All this could have been avoided if Cody had been allowed to pick the infil site. Their landing had been rough but serviceable—the pilot, who only answered to “Kit,” had been grinning and cracking jokes to ease up nerves even as he evaded turret fire and nearly strafed them into the ocean. They’d gotten into the control center all the same, even if Kit had to stay behind with the JEDI heavy to repair the shielding system.
“Commander, these numbers are all wrong,” Crys hissed. “I can take out the security feeds, but this base is way farther along than we thought it was. I mean, we were expecting the turrets and a couple OR14 tanks on top of the usual. But this is—”
Cody exchanged looks with their “combat medic.” In the SEP, that really meant “this medic will make sure you don’t die, and he’s going to do that by killing the other guy first.” Kix had the steadiest hands of any soldier Cody had worked with, whether they were on the scalpel or a biotic rifle. The other medic was another JEDI loan, a woman who wore a combination of robes and light body armor.
“We’re running out of time,” Cody finally said. “We won’t get another chance to destabilize the Donghae Omnium. This mission is critical to the war effort.” They wouldn’t have sent Cody otherwise—though Cody had his suspicions about that. The higher-ups were fond of sending SEP soldiers into situations with unwinnable odds. Their own homegrown, red-eyed time bombs.
Gregor, another SEP soldier like Cody, laughed and thumped the front of his power armor. “De oppresso liber, Commander. Overwhelming odds is the name of the game. Hey, you think I could beat 17’s KIR on this one?”
“If you think you can take out more omnics than times you get incapacitated, feel free,” Kix said, dry as anything. “Much less top the Strike Commander.”
“Feedback loop established,” Crys murmured, catching Cody’s eye. He’d gone through SEP like Cody and Gregor, but every soldier took to it a little differently. Cody had gotten an even spread of improved reflexes, metabolism, strength, and speed. Gregor’s enhancements had maxed out his strength and metabolism, letting him shake off hits that would kill or cripple an unenhanced human. Crys’ were subtler; he was even faster than Cody, if not as strong, and the chems had somehow boosted his cognitive performance. They’d made it possible for him to undergo cybernetic procedures that would have been deemed much too risky for any unenhanced human.
“We’re in?” Cody checked the safety on his pulse rifle.
“Affirmative. We’ll be going in hot. Patrol patterns will only get tighter as we near the control room. And—” Crys grimaced, electric blue eyes flashing with computerized input. “—if we can’t find an exit fast after we secure the central control hub…”
Cody nodded. “Kit and Sgt. Drallig will secure our exfil.”
“I’m tapped into the alarm system, but there’s a chance for it to be tripped manually,” Crys warned.
“Then we’ll take out any omnics we come across before they can get to it.” Cody gestured for his squad to move out.
Their movement further into the base was easy. Too easy. Every one of them was on high alert yet they still didn’t see the ambush until they tripped it—a full squadron of OR14s blockading the corridor with not one or two but three fucking Bastion turrets and a shielding unit for the whole goddamned party. Fun for all ages.
Then the second wave of war machines flooded into the corridor behind them in a pincer attack that would have made 17 cry big ugly tears of joy, and the mission was officially FUBAR.
Cody was about to start making his peace with the world at large when the razor-sharp head of an arrow sprouted from the chassis of the OR14 tank bearing down on him. He stared, mouth dry and tasting of char and blood. Sizzling blue light arced along its shaft and the OR14 buckled as its electrical systems shorted out.
“I’m hit!” Crys shouted over comms. Gregor was holding their backline and going toe to toe with another pair of OR14 tanks for his efforts. But this wasn’t a sustainable position. And even with SEP enhancements, they couldn’t hold forever.
“I’ve got you.” Kix swore viciously over comms as he ducked behind cover, half-dragging Crys behind him.
They hadn’t even gotten to the control room yet. Much less secured it. Whoever had given Overwatch HQ the stats on this base, they’d been lying out of their ass. Cody resolved to get back to Geneva just to wring necks over it. Let alone—
“You should not have let your guard down,” an imperious voice said. A tall man hauled Cody up like he weighed as much as a kitten. His face was half covered by an armored cowl but dark eyes and heavy eyebrows were furrowed in a scowl at him. Innocuous against his Japanese-style body armor and shoulder quiver of high-tech arrows, a head of auburn-bleached hair gleamed in the harsh LEDs of the control base.
Cody’s pulse rifle got slapped back into his hands and it felt like his brain got rebooted at the same moment. “Who the hell are you?”
“The man that is about to save your life,” the archer replied. “You have the technology to disable the control room once you breach it then, yes?”
“This is a classified—”
“Good.” The archer nodded. He had the gall to wink at Cody over the cowl. “You don’t have to spill all of your secrets yet, Commander. I like my allies a little more… long-lasting.”
Bloody hell. Cody grinned despite himself and wiped the blood off his brow from where a stray shard of shrapnel had almost taken his eye out. “Talk after. Take out the control room now.”
“That kind of forthrightness is what I like to see in a man,” the archer purred as he nocked an arrow and drew his bow. The weight on that thing had to be over forty, forty-one kilos, but the man did it easy as breathing.
Another fighter—especially one as good as this archer—made all the difference. He took down an OR14 from around a corner without breaking a sweat. Half his shots connected in ways that seemed to bend the laws of physics—scatter arrows, rebounds, trick shots from across the entire fucking corridor, all while the man flipped and twisted through the air like an Olympic acrobat.
