Embracing Diversity and Inclusivity: Initiatives in Bangalore's Day Schools
In the multicultural landscape of Bangalore, day schools play a pivotal role in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusivity among students from various backgrounds.
Recognizing the importance of creating an inclusive learning environment where every student feels valued and respected, day schools in Bangalore implement a range of initiatives to address diversity and inclusivity effectively.
In this article, we delve into the strategies and practices adopted by day schools in Bangalore to promote diversity and inclusivity, ensuring that all students have equitable access to education and opportunities for success.
Celebrating Cultural Diversity
Day schools in Bangalore celebrate the rich cultural diversity of the city by organizing multicultural events, festivals, and heritage days that showcase the traditions, customs, and cuisines of different communities.
These events provide students with opportunities to learn about and appreciate diverse cultures, fostering empathy, tolerance, and respect for cultural differences.
By embracing cultural diversity, day schools create a welcoming and inclusive environment where students feel proud of their heritage while also developing an understanding of and appreciation for other cultures.
Implementing Inclusive Curriculum
Incorporating an inclusive curriculum is essential for ensuring that all students feel represented and valued in day schools in Bangalore.
Schools strive to include diverse perspectives, histories, and experiences in their curriculum materials, textbooks, and teaching resources.
By integrating multicultural literature, diverse historical narratives, and inclusive lesson plans, teachers can create a learning environment that affirms the identities and experiences of all students, regardless of their backgrounds.
Additionally, schools may offer language support programs and English as a second language (ESL) classes to support students from non-English-speaking backgrounds.
Providing Equity in Access
Day schools in Bangalore prioritize equity in access to education by implementing policies and practices that ensure equal opportunities for all students, regardless of their socioeconomic status, abilities, or identities.
Schools may offer scholarships, financial aid, or fee waivers to students from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure that financial barriers do not hinder their access to quality education.
Additionally, schools may provide accommodations, support services, and resources for students with disabilities to ensure that they have equitable access to learning opportunities and facilities.
Promoting Inclusive Practices
Inclusive practices such as differentiated instruction, universal design for learning (UDL), and cooperative learning strategies are integral to creating an inclusive learning environment in day schools in Bangalore.
Teachers are trained to adapt their teaching methods and materials to accommodate diverse learning needs, styles, and preferences.
By incorporating flexible grouping strategies, peer tutoring, and cooperative learning activities, teachers can create opportunities for collaboration, peer support, and shared learning experiences that benefit all students, regardless of their abilities or backgrounds.
Fostering Respect and Empathy
Day schools in Bangalore prioritize social-emotional learning and character development to foster respect, empathy, and inclusivity among students.
Through values education programs, mindfulness practices, and conflict resolution strategies, schools cultivate a culture of empathy, kindness, and mutual respect among students.
By promoting positive relationships, communication skills, and conflict resolution strategies, schools empower students to navigate differences, resolve conflicts peacefully, and build inclusive communities where everyone feels valued and respected.
Conclusion
Diversity and inclusivity are fundamental values in day schools in Bangalore, where students from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, grow, and thrive.
By celebrating cultural diversity, implementing inclusive curriculum, providing equity in access, promoting inclusive practices, and fostering respect and empathy, day schools create environments where every student feels valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
Through these initiatives, day schools in Bangalore strive to create inclusive communities where diversity is celebrated, and all students have equal opportunities to succeed academically, socially, and emotionally.

Laberinto Press: Bringing ESL Voices to Canadian Publishing
Writers from all over the world call Canada home, but once in Canada, they don't always get the opportunity to become published writers—not if English is their second language.
One of those writers is Luciana Erregue-Sacchi, a Canadian-Argentinian editor, writer—and now publisher—who like many hyphenated Canadians, rarely saw or heard underrepresented ESL voices in Canada’s largely anglo-centric publishing industry. In 2020 she changed that, launching Laberinto Press—Western Canada’s first press to publish writers whose first language is not English, and world literature in translation. Its mandate? Produce literature by culturally diverse writers that do not pander to tokenism, but touch on the true diversity, multiplicity, and complexity of the human experience. As Errugue-Sacchi explains, that mandate extends to every detail of the press, including its name.
