live outside the box
Name: Samarah Age: 24 Gender: Cis Female Sexuality: Queer/Bisexual Location: Petersham Occupation: Teacher
I’m currently living in inner western Sydney, but I grew up in Rural New South Wales, and moved to Sydney to study when I was nineteen. I didnt realise that I was queer until I moved to Sydney because I didnt know anyone queer while growing up, and the representation I did have wasn’t particularly diverse, and was fairly gay male orientated.
I initially came out as Bisexual, but I find it more comfortable to identify to other LGBT people as Queer because I think that I’ve come to understand my sexuality in a different way since coming out, though I do still feel quite strong ties to that identity. Bisexual as a term is more accessible to people outside of the community, so it makes that an easier identifier for parents and such.
For me, to be “Queer” is to live outside of the box that society wants to put people in. Having the confidence in yourself to see the box and be able to live outside of it instead of doing everything possible to fit in it. Queer as a term also encompasses the whole diversity of gender and sexuality, rather than being very focussed on one aspect of the community.
I moved to Sydney in 2015, and despite having a boyfriend, my best friend would take me out to clubs, where I would find myself just staring at women. Towards the end of the year I began to think “oh I think there might be something more to this” - and as I’ve grown to understand myself more as a queer person I realised that I’d been staring at girls in that way my whole life and just hadn’t had the means to understand myself. Looking back, I also had very intense crushes on girls while growing up, but just assumed that they were very jealous friendships. Like I would get really upset when they would get a boyfriend, and not understand why I wasn’t happy for them.
For a while, because it took me so long to realise I was Queer, I also felt that it wasn’t valid for me to be a part of the community, specifically because it took me so long to realise it. I felt that I needed to exaggerate my queerness in order to feel like I belonged, like making up for lost time. But now I dont feel the pressure to play up my Queer identity, but I’m still going to continue to be annoyingly gay because why not?
I’ve always liked dressing up – growing up doing ballet, I’ve always been in costumes, and I still go all out at costume parties. I kind of realised in the last few years that I could dull down that instinct, and then make every day a low key dress up day. I’ve been raiding my grandmother’s closet for old vintage things that she no longer wears, and have been going thrift shopping with her and my granddad, which has made me realise how much I like finding older clothes and being able to put them into new outfits. I’m definitely going through a coat phase, and I love it so much.
The more I’ve grown into my queerness, the more I’ve felt comfortable curating my wardrobe to better suit an expression of myself that feels authentic. Branching out into not just buying clothes and accessories from the womens section of big retailers, but saying to hell with gender, and mixing and matching to make it all my own is very liberating.
Anyone who sees a straight white man on tv doesn’t automatically assume that all straight white men are like that one character, because straight white men are so heavily represented in media. But you get one Queer person on the screen, and suddenly because there is so little representation for whatever identity is held by that Queer character, people who dont tend to interact with the LGBTQIA+ community will assume that this one representation of a Queer character is representative of the entire community. The reason that portraying Queer people as villains in media is dangerous for the Queer community is specifically because that lack of representation makes the “evil because Queer” character stand out.
Historically a lot of representation in media has been distilling complex Queer identities to be digestible and understandable for straight people. Boiling such a diverse range of identities down to “the gay best friend” or “the horny bisexual” or “militant no-fun lesbian” which is useful for a television format, but is ultimately reductive of these identities, and instead of providing representation, they’re providing caricatures.
I make it a big priority to go to Queer organised events, primarily because events that are marked as Queer run and Queer organised always feel much safer. And it’s a place that I can go with my girlfriend and feel comfortable showing affection without feeling unwelcome or objectified.