Crys was able to break open the central hub after a round of healing nanite injections from Kix. Gregor held the doors as their point of defense while Crys uploaded a series of viruses that would cripple the omnium’s comms network and foul their navigations systems, rendering them ducks in a barrel when the local MEKA forces swept in to wipe the rest of the base out.
All this while the archer trashed different parts of the server room alongside Cody, wrecking hardware and banks of data drives. He took an inordinate amount of glee from swinging his bow into monitors and kicking through holographic projectors.
“I’ll clear you a path out,” the archer said when he was done.
“How do I know you’re gonna make it out after me?” Cody asked and checked the charge left on his magazine. They could make it out. This was far from the desperate last stand Cody had thought they’d be making. All thanks to—
The archer hesitated, gloved hands flexing on the grip of his bow. “Is this you asking for my number, Commander? I’m not usually so easy as all that.”
“I can’t buy you drinks if I don’t even know your name or how to contact you,” Cody replied. He stepped closer even as every instinct he had screamed at him to step away, that this man was—somehow—more dangerous than any omnic or tank. “And I’m not the kind of man to leave a dept unfulfilled.”
“No debt,” the archer murmured, dark eyes studying Cody’s face intently. He reached out to brush the tips of his gloved fingers across Cody’s brow, where the shrapnel had torn his face open. It was already clotted and healing, the too-hot feel of inflammation telling Cody that his body was working overtime to seal the wound. “You should get this looked at. Unless you want a dashing scar as a keepsake of our time together. But you don’t seem to be a sentimental man, Commander.”
“I might surprise you.” Cody caught the archer’s wrist, studying him in turn. His roots were showing under the bleach job. They were as ink black as his eyebrows. Thin crow’s feet lined his dark and narrow eyes, expressive for all that the cowl hid his mouth and nose. He hadn’t noticed the curved sword strapped to his back until now. On first guess, it might have been a katana—but Cody didn’t know enough about swords to identify it at a glance. Strangely archaic weapons for such a skilled fighter. It only made Cody hungrier—for more time, more intel, a greedy wish to see his face uncovered.
“Ben,” the archer finally said. “I don’t doubt that, Commander. I… travel often. But you’ve made a convincing argument for those drinks.” He plucked a thin, metallic token out of some hidden pocket and tucked it into a pouch on Cody’s tac belt with nimble fingers. The feel of Ben’s hand on his belt had a thrill of—something running through him.
“That’s Drallig on the line,” Crys said into comms, voice oddly strangled. “Exfil secured.”
“Move out,” Cody barked. He took a hasty step back from Ben, who only smiled—if the wrinkling by his eyes meant anything. “You have an exit?”
“Commander,” Ben purred, nocking another one of his strange and sparking arrows, “let’s just say… my backdoor is very well secured.”
Kix let out a strangled noise. He had one of Crys’ arms over his shoulders, the slicer looking like he’d lost a little too much blood as they’d lingered in the control room.
“Wipe that smirk off your face, Lt.,” Cody barked as he passed Gregor. “We have an exit to make.”
“Sir yes sir.” Gregor saluted him with one of his hulking rotary cannons and the comm line exploded into laughter.
Back at base, Cody suffered 17’s scrutiny while his face was sutured back together in a medic’s tender loving care. He had healed too fast, sealing in the shrapnel. The wound needed to be sliced back open, cleaned, and then stitched together again.
“Yeah, that’s gonna scar,” 17 said with a vicious laugh.
Pot. Kettle.
“You recognize this?” Cody flipped 17 the token “Ben” had left him with.
17 caught it out of the air and turned it over in one big hand. His face was unreadable—but maybe that was all the scarring. He’d no doubt already read Cody’s brief. “I knew you’d left something out. You’re a shit liar, kid.”
“That’s a yes.” If 17 knew who Ben was… and Ben had known Cody by name—not unusual in and of itself. Cody was a high-ranking soldier in a global peacekeeping force fighting against the worldwide invasion of the omnics. The Omnic Crisis was wreaking havoc on a scale never before seen but it was also engendering collaboration on an unprecedented level. MEKA, SEP, JEDI, Overwatch, the Crusaders, Volskaya… the best way to unite humankind was to give them a common enemy.
“Yeah. See this?” 17 held up the token so the light glinted off the strange symbol in the corner. It almost looked like a pair of dragons twined together—in an embrace or locked in battle, Cody couldn’t tell. “That’s old blood Yakuza. The Shimada clan. Word was that they all died out after the eldest son went batshit and murdered half the family. Bye-bye, little brother. Bye-bye, gramps. Man was set to succeed the throne of one of the most powerful crime families in East Asia. Instead he wiped them out in a matter of weeks and disappeared off the map.”
“How do you know…?”
17 tapped the token and slid it across the flimsy bedside table to rest by the head of Cody’s medical cot. “The twin dragons are a symbol of power and blood ties. Only the ruling heads of the family got ‘em as their insignia. Out of every high-ranking asshole in the Shimada Clan, only one survived the bloodbath. Take a guess, kid.”
Cody swallowed. The level of skill, the cutting-edge gear, the sharpness in Ben’s eyes… it made too much sense for him to reject it out of hand.
“Shimada the elder is bad fucking news,” 17 said flatly. “Any man that can betray his family like that—crime bosses or not—is a big fat warning sign. You hear me, Cody?”
Yes. Warning sign. Bad news. Danger. Absolutely. Cody saluted 17 and fought down his wince when the movement pulled at his stitches and bruises.
