there for a moment before a vehicle, one of ours, was blown up.
Shots and explosions disturbed the once silent landscape. Bucky and the nurse exchanged a glance before nodding and going in opposite directions. They moved to slightly higher grounds. The nurse dropped so suddenly to the ground that she slid against the snow. Her rifle was positioned and she began to take aim at anyone that got too close to her men.
Jacques, by an alert from Jim, attached a bomb to a passing tank. The Tank got a couple yards away from where the French man stood plugging his ears with his fingers when it exploded. The team smiled as they made their way back to camp.

America released footage of Captain America and his elite group, the Howling Commandos. Black and white footage that caught Rogers planning their next move, Bucky across from him, the head nurse standing inside the jeep they used to look at the map, and Roger’s compass open showing the picture of Peggy Carter. Footage of Gracie singing to an injured Junior as she stitched him up with Maxine and Charlie there.

The eighth Hydra base. The guys came back patting Bucky on the back. Dugan pulled Barnes over to the nurse’s a large smile on his face. “This man saved the captain’s life. Shot a guy from the tree line, he did.” Dugan bragged, making the head nurse smile and look at Bucky who almost seemed to be hiding a smile, the tips of his ears pinkened.
That night was another night everyone sat around the fire drinking from flasks. Bucky and the nurse sitting next to each other with Steve on the other side of Bucky. By now most of the guys were fairly buzzed and the other two nurses were giggly under the influence of the wine that Jacques seemed to have.
“You’re a hero you know,” The nurse states, bumping her shoulder into the soldier’s arm. Buck raised an eyebrow and looked down at her. “Oh? Well I’m sure you are the prettiest girl in Brooklyn.”
“Why, thank you Sergeant Barnes.”
Bucky grins down at the nurse as she drank from the flask they had gotten used to sharing on nights like this. “What do you say, will you accompany me to Roger’s wedding one day?” He inclines his head in the direction of his best friend.
The nurse tries not to laugh as she dramatically turns her head away. “No.”
Bucky frowns, actually it almost looked like a pout. “But… but.. Sugar, I love you.” His tone was sad but Rogers and the nurse could hear the playful undertone.
She looks back at him with a dramatic gasp that caught the attention of the other commandos. She cups his cheeks. “I… love your too. I LoOoOoOve you.” She cooed wiggling his face back and forth in her hands, making Steve laugh behind him.
Barnes took the nurse’s hands into his and looked at her with wide eyes, “Marry me, sugar.” Maxine and Charlie let out giggles as they clung onto Dugan and Monty for support.
“No.” The nurse pulled her hands out of Bucky’s grasp.
“Why?” His playful whine drew laughs from a few of the commandos watching the two.
She held a hand to her heart and dramatically turned away as she replied. “I am in love with another.”
“Who is this man?” Bucky moved to kneel in front of her. His playful anger coming through in his furrowed brows.
“He. Is. You.” The nurse paused between each word for dramatic effect. She was glad that their little joke was entertainment for the others so she just kept playing along.
Barnes gasped quickly, taking a hold of her hand again looking up at her with gentle eyes, there was something so sincere in them that made the nurse’s stomach flip and flutter. “I love you! Marry me, (Y/n).”
The nurse inhaled quickly feeling her breath get caught in her breath but quickly played it off seamlessly as if it was a part of their dramatics. “No.”
The soldier dramatically dropped his shoulders as he called out her name in a fake cry. This finally broke her resolve as she began to laugh softly. “I can’t marry you when I’m engaged to Howard, you nut.”

Friendship
Hey hi hello! I'm finally back at It with another t word fic! I had so much trouble getting into the groove of this one, but regardless I had fun writing it! I think this will be the last installment In this mini series, I feel like I'm at a good stopping point. That being said, Obviously I will eventually write more for these three beans.

