“You can come in now.” Oboro made an attempt to rough up her clothes, to look as though she’d changed in a hurry, having to hide her handiwork.
She turned her head towards the door of the guest room, tucking away a small hand-carved tablet into a drawer, it was a gift she had been working on, a small memorial tablet. Oboro didn’t want to show Miles just yet, after all, the topic of his birth father was a sensitive subject for the prince, but based on what she’d been learning about Gregory, he didn’t seem to be the boogeyman Miles had made him out to be.
Just as much as her knowledge of Makellos’ history and Gregory’s story grew, so too had her... feelings for Miles. It had been awkward, especially with how she had been chased from Hoshido by that bitch Maria.

“Sorry milord, I was just changing clothes. I was playing with lady Franziska earlier and you know how kids are, they just gotta play in the dirt.”

Sometimes I think about Hinoka teaching Oboro the ways of the naginata…

Note
please keep going?
The Hoshidofam's genotype is Pegasus; Sakura and Ryouma share it as their secondary class and it's Hinoka's primary class. It's even Aqua's secondary class, showing the influence the Hoshido family had on her (this is why it's Shigure's base class and most likely why he has a Hoshidan name)
The outlier is, of course, perennial black sheep Takumi
Although Hinoka's promoted class can wield bows, she starts as a basic Pegasus Warrior--meaning that, unlike Camilla, it was never even imagined that Hinoka would try to claim the Fujin Yumi. The Conquest epilogue solidifies this; Hinoka only became queen when all male relatives were dead
Hinoka most likely picked Pegasus Warrior to train as because it's the ideal class for rescuing someone; fly in, fly out. Her secondary is also Spear Master, meaning that she's always naginata-focused; the naginata is often linked with women because it was a popular choice of wives defending households
The second is likely the same reason Oboro is a Spear Master. Oboro's secondary class, Apothecary, lets her access the closest thing Fates has to a Merchant class :')
Shinonome, on the third hand, is a Spear Master because it gets WTA over his father because he's a dick like that
The Kamuisexuals all have two extra classes, all representing different parts of their character
Ashura: Axe Fighter, a thuggish class that's Nohrian through-and-through, and Ninja, his original class in Kouga
Yukimura: Samurai and Priest, the base classes of Sumeragi and Mikoto, who he sees as parent figures
Yuugiri: Spellcaster to represent her close friendship with Orochi and Ninja because she was originally Kagerou to represent her previous role as retainer
Crimson: Knight and Outlaw. Stalwart defender, but also rebel.
Anna: Apothecary, because merchant, and Rod Knight, because Tricksters used staves in Awakening
Flora: Dark Mage and Mercenary, a nod to her being your enemy and changing sides. Incidentally, Felicia (who betrays Nohr) also has Mercenary. If a Buddy Seal is used, Felicia gains access to Dark Mage from Flora and Flora gets no benefit whatsoever. Just like real life :')
Izana: Samurai and Apothecary. He's a hard guy to get a handle on, but I think Samurai is supposed to represent his surprising fortitude (it's Ryouma's class, after all) and Apothecary how he's high as fuck his somewhat mercenary nature (staying neutral in the war)
Gunther: Mercenary and Wyvern Rider. Another betrayer.
Fuuga: Oni and Monk, a simple showing that he's a fierce fighter with a benevolent side. Incidentally, his base class is Samurai--that of his old friend, Sumeragi
Joker's Cavalier secondary represents his grudging affection for Gunther
Most children have their father's class set, occasionally with primary and secondary reversed (ie Leon is Dark Mage/Rod Knight and Foleo is Rod Knight/Dark Mage). Midoriko, Shinonome, and Lutz are the only oddballs
All three routes of Fates have differently-colored menu windows; Nohr and Hoshido disagree so much that they won't share something as fundamental as a text box
Ditto different promotion themes
All Hoshidan classes are written in kanji; all Nohrian classes are written in katakana, even if FE usually writes it in kanji (ie Mercenary), to represent how foreign the lands are to each other
My personal favorite example of how sharp this division feels is with Kamui's promoted class options; they're 白の血族 (lit White Blood, maybe localized to Dawn's Bloodline/Descendant) and ダークブラッド (Dark Blood, maybe Dusk's Descendant). Even if you can't read any Japanese, the shapes are just viscerally different
Fuuga, Flora, and Rinkah are all scions of their clans, represented by their similar ability names; Wind Blood, Ice Blood, and Fire Blood
Felicia, on the other hand, is loyal to Kamui first even though she's the favored daughter, and to represent that she's part of a skill family with Joker and Gunther instead