“Bloody hell,” 17 muttered, throwing his hands up in disgust. “Why do I even bother. You know what, kid, if you want to chase after rumors and ghosts, that’s your call. It’s not like I’ve got sixteen years of wisdom on you or anything.”
“Fifteen and a half,” Cody said and bared his teeth up at 17. Never let it be said that he wouldn’t hold his oldest brother to a certain standard of integrity and truthfulness.
“Fucking brat,” 17 muttered. But he scrubbed his knuckles over Cody’s curls in a way that meant affection for him and gave him a sharp nod. That was as good as a big shiny medal and a commendation, coming from 17.
After 17 left the room with the medic, Cody pulled the token over to him and gingerly laid back among his stiff medbay-issue pillows. The center of the metal token was smooth and slightly worn down. His own thumb fit perfectly into the imprint and the metal warmed to his touch.

"Why Would You Be Loved" by Hozier
Verse 1 It's only said to be kind the time that you have with love You're never told but you're loaned it It's a lie, the high that you have with love It feels like gold when you hold it And know it's sweet, to know it when it's gone, baby, So why, why, why
In Hozier’s self-titled first album, love could be a deliverance from the problems of the world (i.e., Take me to Church, Jackie & Wilson, To Be Alone, Work Song).
This latest release “from the vault” fits thematically into Wasteland Baby, where love is yet another complication in chaotic world (i.e. Shrike, Talk, Would That I, Sunlight).
Chorus Why would you be lovin' Why would you be lovin' Why would you be lovin', hey And, hey, why would you be loved Mm, hey, why would you be loved
Hozier repeats this existential question over and over – love is not permanent, or a safe haven, it ends up hurting us, so why do we keep doing it? Why bother to give and receive love?
A few years later, On Unreal Unearth, Hozier resolves his own question with All Things End. Despair and bewilderment at the inevitable end of love has turned into “nihilistic optimism.”
Just knowing That everything will end Should not change our plans When we begin again
Verse 2 Now the world falls apart it starts with their actin' up I wouldn't say it, but I blame them The bleedin' hearts, the arts & that other stuff All the same motivations will melt away Like snowflakes on a tongue, baby So why, why, why
Besides the struggle with romantic love, the other major theme of Wasteland Baby is the ominous dread of apocalypse approaching, and the need to rise up politically against the dangers of the ruling class.
“Bleeding hearts” and “snowflakes” are doing double duty here, as terms for the tenderness and fragility of romantic love but also as derogatory terms for those with leftist or progressive politics.
“The word falls apart, it starts with their actin up, I wouldn’t say it but I blame them.”
I can see several possible interpretations for this opening line of verse 2, and who is the “they” acting up:
It feels like the world falls apart when your relationship ends, and you know the end is near once “actin up” or more conflicts/annoyances begin between the two.
Hozier “blames them,” all the older musicians whose work he listened to in youth, that love is not as “the arts” promised. Now in heartbreak again, he feels unprepared or misled on the true nature of love (and maybe realizes that his work too has contributed to the cultural myth of “love conquers all.”)
Hozier may feel frustrated that artists can describe the world so well, but all their efforts and talent are just "other stuff" and cannot directly change or fix anything.
“They” are the ruling class, and the world is literally falling apart on their watch. “I blame them” for keeping the people fixated on finding perfect romantic love, instead of noticing injustices that we are all harmed by, coming together in larger communities for mutual care or political action. (This final theory may sound a bit tinfoily, but Hozier has politics side by side with love throughout so many songs in Wasteland Baby, it seems hardly a stretch. Look what’s coming in verse 3!)
Bridge Why would you play it all on somethin' as hollow as trust? What if you gave it all, to find that it wasn't enough? What if under the gaze of all, you come short when the going gets rough?
Hozier reveals a worse fear than his lover not caring enough, what if his own best isn’t good enough to keep the relationship going? The “gaze of all” may be a nod to his fame, which came from writing romantic love songs, and is sustained by fans, some of whom openly imagine that he must be the perfect boyfriend.
Bad enough for anyone to come up short in love, but for “Hozier” to fail in this way might be an extra mind-fuck or identity crisis for him.
This tension seems to be resolved in “Too Sweet” where Hozier admits that his career & lifestyle might make him incompatible with some romantic partners, but he loves his life and is content to go their separate ways.
Verse 3 They look for somethin' to be done for those that are most in pain What about me and my achin'? The scales rehung, the breakin' of yoke and chain What about me and my breakin'? And if you ain't for all, how could you try at all, baby? So why, why, why
I can hear the back and forth internal dialogue between two attitudes in the same mind, and boy do I relate to this exact exchange.
Part of Hozier wants to protest for justice and freedom, in the spirit of Nina Cried Power, Jackboot Jump, Be, and even Moment’s Silence. While another part of him is in so much pain that he wants to be cared for and not take on the burden of others pain. Heartbreak and the world hurtling toward destruction both feel like impossible struggles to solve.
[Tangent for Enneagram folks – Hozier is likely a type 4, which is described as romantic, creative, gentle, prone to sadness, high emotional intelligence. Type 4s have a “growth direction” of Type 1, which is described as hard-working, disciplined, devoted to their ideals, and concerned about justice in society. I hear this verse as some push and pull between the Enneagram 1 part that wants to save the world, and the Enneagram 4 that wants to languish in sadness until they feel healed.]