“Laberinto is the Spanish word for labyrinth, one of the main literary tropes of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges, who writes about intersecting and diverging stories and lives in his short story “The Garden of Forking Paths.” As a child, I was also fascinated with the story of the Minotaur, and as a young immigrant, that idea of losing and finding yourself resonated with me,” says Erregue-Sacchi. “Laberinto Press is the synthesis of those converging and diverging stories we tell each other. It is a site of encounters and experiences.”
Thanks in part to a cultural diversity grant from the Edmonton Arts Council (EAC), Erregue-Sacchi was able to actualize her editorial mandate by publishing Beyond the Food Court: An Anthology of Literary Cuisines. As Erregue-Sacchi explains, discovering the EAC’s grant allowed her to do much more than publish her first book.
“It was a perfect convergence of what I wanted to create and the avenues to pursue that project,” says Erregue-Sacchi. “I came across the grant just browsing their website, and it has been a life-changing investment. I managed to create not just an anthology with 14 local authors, I got to hire local editors, designers, pay for the printing, the marketing materials, and get started with my press, which has already produced its second book. Most importantly, it gave me a huge sense of accomplishment and, probably, I am still unable to see the actual ramifications of this. That is to say, grants do a lot more than support a particular project—grants are a massive vote of confidence for artists, cultural workers, and the communities they represent and serve.”
Laberinto’s second publication, Beyond the Gallery, continues the anthology series, this time featuring a broad range of writings on visual culture by Spanish-speaking writers, artists, and cultural workers. Though Erregue-Sacchi happily admits that anthologies are one of her favourite genres, her decision to publish them as Laberinto’s first two books was as practical as it was personally gratifying.
“I really wanted to showcase as many of our writers as possible,” says Erregue-Sacchi. “I wanted people to focus on the deep value of diverse narratives and the power of brief stories to create conversation. In my case, I decided I wanted to tackle two senses: taste (Beyond the Food Court) and sight-non-sight (Beyond the Gallery), and showcase wildly different stories from writers who live here in Canada. I want to demystify difference by engaging with it.
Creating spaces that don’t yet exist is an all-too-common necessity for the BIPOC community, but if you’re lucky enough to chat with Erregue-Sacchi, you’ll discover that the deliberate joy in what she brings to publishing is as intentional as her editorial mandate. But as grateful as she is for the support she’s received, the realities of carving out a space for Laberinto Press in Canadian publishing has been exhausting to navigate.
“As much as I want to thank local festival organizers, independent bookstores, distributors, and granting bodies in the province who believe in diversifying the publishing industry, there is still lots to be done,” says Erregue-Sacchi, adding that “agencies like the Canadian Book Fund do not fund emerging BIPOC publishers like myself, instead prioritizing ‘diverse’ books by established presses who have earnings of above $50,000. Likewise, The Canada Council has funding schemes for publishers, but as Erregue-Sacchi points out, “it’s rarely for publishers at the earliest, shall we say, embryonic stages of their business life.”
The logistical gymnastics don’t end there. “Funding bodies mostly require that the applicants be non-profit organizations or loose groups of collaborators, rather than businesses that, ultimately, support BIPOC artists,” notes Erregue-Sacchi. “Sometimes other bodies request that a publisher fulfills a certain annual quota of titles produced or does not self-publish in order to fully join, when the reality is that self-publishing sometimes is the only option for new underrepresented authors. Other times, certain book awards make sales figures or marketing efforts a determinant factor in awarding prizes, a feat for presses like mine. It is quite the Twilight Zone from this perspective.”
Despite all the hurdles, Laberinto Press, Erregue-Sacchi, and the 22 hyphenated Canadian writers she’s published are slowly shifting the structures of Western narratives—starting right here in Edmonton. It’s a shift Erregue-Sacchi hopes will continue to help shape the answer to “What is Edmonton culture?”
“I hope Laberinto continues to show that difference is experiential, deeply personal, and has value beyond the stereotypical. I want us, as a community, to focus more on the diversity of lived experiences. Someone who writes about their homeland is still an Edmontonian, or an Albertan. It is a ‘very Edmonton’ thing to be a creator from somewhere else. I want Edmonton culture to be a breathing, living organism formed by ever-changing humans, institutions, and groups.”
