Summer Homework: Current News Story
The story of the homework is based on a current news. It is a challenge to me because I rarely play and make animated film with news since the days people got breakdown because of COVID-19.
This topic aim to allow us to step out of our comfort zone on making animations. I have reviewed the works I made last year and found I made digital animations a lot. This is a kind of inertia, because it is very convinient that I use iPad to draw and I can making films everywhere.
Therefore, I decided to return to my original intention. The first step is reviewing the first animation I made in my foundation year at Middlesex, which is a flipbook animation about a fisherman and a big wave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I made that film with markers, and I am satisfied with the colour and the way to show the film with flipbook.
I do have another blank flipbook and ready to use. Making a flipbook is more tiring than a digital animated film, which means I can no longer copy and paste an existing layer. However, I like making animation traditionally and very enjoy it, so obviously I will try flipbook this time.
Now that the medium of production has been decided, the next step is to choose the subject matter of the story. It is a recent news story, but in my expectation it needed to resonate with me and the audience.
So I started looking for interesting articles on various online news sites. Soon, I noticed the article I needed in The Guardian News Online.
First story: A homeless man suspected of shoplifting
The story is telling about a man was accused of stealing in a supermarket. It shows unfair truth to homeless people and citizens at the bottom of society. Surrounding the article I made up more contents for my film, because there are many details that were not explained clearly in the original story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the help of the script, I quickly designed the characters in the story. It includes the protagonist who looks haggard and has stubble on his face.
Tumblr media
And other characters......
Tumblr media
Also, I recorded the initial ideas of colour, especially the numbers for each markers I will use. Which help me a lot when I do colouring works. some notes about the story are also there, including teaser of the main story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally I made a storyboard based on my script. Now is the time to start making the filpbook.
Tumblr media
Outcome - Flipbook Film
I shot the film with my phone (Stop Motion Studio) and edit with Premier Pro. The film including flipbook (Traditional way), digital part (Modern way) and even I made a scene props with tea bag box and a fan with ice cream sticks. Which allow me to shot in a interesting high angle.
Tumblr media
Second Story: Double Winner
The second story is more positive, reduced nervous and serious feeling on first story and mainly based on the sticker event that McDonald's currently doing.
Because I am currently in love with collecting the stickers of that event and I really interested on the way differently and creatively that McDonald's doing with their business.
The stickers are basically will appear on almost every food packages and you might get vouchers from the sticker that can be redeemed instantly for free food as well as grand prize vouchers will require collecting all the pieces.
People tend to be more willing to collect food rewards from the former than the latter. They are normally easier to obtain.
Tumblr media
Back to the story. At the beginning A homeless man is begging for money from people passing by. He is starving and exhausting, and feeling dizzy. Until a young man passing by, and pulled him to help him stand up. The man begged the young man for change, and the young man offered to take him to a feast. They went direct to the McDonald's, but the homeless man looking at his dirty hands, he didn't dare to go in.
Later, the young man arranged for the homeless man to be seated inside the restaurant. The man was so hungry that he picked up the burger and ate it regardless of his dirty hands. There were tears in the corners of his eyes, and his face was filled with gratitude.
Seeing that he was engaged in eating, the young man left the restaurant. When the man realizes he is alone in a busy restaurant, he becomes uneasy and disoriented. It seemed like the people around to be whispering, looking at his dirty appearance and his shabby clothes.
After clearing away the remains of the food on the table and putting the packaging boxes into paper bags, the man just wanted to leave the place quickly. He went to the trash can and wanted to throw them away, then realized the stickers were there.
He peeled off the sticker on the package, and his expression changed.
The next moment, the perspective comes to another beggar. People walked past him indifferently, as if they didn't notice him. Afterwards, a man's figure arrived and handed the beggar a piece of hot food. Facing the beggar's thanks, the man finally smiled.
You're welcome, we all have difficult times.

Two more frames!
There's this section of script coming up that I want to work on, but also, two more frames and this week's upload will be ready! Gosh, I am not doing good on my graphic novel buffer. For a while there, I was just bored of coloring. There's not that much to it: Letter, line, fill, texture, rinse, repeat. So it felt like I was going through frames too fast.
But now that I've rested on coloring, it's time to really strive to build up my queue. I really want to be able to release whole issues earlier and earlier before issues go live. Plus, the more issues there are for someone to purchase, maybe the more likely they'll be to at least binge the whole thing and give me a ton of views; and at the most, maybe they'll purchase a couple issues.
Not to mention, I need material to put into my artist books.
I kinda just want to skip clean pencil and inking for now and just do rough pencils--maybe till the end of the volume. I'm really curious how many pages that would be. I definitely could just skip clean pencil for now--I certainly have more than enough frames to color...... three issues, over four hundred frames........I kinda wish I could afford a colorist; I feel like that's the only real way I'll catch up to myself in any reasonable time, if there are two of us doing coloring. But then I'd have to provide a million color swatches for the coming scenes and at that rate, an assistant would only really be good for filling and shading. Which is more than nothing. Maybe they could also help with inking and scanning....... those are pretty rote tasks......... Basically, I'm too much of a control freak. Plus, how would they ink in the same sketchbook I'm penciling in? I'd have to trade sketchbooks and that would get messy real fast.
Speaking of which, I did not quite finish gessoing sketchbook #1 this past weekend. But I should easily finish on Saturday. Then I can iron it down, glue back in the pages I tore out, and hopefully quickly make short work of what remains. And finally sketchbook #1 will be behind me!
After I finish sketchbook #3..........I think I'll use a section of the concertina waterfall sketchbook first and the face-to-face sketchbook next and another chunk of the concertina sketchbook. Maybe by then, five years from now, I'll have finished the pineapple sketchbook...........and made stacks of normal, regular sketchbooks.
Although....... honestly, I really ought to make more multi-block bindings. In smaller scale, I find them fun. To make, at least. Maybe I'll try other sizes and scales of book; I definitely have to try concertina again. And multi-block dos-a-dos. And maybe different kinds of waterfall-like cards. That almost filpbook-like effect is something that I've been looking to perfect. I want more of a left-to-right flip though.

