Added a "see also" section and linked to Stubbs the Zombie, a game that came out one year previous with aesthetic and thematic parallels to Fido.

Dean Obeidallah at The Dean's Report:
There’s only one thing you need to know about GOP South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem bragging about personally shooting to death her 14 month-old puppy named “Cricket” for being “untrainable” and “worthless.” She believes telling MAGA voters that she’s willing to cruelly shoot a dog to death will make them support her more. And the most alarming part is that she’s right. Keep in mind we learned that Noem—who is a top contender to be Donald Trump’s running mate in 2024—led one of her dogs named “Cricket,” a wirehair pointer, to a gravel pit and shot her because she revealed it her new book. (Below is a photo of a young wirehair pointer.) This wasn’t a story uncovered by a reporter or leaked by someone. Noem intentionally shared these facts with the nation in her new book because she wants us to know this—and she knew what the reaction would be.
For starters, she expected that animal rights groups would denounce her—and they did. For example, Wayne Pacelle, the president of Animal Wellness Action told NPR: "There's no rational and plausible excuse for Noem shooting a juvenile dog for normal puppy-like behavior." And Colleen O'Brien, senior vice president at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), denounced the governor for "punishing her by deciding to personally blow her brains out rather than attempting to train her or find a more responsible guardian." But Noem also gets that to MAGA, any group that advocates for animals—or decency, for that matter—would be seen as some type of woke organization. That is the backlash she wanted. Plus there is something far more sinister. Noem gets that MAGA loves cruelty. And what is crueler than killing a puppy to show how tough you are to the MAGA scum. (Obviously, if Noem was truly unable to train the dog, she could’ve hired a professional to help her or put this pure breed, expensive dog up for adoption—shooting the dog was about something else.)
[...] The title of Noem’s book, “No Going Back,” is a great way to look at today’s MAGA dominated GOP. The old Republican Party is dead. After all, even GOP Vice President Dick Cheney expressed regret when in 2006 while quail-hunting, he accidentally shot his friend 78-year-old Harry Whittington. Three days after the accident, Cheney told the media that shooting his friend—who survived--was “one of the worst days of my life.” Flash forward to 2024 and a potential GOP vice presidential candidate is bragging about shooting her dog to death to show Republican voters she is tough enough to potentially be President one day.
Noem perhaps included the tale of shooting her dog because she knew Trump does not like these four-legged friends that bring joy to millions. As Trump’s late wife Ivana wrote in her memoir, “Donald was not a dog fan.” She noted Trump’s hostility to her poodle, “Chappy,” who would “bark at him territorially.” (Studies do note that dogs are a good judge of character so Chappy was right to bark!) That explains why Trump was the first president in 120 years who did not have dog as a pet in the White House, a tradition started by George Washington with his two American foxhounds. Democratic and Republican Presidents that followed loved their dogs from Abraham Lincoln’s “Fido” to Barack Obama’s “Sunny” and “Bo.” And of course President Biden has a pet dog—although “Commander” has not been the best behaved at times. But Trump was the exception, even telling his supporters at a 2019 rally that having a pet dog in the White House would feel "a little phony.”
Kristi Noem’s bragging of killing her dog is part of the MAGA Cult’s fetish with cruelty.

Important question, do you mean the FIRST one we remember, or the first one we REMEMBER?
The former was the Pokémon movie circa 1999 and the latter was a zombie movie satire called Fido in 2006.
what's the first movie you remember seeing in theaters? don't try and be all edgy and cool and say like tetsuo: the iron man. be honest.
Go!!
#it may shock you all to be reminded i was 29 before seeing any star wars at all#i was the age group to see RotS in theatres but i didn't even know at the time#before anyone asks yes i did grow up in a cult. no i wont tell you which one.

PETA Sexiest Vegetarian 2009: the fall out!!
June 24th, 2009
Right guys…
On the 26 May 2009, I asked one single, simple favour of you miserable bastards.
In a heartfelt plea I requested you help me become SEXIEST VEGETARIAN IN THE WORLD TWO THOUSAND AND NINE, an accolade that I, doubtless, deserve, by just clicking on a couple of weblinks; and you useless turds couldn’t even manage that.
As a result, the male heat was won by somebody named ‘Milo Ventimiglia‘. I have no idea who this dick stretcher is, but his name sounds like something on the menu of a Korean branch of Pizza Express, and what sort of example is that?
Research has shown me this bellend is AN ACTOR. So, I ask you, HOW CAN WE EVEN KNOW THAT HE IS ACTUALLY VEGETARIAN AT ALL? It’s his job to pretend to be things he’s not, and you morons have been stupid enough to fall for it. I pity you.
I will certainly think twice before asking any one of you cock munchers to do anything for me again. Rest assured I feel there’s been a bond of trust between us BROKEN and it’s looking pretty irreparable right now.
The female victor was Kellie Pickler, contestant in American Idol 2006. Famously, I am a fan of such talent shows, and think that we’d have gotten on really well when we inevitably met. The picture above of Fido and Kellie meeting at the awards ceremony just doesn’t look right. For a start, Rover’s head is really small
Here is an artist’s impression (thanks Aleks!) of what it would have looked like if I’d won and had the opportunity to meet the beautiful Kellie:
That’s me carrying her over the threshold into our love nest, after our wedding reception, where we would have dined on soya and broccoli and I would have fought her father and guilt tripped her into veganism AND I WOULD HAVE INVITED EVERY ONE OF YOU FUCKERS!!!
But no. Because of you lot, it’s not to be. Because of you lot I am not working on country duets with my little Kel Kel, and I am not hanging out with Taylor Swift, I am sat here in my bedroom carving a carrot into the shape of a dagger FOR YOU TO STAB ME IN THE BACK AND HEART WITH YOU ABSOLUTE FUCKS!!
2010: do NOT let me down, y’hear?

i started working in Games JOurnalism after this game released and always wondered why the enormous amount of time, effort, and cash they must have thrown into a furnace to put this soundtrack together was instantly forgotten. because it does own, it has to be said, it owns. i have never been able to figure out why Cake and the Flaming Lips and Death Cab on a game soundtrack in 2005 was met with big shrugs all around, but my best guess is that 1. gamers were even stupider and less literate in the 2000s than they are now, they had no idea what to do with this beautifully-midcentury CD full of massive indie bands (because they only listened to final fantasy soundtracks) or the 50s futurism pastiche of the game's setting 2. the Dandy Warhols and Flaming Lips (arguably the biggest names on here except for Cake) tracks both suck dog balls, they must have forgotten about it and recorded it drunk in one take. idk. and 3. the game wasnt very good. like it had a lot of heart and was genuinely weird and sometimes very funny but it wasnt a great game in terms of gameplay no matter how good the styling was
it's a real weird little blank spot on the 2000s gaming landscape

#there's a stubbs remaster if you want to play it but tbh i think you could just watch Fido (2006) and probably have a better time#what was going on in the 2000s with 1950s aesthetic relitigation through the zombie lens anyway#Fido is one of my apologia films i think theres more going on there than critics picked up#primarily having to do with a feminist analysis of the premise of domesticity and abusive husbands/fathers vs the tenderness of the inhuman#one of the few actual monsterfucker films of record#also the slavery themes but that's more up front