Other Wasteland Baby songs that pair the ruin & hope of love with the ruin & hope of apocalypse include:
Be Be love in its disrepute (lover, be good to me) Scorches the hillside and salts every root (lover, be good to me) And watches the slowin' and starvin' of troops And, lover, be good to me (lover be good to me) Be there and just as you stand (lover, be good to me) Or be like the rose that you hold in your hand (lover, be good to me) That grow bold in a barren and desolate land And lover be good to me
Wasteland Baby And the day that we'll watch the death of the sun That the cloud & the cold and those jeans you have on Then you'll gaze unafraid as they sob from the city roofs Wasteland, baby I'm in love I'm in love with you
NFWMB Ain't it a gentle sound, the rollin' in the graves? … Ain't it warming you, the world gone up in flames? … Ain't you my baby? ain't you my babe?

He ran across the vast plain and reached the territory of the humans. He proved that the one who arrives at the finish line first is faster than the one who runs fast. So, what do you have to do if you wish to run like him? How about you start running southward? Just 372 miles. Compliment effect: With your marvelous show of tenacity and endurance, you have opened a new era of long-distance running to the centaurs. That’s the famous Pantara Railway, which I’m sure every one of you knows. Student in the front row. Could you briefly walk us through how this railroad came to be? Excellent. That’s correct. The Pantara Railway, just like what the student said, is a masterpiece built by Lloyd Frontera, who received an order from the Magentano House. Hahaha. Are you all bored? It’s Lloyd Frontera again. Look at this section, and you’ll find Lloyd Frontera. Move on to the next part and you still find him. I, too, am sick of him. Had it not been for him, we would only have one eight of what we will study this summer. But what else can we do? That son of a gun set the groundwork for the civil engineering of our empire. So, it would be unfair if we were the only ones to suffer, no? Let’s hit the book. Come now. Let’s study harder, create new theories and make it harder for the students who’ll come after you all. All right, so the Pantara Railroad introduced the switchback system for the first time in the world… Compliment Effect: You used every means possible to finish the railroad in the Pantara Range. In this process, you tricked countless people who shuddered in shock and repulsion. The demons watching over you could not give you enough praise. As a result, countless residents of Hell and the undead have come to respect and admire you even more strongly. Precaution: The affections of the demons may come at the expense of Hell's King overwhelming desire to recruit you. Which book should I read next?
Inspired by @ckerouac - I picked out one book from each of my eight bookshelves** - one that I haven't read and that's been on my TBR list for a while. I'm letting you guys decide which one to read! Let me know what you think! And I'll read the one you pick next....
**- one of the bookshelves is dedicated to Young Reader books, and sitting on top of it are a couple of books that my bother loaned me, so I've included that instead of an actual YR title.
Info about the books under the cut
From the Fiction/Classics bookshelf: Less by Andrew Sean Greer
You are a failed novelist about to turn fifty. A wedding invitation arrives in the mail: your boyfriend of the past nine years now engaged to someone else. You can’t say yes--it would all be too awkward--and you can’t say no--it would look like defeat. On your desk are a series of half-baked literary invitations you’ve received from around the world. How do you arrange to skip town? You accept them all.
From the Graphic Novels bookshelf: Sandman by Neil Gaiman (Vol. 1)
In PRELUDES & NOCTURNES, an occultist attempting to capture Death to bargain for eternal life traps her younger brother Dream instead. After his 70 year imprisonment and eventual escape, Dream, also known as Morpheus, goes on a quest for his lost objects of power. On his arduous journey, Morpheus encounters Lucifer, John Constantine, and an all-powerful madman.
From the Sci-fi/Fantasy bookshelf: The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson
It has been centuries since the fall of the ten consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor that transform ordinary men into near-invincible warriors. Men trade kingdoms for Shardblades. Wars were fought for them, and won by them. One such war rages on a ruined landscape called the Shattered Plains. There, Kaladin, who traded his medical apprenticeship for a spear to protect his little brother, has been reduced to slavery. In a war that makes no sense, where ten armies fight separately against a single foe, he struggles to save his men and to fathom the leaders who consider them expendable.
From the Mystery bookshelf: The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman
In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet up once a week to investigate unsolved murders. But when a brutal killing takes place on their very doorstep, the Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case. Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron might be pushing eighty but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves. Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before it's too late?
From the Non-Fiction bookshelf: The Great Green Room by Amy Gary
The extraordinary life of the woman behind the beloved children’s classics Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny comes alive in this fascinating biography of Margaret Wise Brown. Margaret’s books have sold millions of copies all over the world, but few people know that she was at the center of a children’s book publishing revolution. Her whimsy and imagination fueled a steady stream of stories, book ideas, songs, and poems and she was renowned for her prolific writing and business savvy, as well as her stunning beauty and endless thirst for adventure.
From the Agatha Christie bookshelf: The Science of Murder by Carla Valentine
Agatha Christie is the bestselling novelist of all time, and nearly every story she ever wrote involves one―or, more commonly, several―dead bodies. And the cause of death, the motives behind violent crimes, the clues that inevitably are left behind, and the people who put the pieces together to solve the mystery invite the reader to analyze the evidence and race to find the answer before the detective does. Nearly every step of the way, Christie outlines the nuts and bolts of early 20th-century crime detection, relying on physical evidence to tell the real story behind the facades humans erect to escape detection.
From the Young Adult bookshelf: Scythe by Neal Shusterman
A world with no hunger, no disease, no war, no misery. Humanity has conquered all those things, and has even conquered death. Now scythes are the only ones who can end life—and they are commanded to do so, in order to keep the size of the population under control. Citra and Rowan are chosen to apprentice to a scythe—a role that neither wants. These teens must master the “art” of taking life, knowing that the consequence of failure could mean losing their own.
