Well, today’s your day! It should come as no surprise that Artists on Tumblr reign supreme: from stunning traditional art, jaw-dropping digital art, fanart, sculptures, textile art—you name it, basically—this year’s list shows that Tumblr truly is the home for art and artists. Thank you, Artists on Tumblr, for enriching our dashboards day after day. 

Rounding out the top three, we have two iconic shows: Good Omens is live-action, and The Owl House is animated, but both have a heck of a love story at their core. The second season of Good Omens blessed us with not one but two ineffably exquisite ships, while the final season of The Owl House broke and then healed fans’ hearts in equal measure. Thanks, @danaterrace! Actually, come to think of it, the Good Omens finale kinda did the same in reverse. Thanks to you, too, @neil-gaiman! We can’t wait for season 3. 

Speaking of heartbreak and healing, Our Flag Means Death’s second season offered both in droves. The entire cast gave stellar performances, and fans couldn’t have been happier to see the kinds of representation the show displayed. Last year’s #1 topic, Stranger Things, may have dropped a bit, but trust us, you wouldn’t know it from the amount of meta, fanart, and fics in the tag. And did you hear about the live-action adaptations of both The Last of Us and One Piece? They were a preeeetty big deal this year, too. Check ‘em out if you haven’t yet (lol, of course you have). And we’d be remiss not to mention the hugely dedicated fans, fanartists, and fic writers devoting their time to all things Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Y’all deserve a little pizza, as a treat.

2023 was also a year for blockbuster movies, which of course hasn’t escaped anybody’s notice here on Tumblr. Barbie smashed box offices worldwide and left us reeling with every re-watch. How can one describe Greta Gerwig’s pink-filled opus? It certainly is one of the movies of all time. Meanwhile, with its incredible animation and soundtrack, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced us to a whole new multiverse of Spider-People, opening the portal to a veritable flood of incredible OCs. And then, of course, we got a fresh perspective on an old classic when cinephiles introduced Martin Scorscese’s cinematic masterpiece, Goncharov (1973), to a new generation of film aficionados who resoundingly agree that it is, in fact, the greatest mafia movie ever made. We’re so glad this underrated film finally got the acclaim it has long deserved.

In the realms of gaming and tech, the long-anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 has basically become everyone’s new favorite D&D/dating sim combination. Of course, the Pokémon franchise, games, shows, and Hatsune Miku collabs remain perennial favorites. Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, sorry, we mean of course X, made waves across the internet. Similarly, the Reddit blackout drove Redditors to new venues, and Tumblr users welcomed the folks from r/196 with open arms—we’re huge fans of your memes, y’all, and you fit right in. Welcome, we’re glad you enjoy the chaos. Here’s a fun fact: if we included post metadata in Year in Review rankings, #polls, introduced in January of 2023, would have been the #5 topic on Tumblr this year. Phenomenal. 

And, oh right. Taylor Swift had kind of a big year, what with the albums, the epic global tour, and the movie and stuff. Fantastic work, @taylorswift, the Swifties on Tumblr thank you for everything.

there is thunder in our hearts - this story came together so easily for me, like i knew exactly how i wanted to tell it from start to finish

the only hoax i believe in - a kfam fic in my top 5s why yes and i'll tell you why. because i poured so much of myself into this fic that they could probably read it at my funeral instead of a eulogy

traveling so far to get there - after party au raph and mikey continue to take up so much real estate in my brain and for what

now the darkness comes alive - this one is more recent but im so happy with the way it turned out :')

if we could stay all day in the sun - it was a lot of fun reimagining one of my favorite fairy tales and doing a bunch of unnecessary research for this story i will stand by it until the day i die !!