About Luciana Erregue-Sacchi

Photos and film synopses provided by OUTshine Film Festival
ADAM (U.S., 2019) Director: Rhys Ernst In English
It's 2006 and awkward, self-conscious Adam Freeman has just finished his junior year of high school. His cool older sister Casey (Margaret Qualley) suggests he visit her in New York for the summer. Casey has enthusiastically embraced life amidst Brooklyn's young LGBTQ+ community and invites Adam to tag along with her to queer bars, marriage equality rallies and other happenings. When Adam falls at first sight for Gillian, a smart, beautiful young woman in this new crowd, she mistakenly assumes he is trans. Flummoxed and enamored, he haplessly goes along with her assumption, resulting in an increasingly complex comedy – and tragedy – of errors he's ill-equipped to navigate.
AND THEN WE DANCED (Georgia, Sweden, France, 2019) Director: Levan Akin In Georgian, with English subtitles
Merab is a talented dancer. His burgeoning romance with stage partner Mary is thrown into disarray by the arrival of the magnetic Irakli, leading to a forbidden sexual attraction that recalls those in Moonlight and God's Own Country. Georgia is a country that only celebrated its first LGBTQ+ pride event seven years ago and its society remains conservative. Because of this, And Then We Danced has stirred controversy and many involved remain anonymous out of fear. Amid the potential for socially explosive fireworks, Swedish director of Georgian heritage Levan Akin has captured something uniquely tender and personal.
BENJAMIN (UK, 2019) Director: Simon Amstell In English
In Simon Amstell's affecting, bittersweet comedy, a rising young filmmaker is thrown into emotional turmoil by a burgeoning romance and the upcoming premiere of his second feature. It's perhaps no surprise that the imminent release of Benjamin's sophomore feature plunges him into an existential crisis. In this heightened state of insecurity, even meeting his potential dream match, young French musician Noah, doesn't soothe Benjamin's fears and self-loathing. And that's before he has to screen his film to the merciless film festival audiences. Benjamin is a low-key, intimate film, exposing the contradictions of a creative culture while perfectly balancing drama and comedy.
DEFIANT SOULS (Cuba, Switzerland, 2018) Director: Fernando Pérez and Laura Cazador In Spanish, with English subtitles
Defiant Souls is based on the true story of a woman who, disguised as a man, became the first female surgeon in Latin America. In the early 19th century, Swiss doctor Enrique Faber (Sylvie Testud at her best) travels to Cuba to search for his son, who is said to have been killed in a slave uprising. The local population is jealous of Faber's success as a surgeon and his marriage to Juana, an attractive outsider. Before long, rumors spread regarding his high-pitched voice and his gentle features, and a drama of epic proportions unfolds around one of the most scandalous cases in Cuban colonial history.
EVERYBODY CHANGES (Panama, 2019) Director: Arturo Montenegro In Spanish, with English subtitles
The Ponce Family is the perfect family. They live in the quiet, close-knit mountain town of Bambito, where everyone knows everyone and, unfortunately, everyone knows everyone's business. Frederico is the successful father, Carol the loving mother, and they have three wonderful boys. Despite appearances, perfect might not be the best way to describe the family as Frederico and Carol share a secret: Lizzie, the woman that Frederico has always wanted - no, needed - to be.
FROM ZERO TO I LOVE YOU (U.S., 2019) Director: Doug Spearman In English
Pete Logsdon is just a guy in Philadelphia whose fear of intimacy creates his history of getting involved with married men. His father and his soon-to-be step-mother are on him to settle down and find someone who's actually available. Instead, he finds a man named Jack who is fifteen years into a perfect marriage, has two beautiful children and an enviable wife, and is firmly inside the closet. Could this be the one? Featuring strong chemistry between the leads, director Doug Spearman (Noah's Arc) creates authentic characters in this highly engaging, obstacle-filled romantic comedy.
HAM: A MUSICAL MEMOIR (U.S., 2019) Director: Andrew Putschoegl In English
In this dazzlingly filmed live performance of Sam Harris' award-winning one-man musical, Harris belts out original songs and beloved ballads while playing 11 different roles to tell his own life story - from growing up gay in Oklahoma's Bible Belt to his escape for Los Angeles, where his rendition of "Over the Rainbow" on Star Search led to fame, Broadway, television, platinum records and Carnegie Hall. But after the highs and lows of a life in show business, Sam ultimately learns to ask: when is enough finally enough?
