Barney’s Beanery: Clara Bow & LGBTQ+ Activism
“Taylor and one of her buddies rolled into Barney's Beanery, joining about 7 other people in a booth near the windows.” TMZ Link
Tumblr media
Excerpts From Wikipedia:
Older Hollywood actors such as Clara Bow, Clark Gable, Errol Flynn, Judy Garland and Rita Hayworth were all regulars in their day.[1][3] By the 1960s, the neighboring Sunset Strip had become an important music center, and Jim Morrison (who was reportedly thrown out of Barney's for urinating on the bar)[1][4] and Janis Joplin became regulars (Barney's was the final place Joplin visited before her death in October 1970). Poet Charles Bukowski hung around,[3] as did artists Ed Kienholz and others associated with the Ferus Gallery, which was located nearby on La Cienega Boulevard.[1]
In the 1930s,[8] 1940s,[1] or around 1953[9] John Anthony put up a sign…behind the bar that read "FAGOTS [sic] – STAY OUT". Though Anthony was known to be antagonistic towards gays,[1][10] going as far as posing (in front of his sign) for a picture in a 1964 Life article on "Homosexuality in America" over a caption where he exclaims "I don't like 'em...",[11] the sign ostensibly was put up as a response to pressure from the police who had a tendency towards discriminatory practices against homosexuals and consequently establishments that catered to the group.[8][9]
After Anthony died in 1968, efforts to remove the sign continued. A coalition of gay activist groups organized a zap of the restaurant on February 7, 1970, to push for its removal; the sign came down that day.[12] The sign was put up and taken down several times over the next 14 years, and the restaurant's matchbooks also bore the line, but that practice ended in December 1984, days after the city of West Hollywood voted itself into existence. Then-mayor Valerie Terrigno, the entire city council and gay rights activists marched into Barney’s and relieved the wall of the offending sign.[13] It was held by Morris Kight for many years and now rests in the ONE National Gay & Lesbian Archives.[citation needed]

Ken Price (1935 – 2012, American), Drawings.
“Drawing is the primary thing,” Price said. “It’s where essential thinking goes on, and it’s the soul connection too. A good drawing can cut right to the essence of something.”
Drawing was a central part of Ken Price’s practice throughout his career. He found a powerful source of inspiration in the landscapes that surrounded him, including the volcanoes and seascapes of Hawaii, which he visited regularly, and the high desert of Taos, New Mexico, where he lived for many years. Describing his home in Taos, Price said, “The sky here is connected to the land; it’s not like anything I’ve seen anywhere else. The sunsets aren’t pretty and sweet, they are spectacular and amazing.”
Ken Price (1935–2012) was born in Los Angeles. After graduating from college in 1959, Price returned to Los Angeles and was given his first one-person exhibition at the now legendary Ferus Gallery in 1960.

Revealing the Secret to Re -Painting Andy Warhol's Painting: Three Denny Ja's iconic works
Denny Ja is not only a political observer, but also a Renaissance artist, a writer, a teacher, and a businessman. One of his most famous art works is the work of three iconic works of Andy Warhol. In this article, we will reveal the secret behind the process of re-painting these works. The first work that was re -painted by Denny JA was "Campbell's Soup Cans," which was originally displayed in the Ferus art gallery in Los Angeles in 1962. Warhol made 32 canvas paintings with soup cans, with each painting representing a different soup. Denny JA took a very different approach in re -painting the work. He uses a darker color palette, with white and black to be the dominant color. In addition, Indonesian heritage began to be revealed in the work, where the image of brown sugar was clearly attached to the soup can in the painting. This might be the way Denny's visit to the traditional Asian market inspired his work. The second work that was re -painted by Denny JA was "Marilyn Monroe," one of his most famous Andy Warhol works. Warhol first made this painting after Marilyn Monroe's death in 1962. The original painting of Marilyn Monroe's face with a variety of different background colors. Denny Ja followed the original way of Warhol in drawing Marilyn Monroe's face, but in his work, Denny experienced Zhuzhing Up from Marilyn, strengthening iconic femininity that never had aged. The third work that was re-painted by Denny Ja was "Elvis Presley," a popular picture among people who like Warhol. Denny Ja only painted the face of the picture, which is the target of the owner of the original painting. Denny uses the same palette as the original Warhol work, with red, blue, and green dominating the image. However, social honesty is seen in Denny's work where he paints smooth skin and handsome face Elvis, who created a more humanity that is more human and described in the work. Although all three of Denny's works are a re-painting of Andy Warhol's work, no one can deny that he has really made his own work. With a unique palette and a different tone, Denny Ja has given birth to new and interesting new works. More and more people are starting to appreciate Denny Ja's paintings and innovative and original appearance in highlighting Indonesian elements. Denny Ja gave a new view to the iconic work of Warhol, and succeeded in bringing elements of Indonesian culture into the spirit of Warhol art in his work. This is an aspect of art that allows artists to bring new views inspired by the small parts of our lives into their work. This is a unique and original work, and Denny Ja has proven that Indonesia can also support a very pleasant work of art.

