I'm archiving my earliest images so get ready for a lot of early 2000's amateur shots.

This is the last frame from my second roll of film. I never would have though twice about this image, except now it has, to me, exemplified the Susan Sontag quote that is the basis of this blog: "Time eventually positions most photographs, even the most amateurish, at the level of art."

This was taken during a high school concert band trip to New York City, which was ostensibly to play some patriotic songs at the United Nations (outside the building), but also, it was shortly after 9/11, and therefore we drove past ground zero (not sure if I want to post that image?), visited Ellis Island and the statue of Liberty, in hindsight a very patriotic trip, but mostly we were just enjoying being teenagers in NYC, some 200 miles from our parents and families, for two days.

The thing about this photo is that it is truly awful. I was genuinely trying to take a photo of the Empire State building because I couldn't believe I was seeing it in person, and yet, this photo, instead, honestly captured the banality of early 2000's life, or maybe just how I perceived it, anyway, as a teenager.

I guess a new rule for this blog is that worse the photo is, the longer an essay will accompany it.