From (on top of the) Young Readers bookshelf: What If It's Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it. Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things. But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them?
#books#i actually do want to read all of these so it's win win for me#this is fun RB I should try it once a month or something#i'm going to keep reblogging this until you all vote...

tell me abt xa’rok !!
AHHHH you're so sweet!!
Some primers:
Xa'rok's responses to the githmap
Xa'rok and the Emperor (with bonus backstory overview and future musings)
Ramblings about illithid!Xa'rok and their tumultuous future
misc headcanons, wilderness survival training
Relevant character tags: tav: xa'rok, tav: skaro
THAT SAID, meet Xa'rok (they/them) a (former) githyanki bard/ranger, who also answers to the title of the Astral Envoy.
They were born in a creche deep in the icy mountains way up north near the Spine of the World. Their creche was isolated from other githyanki on the material plane, and their remote seclusion gave rise to an interesting selection of Vlaakith's 'faithful'. At Creche Zythir, curiosity was encouraged, and open-mindedness praised. Their sa'varsh favored keen minds and a thirst for knowledge in addition to power. To inquire was always rewarded. But only, as Xa'rok would learn, up to a point.
Xa'rok's own curiosity was sharpened like any other tool in a gith's arsenal, and like their kin's, put to good use. When the kith'rakis returned triumphant from raids they would dump their spoils in the middle of the main hall and let the yanks fight over the prizes, which they could only keep on loan in return for learning everything they could about what prize they claimed, later to be divulged at length and recorded. These prizes were hardwon and viciously fought for. Through several of these bloody claiming lessons, Xa'rok began to learn about their peoples' greatest enemy, the ghaik.
But what started as the thrill of praise in the claiming room soon turned to genuine curiosity for the history, the culture, and the creatures behind it. Whatever their people thought of their old masters, the illithids were prolific in their own right and their skills could be useful if given the right direction. A circular point of fascination for young Xa'rok was the intersection between their two peoples, a history paved in servitude and blood but which ultimately led to the current state of their race, psionics and all. If the gith of the now were a byproduct of illithid tampering-- what could the gith and illithids achieve if they were to work together to further one goal? What if there could be trade between them, a way to share knowledge and skills for the betterment of both species, to compromise instead of kill on sight?
Their interest narrowed and their appetite for any scrap of knowledge to these ends grew. It was easy, at first, to pass off their fascination as a war general's dedication to the enemies' habits and movements, so as to better best them one day in combat. They had to know the shape and size and interior schematics of the Nautiloids-- to better navigate their corridors should they ever find themselves aboard one, of course. To know what they could of an illthid's biology-- to better find their weak spots, not because they had so many questions about the similarities between their form and that of the ghaiks, on whether the similarities ended superficially, or if their psionic power came from the same place; if the divergence of their ability to reproduce was a byproduct of shaping the earlier forms of their kin to better fit the illithid image; if they were for all intents and purposes the forerunners of a new illithid race, a project that was terminated prematurely with the gith liberation.
Their questions and curiosity grew until they were too pointed to be explained away. They began to get ideas, ideas their superiors didn't like--and worse, ideas they spoke about to others. They were an effective speaker, someone who was easy to listen to and easier still to agree with, as they made their points clearly and with passion, backed up with facts. And the gith of their creche valued knowledge above all but their silver swords. Their fascination was tolerated as a quirk when it was sought in defense of their people, but this new line of thinking was dangerously close to collusion. There was nothing to be gained from working with the illithids but another future of servitude under cruel masters and this time there was no Gith to save them.
Xa'rok lore (abridged version)
In the end, they were exiled. They had barely hit their 20th year before being given the ultimatum. They were portaled to the middle of the tundra and left with nothing but the clothes on their back and what little they carried, to starve or freeze. Their choice of exile was a mercy from a soft-hearted mentor, for they had been trained in such scenarios many times as a yank, and death was not a guarantee. Left to the mercy of the elements instead of run through with a superiors' sword, they actually had a fighting chance.
They survived the trial, though they were told by the departing gish that should they make it back alive they would no longer be welcomed in by the creche and there were standing orders to annihilate them should they return within the bounds of their former home. Their name was stricken from the rosters of the faithful, and they were branded h'shar'lak.
It was a relief to be cut free.
For a little over ten years they traveled the Sword Coast once they made it safely out of the Spine and followed their whims and passions without the threat of their superiors breathing down their neck.
(above links do a better brief job of explaining the lore from here on out, but they contact the Society of Brilliance once they learn about it and plan to meet up with a renegade illithid in their midst who is most willing to speak to them -- they get snatched by the Nautiloid before making contact, and thus the plot of BG3 unfolds.)
As I've finished their game since writing the various above threads, they do turn full illithid, but while partial illithidom suited them admirably and they took to it with aplomb, the actual transformation and re-learning themself as a new creature as a full illithid is a painful and arduous process that far exceeds the instantaneous transformation in-game. Thanks to the influence of the Astral tadpole, which unlike the others, was not part of the Absolute's brood, and which took root far more strongly than the first or third, they retained most of their former self -- to the detriment of the illithid they were becoming. Eventually they find their feet again, and travel the Astral sea and beyond--to Limbo, to the Underdark, to the myriad dark places where the likeminded share their larger goal of collaboration--and do the thankless, impossible work of trying to unite historic enemies twice over (the illithids, the githyanki, the githzerai) under one banner for the betterment of all. They establish a sister society to the society of brilliance in the astral plane and operate largely from there -- though they pop back into the material plane every few months to visit the Emperor in Baldur's Gate and renew ties with their allies and friends in cities across Faerûn.