Analysis
Between sky-high Atk, guaranteed doubles, dual-type effective damage, and the ability to increase movement, Duo!Ephraim takes the cake as one of the most powerful melee threats in FEH.
A vast majority of D!Ephraim’s potency can be attributed to Reginleif, as it provides multiple effects perfect for D!Ephraim’s role. By providing him with guaranteed follow-up attacks, he can make the most of his high damage without having to rely on high Spd. Meanwhile, effectiveness against armored enemies makes it far easier for Ephraim to ORKO bulky armors he may otherwise struggle with, and while cavalry units generally aren’t too bulky, dealing effective damage makes for less risky fights regardless. Having cooldown reduction is also always a welcome bonus.
By increasing his movement, D!Ephraim’s Duo Skill also helps him initiate from safer distances and can be especially helpful if using Galeforce or dancers, as his extended movement can then be utilized with every action that turn. It also serves as solid support in the rare case that D!Ephraim can’t engage or if being used as an Arena core team unit.
Needless to say, D!Ephraim outclasses a number of pre-existing lance units, notably the default Ephraim: Restoration Lord, whose Siegmund is really only capable providing guaranteed doubles, lacking the additional bonuses of D!Ephraim in addition to having inferior stats overall. D!Ephraim even boasts workable Def, only 1 less than that of Lukas: Sharp Soldier, a unit known for his exceptional defensive potential. If desired, D!Ephraim can thus be built defensively in a similar manner to units like Lukas and perform virtually just as well; with Reginleif’s guaranteed doubles in either phase, D!Ephraim may even function much like a typical armored unit without the movement restriction.
D!Ephraim prefers a boon/asset in Atk (superboon). His preferred banes/flaws are Spd (superbane), HP (superbane), and Res.

