Avatar 3 D23 musings and analysis
Images drop on some BIG screens at D23 seems like!
First off, great new looks and close ups of Varang!
First off it's super dope. Look at her fingers! Looks like she's wearing claws (bone? forbidden metal? body mods). The notches on her belly and legs also look like potential scarifications!
Stuff I want to scream about on a personal level: The tswins... I made my Txepiva (ash Na'vi) fan clan to be warrior like, living in more desertic areas, and cutting queues as part of warfare. I also recently made a sketch to illustrate an idea to a friend that they may wear these queues in a bandolier tied to shoulders and hips as a show-off.
My Txepiva also have bare tail tips, and Varangs fits this too in this art, though I'm sure it's just the light rendering technique. If not, then I should apply for a job on the brainstorming team lmao.
Though I appreciate the idea of warfare and tswin cutting, I want to point out it's also possible that she's not actually wearing the tswin of her enemies, or at least not in the "this is how we kill other Na'vi" way.
The others around her are in obscuring and impractical headdresses, and this looks like a ritual. IMO it's very possible that the tswin she wears are that of ancestors, or old leaders, great warriors, or even enemies, collected and rebraided to create this distinct look. I particularly think it'd make sense for it to be made of the hair of past leaders and worn as a sort of crown, as nobody else is rocking that look in the image.
Next we have her weird not-an-ikran.
Glorious beast with 10 winglets where ikran have 4. It also has mouth frills, jaw frills, and a spike over its head, making it closer to stingbats in that area. Here's a super obvious comparison with an enlarged stingbat picture:
So their mount probaby evolved independantly from ikran. Would be fun if they also have poison.
Another FUN detail : GUNS!! Does it look like guns? Could be recoms then, Lyle, Q , and some new red shirt recoms... or could be Omatikaya wil RDA guns...
But for real, there are only two types of Na'vi with guns: the Omatikaya clan and the recombinants. Given past images in leaks ((remember this?))
It's most likely that the people interacting with Varang are going to be recoms and not Jake's people. BUT who knows where the plot will go. If it's recoms, I'd looove to know if it's 3 moffos because Q+Lyle+Mansk, or if we're getting new recom red shirts or what.
Then we have views of air ships, so we're getting to see the promised Wind Traders, with Neytiri in the forefront, and the Man'o'war inspired floaters being pulled by sky manta ray...
Not much to say about those. I just hope we get some high definition version released online soon.
If this reignites your hype for Avatar, go vote in this poll!
There's 20h left to vote, and I think we could all benefit from an event around december 2024, to pass the time before fire and ash's big dropin 2025.