Ironically, I wasn't aware there was an ending in which Lae'zel essentially does the same thing only without the illithid component. I somehow didn't think the githzerai would come up again at all, and Ambassador seems to be a popular choice of post-game occupation for most gith who aren't still singularly devoted to Vlaakith, but this has been Xa'rok's story since their inception in my brain and so it will remain. They were built upon two main character influences: Genly Ai of Ursula K. Le Guin's The Left Hand of Darkness, who is a human envoy on a frozen planet caught in the middle of a civil war while trying to broker political and economic ties to a larger federation that will share resources and knowledge with all parties for the betterment of all involved; and Newt Geiszler from Pacific Rim, whose fascination with the kaiju ultimately ends with him mind-melding with one. Really internalizing your passions, here. They were built to be a solo Emperor romancer, so the illithid-sympathies were a given, everything else spun out of these three concepts.
Skaro, their guardian, is a githzerai with deeper ties to the lore, but I've also turned him into a character in his own right divorced from the Emperor's reimagining of him as the guardian. I'm still working on what the AU of their life is like, where they meet as traveling companions once tadpoled and both remain gith in the end.
There is also an offshoot of Xa'rok's ending in game where they choose to give the Emperor the stones and don't turn illithid themself, and thus they part ways at the dock once the fight is over, but remain close contacts and allies.
Sometime after all is said and done, down the line, Xa'rok finds and raises a displacer beast cub who they name D'jaxia. She accompanies them on their diplomatic missions in the astral sea. In their canon ending, where they turn illithid and remain with the Emperor, the two are often apart, as the Emperor is content to remain in Baldur's Gate rebuilding his influence within the knights of the shield and Xa'rok is busy with their ambassador work elsewhere. But they return to drag the Emperor out of his work and take a break on occasion.

Introduction
Crises are unpredictable, and financial security might be thrown off control during critical circumstances. A car title loan could be a good way to get the money you need fast in these situations. Car title loans for emergencies can assist in filling up your financial gaps, whether related to urgent medical bills, house repairs, or additional costs. However, it is crucial to understand when to use this loan and, if required, look into other options.
What is a Car Title Loan?
You will use the vehicle as an asset to borrow money with an auto title loan. You are still able to use your automobile during this time, but the lender will keep the title until you pay back the loan. Since many lenders do not demand a credit check, it is a quick fix for people in need of money right away, especially those with bad credit.
Common Uses:
Emergency car title loan options are popular for medical bills, home repairs, or other urgent expenses that cannot wait.
When to Use a Car Title Loan for an Emergency
1. Urgent Medical Bills
If you have unexpected medical expenses and no other quick sources of funds, a car title loan for emergencies can help you get immediate relief. For those who don't qualify for other types of loans, such as personal loans or credit cards, car title loans offer fast access to cash.
2. Home Repairs
Major home repairs, such as fixing a roof or plumbing, can’t be delayed. In such cases, using car title loans for urgent expenses like home maintenance can prevent further damage and higher costs down the road.
3. Vehicle Repairs
If your car breaks down and you need immediate repairs to get to work or manage other responsibilities, emergency funding with car title loans can provide the quick cash you need to fix the vehicle.
4. Urgent Travel or Relocation
Sometimes, personal emergencies like family matters or urgent relocations require you to travel quickly. Fast car title loans for urgent needs offer quick funding for emergencies like these when other loan options are not available.
How to Get a Car Title Loan for Emergencies
Step-by-Step Guide
Find a Lender: Start by finding a reputable lender that offers online Texas title loan service if you're in Texas, or local services in your area such as Miami.
Submit Your Application: Most lenders offer an easy title loan online quote that lets you know how much you can borrow.
Get a Quote: After your application, you’ll receive a title loan quote online based on your vehicle’s value.
Provide Required Documents: You'll need your car title, proof of income (if required), and identification documents.
Get Your Funds: Once approved, you can get the funds as soon as the same day, depending on the lender.
Tip: You can also apply for title loans that don’t require the car in some states, meaning you keep possession of your vehicle even while the lender holds the title.
What You Need for a Car Title Loan
To get a car title loan, you typically need:
Vehicle title: The lender will hold this as collateral.
Proof of income: Some lenders offer car title loans with no income verification near me, but others may require proof.
Proof of residency: A utility bill or similar document to verify your address.
Valid ID: A government-issued ID like a driver’s license.
Other Considerations:
If your car is not paid off, some lenders still offer title loans on cars not paid off, but it depends on the loan amount and vehicle’s value.
Alternatives to Car Title Loans for Emergencies
While car title loans offer quick cash, they often come with higher interest rates and short repayment periods. It's important to explore alternatives to car title loans for emergencies before committing.
1. Personal Loans
Personal loans from banks or online lenders may offer lower interest rates and longer repayment terms. If you have bad credit, bad credit loans in Baton Rouge or your local area may be worth considering.
2. Credit Cards
If you have available credit, using a credit card may be a better option for urgent expenses since it often comes with lower interest rates compared to a car title loan.
3. Home Equity Loans
If you own a home, tapping into your home’s equity could provide more substantial funding at a lower interest rate. However, this takes longer to process compared to car title loans.