LEONARD SOLOWAY'S BROADWAY (U.S., 2019) Director: Jeff Wolk In English
Through verité documentary footage, humorous storytelling, interviews and archival film material, Leonard Soloway's Broadway captures a Broadway few ever see as told through the eyes of a legendary Broadway producer you've probably never heard of. He lives an unconventional life on his own terms and, over a 70-year span, staged over 100 shows (and counting) which generated history making headlines, over 40 Tony Awards, 62 Tony Nominations, 21 Drama Desk Awards, 29 Drama Desk nominations and 3 Pulitzer Prizes, in addition to launching the careers of famous stars known the world over.
SELL BY (U.S., 2019) Director: Mike Doyle In English
Does every relationship have an expiration date? Adam and Marklin are about to find out. Their 5-year relationship has gone from a passionate flame to a medium burn, forcing them to reconcile with each other's shortcomings all while watching their support network crumble around them. But in this mess, hope springs eternal as they all muddle their way through to try and make life work. Featuring Scott Evans, Augustus Prew, Kate Walsh, and Academy Award nominee Patricia Clarkson, Sell By asks the timeless questions… how do you know who's right for you and how do you know when to let go?
SONG LANG (Vietnam, 2018) Director: Leon Le In Vietnamese, with English subtitles
An unlikely bond develops between hunky, brooding and tough debt collector Dung and Linh Phung, a charismatic young opera singer from a struggling Cai-luong troupe (traditional Vietnamese opera). The two meet when Dung comes to forcefully collect a debt from the opera troupe, but when their paths cross again, a friendship – and then more – develops, awakening surprising, tender feelings in both men. Their story, too, soon scales operatic heights. Director Leon Le has delivered a rich drama, a smoldering relationship between two apparent opposites set against the backdrop of a gorgeous, fading art form. Set in 1980s Saigon, Song Lang is a gritty underworld noir hiding a tender, romantic heart.
STRAIGHT UP (U.S., 2019) Director: James Sweeney In English
The path to relationship bliss is often filled with self-doubt, second guessing and other methods of self-sabotage, but Todd takes this to a whole new level. After all, he is questioning his sexuality… not a good start when forging a new relationship. Todd might be gay. Rory might not care. The result is a neat, romantic-comedy drama with a twist; this is a love story without the thrill of copulation. With wit, humor and poignant moments, coupled with some of the best rapid-fire one-liners in a movie, Straight Up is a feature film about intellectual soul mates.
THE PRINCE (Chile, Argentina, Belgium, 2019) Director: Sebastián Muñoz In Spanish, with English subtitles
Chile, 1970. During a night of heavy drinking, Jaime, a lonely 20-year-old young man, stabs his best friend in what seems a crime of passion. Sentenced to prison, he meets The Stallion, an older and respected man in whom he finds protection and from whom he learns about love and loyalty. Behind bars, Jaime becomes known as The Prince. But as their relationship grows stronger, The Stallion faces the violent power struggles within the prison. The Prince is brutal, raw and cold, yet also beautiful, sincere and honest.
THE SHINY SHRIMPS (France, 2019) Director: Maxime Govare and Cédric Le Gallo In French, with English subtitles
Matthias, an Olympic swimming champion at the end of his career, makes a homophobic statement on TV. His punishment: coach the Shiny Shrimps, a very flamboyant, very bad and very LGBTQ water polo team. They have only one thing in mind: to qualify for the Gay Games in Croatia where the hottest international LGBTQ athletes will compete. It's the start of a bumpy and joyful ride. If the Bad News Bears were a water polo team, and LGBTQ, they would be The Shiny Shrimps. Faster, higher, stronger… and fabulous.
UNSETTLED: SEEKING REFUGE IN AMERICA (U.S., 2019) Director: Tom Shepard In English
A remarkable look at the untold stories of LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers who have fled intense persecution from their home countries and who are resettling in the U.S. The film follows four new arrivals, each of whom have escaped potential peril in their native countries for being different. They've landed in the purported "gay mecca" of San Francisco, yet even there, building a new life in an adopted nation is a precarious undertaking. As new leadership in America continues to restrict immigrants and drastically cuts the flow of refugees and asylum seekers, Unsettled: Seeking Refuge in America humanizes a group about which few people know.