18, 26 and 30 for the art asks, Sunny!
HEY LOVE THANKS FOR THE ASK!
18. What are you currently trying to improve on?
Well, this isn't really art related but it's affecting my art itself. I'm trying to improve my self worth (and hopefully open up a red bubble or something this year).
I've been brought up in a household were selflessness is as common as breathing - it's the ultimate show of affection and respect. Yet, along the way I have somehow misconstrued selflessness with a 'lack of self' which is bad. This means my self worth is almost non-existent but through art and our awesome discord fam, I feel like I'm getting a little bit stronger.
And like, people actually somehow like my stuff??? So thanks to yall, imma open up a store haha.
26. For digital artists, what programs for you use?
I used to use Photoshop but the program is so big and you can only get so many subscriptions so I decided to change to Sketch Book Pro. Sure it's a much more limited software, but I don't need much. It has a filpbook capacity so I animate in it (and toon boom Harmony), as well as a normal canvas mode for art. It also has copics! Which is pretty cool. Oh! And it's all free too. :)
I draw with a Wacom intus pro that I hook up to my laptop (which is a Acer predator cause I needed something beefy for music mixing and 3D animation). But yeah, I'm simple.
30. I answered this one in a previous ask! 😘
Love you mate, have a good one!

Stefan Zeyen – MFILES (2017)
Tumblr media
It is in the darkness of the theater that the memories and dreams of a cinematic century were shaped. Today, they are stored on an infinity of infected hard drives, scratched DVDs, and more-or-less decomposed film strips around the globe. How should we preserve cinema’s scented corpse in the age of the poor image?
Please be advised: MFILES is a fox trap. It is the logical continuation of Stefan Zeyen’s investigation into the architecture of storytelling. But here, the artist reverses one of cinema’s oldest stunts: to transform disconnected space into cinematic time. Each flip book amounts to one take of Fritz Lang’s M, arranged in chronological order. At the back of a minimalist black shelf, the motion of the shots is tracked on the books edges. Both Muybridge – an ironed and folded one – and the Marey battalions get their due. Open or closed, we find in the MFILES the origins of cinema playfully reconciled. Time is, as Henri Bergson would put it, missing – all over again.
Zeyen gives a three-dimensional body to cinema’s early deceit, and he does so by choosing Lang’s first sound film, which makes the archive mischievous from the start. In M sound is performative, bridging intervals, always one step ahead of its images. The children’s chant foresees the plot, a blind man discovers the serial killer, the beggars’ whistles encircle him, and it is the noise of a nail tapping that gets him caught. Along the filmic timeline, Lang explores a place, 1920s Berlin, its eradication of the subhuman (played by an outlandish Peter Lorre), and the eventual return to societal order. By dissecting the sequences and abstracting the audio from the visual stream, Zeyen spatializes narration. The payoff is lost. All that remains are floating images; the anatomy of a pre-fascist society with a pending diagnosis. MFILES’ Berlin may be easily manipulated, re-ordered, deconstructed, and reconstructed by the viewer-becoming-user. Once the menace of the Beast has disappeared in the intervals, we might find other narratives to be drawn. Yet the film may also remain as a distant memorial, finding solace within the white walls of some honorable institution. Isn’t it the afterlife of every self-respecting archive?
In this work, Zeyen creates a de-plotted sculpture of M, a treacherous swan song to cinema, and a political archive – one pregnant with its own forgetfulness. While museums develop all sorts of cutting-edge artifices to care for film’s newly acquired nobility and its hopeless obsolescence, Stefan Zeyen erects a monument to its old tricks. After all, Peter Lorre could not whistle – those are the mismatches that give cinema its continuing relevance.

Trabajo Practico N°11 - Filpbook.

We read this assignment for the first time, we ignored one important condition which was that the work should be relevant to the media. So after our first cursory reading, we naturally think of all kinds of works, such as the claw machine, pinball machine which were all toy types. When we reviewed the assignment over the weekend, we realized what we were supposed to do. We proposed several ideas about multimedia, such as projectors, stereos and other common high technology products. However,  they were so easy to make and we all considered that it was better to make a product that was both common and challenging.  Finally, we decided to make a simple version of television that was filpbook animation machine.