Builds
Budget/Low Investment:
Ephraim’s base kit functions perfectly with Ephraim’s niche and does not require any changes. Heavy Blade 4 both allows for more frequent Special activations and true damage per hit. Though Glimmer is normally more applicable than Draconic Aura, pairing a 2-cooldown Special with a -1 CD weapon makes Special acceleration from Heavy Blade redundant. Luna or Sol are other Special options to be considered, the former for getting through high defenses and the latter for sustaining Ephraim as he already deals high damage anyway without Specials. Lull Atk/Def and Odd Atk Wave further decrease the odds of his opponents being able to tank his hits. Using Chill Def makes it easier for Ephraim and his allies to fight high-Def enemies, though any Sacred Seal capable of increasing his damage output will serve him greatly, ideally focusing on the player phase.
Ephraim can also use Desperation to initiate without the danger of taking counterattacks. Death Blow and Sturdy Blow increase his Atk in the player phase by +10. Brazen skills can also be used to synergize with Desperation.
Player Phase:
As aforementioned, Galeforce is especially powerful on Ephraim, enabling him to take out multiple units per turn. As long as Ephraim lands two hits, Reginleif and Heavy Blade make it possible for him to fully charge and activate Galeforce in one combat. Since this build relies heavily on hitting twice, Null Follow-Up helps maintain consistency against enemies with skills that would otherwise deny Ephraim’s follow-ups. Although it may be strange, this also means that Ephraim should be careful not to do too much damage, as OHKO’s won’t activate Galeforce, so stacking up Ephraim’s damage output should be avoided with this buil, though he still needs high Atk to reliably pass both Reginleif and Heavy Blade’s Atk checks.
Ephraim’s incredible Atk can also be used for incredibly high damage with AoE Specials. Life and Death 4 maximizes Ephraim’s visible Atk for the Special’s damage to scale upon, while Special Spiral provides 2 cooldown charge after each use of the Special. As Reginleif reduces the cooldown to 3 and Ephraim will attack at least once after activating the AoE Special, this build thus makes the Special fully charged for every initiation after the first use. Hardy Bearing prevents enemies from retaliating with Vantage effects between the AoE damage and Ephraim’s actual hit.
Using Fury to inflict recoil damage can be effective in activating skills that rely on lower HP like Desperation and Brazens, both of which can make Ephraim that much more threatening. Wrath is another option for this playstyle and can even be paired with Noontime/Sol for sustain.
Enemy Phase:
By combining Distant Counter and Vantage, Ephraim can become significantly more difficult to deal with due to his high damage per hit, essentially forcing opponents to either OHKO/ORKO him or be able to tank a hit from him once he’s damaged, the latter being exceptionally difficult. A Brazen Sacred Seal makes him even harder to tank once within Vantage’s HP threshold.
Ephraim can also be used as a physical tank, stacking his Def with Steady Stance skills. Since Reginleif can take the place of Quick Riposte usually used with a build like this, Ephraim’s B Slot is left open and can be filled with a wide range of options, though his default Lull Atk/Def works fine and notably helps pass Reginleif’s Atk check. With Reginleif’s cooldown reduction, Ephraim can proc Ignis every fight assuming his opponent doubles and he can double back.
Arena Core:
The Duel effect provided with being a Duo Hero in addition to his movement buff from his Duo Skill makes Ephraim a prime option for the Arena. The skills shown in this build are chosen mostly for their SP costs and are flexible.

it always bothers me that they never translated the pun in Oboro’s epithet. she’s a “Fierce Fighter” because she’s both fashionable and ferocious, but in Spanish it’s just “Guerrera Feroz” (“fierce warrior” using a word for fierce without that connotation) and in Mandarin it’s “神情狂暴的” (“savage disposition”). Was this ever a pun to begin with?? am i just reading too far into this?
I just went and checked, and in Japanese she’s “魔王顔の” (“The One Who Makes The Demon King Face”) which is hilarious and I don’t blame them for being unable to easily translate that but It Does Not Answer My Question