WHERE WE GO FROM HERE (U.S., 2018) Director: Anthony Meindl In English, French, with English subtitles
In Binghamton, an ESL teacher dealing with domestic abuse finds even greater violence at her school. In Orlando, two lovers drifting apart may be separated by the hate of another. In Paris, friends on an introspective night out are caught up in a brutal madness. Three acts of terror disrupt the lives of ordinary people. Will love win out over violence? With gripping performances and storylines all too familiar and frightening, Where We Go From Here is not an easy film to digest nor is it a question easily answered, but both are ultimately worth the effort.

How to Teach Music Reflectively
Reflective teaching is perennial and has become very popular world-wide. See for example the work of Cole (1997), Canada, Hatton and Smith (1995), Australia, Zeichner and Liston (1996), United States, Ghaye and Ghaye (1998), United Kingdom, Day (1999) United Kingdom, Farrell (2001), Singapore, Author, ( 2009) Cayman Islands and Hyrkas, Tarkka and llmonen (2000) Finland.
This world-wide popularity has resulted in an abundance of literature on the practice. Despite this abundance and popularity, there seems to be limited literary sources displaying how to teach music in a reflective manner. To further support this claim, I recently got an email from a colleague from Seoul National University of Education pointing out difficulty in locating literature which clearly displays the activities involved in teaching music in a reflective manner. Therefore, through the use of selected music-teaching vignettes, this column provides some guiding principles on how to teach music reflectively.
Guiding principles for reflective music teaching
Zeichner and Liston (1996) argue that to teach without 'questioning' or 'critically thinking about' your lesson planning, implementation and evaluation processes, 'self' as teacher, and all aspects of the teaching-and-learning dynamics occurring in any educational context, is to teach in a non-reflective manner. A simple analysis of this statement reveals the centrality of 'questioning' or 'critical thinking' to reflective teaching. Based on this, here are a number of guiding principles to which music teachers could adhere, should they wish to carry out their practice in a reflective manner. As indicated above, each principle is supported by an example and/or a vignette.
Question or think critically about all aspects of your lesson before it is taught.
Let me demonstrate this using an example of preparing to teach a classroom instrumental percussion ensemble lesson. My preparation process involves questioning or critically thinking about: songs or sets of rhythms to use as the foundation for the ensemble, ensuring that these are age-appropriate and within the students' present musical capabilities; the kinds and availability of percussion instruments and how various rhythmic patterns may or may not 'work' with the available instruments, and whether students sit or stand to play the instruments during rehearsals and final performance.
Additionally, if tuned percussion instruments are utilized, alternative notation may need to be prepared in advance. Alternate notation is only necessary if students were unfamiliar with standard notations. I also question or critically think about methods of teaching, i.e., would I teach by rote and, if so, which aspects of the lesson lends itself to this method, or will I teach with visual aid or employ demonstrations, and at what point of the teaching-learning process would these be most advantageous to students grasping the concept being taught or the skills to be learned or developed. I would also consider classroom management, strategies for reducing students' disruptive behaviours and students' learning overall.
While the total eradication of all barriers to students' learning is impossible, engaging in a reflective preparation process, as indicated above, helps to eliminate or reduce hindrances to students' acquiring new musical material or new musical skills to be developed or improved.
Question or think critically about your lesson as it is being taught.
Here, a reflective music teacher questions or thinks critically- on the spot, in 'the thick of things'- about what is being taught and the intended outcome, sometimes having to assess, revise, and implement new approaches and activities immediately (Schön, 1983).
The process of developing and 'fine tuning', so as to improve the overall 'sound quality' of a classroom percussion ensemble, will involve discarding or altering rhythmic and melodic patterns. These changes are ordinarily made during actual rehearsals and via the process of questioning or thinking, and, indeed, listening critically 'on the spot in the thick of things' (Schön, 1987) as students practice and/or perform. Vignette 1 below demonstrates this by outlining an episode of implementing a classroom instrumental percussion ensemble, and vignette 2 also demonstrates by using a drum-kit lesson episode.