The Ultimate Princess scoured the island In search of The Pink haired mechanic after leaving the dining hall, Normally he was easy to find since he was always so eager to talk to her but today was different.
Walking with her was Hajime, Who had volunteered to help her find Kazuichi. “Are you sure It was a good Idea to leave Gundham sleeping In the dining hall? I feel as though we should have woken him up.” Sonia asked.
“It’s better for him to get some sleep.” Hajime responded. “Besides, It’s not like we left him alone, We left him with Chiaki.”
“I suppose you’re right but… I feel bad for not waking him up and sending him to his room.” She frowned.
Hajime smiled a bit, A knowing look on his face. “You really do worry about him a lot…”
“Of course I do, He Is my friend.” Sonia responded. “I worry about all of my friends.”
Hajime was about to open his mouth to respond but he changed gears upon catching sight of the pink haired Mechanic. “There he Is. What’s he doing?”
“It appears as though he is working on something.” Sonia said quietly, the pair silently approached Kazuichi where he sat on the ground tinkering with something.
He was humming quietly while he worked, he seemed as though he was In good spirits so that couldn’t be the reason why he was ignoring Gundham.
“Just put this here and…”
“YO!” Hajime said suddenly, stepping In front of Sonia. “KAZUICHI!”
Kazuichi screamed, launching his screwdriver into the air in surprise. He spun around In his spot on the ground and let out a breath of relief. “Oh. It’s just you. Jeez man, Don’t scare me like that! What the hell Is wrong with you!?”
Sonia stepped out from behind Hajime, her arms folded. “Kazuichi--”
Kazuichi’s face turned pink as he quickly got to his feet, throwing a tarp back over his project. “M-Miss Sonia!”
“Kazuichi,” she started, frowning. “I wish to know why you are avoiding Gundham.”
“W-What? I’m not--”
“Yeah, You are.” Hajime interrupted. “He tried to talk to you the other day and you made up an excuse and practically ran away.”
“What Is going on? You two were getting along so well at the party.” Sonia stepped closer to the mechanic. “Please, Tell me the truth.”
The pinkette frowned, looking away from his crush awkwardly. His eyes fell upon his tarp covered project as he thought about It in silence.
Kazuichi had blown Gundham off because he didn’t want to accidentally blab about the surprise he was working on for him, Soda was creating a brand new play area for The Four Devas as a peace offering, to prove to him that he wasn’t just trying to get along with him for Sonia’s sake.
He always had trouble admitting how he felt with words, usually stumbling over them or saying something stupid. He preferred gestures over words.
The truth was this... He had a lot of fun at the party, as much as he initially hated spending time with Gundham, he actually started to have fun. Kazuichi didn’t have many friends either, he’d always been picked on as a kid and didn’t have much free time due to helping his dad out with the bike shop.
That day, even If for just a little while, It felt like he had friends. And he wanted to make sure Gundham knew he was genuinely thankful for that.
But he knew he was a horrible liar and Gundham would eventually figure out what he was doing, so he was avoiding the Breeder so as not to spoil the surprise.
“I… I can’t.” Kazuichi said, realizing he hadn’t answered yet. “I-I mean, not yet anyway!”
Sonia sighed softly. “I did not want It to come to this, but I promised Gundham I would get to the bottom of this.”
Kazuichi gave a confused look in response. “What are you talking abohohout-- H-Hey!” He yelped, chuckling a bit as he jumped backwards at the sudden pokes to his midsection.
“If you will not tell me what Is going on, I will tickle you until you do.” She smiled, sending chills down the mechanic’s spine.
“Y-You wouldn’t dare...” He smiled nervously, backing away from the blonde princess.
“I would dare.” She insisted.
Kazuichi felt his fight or flight instincts kick In, and he chose the latter. He went to run away from her but he ran into Hajime, who he just now realized had been eerily silent.
“Where do you think you’re going?” He asked, smirking as he grabbed a hold of his arms. “I didn’t just tag along to help her find you, Y’know.”
“I thought you might try to run away, So I asked Hajime If he would help me just in case.”
“L-Let go! This Isn’t fair!” Soda whined, struggling in Hajime’s surprisingly strong grasp.
“Life’s not fair.” The tsundere sighed in reply, spinning him around to face Sonia and holding his arms up over his head.
“Kazuichi, Last chance. Tell me why you are avoiding Gundham or else…” She threatened, a determined glimmer in her pale blue eyes.
The pinkette shook his head, already resisting the urge to giggle anxiously. “N-No. I can’t.”
Sonia nodded, unzipping part of his yellow jumper and shoving her hands under the white shirt underneath. Her nails began gliding across his sides. “Very well then.”
Soda tried not to laugh or show any reaction, but he ended up laughing after a few seconds of holding back. “Wahahahait! M-Mihihihiss Soniahaha! Dohohohn’t!” He whined between laughs.
“I am sorry, Kazuichi. But I must get to the bottom of this.” Sonia smiled at the sound of his laughter. “Gundham Is upset and I do not wish to see my friends upset.”
Really? Gundham’s upset by Kazuichi not talking to him…? Does that mean he considers him a friend too? “I cahahahan’t tehehehell you!”
“I am sorry, but I must know.” Sonia reiterated, digging her fingers into his stomach.
He yelped and crumbled back against Hajime, laughing harder as he tugged at his arms. “Nohohohoho! Ahahahahaha!”
“Does this tickle~? I am willing to wager that It does~” She cooed, his fingers wiggling into the muscle beneath his skin.
“Sohohohonia stahahahap! Hahahahaha!” he blushed at the teasing words, he wasn’t sure what he was expecting of a Princess but It sure as hell wasn’t this.
“No~” she sang. “I’m not going to stop until I get what I want. Even If I have to tickle you for hours.”
To emphasize her point her fingers sped up as they traversed upwards, brushing teasingly against his sides and wiggling like wild spiders against his ribs.
Kazuichi screamed and threw his head back, knocking Hajime In the face as he did. “SHIHIHIHIT! NOHOHOT THEHEHEHERE!” He shrieked helplessly.
Hajime yelped In pain and readjusted his grip on the Mechanic, now holding both of his wrists in place with one hand. He used the other to tenderly rub his chin. “Jeez, Kazuichi. Watch where you’re throwing that thing.”