4. Refinancing a Car Loan
If you're wondering, "Can I get a title loan with a financed car?" the answer is often yes, but refinancing your current auto loan may also be an option to free up funds.
How Fast Can You Get a Car Title Loan?
The fast process of approval is one of the main reasons individuals choose auto title loans in times of need. Online title loans are an attractive option for those in need of money right away since they may be approved and funded on the same day.

How to Find Dealerships That Donate Cars Near Me
Are you wondering how to find dealerships that donate cars near you? You're not alone. Many people seek ways to give back while also benefiting from generous programs offered by local car dealerships. Whether you're looking for a way to support veterans, aid individuals with disabilities, or just want to contribute to your community, donating a vehicle can be an excellent option. This guide will help you navigate the process and connect with the right organizations dedicated to making a difference through car donations. Let's explore how you can take part in this meaningful initiative!
Donation Request in Kennesaw, GA
If you're in Kennesaw, GA, and looking to make a difference through car donations, you’re in the right place. Local dealerships often partner with charities to facilitate donation requests for vehicles. This not only helps those in need but also supports community initiatives. To get started, reach out to nearby dealerships or organizations that accept vehicle donations. They can guide you on how to submit your request and what information is needed. Engaging with these local programs ensures your contribution goes directly toward helping those who truly benefit from it.
Vehicle Donation Program Information
Many dealerships participate in vehicle donation programs that support various charitable organizations. These programs allow you to donate your car, truck, or SUV while making a positive impact on the community. When you choose to donate through a dealership, they often handle all paperwork and logistics for you. This means less hassle and more convenience as your generous contribution can help fund essential services for those in need. Whether it’s providing transportation or supporting local initiatives, every donation counts toward meaningful change.
Eligibility Criteria for Vehicle Donations
To donate a vehicle, you typically need to own it outright. This means having the title free of any liens or loans. Dealerships may require proof of ownership before accepting your donation. Additionally, the vehicle should generally be in working condition. However, some charities accept non-operational cars as well. It's essential to check with specific dealerships or organizations for their unique eligibility criteria and requirements before proceeding with your donation journey.
Donating to Support Veterans and People with Disabilities
Donating your vehicle can make a significant impact on the lives of veterans and people with disabilities. Many organizations focus on providing essential services and support to these groups, often relying heavily on car donations to fund their programs. Your contribution can facilitate transportation for medical appointments or job interviews, greatly enhancing their quality of life. When you choose to donate, you're not just giving away an old car; you're empowering individuals who face unique challenges every day. It's a way to show appreciation for their sacrifices and help foster independence through mobility solutions that truly matter.
Process of Donating Your Vehicle
Donating your vehicle is a straightforward process. Start by researching local dealerships and charitable organizations that accept car donations. Once you identify a suitable option, reach out to them for specific instructions. Next, prepare your vehicle for donation. Gather necessary documents like the title and registration, ensuring everything is in order. Many organizations will handle paperwork on their end, making it easier for you. After arranging the pickup or drop-off date, enjoy the satisfaction of knowing your vehicle will support a worthy cause in your community.
Car Donation Tax Deduction Information
When you donate a car, it can provide significant tax benefits. The IRS allows donors to claim a deduction based on the vehicle's fair market value at the time of donation. This means that your charitable contribution could significantly reduce your taxable income. However, it's essential to keep proper documentation. You'll need a receipt from the charity and possibly an appraisal if the vehicle is worth more than $5,000. Understanding these requirements can help maximize your tax deduction while ensuring compliance with tax regulations.
Support Local Communities Through Car Donations
Car donations extend far beyond individual benefits; they have a profound impact on local communities. When you donate your vehicle, the proceeds often support essential programs like food banks, shelters, and education initiatives. These contributions help address critical needs within your community. Moreover, dealerships that participate in donation programs frequently collaborate with local charities. This partnership maximizes the impact of each donation. By supporting these efforts, you're not only giving back but also fostering a stronger sense of community and solidarity among your neighbors. Every car donated makes a difference in someone’s life.
How to apply for getting dealership that donate cars
Finding a dealership that donates cars can be straightforward if you know where to look. Start by researching local dealerships in your area that have community outreach programs or partnerships with charities. Websites and social media platforms are great resources for identifying these initiatives. Once you've identified potential dealerships, reach out directly. Inquire about their donation processes and any specific requirements they may have. Engaging with them early helps clarify the details, ensuring you're well-informed as you navigate through this rewarding journey of giving back.
Application process and Documentation
To apply for a vehicle donation, start by gathering essential documents. You’ll need the vehicle's title, proof of ownership, and identification. Some organizations may also ask for maintenance records or details about the car’s condition. Once you have everything ready, fill out the application form provided by the dealership or charity. Ensure all information is accurate to avoid delays in processing your donation. After submitting your application, be prepared for any follow-up questions that could arise during their review process.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for vehicle donations, you typically need to own a car that is in fair condition or better. This means the vehicle should run and have no major structural issues. Some programs may accept non-running cars, but it's essential to check their specific requirements. Additionally, most dealerships require that you provide clear ownership documentation. This includes your title and registration details. Having these documents ready can streamline the donation process and ensure a smooth transaction with the dealership of your choice.
Conclusion
Finding dealerships that donate cars near you can transform lives. By donating, you're not just clearing space in your driveway; you're supporting local communities and giving a second chance to those in need. Engage with organizations that align with your values, whether it’s helping veterans or individuals with disabilities. Title Loans That Don’t Require the Car: Your Guide to Getting Fast Cash | usacartitleloans
Understanding Title Loans Without the Car
Title loans are typically secured by the title of your vehicle, which means you usually need to hand over the title to the lender as collateral. However, there are specific scenarios and lenders where you might not need to provide the car itself.