I worked with grade three students at a local elementary school on a classroom instrumental percussion ensemble. The 'piece' I chose for the foundation of the ensemble was 'Blue Moon' by Richard Rogers. The ensemble was slated to perform during a local children's festival of the arts competition. Having taught different rhythmic and melodic accompaniment patterns by rote to various groups of students, and hearing the groups play together, there was the need to vary the parts to add 'interest' to the performance. This meant varying the use and intensity of various instruments, sound quality and volume. After many hours of listening, questioning or thinking critically during rehearsals, multi alterations to various parts of the ensemble were tried. The process of making changes 'on the spot in the thick of things' via questioning or critical thinking allowed me to get the overall 'sound' I desired. The ensemble played during the festival competition and received a first place award in that category of the competition (Vignette 1).
I taught a group of mixed age and ability students to play the drum-kit. They were taught basic two, three and four drumming patterns. I used the lecture demonstration method of teaching where I spoke about and demonstrated each pattern on the drum-kit. Students then took turns playing each pattern on the kit. All but one was able to play the patterns as demonstrated. As the students took their turns, I questioned or thought critically about possible reasons why that student was unable to play the patterns. I decided (on the spot in the thick of things, (Schön, 1987) to draw the required patterns on sheets of A4 paper and placed these on a music stand, so that the student could see what was required. To my amazement, he was able to play the required patterns when they were not only spoken of and demonstrated, but displayed visually (Vignette 2).
A word of caution: given the nature of the music classroom, it is not possible to question or think critically 'on the spot in the thick of things' about all aspects of the lesson being taught. In such situations, the immediate task at hand or the perceived 'problem' should be the main focus of questioning or critical thinking. Vignette 2 clearly displays this occurrence where one student's inability to play the required patterns became the focus of questioning and critical thinking.
Question or think critically about your lesson after it has been taught.
Post-lesson evaluation is an integral part of lesson development and not an addendum. Through regular evaluation, the teacher is better able to prepare work with students' learning needs in mind and will be able to address individual problems when they arise (Ferris & Hedgcock, 1998).
While all teachers engage in some form of lesson evaluation, the music teacher who engages in this task in a reflective manner will not only question or think critically about all aspects of the taught lesson and how various aspects can be improved the next time it is taught, but also his or her role and involvement.
This process will includes questioning or critically thinking about the degree to which personal teaching philosophies and competence, beliefs and values, his or her own practice, including relationships with students, impacted the lesson, making use of what is learnt to also contribute and inform decision-making, planning, and future action.
As music educators, we can improve our practice by teaching music in a reflective manner. However, we should never miss the important fact that the reason we seek to improve practice is that doing so improves students' learning.

Flexible, Interactive and Fun—Why This Teacher Made the Jump to Tutoring ESL Online
Before becoming a committed full-time online teacher, Abby Ward taught primary school in Ohio for almost six years.
I feel like I am more fun and a more interesting teacher.
-Abby Ward, online ESL tutor
Last spring, Ward watched a Facebook live video about teaching ESL online to Chinese students. She read about the experiences of other online teachers, who described the experience as “interactive” and the curriculum as “fun.” But it was the “immediate bookings, sick days, and cancellation policy that really persuaded me to apply,” she says.
Three weeks after submitting her online application to MagicEars, a Chinese ESL company, Ward taught her first class. Now three months into her new gig, Ward says, “I feel like I am more fun and a more interesting teacher.”
Ward says getting started teaching ESL online is easy; the application process is very straightforward. Here’s what it involves:
Submit an online application form
Schedule a live interview or record a demo class
Attend online training sessions
Teach a trial class
Pass the background check and sign a contract
Start teaching!
Training includes a group session that covers the basics, including how teachers new to ESL can avoid common mistakes. In follow up one-on-one sessions, teachers discuss the platform’s support features, practice sample greetings and games, and learn how to maintain vivid facial expressions and modulate their voice.
What does it take to be an outstanding ESL online tutor?
A stable internet connection.
A love of teaching.
Flexibility, perseverance, and being open to constructive feedback.
A smile. The universal symbol of communicating happiness and joy, it is critical when working with young students.
