Houghton Hall, Norfolk: Bob’s palazzo

The hall was built as a residence for Walpole, Britain's first prime minister.  How a mere politician – and a commoner at that - could afford such splendour is no mystery, given the corruption of the early 1700s.

Building a country house in his native Norfolk had several advantages for Robert Walpole.  He could impress people with displays of his wealth and power.  And he could keep his wife there while conducting the affairs of the state - as well as more private ones - in London.

The Walpoles had been country squires in this north-west corner of East Anglia for a long time.  In 1721, after become prime minister, Robert came up with a plan to turn the family manor into a grand home in the Italian style.

The estate manager looked at the drawings and saw a problem: there was a village where Bob's palazzo would stand.

Walpole shrugged: "I'll just move those cottages there."  He pointed to a spot two miles from their present location.

"You can't do that," the manager said. "I'm the most powerful man in the land now.  I can do as I bloody well please."’ "How do you suppose the villagers would feel about it?" "I should think they'll be delighted," Walpole said. "Why?" "Have you ever heard the phrase Build Back Better?" "No." "Are you suggesting I invented it?" "Yes." "Thank you."

So the palace was built, the village was moved and to this day all the deer in the park are white.

Walpole's descendants still live in Houghton Hall. You can visit part of the grounds but the State Rooms have been closed since the start of the pandemic. I suppose one can understand the desire of the current marquess to keep the Great Unwashed at a distance.  I wouldn't want the paying public to breathe all over my flat either.  Still, it's a bit of a shame.

You can visit the walled garden though.  I didn't see the point of paying £10 a ticket to look at some shrubbery, but the prospect appealed to my wife.   We had travelled all the way from London so we went.

Now I don't like gardens.  You say the word Capability and I stop listening.  In fact we moved from a semi-detached to an apartment specifically to escape burgeoning vegetation.

But I have to admit that the walled garden at Houghton Hall is something else.

Some bits reminded me of the Jardins du Luxembourg back home.  Then I turned a corner and I was in Versailles.  I found even the flowers magnificent.  I impressed my wife by correctly identifying hydrangeas (it was a guess, but it may have been an educatedly Freudian one.)

The centrepiece of the place – the bit that has everyone go "Wow!" - was a flame fountain.

Walpole had a knack for the wow-factor.  I wanted to read about him so went to gift shop and paid another £10 for a booklet on him.

Nothing, I found out, predestined Robert for grand things: he was short, fat, unkempt, and a third son.  In the early 1690s, he was sent to Cambridge to prepare for a life of ecclesiastical obscurity.

His father, a colonel also called Robert, mainly saw him as source of cash: in 1700 Bob the elder arranged a marriage with the daughter of a rich merchant and pocketed the dowry to settle his gambling debts.

But then young Walpole's luck turned.  His two elder brother AND the colonel died in quick succession.  At the age of 24 he inherited not just the Houghton estate but a parliamentary sinecure that went with it. He never looked back.

A gifted orator, a tireless worker and a master at sharp parliamentary practices, he became the key man in the Commons and took over the Whig faction.  He got the top job in 1720 and kept it for 20 years, a longevity record for UK prime ministers he still holds.

Incidentally, the booklet said, he did not like to be called "prime minister".  He was the chancellor.  But as this was the most senior cabinet position at the time, wags gave it the ridiculously grand title of "prime minister".  In time a term of derision became an official title.

Walpole knew exactly whom to bully, whom to flatter and whom to bribe.  He grew very rich as a result.  Like other successful PMs down the ages, Walpole was duly hated by the best writers of his time.  He inspired Swift, Fielding and Gay to peaks of satirical literature.

Our visit to Houghton Hall helped me refine my views on British history.

Continentals of a liberal bent like me tend to see the Glorious Revolution as a cut-off point. Before 1688 it's all mayhem, misery, civil war, bloodthirsty kings and martyred archbishops; after 1688 we have the parliamentary system, clean successions, tolerance, the Industrial Revolution, the sheltering of immigrants, resistance to tyranny and the invention of the World Wide Web.

In short 1688 begat John Locke, who begat David Hume, Adam Smith, and every Great Briton from Jane Austen to Brunel, Dickens, Lewis Carroll, John Cleese, David Gilmour and Emma Raducanu.

I now realise that my "It's the Glorious Revolution, stupid" view was a tad simplistic.  The transition from absolute rule to representative democracy and the Enlightenment was a messy one.  Real change is always gradual.  Given my nationality and liberal bent, I should have realised that abrupt revolutions don't work.

It took someone who was steeped in the old, venal ways to stabilise a fragile parliamentary order.  That person was Walpole.  He deserved his palace.  I'm not sure about his current descendants though: I hope they reopen the State Rooms soon and stop culling deer that happen to be the wrong colour.