1. Anything by buzzcut_season really. Their writing is spectacular and made my heart clench on so many occasions. My personal GOD of writing fluff. And the person that got me through the hells of teenage puberty.(for the record, i am still in puberty lmfao) my firsts in the tag tooth-rotting fluff and the magics of slow burn. (Sk8 the Infinity)

2. Neon Void by sugarpastels. The creator is here on Tumblr with the same user so if you wanna check her out go ahead!! FANTASTIC writing, villain Leo au with heart pounding scenes that leave me dizzy. A fic has never made me breathless and needing to pace around my room more than this one (special shoutout to her sister as well who is writing a mutant mayhem fic that unfortunately didn’t get added to the list but is still super well written!!) (ROTTMNT)

3. Anytime You Need Me by thirteenbullets. I really don’t need to elaborate more. Character analysis + fluff + non sexual intimacy + long fics… it’s the perfect series for me. I felt like a stuck gold when i read this. (COD)

4. The Eldest Brother by dEBB987. Classic 2012 x 2018 crossover, but it doesn’t have ooc and is just such. A. Fun. Read. Made me giggle and kick my legs more than one occasion and good family feels all around. (TMNT)

5. Mutant Ninja Midlife Crisis by a_platypus. Old Leo comes back to the past after the events of the movie to readjust to new life. The right amount of drama with the perfect amount of slice of life. This fic actually gives the old turtle a break but also not letting go of the teenage angst and everything that comes with seeing your dead friends young and alive again. Would have been higher on the list but it’s not completed sadly. The author does write for COD as well though, and it’s worth to check it out! (ROTTMNT)

Yes!!! I love love love it when people comment and try to interact if possible.

Probably the panic attack Ghost fic. Haven’t written much angst if im remembering correctly. I’m a major fluff person

Oh god i really haven’t written a proper fic at all helps. I’m frantically swiping through my robs ramblings tag and just realising most of the ghoap stuff i write is about their undying dedication to each other. Jesus. Happiest ending is probably one of my blurbs cause every time i try to write actual fluff i overheat and explode.

Nah. I don’t think ill ever write smut honestly not because im asexual its just that I don’t think I can write one accurately if that makes sense. Also im a minor I don’t think im allowed to do that

The drunk soap one and the Ghoap one where they’re on stakeout together. I didn’t like the second one initially, but i think slaving over it worked. I love how I managed to balance the quietness and mutual respect and fondness of each other.

Since I’ve gotten some new followers recently thanks to the soulmate goose rec list that I wrote for the Rec Center, I thought some of you might be interested in another list of soulmate goose fics that I liked but which didn’t make the cut for whatever reason; enjoy!

Geese And Other Love Signs by Ingi. 1.1K words, rated Gen. Fandom: X-Men; Ship: Erik Lensherr/Charles Xavier.

Erik returns to the mansion after “the Beach Divorce” and finds that Charles has located another young mutant with a very unusual power. It’s always fun seeing badasses bested by a goose and I love Erik’s vain attempts to maintain dignity in the face of defeat.

Congratulations, It’s a Soulmate Goose by mikkimouse. 1.7K words, rated Teen. Fandom: MCU; Ship: Bucky Barnes/Sam Wilson.

When Bucky shows up with an aggressive goose perched on his shoulder, Sam finds it hilarious but also sets about trying to figure out how to help. Spoilers: the answer involves kissing. Great banter, very cute.

Why Would A Goose Be in the Archives by orphan_account. 3K words, rated Gen. Fandom: The Magnus Archives; Ship: Martin Blackwood/Jonathan Sims.

Martin comes across a strange statement regarding a possibly supernatural goose and is debating whether to show it to Jon, when the goose in question appears in the archives. Captures the characters’ voices well, and the romantic confession is adorably awkward.

Wild Goose Chase by Black_Crystal_Dragon. 6K words, rated Gen. Fandom: Good Omens; Ship: Aziraphale/Crowley.

Crowley gets attacked by a miracle-proof goose in St James’s Park, and when Aziraphale has no luck against it either, they go to Tadfield in search of advice. Lots of fun goose action, and I love the suggestion that God ships Ineffable Husbands.

Captive Goose by beautifulduckweed. 26K words (WIP), rated Explicit. Fandom: Captive Prince; Ship: Damen/Laurent.

A sacred soulmate goose shows up at the battlefield of Marlas in time to save Auguste and lead Damen to a young Laurent, then basically forces them to shack up together. The only soulmate goose fic I’ve read that actually has a full-blown plot, including some pretty impressive integration of the goose into canon-typical court intrigue.