Can I Get a Title Loan with a Financed Car?
Yes, it is possible to get a title loan with a financed car, but it may be more complex. Most title loan lenders require that you own the vehicle outright. If you still owe money on your car, the lender will need to work with your current lender to clear the lien. This might involve paying off part of the loan or negotiating terms with both lenders.
Car Title Loans with No Income Verification Near Me
For those worried about income verification, car title loans with no income verification can be a viable option. Some lenders offer loans based on the value of your car rather than your income. These loans are particularly useful for individuals with bad credit or those who are self-employed and have irregular income. To find lenders near you offering this type of loan, search online for “car title loans with no income verification near me” or check local listings.
Online Title Loans for Bad Credit
If you have bad credit, securing a traditional loan can be challenging. Fortunately, online title loans offer a way to get the funds you need without a credit check. Many lenders specialize in providing title loans to individuals with poor credit histories. The application process is usually quick and straightforward, allowing you to get approval and funds fast. You can find these loans by searching for online Title Loans for Bad Credit and comparing different lenders’ terms.
Can You Pawn Your Car?
Pawning your car involves using it as collateral for a loan, similar to a title loan. The key difference is that with a pawn loan, you might not need to hand over the title right away. Instead, the lender may hold onto the car itself while you repay the loan. This can be an option if you need immediate cash and are willing to leave the car with the lender until the loan is repaid.
Title Loans Online Fast
For those who need cash urgently, online title loans can provide a quick solution. The process typically involves filling out an application online, submitting necessary documents (like the car title), and getting approval in a matter of hours. To find lenders offering fast title loans online, search for terms like “title loans online fast” to identify services that can meet your immediate needs.
Car Loans for Rebuilt Titles
If your car has a rebuilt title, it can be more challenging to secure a loan. A rebuilt title indicates that the vehicle was previously declared a total loss and has since been repaired. Lenders might view these vehicles as higher risk, which could result in higher interest rates or stricter terms. However, some lenders specialize in car loans for rebuilt titles. Search for “car loans for rebuilt titles” to find lenders willing to work with these types of vehicles.
Bad Credit Loans in Baton Rouge
For residents of Baton Rouge, securing a loan with bad credit can be especially daunting. Fortunately, there are lenders who offer bad credit loans specifically for individuals in this area. If you’re looking for a loan and have poor credit, you might want to explore local options by searching for “bad credit loans in Baton Rouge” to find lenders who can provide assistance.

Can I Get a Loan for a Salvage Title Car | Titleloansonline
A salvage title car is a vehicle that has been deemed a total loss by an insurance company, usually after an accident. While obtaining a traditional loan for a salvage title car may be challenging, there are still loan options available for those in need of cash. In this article, we’ll explore how you can secure financing for a salvage title car and alternative loan options.
Will a Bank Finance a Rebuilt or Salvage Title Car?
Most traditional banks are hesitant to finance rebuilt title or salvage title vehicles due to the higher risks involved. A car with a salvage title typically indicates extensive repairs or damage, which can lower the car's resale value. However, this doesn’t mean you’re out of options—alternative lenders, such as title loan companies, may still approve your application.
Can You Get a Title Loan for a Salvage Title Car?
Yes, it’s possible to get a title loan for a salvage title car, especially if the vehicle has been repaired and is functioning. Car title loans use your vehicle as collateral, so if the car has been restored and has market value, lenders may approve a loan based on its current worth. Keep in mind that the loan amount will likely be lower than for a car with a clean title.
Title Loans Without the Car
Some lenders offer Title Loans That don't Require The Car to be physically inspected. This allows you to apply online and secure the loan remotely, making the process faster and more convenient.
Fast Online Title Loans for Salvage Title Cars
If you need cash quickly, fast online title loans may be a good option. These loans allow you to submit your application and documents online, providing you with rapid approval and disbursement, even for salvage title cars.
Can I Get a Title Loan with a Financed Car?
It’s possible to get a title loan with a financed car if the lender is willing to work with your existing financing. In this case, the lender may pay off the existing balance and offer a loan based on the remaining equity in the vehicle.
Alternative Loan Options for Salvage Title Cars
If a title loan isn’t the right fit, you can consider other loan types, such as bad credit loans in Baton Rouge or car loans for rebuilt titles. These options can help you secure financing, even with a lower credit score or a salvage title.
Car Title Loans with No Income Verification Near Me
If you're worried about income verification, some lenders offer car title loans with no income verification. This can be helpful if you’re self-employed or have irregular income. You can still get approved for a loan based on your vehicle’s value.
Can You Pawn Your Car for Cash?
Yes, you can essentially "pawn" your car by using its title as collateral to secure a loan. This allows you to get cash quickly while still keeping your car. Cash and title loans are ideal for those who need immediate funds without selling their vehicle.
Approved Title Loans in Texas
For residents of Texas, approved title loans in Texas are available, even for salvage title cars. These loans provide a quick and easy way to secure funds, especially if you're facing financial emergencies.
Conclusion
Although it can be more challenging to get a loan for a salvage title car, it’s still possible through alternative lenders and title loans. Whether you need cash quickly or have a rebuilt title, there are flexible options available to help you. Explore the possibilities with Title Loans Online to find the best loan for your situation.