Meet 14 of Australia’s Most Exciting Textile Designers
Meet 14 of Australia’s Most Exciting Textile Designers
TDF Design Awards

Badaam, The Meeting Place
The Meeting Place collection by Badaam encourages cultural exchanges by experimenting with drape, silhouette and patterns found in the Asia-Pacific region. The symbol and line prints represent ancient knowledge systems passed down through carvings on rock or ground, while the rawness and colour of handwoven silk reflect the earth these symbols were first drawn.
The collection hopes to remind people of the sacred role of creation, and that each shared story contributes to the diversity and cultural understanding of the environment they inhabit.
Amber Days, Wanala Collection
Founded by Yorta Yorta and Boonwurrung woman Corina Muir, Amber Days is an apparel label inspired by the Australia bush, desert and sea. In Wanala, the Aboriginal-owned, female-led label collaborated with Aboriginal artist Arkie Beaton on a playful print depicting floral energy in bright bursts of colour.
Since launching in October 2018, Amber Days has released five collaborations with female First Nations artists. With each new collection comes a new opportunity to strengthen awareness of Aboriginal culture, stories, and the importance of caring for the country.

Instyle Interior Finishes, Native
Native is a beautiful commercial upholstery fabric designed by Carol Debono from Instyle’s in-house textile design studio.
The inspiration for Native was driven by colour and a desire to create a pared-back textile with a
timeless and versatile appearance at an accessible price point. Working closely with Instyle’s longstanding Australian manufacturing partner, Carol utilised existing yarn qualities made from high-quality Australian wool to translate these into a new fabric design. By using quality raw materials and the simplest of constructions (a plain weave) the resultant Native textile is understated, price-competitive, heavy duty and highly versatile, complementing a vast range of furniture types and shapes.
Nobody Denim and GEORGE, Woven Bag
The objective of this textile project was to reduce Nobody Denim’s footprint and reimagine commercial textile waste. Cut offs otherwise destined for landfill were gathered from the denim label’s cutting room floor, and rerouted into the hands of weaver and designer, Georgina Whigham for her label, GEORGE.
Prioritising a slow approach to manufacture, each bag is meticulously handmade by Georgina using her traditional four shaft floor loom. Completely left to chance, the colour palette of each piece is determined by what denim fabrication has recently been cut at Nobody’s factory. The process takes several hours to complete via the laborious process of cutting, weaving and sewing.

Curio Practice, Australian Woollen Blankets
Curio is a practice in slow craftsmanship and responsible knitting, partnering with ethical local factories and using consciously selected Australian merino wool yarns to create heirloom-quality blankets for the everyday.
The label’s blankets are made using around 1.9kg of high-grade Australian merino wool sourced from farms across Victoria, New South Wales, and Western Australia. On average, each blanket takes two hours to knit in ethical Melbourne knitting factories, and are then linked, washed and pressed.
Takeawei, Glaze Test Woollen Blanket
Ceramicist Chela Edmunds of Takeawei collaborated with Geelong Textiles Australia to create a colourful blanket that simulates the process of glazing of clay bodies in the weft of the weave. Unlike symmetrical checks that rely on mirrored elements, the check design is irregular and features large sections of block colour, tonal stripes and small pixelated colour transitions to show the breadth of variation that can be achieved. Edges are naturally frayed from the weaving and milling process.
The woollen blankets are made from 90% Australian wool and 10% nylon for durability, wash and wear.

Pampa, Eclipse
Working with their partner weavers in Argentina’s Andean mountains, Pampa produced a collection of rug designs inspired by the moon and sun. These celestial bodies are re-cast as universal symbols of warmth, vitality and comfort during a year of instability and uncertainty.
Taking its cues from Bauhaus, Eclipse is an exercise in colour play and architectural form. The result is a series of textiles that are bold, bright and expressive. Handwoven in luxuriously soft sheep’s wool, each piece takes many hours to weave and is entirely unique in its craftsmanship.
Tara Whalley, New York Fashion Week Collection
Created specifically to show at New York Fashion Week in 2020, Tara Whalley’s uplifting fashion collection was inspired by bright and joyful flowers, from those spotted on strolls through her Melbourne neighbourhood to the striking blooms Tara admired in Japanese markets on her honeymoon. These references were channelled that into a bold collection that includes apron dresses, boiler suits, kimonos, loose-fit pants, silk scarves and eye-catching ball gowns.
The 28-piece collection as always features Tara’s whimsical, hand-painted artwork – a mix of pencil and gouache, translated into digital prints. Each piece is designed to be trans seasonal and inclusive.