“YOUHUHUHU DEHEHEHESERVED IT!” Kazuichi laughed heartily, still attempting to pull his wrists free. Though thanks to Sonia’s merciless tickling he was much weaker.
Hajime huffed. “Oh yeah? Well, I think you deserve this.” He wormed his free hand into Kazi’s jumpsuit and began scribbling his nails against the back of his ribs over his white tee.
When I tell you the boy screamed.
“AAAAH! NONONONONO!” He screamed, His body jerking violently to the side, trying to shield the sensitive spot.
“Ooh, Hajime, It looks like you found a really ticklish spot~” She grinned, her fingers darting around to the back of his ribcage to join the Tsundere In torturing their friend. “What do you think Kazi? Is this a bad spot?”
“Yeah Kazi,” Hajime grinned. “Does this tiiiiiickle~?”
Kazuichi couldn’t even form sentences, he was laughing way too hard to focus on anything else. His laughter was borderline going silent from the intensity, as evidenced by his constant wheezing.
“Just tell us~” Sonia hummed, her fingers tickling the sensitive spots between the ribs now.
“You gonna tell us?” Hajime asked.
Kazuichi nodded frantically, tears streaking down his pink cheeks from laughing too hard.
Sonia and Hajime relented, though Hajime kept a grip on his wrists, evidently not trusting the pink haired boy. “Why have you been avoiding Gundham?” She asked again.
Kazuichi coughed as he gulped down air, clearly not used to being tickled. “I… Didn’t want to spoil the surprise�� for him…” He panted.
“The…” she trailed off.
“Surprise?” Hajime and Sonia exchanged confused looks. “What are you talking about?”
Kazuichi nodded his head towards the tarp covered project. “Check… For yourselves…”
Curiously, Hajime released the Mechanic and went over to the tarp. He pulled It off to reveal what Soda had been working on, A play area made out of pvc pipes, A fish tank, and a wide assortment of metal and plastic items.
“Huh?” He was confused, but Sonia recognized what It was intended to be instantly.
Her face lit up at the sight of It. “Oh my! You’re building a pen for the Four Dark Devas of Destruction!” She twirled around to face Kazuichi, who had just finished zipping his jumpsuit back up.
He chuckled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his head, blushing as he glanced away from the bright girl. “Y-Yeah. I wanted to show Gundham I really consider him a friend, So I was doing It the best way I knew how…”
“By building something for him.” Hajime finished, smiling at the dork. “That’s really thoughtful of you. I’m impressed.”
“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean?? I’m always thoughtful!” He shot back, flustered.
Sonia giggled and hugged the pink haired boy suddenly. “You’re so sweet. Gundham and I are lucky to have a friend like you.” she praised.
Just when he thought his face couldn’t get any redder… It was close to matching Mahiru’s shade of hair now. “F-Friend?” He stuttered, asking for confirmation If what he heard was what she just said.
“Of course! We’re friends.” She beamed up at the embarrassed tinkerer.
He smiled warmly back at her and hugged her back. “Thank you.” he whispered almost silently, not even sure If she had heard him or not.
But she did.
After another minute or so they both pulled back. “I should get back to work on this. I don’t wanna make Gundham upset by not talking to him.” Soda announced nonchalantly, sitting down in front of the project again.
“Would you like some help? I am not very mechanically inclined, but I can be taught.” Sonia volunteered, sitting down next to him.
“Sure! I would love some help!” He smiled at the blonde.
“Is there anything I can do?” Hajime asked.
“Can you go check on Gundham? I am worried about him.”
“Sonia, We’ve been over this. We left him with Chiaki at the hotel, I’m sure he’s doing fine.”
“You left him with Chiaki?” Kazuichi repeated, looking at Hajime for confirmation.
“Yeah… What, Why are you looking at me like that--”
“In the hotel, Where there’s video games?”
Hajime stared blankly at him for a minute before cursing and running off towards the hotel.
Apparently reaching the same conclusion Kazuichi had, That Chiaki would most likely be sidetracked by the video games and not check on the Breeder.
He burst through the doors but didn’t see Chiaki anywhere near the video games units. He did, however, hear Gundham scream from upstairs. “Gundham??” He called out, confused.
Hajime bolted up the stairs into the dining room, and froze at the sight before him. Gundham was on the floor, trying to curl up Into a ball, and Chiaki was on top of him, tickling the life out of the Dark Prince.
“Uhhh, Chiaki? What are you doing?” Hajime asked, leaning against the doorway.
Chiaki looked up at him and offered a smile. “Oh, Hey Hajime. I’m tickling Gundham.” She responded bluntly.
“GEHEHEHET THIHIS FIHIHIHIHIEND OFF OF MEHEHE!” Gundham laughed helplessly.
“I can see that.” Hajime laughed, Ignoring Gundham’s plea. “The question Is, Why?”
“I promised I would keep an eye on him, But that got too boring. So I’m entertaining myself.” She answered, skittering her fingers across his neck.
There was something about the thought of being on the receiving end of Chiaki’s tickles that scared Hajime, It could be how merciless she was being, Or maybe how nonchalant she was, Or both.
Gundham squealed uncharacteristically and covered his face. “STAHAHAHAHAP! I AHAHAHAM AWAHAHAHAHAKE NOW! I DOHOHOHN’T NEEHEHEED WAHAHATCHED!”
Hajime smirked, approaching the two. He sat down next to Chiaki. “I dunno, I think you still need supervision.” he said playfully.
“I agree.” Chiaki smiled mischievously.
“NOHOHOHOHOHO! I DOHOHOHOHON’T!”
“I think another hour should do it, Don’t you, Chiaki?” Hajime asked, winking at the pink haired girl.
She giggled. “I think so too. That way we can make sure he’s going to stay awake.”
“AHAHAHAN HOUR?!? SUHUHUHURELY YOU JEST!” Gundham whimpered at the thought, considering adding Chiaki Nanami to the small list of people he finds intimidating.
“No, I’m quite serious.” She replied with a determined glimmer in her eyes. Her fingertips lightly dancing across his neck and collarbone.
“I think she means It, Gundham.” Hajime chuckled, unable to resist the urge to help her any longer. He began teasingly poking at random exposed spots on his midsection. “And who am I to stop her? I think I should help her If anything.”
“I WIHIHIHILL DEHEHEHEHESTROY YOU BOHOHOHOTH!” Gundham threw out an empty threat.
“It doesn’t scare me when Fuyu threatens me, And It doesn’t scare me when you threaten me.” Hajime snickered.
