Assignment (part 1) - Film Production Design

Logline:

5 first year university friends go camping along the coast but when best friends Ben and Matthew go swimming in the Forth after having too many drinks the Scottish estuary doesn’t show mercy.

Synopsis

Best friends Ben and Matthew have just finished their first year of university and go on a camping trip with their 3 flatmates. All of them having a blast expecting to start off their summer with a joyful and peaceful trip away from the city. Getting setup, they make it down to the beach to enjoy BBQ and drinks. Crowded round a fire telling stories from freshers and funny nights out, spirits are higher than ever. Ben who’s spent the majority of his first-year drinking and scraping through his course decides to introduce some drinking games. Time passes on and many games later everyone is feeling the drinks and drunken confidence and adventure is through the roof. Ben suggests going for a short night swim, most of the group are reluctant due to the cold but Matthew being his best friend agrees. Messing around in the shallows and feeling the freezing shock of the Scottish estuary gives them the thrill they were looking for. Yet they continue to push the limits, swimming out to a bright orange buoy. Underestimating the current of the Forth by the time they make it halfway they’re both taken into a rip that sweeps them out to a point invisible to the beach. Two bodies are found 3 miles apart the next day.

Statement of intent

The intentions of this film are to show the dangers of water safety and the potential damage and hurt it can cause. This is an issue that I’ve learnt about coming from background of water sports, and I think it’s important to spread awareness about it as people still die ever year from underestimating bodies of water, in this instance The River Forth. From my knowledge I’m yet to see a film that tackles this issue directly, there have been powerful adverts from the RNLI but nothing that stays with the viewer. This film would be a new area of filmmaking that I think could be explored further. I believe that adding a strong narrative to the subject of drowning and water safety will help people think differently about their actions around water. I also think that using characters at the age of late teens will help relate to audience that are most likely to be involved in these incidents. With this film I want people to remember it when they’re put in a similar situation and understand the consequences it has. Telling the tragic story in the hope that it will encourage people to ask questions about how to avoid these situations and also recover from them.

12 years ago when I was more a generalist Digital Artist I spent 6 months modeling, planet fluid sim, asteroid field dynamics, lighting and rendering for the film "Zathura" This small sequence of shots took me 6 months to complete.