Caro Pattle, Woven Vase & Cup
Using machine-made textile remnants sourced from a neighbouring dead stock merchant and her own wardrobe, Caro Pattle reproduced contemporary domestic objects including a vase and cup in handwoven form.
Woven Vase & Cup are the result of an iterative research and development phase that focused on creating the perfect balance between process and material. The vessels are a collaboration between industrial and hand-crafted techniques, combining industrially produced fabric with the ancient technology of coil basketry. Woven from a single cotton/elastane textile remnant, the objects pay homage to the unique properties of the gauzy fabric. In restricting the material palette, Woven Vase & Cup offers a moment of aesthetic appreciation for an undervalued resource.
Oat Studio, Capital Collection
Textile label Oat Studio’s Capital Collection integrates iconic architectural shapes and lines into a printed fabric design. Inspired by Australian modernism, the collection expresses a love for these bold architectural forms, and expresses them through the contrasting soft tones and textures of natural fabrics.
All Oat Studio fabrics are printed-to-order to eliminate waste. The studio uses water based inks and recycled paper by-products, and works with printers who have achieved a Sustainable Green Print Accreditation.

Kuwaii, ‘Chronicle’ For Spring/Summer ’20
Melbourne fashion label Kuwaii reimagined the colourful painted pieces of local painter Charlotte Alldis onto silhouettes in their summer 2020 clothing and footwear collection, Chronicle.
The range was inspired by story telling, and fully made up of archival Kuwaii styles spanning our 10 years of business. Designed to be worn over and over, Kuwaii imagined pieces to be like ‘walking artworks’ – pieces customers would keep and would remember forever. Pieces were constructed in Melbourne on a selection of natural fibre based cloths (linen and cotton).
GH Commercial, Oceanic Commercial Carpet Collection
Combining non-traditional graphic elements with functional comfort, the designs for the Oceanic carpet collection by GH Commercial are inspired by ocean ecosystems in the Great Barrier Reef and the Tasman and Coral seas.
The objective of the carpet collection was to enhance user experience through striking patterns and biophilic design elements, but also providing exceptional comfort underfoot and reduced noise reduction in busy commercial spaces, providing a more pleasant indoor environment. The cohesive collection features three different carpet mediums to provide an extensive array of patterns that work as standalone solutions or grouped together.

Ikuntji Artists + Publisher Textiles, Clothing Collection
Aboriginal art centre Ikuntji Artists partnered with Publisher Textiles to release a collaborative collection of 100% Australian designed and made clothing. Prints were created by both established and emerging artists in order to show the breadth of Ikuntji designs, provide a diversity of prints for different markets, and provide income to artists. Each piece was crafted by Publisher and the fabric screen printed by hand.
Artists drew their inspiration from their personal Ngurra (country) and Tjukurrpa (Dreaming). The designs are unique to Central Australia, particularly the sand hills, waterholes, jagged mountains and sandy plains of the West MacDonnell Ranges.
Paire, The World’s Comfiest Socks
Paire socks are made from a hybrid wool-cotton fabric that combines the comfort of the former with the durability of the latter.
The Melbourne label developed their unique yarn-blend from scratch, made up of 50% Australian merino wool and 50% organic cotton. The smoother, softer, moisture-wicking and odour absorbing fabric is a true chameleon that’s warm in the cold and cool in the heat. The socks are cut at 90 degrees, hand sewn shut so there’s no irritating seam, and contain cloud cushioning for added support.