Day 38: April 19, 2018

We woke up fairly early, had some fruit (we planned to have breakfast in Venice) and hopped in the car. On the drive to Venice we avoided the toll roads which took us an extra hour on the two hour drive. When you exit Slovenia the landscape changes significantly. The mountains drop off into flat land.

We drove across the bridge to Venice and there was a very strong fish smell. Not a very pleasant first experience. We found Garage San Marco where we had decided to park for the day. The cost was 32 euros. We had looked into parking at the airport, but we would have had to take the bus and then it would have been more expensive. We worried about figuring out where the other parking lots were on the mainland and then having to take a bus or train from there so we were okay with paying.

We got into the car park quite quickly though I had read that during the summer sometimes there are lines of cars across the bridge waiting to get in. The odd thing about the parking lot was that you had to leave the keys in the car with the doors unlocked. Sometimes a car is parked in front of you and they need to move it to let you out so the keys have to stay. There are attendants on every level.

We exited the car park and walked towards the centre. There are approximately 400 bridges in Venice and thankfully Danny only stopped at the first twenty to take pictures.

We stopped at a patisserie and I had a cream puff filled with chocolate mousse. I could have eaten about five of them. Danny had a very big piece of cake. We walked some more and had a spinach and ricotta calzone. From there we went over the Grand Canal on the Rialto Bridge. There were already a ton of people taking pictures.

Our next stop was Acqua Alta Library. It is a book store with books in shelves, bath tubs and gondolas. There were also lots of cats. We climbed a staircase made of encyclopedias at the back for a view of the canal then visited a black cat for awhile.

We walked out of the narrow streets to see the waterfront and it was boiling hot there. Danny was feeling crappy: maybe the sun or the sugary breakfast. We stopped at a restaurant on the waterfront. Danny had lasagna and I had black cuttlefish spaghetti. Venice is known for their black spaghetti which uses squid ink for the sauce. It actually wasn’t too bad although I think the restaurant in general wasn’t the best. Danny’s lasagna was sub par.

We walked on and saw the Bridge of Sighs. It is named after the many prisoners that sighed going over it as it was their last view of Venice. It was built in 1600 and connects the prison to the interrogation rooms of the Doge’s Palace.

We walked on further and found the Doge’s Palace. It was the residence of the Doge of Venice in the former Republic of Venice. Doges were elected for life by the aristocracy. The Republic of Venice existed from 697-1797.

We went around the corner to San Marco square which houses Basilica San Marco and Campanile di San Marco. The body of San Marco is believed to have been taken from Alexandria and brought to Venice in 828. The Basilica is dedicated to him.

We walked around a bit more then got some gelato. It also wasn’t too amazing. My food experiences in Rome were so fantastic that I had high expectations for Venice.

Another item on our list to see was the place where the shoot out at the end of Casino Royale was filmed. We walked back over Rialto Bridge and went down a back alley to a dead end. We had previously gone down the same back alley earlier in the day.

We decided to walk to the other side of the Grand Canal to see the building from that side. We walked passed the university and crossed a different bridge that was under construction. We went to the San Angelo ferry stop and looked across at Palazzo Pisani where the shoot out was filmed. I’m not sure it was worth all the walking.

We had to sit down for a bit after that. I think I wore Danny out a bit with all the walking. I was really loving storming around the narrow streets, finding the little bridges to cross and navigating to a destination. Danny gets tired of cities easily.

We went back to Calle de San Luca where the walking tour we booked started. We received headsets in order to hear the guide during the walk. She took us in a loop around the area. During the high tide the water rises approximately one meter at Piazza San Marco. It floods there first and then Rialto near the bridge. Metal doors protect the buildings and raised platforms are used on the sidewalks. To construct the buildings they blocked off the water to keep it on one side then put in wood with a slab on top. The tour was about an hour and a half then we were taken on a 30 minute gondola ride.. We got the love seat in the gondola and very much enjoyed the short loop. It was just enough to say we experienced the gondola.

We climbed out of the gondola and headed towards the car looking for supper. We grabbed a slice of pizza at a quick place, but it wasn’t the atmosphere I was hoping for; it was loud and rushed. We went up the path and found a restaurant. We sat down and I had Prosecco with pizza. It was yummy.

From there, we walked back to the car. It would have been nice to see the city at night. We loved Venice. It was gorgeous to walk around. Danny couldn’t stop taking pictures. We were worried it would be too busy, but it was easy to take a side street with a few to no people on it. We explored mainly the District of San Marco and would have liked to venture further. We drove back to Slovenia taking the toll roads to get back quicker. Overall the day was quite pricey, but definitely worth it.