“Oh, I don’t scare you huh?” Hiko’s voice was suddenly right at Hajime’s ear. “You sure about that?”
Hajime yelped in surprise, whipping around to look at his friend. “F-Fuyu! Jeez! Don’t scare me like that.” Hajime sighed, holding his chest to steady his rapid heartbeat.
Fuyuhiko grinned triumphantly. “What are you two dipshits doing, Anyway?”
“Tickling Gundham.” Chiaki answered.
“O...kay. Well you think maybe you should… I dunno… Let him breathe?” Fuyu asked, having noticed how much the Breeder was gasping.
Chiaki paused what she was doing, allowing the dark prince to breathe. “Oh… Right. Air, He needs that.”
“Hey Fuyu.” Hajime motioned for the Yakuza to come closer, he hesitantly did so. He whispered something to the small blond so Gundham couldn’t hear.
Hiko rolled his eyes, making a show of huffing as he threw his hands up. “I GUESS.” Although he had a smile on his face as he did so, negating the annoyed response he was going for. He sauntered off, leaving Gundham at the mercy of Hajime and Chiaki once more.
Fuyuhiko made It to the area where Sonia and Kazuichi were, curiously peering over their heads at the project they were working on. “Uh, What are you two doing?”
Kazuichi yelped in surprise, nearly throwing his screwdriver for a second time.
Sonia giggled and turned to look at the Yakuza. “Hello, Fuyuhiko! Kazuichi Is building a play pen for the Devas and I am helping.”
Ahh, now It makes sense why Hajime and Chiaki were wrecking poor Gundham… They were trying to keep him from finding out what was going on. “Ah, Gotcha. Uh, Hajime sent me to tell you both that Gundham Is awake but uh… He’s being distracted by him and Chiaki.”
Sonia and Kazi exchanged confused looks. “What are those two doing to him?”
“I walked In on them…” Hiko paused, blushing. Fuck, of all times to be unable to say that word why did it have to be right now?! “U-Um. They were sort of destroying him.”
“D-Destroying!?” Sonia asked, alarmed.
“N-Not literally!” Hiko quickly corrected. “They’re uh…”
“Ohhh… I get It.” Kazuichi laughed. “I think what Fuyuhiko Is trying to say Is that they’re tickling him. Right?”
“Yeah, That.” he nodded, still blushing.
“Oh. Why didn’t you just say that? You scared me for a minute there. Not that I believe they would hurt him, But still…”
“Uh… Well… I…”
“Some people have trouble saying the word ‘tickle’.” Kazuichi explained casually, tightening a bolt on the play area. “Usually people who are super ticklish themselves.”
The pinkette grinned as he winked at Fuyu, who seemed to turn pinker at that. Though he would vehemently deny such a thing.
“H-Hey! I am NOT! I just… Think the word Is stupid and childish!” Fuyuhiko pouted, crossing his arms childishly.
“It Is okay, Fuyuhiko. I understand.” She smiled sympathetically. “Though I am not nearly as ticklish as Kazuichi or Gundham, I see how It would be difficult for one to say.”
“Hey! Whose side are you on??” Kazuichi blushed, nudging her side.
She giggled and recoiled.
“So…” Fuyuhiko cleared his throat, trying desperately to change the subject. “How much longer until you two are done? I’m not sure how much longer Gundham will last.”
“Actually,” Kazuichi tightened another screw, then set his screwdriver down. He looked It over one last time then smiled. “It’s done.”
“It looks wonderful, Kazuichi! You did great!” She beamed, standing up and dusting her dress off.
“Thanks…” He chuckled sheepishly, standing up too. “Hey Hiko, Can you help me carry this?”
Fuyuhiko looked at it, skeptical. “I’ll try, but If you drop It on me, I will kill you.” he threatened.
The two lifted it up and began carrying It towards the hotel. It wasn’t as heavy as Kazi expected It to be, much to the relief of the petite Yakuza.
They brought It up Into the diner and quickly covered It with a tarp, luckily Gundham hadn’t noticed them thanks to Hajime and Chiaki both smothering him with tickles.
Hajime looked up and saw the three students, smiling he withdrew his hands and motioned for Chiaki to do the same.
Though she relented much more halfheartedly, pouting as she pulled back.
Sonia and Kazuichi both approached the recovering Supreme overlord of Ice and sat down on either side of him. “Gundham, I found Kazuichi and made him explain to me why he was avoiding you.” Sonia explained, helping him sit up.
He tiredly looked at Sonia, then over at Kazuichi who was trying not to laugh at how disheveled he looked. “I-Is that so? Then why…?”
“Uh, Listen man…” Kazuichi started, reaching over and fixing Gundham’s hair. “I wasn’t avoiding you because I didn’t want to talk to you. I just didn’t want to spoil my surprise for you.”
Gundham tilted his head in confusion. “Surprise…?”
“Yeah. I wanted to show you that I really consider you a friend, And that I’m thankful to consider you a friend so I… was doing It the only way I know how.” Soda blushed, looking over at Hiko and Hajime as if to cue them.
They pulled the tarp off, revealing the playpen for the hamsters. Chiaki, wanting to be included, motioned to It like she was on a gameshow showing off a prize. This drew a laugh from Hajime and Fuyu.
Gundham’s expression softened, his face turning red. “Y-You… built that? F-For… Me?”
“Yeah. I’m not so great with words, But I am great with building things.” Kazuichi smiled. “Do you like It??”
Gundham bit his lip, he went to pull his scarf over his face to hide his blush but quickly realized his scarf was still chilling on the table from earlier. “Y-Yes…” Gundham turned to Kazuichi, smiling a little at the way his eyes sparkled with happiness. “Thank you, Friend.”
Kazuichi squealed happily and pulled him Into a hug without giving it a second thought.
Gundham flinched, but eventually returned the hug. Sonia smiled at her two dorks, happy they were getting along. She got up and retrieved the Devas from the table, putting Gundham’s scarf on again.
“Fiends! We must seek not the approval of the Dark Prince, But the Four Dark Devas of Destruction and Tickles!” Sonia mimicked Gundham again.
“The… what?” Kazuichi asked, totally confused as he pulled back.
“She renamed them.” Gundham explained. “But she Is right. Their opinion is what truly matters.”
Sonia set them down In the fish tank, And they began happily scurrying around through the different pipes and segments. They seemed to enjoy It.
Gundham smiled as he watched his pets having fun. “They like It.” He confirmed to his friends.
Though their friendship may not be typical, and It may be confusing at times. I have a feeling that this friendship will be one that’ll last. And Who knows? Maybe down the road, It’ll turn Into something more…?