The fashion industry is the second largest contributor to pollution. Hence, the need for a more sustainable approach. But, the industry can not do it alone; it needs to be driven by the consumers. And as we are ALL consumers of fashion, we all have a responsibility. Here’s 8 easy ways to contribute positively to a more sustainable future, that doesn’t require wearing a hessian bag! 👇🏼 1. Know your personal style. When you define what your style is, you will less likely purchase items that you don’t wear. 2. Identify what suits you. This can be confronting, but it saves a lot of heartache (and money) down the track. Another trick is to find a good tailor, so that your wardrobe fits you well. 3. Perform the ‘30 wears test.’ What’s this? Before buying an item, ask yourself “will I wear this a minimum of 30 times?” If yes, get it! You’ll be surprised how many times you say no. 4. Invest in transeasonal items; pieces that can be worn over a number of seasons. E.g. good quality jackets, shoes, jeans, etc. 5. But vintage. And no, that doesn’t mean old, ragged pieces. There are many sites such as @therealreal @versitaire @1stdibs etc, that have gorgeous designer pieces for a fraction of the price. 6. Be informed. 🤓 Do some investigating as to which brands source ethical materials, manufacture ethically, AND dispose of waste correctly. 7. Look after your clothes. This seems like a no brainer, but you’d be surprised! Learn to care for your wardrobe so that your beloved pieces last longer. 8. Buy less. My motto, ‘buy quality over quantity.’ And then go back to #7! (at Balmain, New South Wales, Australia)

Ravenclaw Sweater;
In time, the sweaters took on the preferences of the innovative Salish knitters and came to be embellished with traditional designs, using the Truthful Isle technique, which employs two to a few colors which are alternated to produce particular designs.
This wave of sweater vests created internationally, made well-liked in North America initially, has also reached the South Asian, particularly Indian shores by means of their hugely widespread film stars who are worshiped and whose style is blindly followed by the plenty.

A lot of y’all know we’ve been collecting for our Midcentury Mod Bed & Breakfast (slash photography studio) build for a few years now and although it will be somewhat of a modern build in its outer shell (I asked for a Palm Springs Butterfly roof but the local council and builder say no 🙅🏼♀️), the details of the interior are going to be so extra ☝🏼😅 including the cutlery. I was soooooo stoked to score a full set of Atomic Oneida Twin Star silverware in the US. I actually sourced it on eBay of all places and after we’d already flown out of the US, but our girl @crystalnaudin who lives in Atlanta Georgia (whom is from Newcastle Australia too) was super sweet to bring them over to Australia for me on one of her visits. Thanks Crys 👋🏼 ♥️ Crys is so clever, she’s a scientist at Emory University and my god this women is changing the world of medicine. She’s a superstar ✨⭐️✨ The best part of this silverware buy too, they were a total steal at only US $34 with free postage 😲 Obviously someone didn’t know their worth. There’s enough for a 12 seater setting too which is amazing (complete with baby forks🍴) but I think I’ll only put a setting for 6 in the Retro Revival Bed & Breakfast as the dwelling will sleep 6 (or 7 at a stretch). We had another meeting on Wednesday and are signing off in the new year. I now hold in my hands the vendors of the build and in time we’ll be having a meeting with their interior designer to go through all the fun stuff, colours, tiles (I think I’ll need to go custom), the positioning of the gas fittings, extra power points etc. I’ve extended the prop and wardrobe room because who are we kidding, 3m x 2.7m is just not enough. We’ve extended the roof over the balcony, lifted the roof to its highest legal point and more. It’s all a bit exciting. Who’s coming over ☝🏼 I need your help in naming the place too but that will come later. #NewcastleAustralia #NewcastleNSW #PearlDaviesPhotography #PearlDavies #BedandBreakfast #AirBnB #myNewcastle #pinuplifestyle #50spinup #vivalasvegasrockabillyweekend #pinup #pinuphair #pinupphotography #OneidaTwinStar #oneida #atomic #atomicsilverware #midcenturymodern (at Newcastle, New South Wales) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6T6u-MpZSp/?igshid=fx757uvlhukb