"waaaaaa James Cameron is sTEaLiNG from ATLA!!!11!!1!"
sigh yeah sorry but this is just a really stupid claim. There are some fun coincidences, but they are just that: coincidence, nothing more. If it weren't for the fact that both franchises happen to use the word "avatar", a term which neither of them owns nor invented, it wouldn't have even crossed your mind to compare them.
Oh, they both have "water" themed groups? Sure, but the concept of "water" is really the only thing those groups have in common. The Water Tribes in ATLA are arctic-dwelling peoples heavily inspired by the Inuit (plus the Swampbenders, idk if they have a formal name or how widespread their society is), neither of which are locations or cultures we've seen explored in James Cameron's Avatar (which for the sake of this post we'll abbreviate to JCA). Meanwhile, the Metkayina clan in JCA are a tropical island-dwelling people heavily inspired by the Maori and other Polynesian cultures, which likewise is a culture/location that ATLA didn't explore.
They both have an "evil" fire-themed group? Sure, but again it's not 1:1 and it's very odd that y'all are acting like ATLA invented the concept of fire=bad guys. This one's a little harder to analyze because we of course don't know a lot about the Mangkuan clan yet, but from what little we've heard, it seems their reason for being antagonists is that they've turned their backs on Eywa (the deity revered by most Na'vi clans) after a series of natural disasters destroyed their homeland and they felt Eywa didn't do enough to help them. This is a very different motivation from the Fire Nation, who are antagonists because Sozin was power-hungry enough to commit unprovoked genocide on a peaceful nation and start a hundred-year war to conquer the other two. "Fire" and "antagonists" are the only similarities these groups have.
It's also worth noting that the Fire Nation are the primary antagonists of ATLA, whereas the Mangkuan (as far as we can currently tell) are only secondary antagonists in JCA, who may or may not get involved with the actual primary antagonists, the RDA. In this sense, if we're going to force a connection between ATLA and JCA, the Mangkuan might actually be more conceptually comparable to the Dai Lee than to the Fire Nation. Both are factions of what are supposed to be a "good" group (the Na'vi and Earth Kingdom, respectively) who got involved in shady practices and wind up aligning with the primary antagonists (the RDA and Fire Nation). There are still plenty of differences, of course, and this is far too broad a concept to call it a definitive "copy", but there you go.
They both have a group of flying travelers? The Air Nomads were monks and spiritualists who migrated between their own four temples. The Windtraders—based on what very very little we currently know—are merchants who travel to various other clans to trade.
All these comparisons are based on very broad vague ideas that can potentially be executed in a gazillion different unique ways. I don't think James Cameron "stole" these ideas from ATLA, but hey, for the sake of argument, let's say he did. Let's assume that he did purposefully take the very vague very broad ideas of "water people" and "evil fire people" and "flying travelers" specifically and exclusively from ATLA. What he's DOING with these ideas is still completely different from what ALTA does with them.
Take it from someone who adores both franchises: they are completely different. One is about humans with supernatural ability to bend the elements in a fantasy universe heavily inspired by primarily Asian cultures, the other is about a nine-foot-tall blue alien race living on an alien moon where everything glows in the dark and every living being on said moon has the ability to biologically "plug in" to a global neural network. As I mentioned at the beginning of the post, the only reason anyone even thinks to compare them in the first place is merely that their titles share the word "avatar", a term which again neither franchise owns nor invented. If they didn't share this title, nobody would be calling any of these things a "copy". stop.
#is it fun that both “avatar”s share a few vague ideas if you look hard enough for them? sure!#does it automatically imply anything more than a fun coincidence? NO#avatar#avatar 2009#the way of water#fire and ash#atla#if you're an atla fan reading this post who isn't into jca: THAT'S TOTALLY FINE! you do you! no one's gonna force you to watch or enjoy jca#but you don't need to crap on it for sins it didn't commit thanks#if it's not your cup of tea that's fine!#but it's not “copying” atla come on y'all. weak sauce criticism

Okay so since the concept art for avatar 3 has come out everyone has been pointing out Varang’s “kuru necklace”
I personally don’t think she takes the Kurus of certain clan members or her enemies but maybe instead the Kurus of past clan leaders who have passed
But if she does maybe take the Kurus of clan members I think, looking at the image. It could be a cool/really scary horror concept. Maybe since their Kurus are basically their neural systems to connect to Eywa maybe it makes them disabled in a way. Like they kinda start to lose motor function and they become pale and sickly. Maybe she makes them wear masks like in the art up there and she wears their Kurus. It could be like clan members who try to disagree with her ways or who try to stop whatever she’s doing. Or maybe who try to escape. She makes them her like servants or whatever? Maybe she has this kind of need for control and enjoys seeing others suffering.
Look I really don’t think that the case and it’s either not Kurus or just the Kurus of past clan leaders who have passed because not only does cutting off a Kuru disconnect them from Eywa and any form of bond they could have (which is the whole Na’vi way no matter the clan) but it’s also extremely painful and mostly leads to death and they’re very lucky to survive something like that. It could also probably do damage apart from death such as disability (paralysis, becoming a vegetable of sorts, stuff like that) and if she did do that the clan members could easily overtake her and kill her and I highly doubt they would all be okay with her just torturing her people because she can because Na’vi are very compassionate, caring and headstrong creatures. They would definitely not let that happen. Also if other clans hear of this they would most definitely stop her. She’s only one person. The reason one person in power works with humans is because of technology, and money. We can make people do what we want with money, or a threat of a lack of money, we can easily use certain technologies to do other things they can’t