Two Guys, A Goose and A Panera Bread by me! 3.3K words, rated Gen. Fandom: What We Do in the Shadows; Ship: Guillermo de la Cruz/Nandor the Relentless.

Guillermo canonically met Nandor while working at Panera Bread, but what Nandor was doing there in the first place? Obviously, he was chased there by a soulmate goose. My favourite of my own fics, I’m particularly proud of the action choreography and the vampirism reveal.

A fic, from any other POV...

I mentioned yesterday that I was working on two projects at the same time. The first is a TMFU fic about a Napoleon who is studying as an adult to get a high school diploma (aka: Adult High School Napollya) but tonight is for working on my other current fic project, codenamed:

Ineffable Mutants

I could try and make the pitch sound fancy but basically it’s Crowley and Aziraphale, but as mutants in the modern world. That’s basically the plot. And my problem with this story isn’t so much finding a plot (thank you, Hard Times and a brilliant fanfic for providing that) but figuring out what POV I want to write this fic from.

Usually, when I write, the POV is easy to find because the things I want to explore call for a specific one. For my Superbat Big Bang, I was exploring what made Superman Superman, for instance, so it was only logical to pick his point of view. My latest longer fics before that, Once more with kissing and With what we have (Digimon Adventure Tri and Voltron: Legendary Defenders, respectively) explored things that either pertained to a specific character’s emotion and evolution (OMWK) or explored themes that would be best served by using one character in particular (W3H) so that made it easy.

In the case of this project, though...they’re both important to the story, and they both have themes I’d be interested in exploring, which means I might have to take a leap of faith and step out of my usual Third Person Limited POVs.

Like, on the one hand, Crowley is at a time of his life where he’s gotten away from his terrible family (Hell) and he’s learning more and more to let go of the posturing he had to engage in in order to survive said family, which would be an interesting thing to look at through this fic--how he once again reinvents himself to settle better into the life he wants to have.

On the other side, you have Aziraphale, who is only just getting to the point where he can’t deny what he is (Gay) anymore, all thanks to falling for Crowley. He’s forced to confront who he is and what his family (Heaven) is, and experience which comes with a whole lot of unpleasant truths to absorb, which is also interesting, and also probably something closer to what I know.

Which actually, as I write this...kind of solves my problem. I mean, it isn’t like I’ve made it a secret that my fics are strongly impacted by my life experience, so what’s one more, right? Though I guess it’s funny, because I was planning on asking you guys for opinions and thoughts, and then I wrote this and the problem solved itself.

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the dip in my writing process! I’m trying to get the writing blog active again and I figured, this is as good a way as any :P

It’s funny how six months of working on the same fic makes you forget how hard beginning a fic is.

And by ‘it’s funny’ I mean ‘this fic barely has an outline and the concept isn’t even clearly defined, and we’re already fighting’

I had been just about to message you myself because I've been dying for the next chapter, so that you for the sneak peak and I'm glad to know you're working on Ch 12 and in fact through Ch 17! It's amazing that your writing style is to plan and to write ahead so much, good luck and thank you for what you're doing for the fandom!

I must confess that planning ahead has not gone according to plan on this story AT ALL. I intended Lensherr & Xavier, Attorneys at Law to be this low-key series about civil lawyers dealing with ordinary stuff. Logan’s military pension was going to be an episode. Scott’s problem at work was going to be an episode. I had other mutants with other legal issues in the works (Azazel got picked up for a visa violation because he teleported into a country without going through customs; stuff like that). The relationship was going to be this slow burn in the background.

Then Edie showed up. Edie, bless her sweet little heart, she never makes trouble, right? She’s always the sweetest, most loving mother to Erik in the world and that’s her whole role. Edie Edie Edie. Her backstory skewed the whole story sideways and this action plot is now blowing out the seams and I’m all, ‘THIS WAS NOT THE PLAN!’ and the story does not care about my plan. It’s going like this right now:

Story: THIS happens

Me: That is not THE Plan

Story: This isn’t Good Omens. You don’t get an Ineffable Plan. Do what you’re told.