What Meghan Markle is wearing for Australian tour – all her outfits
Meghan Markle has worn an array of striking outfits during her time in Australia (Picture: AP; WireImage; Rex; Getty)
They say pregnant women glow during their second trimester – and Meghan Markle is certainly living up to the old wives’ tale on the royal tour in Australia.
The Duchess of Sussex has showcased a string of stylish outfits over the course of their first week Down Under, changing from beach wear to city chic to ballgown and diamonds.
And, to the delight of royal fans, her baby bump can be seen underneath her outfits, making them all the more exciting to marvel over.
Harry and Meghan are currently on their first overseas official tour as husband and wife, taking in Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga, and Meghan has been sailing through it in a variety of stylish and plain gorgeous outfits.
Oh to be a Duchess.
In fact, it’s getting us ridiculously excited about Meghan’s maternity wardrobe.
To help us all keep track and refer back to these joyous and stylish times, we’ll be updating this post with every outfit Meghan wears during her trip to Australia. Buckle in.
DAY ONE:
Meghan wears a white Karen Gee dress at Admirality House
(Picture: Splash News)
For a visit to the official Sydney residence of the Governor-General of Australia, Peter Cosgrove, and Lady Cosgrove – and her first appearance since announcing her pregnancy – Meghan opted for a sleek white shift dress by Australian designer Karen Gee.
The dress, known as ‘The Blessed Dress’, promptly sold out and crashed the Karen Gee website. It costs AUD1,800 (£971.99)
Meghan completed her look with Stuart Weitzman nude suede pumps.

Meghan did a quick change for the afternoon reception at Admiralty House, swapping her white shift for a khaki shirt dress by Brandon Maxwell.
More: UK
Brandon Maxwell is a favourite of Meghan – she previously wore their design, a yellow shift dress, at the Commonwealth Youth Event in July.
Just like the white shift, the green khaki dress has already sold out, but we know it cost £1,728. Whew.
The Duchess accessorised the dress with Dior nude heels and jewellery previously owned by Princess Diana – a bracelet and butterfly earrings.
DAY TWO:
Meghan goes casual for a visit to Mountain View Farm in Dubbo
(Picture: Splash News)
For a rainy visit to the Mountain View Farm in Dubbo, the Duchess of Sussex kept things casual in a shirt, blazer, and jeans.
The blazer is the creation of Meghan’s pal Serena Williams, from the tennis champion’s Boss collection. It features a red and blue check, has an oversized fit, and costs $145 (£110). Naturally it has already sold out.
If you’re keen to wear the same jeans as Meghan, you’ll need to head to Outland – she’s wearing their Harriet style in black, which cost £140.
(Picture: Tim Rooke/REX)
That crisp white shirt is the work of Maison Kitsuné. It’s still in stock through Matches for £192.
Meghan completed her outfit with J. Crew’s Sadie ankle boots, earrings by Sydney-based designer Natalie Marie, a Natalie Marie initial necklace with the letter M, and the Pascale Monvoisin Cauri necklace.
She wore her hair in an excellent ponytail.
DAY THREE:
Meghan wears a blue Dion Lee dress to visit Melbourne
(Picture: Andrew Parsons / i-Images)
Arriving in Melbourne, Meghan topped her Folded Sail navy dress by Australia designer Dion Lee (already sold out, of course) with a Martin Grant trench coat.
Her bag is £850 by Gucci, her navy shoes are Manolo Blahnik, and she’s wearing a gold cuff bracelet by Shaun Leane.
Those necklaces you can spot were a gift from some children.
(Picture: Tim Rooke/REX)
Then swaps to a Club Monaco dress and flats for a trip to the beach
(Picture: Matt Baron/REX)
Honestly, if the Duchess of Sussex had gone to the beach in Manolo Blahniks we would have suspected she’s super-human, so we’re glad she made a quick change to flats.
While Meghan kept on her trench coats, bag, and jewellery from earlier in the day, for a visit to the beach she swapped her navy dress for a £325 black shift by Club Monaco and traded in heels for the same flats she wore when she arrived in Australia; Rothy’s The Point Black Flats.
Could this mean ballet-style flats are making a comeback? We hope so.
DAY FOUR:
Meghan wears a striped Martin Grant maxi dress to Bondi Beach
(Picture: Getty Images)
Keeping with the beach theme, Meghan wore a striped maxi sundress by Martin Grant – an Australian label – for day four of the royal tour.
The dress is still available to buy and will set you back £1,080.
It’s not the first time she’s worn a Martin grant piece, opting for a trench coat from his collection on day two of the tour.
(Picture: AAP)
She wore Castañer espadrille wedges, costing £90, with the dress and kept things relatively simply with her hair in a ponytail.
Meghan looked beach-ready in her stylish outfit (Picture: Rex Features)
Then switches to a two-toned Roksanda Athena dress for a school visit
Her second look of the day, for when she and Harry visited a school was a Roksanda Athena dress in navy, costing £1,400, with a blue border.
She swapped the sandals for Stuart Weitzman The Legend Pumps in being, costing £280, and had changed her ponytail to a soft up-do.

