Does Dooku have a first name, or did in Legends? The Rupalp’s Podrace podcast has this running joke where they say it’s Craig. So I sometimes tag posts “Craig Dooku”.

How much does Legends Dooku seep into your fics?

Oh, fun question! I'd seen that tag and wondered. That's great. :D

No first name in Legends - which lead to the famous fanon "Yan Dooku" which started popping up in fics when the films were coming out. In current canon, I think Dooku is supposed to be his first name, and "House Serenno" is his family name, with the planet (re?)named for his family after they threw the ancient Sith out back in the day. So he'd be Dooku of House Serenno, or Dooku Serenno, which I actually love. Secret heir vibes with him just going by his first name when his last name would immediately give away his connection to a family that hated him and threw him out.

As for Legends Dooku and my fics - I write Sith-Era Dooku strongly influenced by Legends. His portrayal in Yoda: Dark Rendezvous is likely why I'm a Dooku fan: I like the mix of wry elegance, deadliness, and a pit of needy instability. It's a heady brew.

By contrast, Legends Jedi Dooku gave me a tummy ache. Current Canon Jedi-Era Dooku is actually WHY I started writing fic again after a billion years away. I feel like it gave me a lot of permission to write Jedi Dooku the way I'd always wanted to, working backward from how he ends up, instead of this cardboard cutout evil guy with a couple Dracula references thrown in that we see in Legends. I never understood why the Council, people who he didn't even get along with, would vouch for him so hard in AotC if he was this cold, unpleasant caricature of a person.

I'm not saying the current canon doesn't have any flaws, but they let Jedi Dooku be brave, funny, emotional (fucking SO EMOTIONAL), a great teacher, parental, warm, awkward, embarrassing, and genuine. He has moments of incredible valor and ability; he also makes mistakes and sometimes just totally wipes out with them. He's stern and reserved, but he also surrounds himself with loving, funny extroverts.

Anyway, as a person who mainly writes fic with Dooku in that Jedi era, it was great characterization to me and I draw on it heavily. That's a guy I want to take on an adventure, you know?

I don't think there is any right way for me to put this. And I would like to apologize to everyone who will be disappointed by this message.

This last week has been incredibly hard for me. Starting with the weird wave of hate anons accusing me of being "cliquey" and not welcoming enough with small authors in the HotD community, to the issues I had with Sam (blackdreamspeaks here on Tumblr), to some heartbreaking news I just received today from people I considered my friends... I just can't do it anymore.

I am going on a small hiatus. I will post the next part of THW when I deem it ready, as well as the continuation for Dragon Sickness. After that, I might move most of my writings to Ao3 (@ItsActuallyMinicika).

I don't want to say anything for certain, as I am extremely hurt and confused, and I recognise I'm not in the right mindset to make any important calls right now.

I would like to thank everyone who supported me and still does so to this day, who believed in me and encouraged me to write my fics and say the truth, no matter how hard that may be ♡

I'm just not in the right headspace to stick around right now. I feel unwelcome in both my IRL circles and some smaller ones that I created on Tumblr. So I need to use this break to decide what's best for me.

Writing has always been my escape from real life. I'm a med student who functions on 3-5 hours of sleep a day, and I have manuscripts to learn and a bunch of manuals to master. In between all my tasks, I write and post here. But I don't feel seen or heard anymore, and going on an app that makes me feel sad would just be masochistic and not at all the correct moveset. It felt as though I was crying wolf when I spoke to people about my worries (but that isn't anyone's fault but my own - perhaps my expectations are too high, and I put too much pressure on always doing the right thing, no matter who gets to benefit from it), so I'll take some needed distance.

Either way, yep, hiatus.

This might take a day or two, or a full blown week etc. I'll still be working on the requests I got, and do my best to post them soon. I just won't be very active here.

One hill I will die on is that it's always infinitely funnier for mad scientist characters to have an actual area of expertise, and the narrower it is, the funnier it gets. Like, they're mad scientists. They can branch out from it. But it's a very special thing to be able to point to the person who built a death ray/engineered life in their basement/etc and be able to confidently state what they got their PhD in.

"Doc Brown is a mad scientist" Well yeah, obviously.

"Doc Brown is a mad physicist" Now we're getting somewhere!

"Doc Brown is a mad nuclear physicist" Specifically conjures up images of a guy who spent his PhD doing a million repetitive cyclotron tests and eventually said fuck this, I'm building a time machine instead. Comedy gold.

tfw when you pick a college for a character to go to BECAUSE it's snobby and full of self-important white people who probably got in as legacy admissions and certainly got in because of nepotism to an overrated school that's only seen as important by a certain subset of a very specific social class...

...only now that school keeps coming up in the news because they are doing a horrifically bad job at the very basic and (in my humble opinion) bare fucking minimum thing of protecting their fucking students and faculty from violence inflicted on them by hate groups

...and FURTHER, half the internet has decided those violent hate groups are good and righteous, actually, so now I'm nervous people will get the wrong idea and be pissed when I start getting into the "actually, Columbia has always sucked" portion of the fic

ah well. such is life now, I guess.

I'm kidding. Mostly. One fic is being rewritten from the ground up and the other I started several years ago and still haven't finished.

But yeah these notes about organization are good and helpful!)

since I've seen it talked about in several places recently:

if you are going to do a whump- or kink- or ANY-tober or other similar challenges please please please don't post them as one fic with 31 chapters unless it actually is one coherent fic. if they're 31 completely separate fics or ficlets then please just make a collection for them or just post them as separate fics. it doesn't matter if they're only 100 words or if you think they're too small or insignificant to post alone, they're not.

and why this?

because if you post all 31 of them in one fic the tagging is absolutely useless. if I look for things to read on ao3 I'm gonna look at the tags, and if the tags include something that's a dealbreaker for me, i won't even click on the fic. I might not even SEE the fic because I've filtered out the nope-tag! so I'm gonna lose out on reading 30 perfectly nice fics because of one fic that my nope-tag applied to.

ao3 is about archiving. it's about clear tagging and being informative. there is nothing informative about it if the tags in the fic apply to random chapters while others have nothing to do with it. it makes so much more sense to have each work as an individual fic with its own individual tags and warnings, so readers can make informed choices.

of course, you do you. I can't police what other people decide to do. but personally, I find it incredibly frustrating to weed through 31 chapters to find the ones I actually want to read. so I don't. I automatically scroll past all works posted like that. and I know some others do, too.

there is absolutely no shame in posting short things on ao3. there is no minimum word count. no one is going to look at you funny if you post a small ficlet on its own, I promise. it's just going to make some readers very happy when they can actually find the things they want to read.

so, please. at least consider the upsides of posting each work as their own fic.

They play it completely cool but then realize that babies cry and they have no food or idea what to do. While Alfred runs out to get the necessary supplies, Bruce (who is highly convinced he's losing his mind) finds said baby and manages to get it to calm down.