The Ay'Amhul Navi have their own version of what Eywa look like. They also think of her to be an androgynous being who constantly changes into animals or even other Navi. But they deeply believe that she mainly takes the form of a woman. They have shrines around the forest and a temple which have a small statue of her. (I based her on Ix Chel, the Mayan Goddess of fertility, physical love, weaving, and the moon.)

What if the reason Tsu'tey is in "Fire and Ash" is because we know at the end of "Next Shadow" that his parents go to live with "clans out in the ashes" and so Tsu'tey has to mentally project in to tell them to go get his mom

So apparently it's now been officially confirmed that the "Mangkwan" clan briefly mentioned at the end of The Next Shadow comics IS indeed the "ash clan" that will be featured in Fire and Ash (a lot of people speculated this before but it wasn't confirmed until now).
...which is all fine and dandy, except that kw is still not a valid consonant cluster, Karyu Pawl plz explain, the language nerds are crying 😭 Was this perhaps a typo of Mangkuan or Mangkawn? Or a new dialect that allows for more clusters? Or something else?
Right now my theory is that it's gonna be Mangkuan and the Mangkuan vs Mangkwan spelling difference will essentially be the same as Omatikaya vs Omaticaya (the first one being the technically "correct" one per Na'vi phonetics but the second still showing up in some canon material).
Part of the problem here, I think, comes down to what I'm gonna call the Cameron Paradox. James Cameron didn't create the Na'vi language; he created a small list of words, as well as all the character names (from the movies at least, idk about the comics and games), then hired linguist Paul Frommer (Karyu Pawl) to do the rest. Cameron's grammatical/phonetic/etc understanding of the language Frommer built, from what I can tell, seems to be pretty limited; those details are Frommer's realm. So it's very possible that Cameron chose the name Mangkwan because it sounded cool and simply had no idea that it's technically invalid within the sound system Frommer set up.
However...while Cameron himself isn't the one who created the Na'vi language, he does technically own it. It's a commissioned work and therefore Cameron, as the commissioner, has the power to override Frommer if he wishes. If Cameron has his heart set on "Mangkwan", Frommer doesn't really have a choice but to work around that. He might end up doing that by hand-waving it as a special spelling variation of "Mangkuan" (again like the explanation of c vs k in Omatikaya), or he might end up doing it by incorporating some sort of special new dialect rules for the Ash People. Or maybe some other solution that I haven't thought of. We just don't know yet.
...and Karyu Pawl might not actually be legally allowed to address it until after the movie's release date, so we might be waiting for a quite a while to find out ;w;
#avatar#avatar 3#fire and ash#lì'fya leNa'vi#mangkwan#ash people#for my own nerdy peace of mind I'm probably gonna spell it Mangkuan until/unless KP says otherwise 😅#for the same reason that I refuse to spell the character name “Eetu” like that (it should be Itu and I will spell it Itu gosh darnit!)#of course if the “mangkwan” spelling turns out to be a dialect difference I'm gonna spell it Mangkuan anyways#(while writing in Na'vi at least)#because I write in the Forest dialect so “kw” still will not be valid in Forest even if it turns out to be valid in Ash 😅

James Cameron’s ‘Avatar 3’ officially titled ‘Fire and Ash’
The visual spectacle film franchise ‘Avatar’ has got its official title for the third part. Director James Cameron and stars Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington revealed the first official title for the film during the D23 exp: ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’.
While Cameron didn’t preview any footage, he did showcase some concept art from the film, including Neytiri (Saldana) dancing over flames and riding banshees, reports Variety.