Me: Fine. Be that way. I’m going to go write other stuff.

Story: You should learn to be a gracious loser when you don’t get your way.

Then there is all the other angst about writer choices I already made. Erik is neurodivergent in this story, and now I’m wondering if he’s accurate. I mean, I don’t actually have ADHD, but I am up close and personal with people who do have ADHD and insecurity is an issue for them. ADHD is hard, and people with ADHD kinda get trained to believe they’re usually the problem if something goes wrong. So I’m writing Erik as insecure because of his ADHD and Erik is always supposed to be arrogant and over-confident. I think it works? But maybe it doesn’t?

Plus, the big social issue I tackled in L&X:AatL is workplace sexual harassment because the #MeToo movement happened in this modern AU. Since then, coronavirus has killed thousands, torpedoed the economy, and now racial tensions have exploded. I can’t work any of that into the story. I’d already written it up to June 2020 (Hey! I caught up to myself) and nothing like that has happened. Do I have to acknowledge any of that? No, that won’t work.

So the real reason I have to write so far ahead of what I’m publishing is because stories go sideways and I need enough lead time to work that in and foreshadow things. Because outlines don’t matter! Scenes do what they want and I just run after them shouting “hey! you need foreshadowing! get back here!”

Have you read Survival Instinct yet? That’s my XMFC fix-it fic that is already finished. I put the XMFC characters and plot in a blender, added a paternal Logan to hug Charles and piss off Erik, KEPT ARMANDO ALIVE (this cannot be emphasized enough), let Erik indulge his flair for dramatic entrances, inflicted Charles with another helmet, gave Raven a chance to be a good sister, read a book about the Cuban Missile Crisis, likely got myself put on an FBI watchlist for googling things like “how to steal a nuclear reactor from a submarine” and managed to produce a couple of really good action chapters. Seriously, chapters 15 and 16 took me eight weeks of daily writing.

Thank you for your listening to my writer angst explosion. I feel better for getting that off my chest. I actually did write a scene since the last anon asked (Logan had a major disagreement with autocorrect and cannot text with his claws out). Progress!

Random Fun Facts While My PC is Charging

[~*~] I literally have just ONE Oc who doesn't has a happy ending. I always feel a little bad about her and now I propably will think about a good end for this girl because she deserves. :3

(✒) It would be a very visual fic if wrote that, because it's gore. And that is exactly why I'm not writing XP.

(✒) It was to happen in the world of Magnus Chase (from Rick Riordan) but I guess it could work being original? :'3

[~*~] My very first OC was for a Naruto Fanfic. Her name is Mika and her power was summon clones but as part of her personality. It was crazy. I literally just remember about her today, like, five years after The Big Creation. Sivsjgsugsyfakba. I'm clearly an awesome mom.

(✒) She had chapter about her, though. This is rare between my OC's (poor babys :'3 I'm sorrey).

[~*~] I have a OC called Times and he is, like, an humanization of references about all the fandoms I was at that time. I used to talk with him to calm myself. He is very cute and logic. -w-)b

(✒) The fandom was: Sherlock Holmes, FullMetal Alchemist, Undertale, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Percy Jackson.

[~*~] My first OC (COF COF which I didn't ignore the existence and REALLY elaborate a decent plot COF cof) is called Melissa and she has a spirit sharing her body with her. Non of them wanted that, though, and it just happened for a revenge prank. The storie happens in Percy Jackson.

(✒) The spirit is called Inner. It's pretty powerful, but doesn't can use her powers most of time because she doesn't have a body.

(✒) Melissa isn't really daughter of any god, but she can get in the Halfblood Camp because of Inner (and in the future she got some god's blood mixed with her own. Long short story: She almost died and Apollo is a little sorry for some prank [that will endure the rest of her life but that's okay :3] and try to do some good action.)

(✒) The godly blood unblocked some strange powers from Inner. They can talk with water, now! :D)/

(✒) Inner is not bad, is not very good, though.

[~*~] I like to created OC that could easly be just a secondary character. I find it cool.

