I'm learning Finnish on Duolingo. The owls name is Pöllö. He's such a friendly little idiot teacher🤭🤦♀️
I went to the local aviary today and they had some really mean things to say about owls.

re: Duolingo using AI and people choosing to stop using it but feeling lost as to how to access language learning
One alternative app you might look into is MangoLanguages -- it's often free through your local public library! Try going to get a library card and checking if they have it as an online resource. If you can't get access for free through the public library, you can pay a few bucks a month (actually might be like $10? I'd have to double check).
(And yes, MangoLangs has Finnish!)

Yo if anyone's going to Käärijä's Backas gig in Vantaa I'll bring some 2023 stickers so you can get them if you want. But you will have to talk first because I'm very shy 👉👈
#i know it's the fandom with the most shy people in the world but you have to be strong ✊#unless we can talk in Polish or German in which case I'm more confident thn in English#hell i can try to make use of the 15 Finnish words i learned in duolingo. anything but english

i get duolingo not being a great option for learning finnish, but would you say its any good for at least getting one in the habit of using finnish every day and familiarizing themselves with using it (if that makes sense)? or would you still recommend something else?
Hi!
Unless you say things like "I am a wizard." daily, you won't really learn any Finnish that's used daily on Duolingo. It doesn't teach you any casual language, so you wouldn't even be able to hold a native-level conversation in the wild even if you completed the whole course. You'll also get multiple questions about conjugation which Duo fails to teach. You won't be able to conjugate a single word to its fullest potential.
If you can live with that, go ahead!
For daily Finnish input, I'd seriously recommend Yle's selkosuomi news ; and once you get the hang of kirjakieli, move on to watching actual content directed at native speakers like YouTube or podcasts. Whenever I am learning a language I just write whatever the people say down, note any words I don't know, and then point out the main grammar points.
#finnish#suomen kieli#if you are reading this duolingo im sorry#its not like i hate you#but you won't help a finnish learner like this

Is it just me or does anyone else get the irrational urge to... learn every F1 driver's native language even if I would probably never use it irl😭😂
#i'm that 🤏🏻 close to pulling up Duolingo and learning danish or finnish or dutch or smth#all these languages wouldn't give me any benefits whatsoever in my real life#but oh the temptation#f1#max verstappen#kimi raikkonen#valtteri bottas#kevin magnussen#kmag#at least i'm german because that langauge is probably a whole other beast#plus i know a decent amount of spanish and english obv#logically I whould try my hand at french or italian i guess#as these languages are also commonly taught here in Germany#formula 1#formula one

So, Duolingo has failed me. I’ve “completed” the Finnish course. This… is not what knowing a language looks like.
I have a tiny vocabulary. I do not understand grammar. I can’t reliably understand anything besides basic concepts.
But damned if I can’t say “minulla on helmi.” Or “tämä laulu soi kuin hirvi.”