Clans of Hoshido: Hiromi (広海)
Ryuurei Bay was home to once a humble fishing village, now a bustling port city after the rise of the Yamato clan during the period of the warring kingdoms. It was here in these rich blue waters where eons ago, the Dawn Dragon rested on his journey and defeated the colossal carp that terrorized the villagars, and centuries ago when the young and inexperienced Nobuyuki Yamato would seize his first victory against the Kamiya Clan.
The Kamiya had hoped to descend on the shores of Ryuurei Bay and capture Nobuyuki for their own gain, but the young lord refused to give up. With the help of the Hiromi clan, Nobuyuki had wooden stakes into the coast to prevent the Kamiya from entering the bay. Using the connection to the lands, Nobuyuki toppled the the Kamiya army by raising stone pillars, blocking reinforcements and utterly destroying the ships.
Reveling in their victory, Nobuyuki and his family declared the Yamato an official contender for the conquest of the east lands. The Hiromis were the first clan to join the Yamato in their war against the Amachi and the Kamiya, most notably daisuke . After the fight was done, Nobuyuki gave the Hiromis a large portion of land to call their own and also command of royal naval operations based in Ryuurei.
Today the Hiromis remain a major constant in Hoshidan politics and a stalwart ally of the royal clan of Yamato. Those wishing to learn the from the most skilled strategists travel to the Hiromi domain in the hopes of getting a glimpse of Daisuke Hiromi’s legendary treatises on military strategy. Two disciples from the Hiromi school of strategy now serve as the nation’s royal strategist and brought Hoshido three accounts of victory against the invading Nohrian forces.
Crest Design
Originally for the Hiromi crest, I was going to put a crab with gentian legs, because it would be funny to thinly veil how salty the brothers are, but decided against it because it’d sound like a one time only sort of thing. So I just went for something straightforward, just a fragment of the seigaha pattern (stylistic layered waves) because they live near the ocean and were primarily a fishing village before they expanded. At first I was planning on having a Five Colors theme pattern going on, but I didn’t want to change the pictures, so they’re stuck with teal.
Notable Members
Daisuke Hiromi - The strategist of Nobuyuki Yamato during the warring periods
Ichiro Hiromi - A brilliant strategist, although he lets his instincts drive his decisions compared to his rival and fellow mechanist Yukimura
Seiji Hiromi - A masterful spear master, and a firm believer in isolationism for Hoshido to preserve its glory
Saburo Hiromi - The youngest, and desperate for attention. He wants to distinguish himself by joining the Kinshi Knight Corps
Haitaka - a Hoshidan general fiercely loyal to Ichiro Hiromi
Fun Notes and Facts
Ichiro, Seiji and Saburo is an unsubtle hint to which on is older. Ichiro (一郎) is the oldest because he has the number one in his name. Seiji is number two (精二), and Saburo is third (三郎)
The Hiromi’s specialty is spear fighters, but it’s not as concrete as the other clans
The head, Ichiro, is a Basara
Seiji is a Spear Master
Saburo is the weird one who’s the Hoshidan Knight, but he’s still fighting with spears
They may be asshats, but you can’t deny that they are brothers who care for each other a lot.
They’re kinda in the same camp as Takumi in that you’d hate how annoying they are on a Nohr route, but they get their chance to be humanized in Birthright
Who knows, make Saburo marriageable or something
The three brothers don’t have spouses... yet
In reality, Ichiro’s heart belongs to Reina, but Reina isn’t really interested in marriage, so he’s being awfully patient
Seiji is quite content without a companion of any kind
Saburo is often very concerned about how his older brothers being single with no heir, so he feels pressured to marry someone himself
Saburo throws himself into any relationship he can take, which worries his brothers a lot and forces them to intervene
While the Hiromis are known to be the strategy specialists, they do have a dojo for spear users, where Oboro studied while under care of the Moriheis
Ichiro and Saburo are both avid players of go, which does go against their rough and tumble images a bit, while Seiji doesn’t exactly care for it
Go is like the one thing Ichiro Hiromi and Hisashi Amachi can do peacefully without any fistfight when they were kids
Ichiro plays against Yukimura once in a while as part of their rivalry, and are currently running a tie
The Morihei have similar origins to the Hiromi, except the Hiromi have been around a lot longer than Morihei
The two clans get along extremely well, so Hinata and Oboro have some friends or two from Hiromi
By extension, Takumi knows Saburo pretty well, although it’s arguable how close they are
The Ryuurei Bay is based off of Vịnh Hạ Long, a bay in North Vietnam
As you can tell, it’s got everything to do with dragons (and we need more dragon stuff in this AU, don’t we?)
It’s got a smattering of isles and caves with interesting names (I kinda remember learning one of them being called a chicken, and one was called a table)

She offered an apologetic look to the fish monger while her face was poked by the phallic clam. "Yes, haha, very funny. You know you have to pay for that now."

“I at least hope you’re going to take it out to dinner before you do what I think you’re going to do.” Oboro groaned.
She reached into the barrel of geoducks and, giggling, pulled one out. Meanwhile, the shop owner rolled his eyes. There was at least one every day.
Laughing just a bit louder, Maria held the bivalve up to Oboro’s face and poked it.