[~*~] The OC who I am always desevolving the storie is Alex, who is like a psicologist for the characters of every fandom that I am. XD. She can travel to their universes and help them. However, she doesn't choose where, when or who she will help/find. And everytime she gets out from a Universe everyone forgets about her, just rembering when she is back. Even in her own. She also change gender nor apparence in some Universes. And when Alex really needs help, she travels too.

(✒) "But this means that, when she die, everyone will just forget about her?? Im every Universe??" Almost like that. In that case will not just 'forget' her existence will be ereased. She bought that power for this price.

(✒) About Alex, yup, she has a happy ending! (Happy as it can be) and in a quite... Ineffable way. ~

(✒) She already went to TMNT 2012 (But can't come back to there), Batman, Avangers, Transformers and Good Omens.

14. Go on, who are your BroTPs?

I don’t know if it means the same as it used to back in the day but I’m gonna go with friendships. I have a thing for the triumvirate in Les Mis (Enjolras, Combeferre & Courfeyrac), I’ve always liked the idea that their friendship is the tripod in which the group was built, in a way, and that having different perspectives on the same thing strengthens them rather than pulls them apart. Also, Phryne and Mac, which I know people sometimes ship, but to me their friendship is super important. Also, Anne and Diana from Anne of Green Gables ♥ 

23. Name a fic you’ve written that you’re especially fond of & explain why you like it.

Oh boy. I never love my fics completely, but I’ll try to be forgiving. 

The first one that comes to mind is by no means a favorite in terms of the fic itself, but I have a special attachment to it for other reasons. It’s a Les Mis mutant au I wrote between 2013 and 2014, and it happened to be in progress when my life changed dramatically. I was in a very rough place, mental health wise and in my life, and I had already started this au which is probably, to this day, the most ambitious I’ve done in terms of worldbuilding and action. 

Up until then, I reserved fic for self-indulging in scenarios and I didn’t really tried more ambitious things like what I did with my personal writing. And I thought, hey, why not try my best with this, let’s use it to do things I’m absolutely NOT used to. Sci-fi? check, action? check, explicit scenes? check, canon references embedded throughout an overarching story?, check, minor character death?, check, and so on. 

Before I reached half of it, my mental health declined exponentially and very fast. My life started changing, I lost several people and, long story short, the majority of the things I had set myself to write were triggering now. I hadn’t yet been correctly diagnosed, so I was absolutely lost. 

And I know it sounds silly that a fic would be something to fixate upon when I had so many other things to do that now I was unable (like facing university again), but I somehow didn’t want to let the story go. 

Long story short, I used the fic to face things and to unravel things about myself and, now I know, it was a form of exposure that actually helped me to figure out what was happening to me. So maybe now it’s a cringey story written in 2013/2014, and back in the day it definitely didn’t sit atop the most popular pile of the fandom, but I read it now and I can see my own progress, even if back then I felt like I was never going to advance at all. 

This is super long and unnecessary and nobody cares, but yeah. That one.

Currently opened in a tab: What These Eyes Can’t Tell You by Ineffable Storm, which I haven’t finished yet (Fandom: Good Omens). 

Currently ongoing fic I’ve bookmarked: Pillow Talk by Embarrasedbutkinky, which even though it’s explicit and I’m very particular with the explicitness, it’s over 100 chapters long already and has over 3000 kudos for a reason (fandom: Dragon Ball). 

Last fic I’ve bookmarked: By Definition by idiopathicsmile, which is an explicit fic with an asexual character (tagged as gray ace), something that not only is difficult to find, it’s difficult to see done well, and this one does (Fandom: Good Omens). 

Previous to last fic I’ve bookmarked: Between Land and Sea by Fiver, which is a lovely au with merfolk and pirates, one of my many weaknesses (Fandom: Les Mis). 

Fic Series bookmarked that I like to go back to: YOURS! Snips and Snails and Squirrelly Tales is my favorite fic series of the MFMM fandom ever, to this day. You took things I would have been meh about and made something amazing that I love to go back to ♥ You know when sometimes you like a fic so much you mentally make it part of canon? that’s this to me ♥

Okay so technically @ao3commentoftheday‘s, Work in Progress Wednesday gives you the opportunity to just work on something without posting extracts on the web BUT...well, I like posting extracts. I have to find a balance because if I overdo it it feels like all the excitement has been had and it’s barely worth writing the fic, but still. So, in lieu of an extract from the Ineffable Mutants project, have this:

This is the timeline of events for the fic, or at least the main events, compressed down from 6 000 years of pining to “only” six years, which remains a really respectable Pining Time for two people who are human.