SCOTT #3420 Joseph W. Stilwell
Honored on the first Distinguished Americans series stamp is General Joseph W. Stilwell (1883-1946). A 1904 graduate of the United States Military Academy, Stilwell was sent to Burma in 1942 to assist Chinese and British troops who were defending Burma against Japanese aggression. He commanded all American forces in the China-Burma-India theater of operations during World War II. Stilwell, whose outspoken nature earned him the nickname “Vinegar Joe,” served as Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek’s chief of staff and was the first American general to command a Chinese army.
SCOTT #3422 Wilma Rudolph
Wilma Rudolph (1940-94) was an African-American born with polio. Vigorous therapy enabled her to overcome the crippling effect of the disease. She went on to become a high school and college athlete in track and field. In 1960, Rudolph became the first American woman to win three Olympic gold medals.

An American politician for over 60 years, Claude Pepper (1900-1989) was a champion of causes important to the elderly. A graduate of the University of Alabama and Harvard University Law School, Pepper was elected to the Florida legislature in 1929. He sponsored a bill allowing senior citizens to fish without a license. As a Democratic Senator, Pepper supported Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. In 1962, he became a member of the House of Representatives, where he served until 1989. Pepper led a 1986 action that ended mandatory retirement in the federal government. He received the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s top civilian award, five days before his death.
SCOTT #3427 Margaret Chase Smith
Margaret Chase Smith (1897-1995) was one of the most successful politicians in Maine’s history. Smith was the first woman to be elected to both the U.S. House and Senate, and the first woman from her state to serve in either. A member of the Republican Party, Smith became the first woman to have her name entered into the nomination process for the U.S. Presidency at a major party’s national convention. (Smith lost to Barry Goldwater at the 1964 convention.) At the time she left office, Smith was the longest-serving female senator in U.S. history. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush bestowed the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon Smith.

