Turnabout Intruder is the very last episode of the classic Star Trek series. I just finished watching it and was really surprised about the plot and how things played out, because I had not seen this episode of the very long time. I honestly forgot about it. I found myself on the edge of my seat all the way to the end of the story.

Afterward, I did some digging online and found out that this episode was voted as the worst Star Trek episode ever. I must say that I cannot agree. This was a remarkable episode, very tense, very dramatic.

Although Shatner‘s performance is panned as being over the top, I actually found him to be authentically portraying someone who has taken over another person‘s body and is now losing control of the situation. I also disagreed with one observation that criticized the episode for somehow asserting that women that looked for leadership positions were only driven by insanity and jealousy. In this case, that was the situation, but I did not take it to mean that it implied to females in general.

Keep in mind, this is a TV show that was aired in 1969. Although it is a science-fiction series, set in the distant future, it is still a product of and representative of its time. Of course, back then, women were not allowed to become captains. Fortunately, we have since learned that one’s gender (or race) has no bearing on one’s ability to lead.

I love space horror, and this includes some other faves: shifting perspective between one reactive character and one antagonist(!), intercut with ominous audio transmissions. Lies & coverups, constantly shifting allegiances & betrayals, and the everpresent threat of an unknown and fully horrifying fate. This is exactly like one of my favorite books of 2022, Dead Silence by S. A. Barnes, and I'm happy that I essentially got to experience it for the first time twice. I love that for me :)

Okay but has anyone else got theories on HOW Ben causes an apocalypse??

My bet is that whatever is happening to him is actually kind of splitting him in half, into both Umbrella!Ben and Sparrow!Ben. However, since he has a literal portal to eldrich horrors in him, it’s opening that portal which is creating a big enough gap for those horrors to escape into the world.

It would explain why the army are trying to stop him since, yknow, typical sci-fi world takeover story.

Evidence: no. Just think it’d be funky :)

I think there are sci-fi stories where the specific numbers in play matter, but Star Wars isn't one of them. How many clones did the Republic order? Enough to engage the Separatists at a scale that wasn't previously possible with.... however many Jedi Knights and planetary militias they had five seconds before the start of Attack of the Clones. Enough that maintaining the clone army is putting a serious strain on domestic infrastructure spending, softening up civil society for a strongman takeover. Is "3 million units" a number that accomplishes those things? Is 10,000 Jedi Knights a number that makes any sense? Probably not. But how much does it cost you to just slot in whatever number you think would fit with the dynamic being gestured at?