For this week’s Six Sentences Sunday, I was hoping to have something to show from the Ineffable Mutants project: it’d have been a way to alternate between two stories and, hopefully, keep things more entertaining. Fate, and my brain, have decided that wasn’t to be so, however, so let’s have six sentences from the Adult High School!Napoleon fic or, as I’ve decided to tag it: AHS Napollya.

Napoleon wakes up with a start, the bone-chilling freeze of his memories still digging into his ass and back, a shiver running through him when his hip twinges with the phantom ache of a night spent on concrete, and he’s sinking further into his parka before he realizes he didn’t emerge from sleep on his own. The blonde man from Monday and yesterday looms over him, concern creasing at his eyes and pulling at the dark line of stitches on his right temple. Whatever caused that, it must have hurt like hell.

“Are you okay?” The stranger asks.

Napoleon’s answer is cut off by a yawn so long even he can’t help but scoff at the end of it, although he does keep enough presence of mind to gesture for his apparently-study-buddy to sit down. The man doesn’t sit down, however, opting instead to walk around their table and loom over Napoleon from a closer space.

Checking in

So, did I just spend the best part of the morning rearranging both my tumblr themes and my dreamwidth icons to have them contain more Ineffable husbands ? Yes I have. Was it a waste of time ? Depends on your standards. Do I have any regrets ? None whatsoever, I can work on the SBB this afternoon and still catch up, easy.

It was nice to just worry about that this morning and not think of work—the past few weeks have been a bit tense, what with exams and new methods and things. I mean, I don’t deal well with change no matter what kind—either I’m the one who initiates it and that means I’ll talk/think about it FOREVER and then go for it all at once (see : the tattoo I thought about getting for almost ten years and then got without discussing it with anyone beforehand) or someone else introduces it and my go-to reaction is pretty much always no. I come around eventually, with more or less speed depending on if I like the new proposed status quo, but there’s always a part of me that wants to nope out before I even hear the end of things—so I can very much relate to both Aziraphale and Crowley, here.

Anyhoos, that’s OVER for this session, meaning I can breathe a little more easily and focus on my Big Bang writing : I’m only about 4k behind my writing goals, which I should be able to catch up with fast enough, and then hopefully it’ll be a straight line until the 15th, when I hope to hand the by-then 100k (plus?) monster over to my wonderful beta reader for editing. Also, by then I should have begun to fix my ankle, which will be a relief and infinitely more practical to go and see trovia in Germany at the end of the month (I am EXCITE, guys) !

And boy, that’s a project as well, no mistake there :D I need to make a list of the things I want to see and do, and also send an email to my bank in France so I can use my card and not have it blocked, because that would be awkward. Bless the EU for meaning I don’t have to bother with visas or anything of the sort, to be honest.

And then, when all of that is done, I’ll be able to throw a dart at my stack of WIPs and think about maybe finishing and publishing another fic (although hopefully not that large!) before the end of the year. Question is : will I go for one of my series* work on one of my Napollya fics (strangely enough, I think the Enchanted fusion would be the likeliest candidate, which is fun because I was way more serious about the mutant!Napoleon fic when I started thinking about it) or do I indulge in that one idea for mutant!Crowley & Aziraphale fic I had the other day.

Tough decisions, but I guess if anyone wants to weigh in/hear more about any of those projects, you’re welcome to weigh in or just come talk to me about it.

In the mean time, I might rewatch the longest cold open in history for the twelfth time in, uh, seven days...and it’ll be tickledi-boo ;)

Why yes, the fact that I dislike any type of fic or headcanon trying to 'figure out' what Crowley's angelic name was and the fact that Ineffable Mutants!Crowley is definitely going to be a trans man stem 100% from the same source thank you for asking.