For the third and final engagement of the day, Meghan wore her hair up for the opening ceremony of the Invictus Games at the Sydney Opera House.

She added a bespoke Dior clutch bag and Stuart Weitzman ‘Legend’ suede heels in Haze Beige, which cost £280. She had worn these the day before during her time in Sydney.

She teamed the dress – which is considered to be her take on ‘Fijan blue’ as a nod to the state – with diamond earrings and a very clear view of her baby bump.

On her feet, Meghan wore her Castañer espadrille wedges, costing £90, which she wore earlier on in the trip when they headed to Bondi Beach.

Kate Middleton and Princess Diana’s style TWIN moments: Duchess inspired by late royal
Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, may never have met Princess Diana, but she has still taken inspiration from Prince William’s late mother, at least when it comes to her wardrobe.
Kate Middleton, 35, is widely considered one of the most stylish women in the world.
And it seems she has been taking inspiration from a source close to home, as many of her fashion choices through the years are very similar to looks worn by the late Princess Diana, 36.

Diana was known to love fashion, and became famous for striking style. Kate has historically been less interested in what she wears, but as one of the most photographed women in the world, has had to make sure she always looks good for the cameras.
Here Express.co.uk takes a look at the outfits the Duchess of Cambridge has worn that bear a striking resemblance to looks also worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
Kate Middleton vs Princess Diana: Both women are famed for their style
White and gold gowns
Diana wore this strapless tulle gown to the German Embassy in London for a banquet to mark the visit or the German President, July 1986. Designed by the Emmanuels – who had also designed her wedding dress – Diana accessorised the dress with a pair of white gloves, pearl necklace and the Spencer family tiara, which has not been publicly worn since her death in 1997.

Kate wore her striking white and gold gown at an official dinner hosted by Malaysia’s Head of State Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah of Kedah on Day 3 of the Diamond Jubilee Tour of South East Asia.
She kept accessories to a minimum for the evening, wearing only simple gold drop earrings.

Engagement announcement outfits
Both ladies chose blue outfits for their engagement announcements, with Kate sporting the ring previously worn by Princess Diana.
Diana wore a royal blue skirt and jacket with a belted waist, which she paired with a white shirt featuring a tie at the neck.
Kate chose a deep navy blue Issa dress which also had a nipped in waist.

Pink dresses
Dusky pink is a favourite of Kate’s, as it suits her English rose complexion and dark hair.
The Duchess of Cambridge wore a pink dress for her arrival in Adelaide, Australia in 2014.
But Diana also liked the colour and was seen wearing it at Hurghada International Airport in Egypt before flying back to Britain at the end of her honeymoon cruise with Prince Charles.

The fashion industry is the second largest contributor to pollution. Hence, the need for a more sustainable approach. But, the industry can not do it alone; it needs to be driven by consumers.
