Freunde der Sonne, es ist mal wieder Zeit für unseren Jahresanfangskanarenurlaub und damit meine Urlaubsposts.

Bei der Weihnachtslotterie haben wir ganze 0€ gewonnen. Vielleicht hätten wir unsere Lose an der Gasolina de la Suerte kaufen sollen, der Tankstelle auf Teneriffa, an der bisher seit 11 Jahren jedes Mal das Gewinnerlos verkauft wurde.

Anyway, eigentlich sind wir schon seit einer Woche auf Gran Canaria, aber bisher gab es nicht viel nennenswertes zu berichten. Keine nervigen Leute von den britischen Inseln, stattdessen hauptsächlich skandinavische Rentner, die selbst zum Abendessen noch Kaffee trinken.

Natürlich musste ich dem Hawaiihemd-Dealer meines Vertrauens einen Besuch abstatten. Koala Bay hat nur Filialen an der spanischen Küste und auf den Inseln und beim Onlineshop würden 10€ Versandkosten anfallen. Auf Teneriffa hatten sie leider nichts in meiner Größe, hier schon.

Gestern waren wir außerdem auf dem Markt in Puerto de Mogán, aber es gab nur zigtausend Taschen und gefälschte Markenartikel.

Heute ging es dann zuerst nach Firgas im Norden von Gran Canaria.

Ich: "Yo, aber du hast bei Google Maps schon den Parkplatz als Ziel eingegeben, oder?"

Mein Vater: "Nö, wieso?"

*fährt am Parkplatz vorbei, sodass wir einige Zeit lang ohne Wendemöglichkeit durch die Berge fahren mussten*

Firgas ist vor allem wegen zwei Dingen bekannt: Das hier abgefüllte Mineralwasser und diese 1995 angelegte Promenade.

Mehrere spanische Künstler entwarfen damals für jede der 21 Gemeinden Gran Canarias eine eigene Keramikbank.

Und Keramiken für jede einzelne kanarische Insel.

Sonderlich viel gibt es sonst nicht zu sehen, außer eine alte Mühle und eine Kirche, bei der man sich anscheinend dachte "Cyrille, da sind nicht genug Jesus-Skulpturen!"

Das ist nur eine davon.

Dann ging es nach Arucas, auch vor allem bekannt für zwei Dinge: 1. Die Rumfabrik 2. Die Altstadt mit der Kirche

Die Kirche San Juan Bautista wurde von 1909 bis 1977 im neugotischen Stil erbaut. Sie besteht aus Aruca-Basalt (sehr langsam erkalteten Lava). Trotz ihrer Größe ist sie keine Kathedrale, die Leute hatten einfach zur Platz, Zeit und Geld ne fette Kirche hinzustellen.

Der Grund, warum man das ganze Geld hatte, liegt in der Landwirtschaft. Zuerst wurde hier Karmin aus Schildläusen gewonnen, dann Zuckerrohr und schließlich Bananen angebaut. Heute steht die komplette Altstadt unter Denkmalschutz.

10 Minuten Fußweg von der Altstadt entfernt gibt es einen kleinen botanischen Garten. Der Jardin de la Marquessa wurde 1880 von Don Ramón Madam y Uriondo, dem ersten Marquis von Arucas, angelegt. Er sammelte 400 Pflanzenarten aus fünf Kontinenten und ließ sie um seine Sommerresidenz herum anpflanzen.

Neben Pflanzen lebt hier auch eine Pfauenkolonie.

Is Britain Corrupt (Part 2)

This week's Black Spy Podcast asks the question: Is Britain, and indeed the West, corrupt?

During part two of this fascinating discussion, Carlton King and Dr. Rachel Taylor suggest that what is all important is the definition and perception of what corruption is. The Black Spy Podcast team argue that corruption involves the abuse of power for personal gain, encompassing both overt acts, such as bribery, and more subtle forms, such as cronyism or undue influence.

So, although there are, in Britain and in many Western nations, robust legal frameworks, independent judiciaries, and a semblance of a free media, supposedly contributing to transparency and accountability, it can not be taken for granted that these measures work. Hence, although the UK has bodies like the the National Audit Office and parliamentary committees tasked with scrutinizing public spending and governance questions, the issue remains live.

  Western countries often rank relatively high on indices like Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index, reflecting lower levels of perceived corruption compared to many other regions. But is this correct?

Criticisms of corruption in the West often center on systemic issues rather than overt illegality. Examples of this include lobbying, where wealthy individuals or corporations wield disproportionate influence over policy-making and opportunities for enrichment. This raises ethical concerns, even if it adheres to legal frameworks. The "revolving door" between politics and private industry is another area of lack of scrutiny, as it can blur lines between public service and private interests.

Furthermore, scandals such as the 2009 UK parliamentary expenses controversy or financial misconduct exposed during the 2008 economic crisis demonstrate these vulnerabilities. Similarly, some argue that offshore tax havens linked to Western jurisdictions enable global financial corruption.

Hence, in conclusion, while Britain and the West exhibit relatively low levels of overt corruption, systemic practices and scandals often come to light that suggest that the region is not immune to its own ethical and accountability challenges.

  Moreover, the Black Spy Podcast team note that perceptions of corruption often depend on the accepted societal norms, expectations, and evolving definitions of those compiling corruption indices.