Teaching and learning ESL online; Source: MagicEars
Educators new to the experience may face a learning curve, says Ward. Early on, she found teaching Chinese students could at times be challenging. Barriers included cultural differences, a lack of familiarity with topics related to Chinese traditions like Tai Chi and Spring Festival, and the time zone gap.
What’s more, teaching online can be a very different experience from teaching offline. In the online classroom, for example, teachers are required to be highly animated. This includes using props—an umbrella when talking about the weather, for example, or a potato when discussing dinosaur eggs. To bolster their skills, online teachers employ TPR (Total Physical Response) to teach concepts, and pay close attention to their own variations in speech and facial expressions.
With MagicEars, specifically, teachers work with four online students in a class session at once. For educators who’ve tutored students one on one, the one to four experience can be a bit intimidating at first. “It took practice and planning to make sure I was reaching every student,” says Ward.
Teachers are able to mix student pairings and nurture real-life conversations, which immerse students in the language and boost vocabulary.
But Ward also believes that the one to four arrangement has clear benefits, creating a dynamic environment that’s more like an energetic group study session than a traditional tutoring appointment. Students have fun. Teachers are able to mix student pairings and nurture real-life conversations, which immerse students in the language and boost vocabulary.
“Learning is very much a social experience,” says Ward. “We learn from our peers, we observe and watch them model skills that we wish to master. But when students begin learning a new language, they sometimes go through a silent phase. They may not speak the new language at all,” she explains. “Instead, students are learning by watching, listening, and observing.” The four-student class supports this learning perfectly.
Ward’s experience has been so positive that this summer she took a leap and left her brick and mortar classroom. She now exclusively teaches ESL online for MagicEars, which recently announced it had raised $18 million from Asia’s largest investment company.

Inside Broadway Club
When I was substitute teaching at Fort Hamilton High one day, I saw a poster on the wall for an Inside Broadway Club and I perked right up! I decided to go find it and see what it was all about.
Turns out, it’s a club created specifically for students in the ESL program as an outlet for them to sing and dance. They have a teaching artist come in once a week for a 10 week residency that culminates in a couple musical numbers to perform at the Multicultural Festival at the school. This particular TA focuses on more hip-hop dance. They were working on a hip hop dance number to a K-Pop song, but later in the program they were going to do a number from In the Heights.
It was fun to watch! These kids had no prior dancing experience (unless they were in the club last year) so they were all learning, but they were all having a fun time! The TA made the material approachable and he was really personable and related to them well. It was great to watch him work and the kids enjoy themselves. This is definitely something I would love to do!!

About Harbin
Harbin, also known as the Ice City, is the birthplace of Mandarin which draws a lot of people to this city to study Chinese. It gets its secondary name, ‘The Ice City’, from the world class Ice and Snow festival it hosts each year and all throughout winter, ice carved lamps are scattered throughout the city. The Harbin greater area boasts some of the best ski fields in China, which can be reached in as little as 40 minutes. A day on the slopes, including transport, gear hire and a ski pass can cost as little as RMB100-150.
A quick search of Harbin will show you pictures of its streets lined in unique Baroque architecture. It has an interesting history and became a boom in the late 19th century, when Russian and Jewish refugees fled to this ‘Paris of the East’ to take refuge.
In the summer everything comes back to life. Beer tents replace the ice-lanterns and offer a refreshing place to cool off from the heat. The city’s gardens turn back to green and the frozen solid river slowly starts shifting icebergs before it’s finally returned to its original water currents.
Why choose a smaller city?
While Pattison's salaries aren't as high as the major cities in China, they're still competitive as Harbin's cost of living is much lower than other cities. Most people generally save more than half of their salary each month and that's including rent, entertainment, food and transport. It also provides you with an opportunity to immerse yourself in Chinese culture and provides plenty of opportunity for you to fine tune your Chinese skills.

While it might be that not all fans of the traditional sports view eSports teams as "real" athletes, the leagues are gaining more followers rapidly. Especially with Twitter's partnership with ESL, the world's largest eSports company, and DreamHack, a huge computer festival. In the beginning of March, Twitter streamed live the Intel Extreme Masters tournaments held in Poland, and there are more events to come. The interest of social media companies a big opportunity for ESL, even though the eSports business is already going strong. Through the partnership the company gets more recognition, gets to widen their scope, and as a result, will be able to gain more eSports followers around the world.