James Michener (1907-1997) was a bestselling author of more than 40 books, publishing until the year of his death. While serving in the Pacific, he wrote his first book, “Tales of the South Pacific,” which won a Pulitzer Prize in 1948. James Michener served on the U.S. Postal Service Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee.

As a research scientist at the University of Michigan in the 1940s, Dr. Jonas Salk (1914-95) helped develop the first effective influenza vaccine, still the basis of the flu vaccinations given today. Another disease, paralytic poliomyelitis, or polio, had paralyzed or killed thousands of Americans each year for decades. In 1955, Salk developed an injectable, killed-virus vaccine that was the first safe and effective vaccine against polio. For his work, Salk was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977.

Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-96) was an abolitionist and author. Stowe’s most famous novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, was published in 1852. The novel depicted live for African-American slaves, energizing the anti-slavery movement in the North and provoking anger in the south. Stowe wrote more than 20 books, many dealing with social issues.

Thrust into public service in 1931 by the sudden death of her husband, Senator Thaddeus H. Caraway, Hattie Caraway (1878-1950) was appointed to fill her husband’s seat in the Senate. In 1932, a special election confirming her appointment made her the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate. Caraway was a strong supporter of the New Deal, veterans, and organized labor. She was known for her dry wit and quiet dignity. The stamp honoring Caraway is the first in this series to be issued as a self-adhesive.

Edward Trudeau (1848-1915) was a pioneer in the research and treatment of tuberculosis.

Lasker campaigned for greater cooperation between scientists and the medical community as well as for government funds to finance research.