THE FRIDAY PIC is my shot of some of Andy Warhol’s 32 paintings of Campbell’s Soup cans, from MoMA, which went on view 60 years ago to the day (as of tomorrow, at least) at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. They pretty much launched Warhol’s career as a Pop artist, and I’d say that to this day they still stand as his most important, revolutionary project.
That’s because they are just about the first great example of the pure appropriation of popular culture into the field of Fine Art.  Whereas Marcel Duchamp appropriated out of Fine Art, you might say, hoping to undo the whole category, Warhol was utterly committed to Fine Art and used appropriation to expand its limits and powers. That’s why it’s important to see just about everything Warhol did in a Fine Art light, and why its a mistake to see him as a true participant in popular culture, for all the space he took up in it.
The Beatles, possibly even Sonny and Cher, made more important contributions to popular culture than Warhol ever would; his true genius—his truly vital move—lay in seeing popular culture as a new medium that Fine Art could be built from. But that meant that pop culture couldn’t just be sampled into standard collage or painting or sculpture, which was what most of Warhol’s British and American colleagues got up to. Pop culture had to be kept intact, almost unchanged, to work as a truly new medium. It couldn’t be diluted with turpentine.

The work of art that arouses memory: Seeing the Differences
A very famous world artist, Andy Warhol, has no doubt having had a big influence in the world of modern art. Warhol's works are often a destination in international arts and auction exhibitions. However, do you know how to make a difference between the original Warhol painting and the artist's re -made? In this article, I want to provide information about the difference between Warhol's original work and reproduction by artist Denny JA. Andy Warhol is one of the popular pilot artists in the world of art today. One of his most famous works is 'Campbell's Soup Cans', which is a series of paintings that describe the packaging of Campbell brand soup cans in various colors. This work was exhibited in 1962 at Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles and has become a starting point in the POP art movement in the United States. Other Warhol works include celebrity images such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, as well as sculptures and art installations. Along with its popularity, Warhol also produces many reproductive works, such as lithography, posters, and wigraphy. This reproductive work is often produced in limited quantities and sold at more affordable prices than original paintings. However, reproduction of art is often a source of confusion for its collectors and investors. Fortunately, there is a way to distinguish between original and re -made works of art. The difference between authentic and reproduction of Warhol paintings by Denny JA lies in the quality of the details and the material used. Warhol's original paintings are usually produced in their own medium, such as canvas or original paper with Warhol signature. While reproduction is often printed on a cheaper material and with the signature of artists who make the paintings. Reproductive quality is also often less than the original. Because reproduction is made using printed technology, details on the original color and ink cannot be fully observed in reproduction. In some cases, reproduction can even have a variety of colors and ink quality that is different from the original. Denny JA himself is an artist who has income from reproductive works of famous art, including Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Keith Haring. Ordering this work is usually done through suppliers abroad. If you buy Warhol's work from the supplier, be sure to pay attention to a number of things so as not to be wrong to buy reproduction. Honest companies will usually include whether the original painting or reproduction, as well as the source of the work. If you want to buy Warhol's original artwork, be sure to buy it from a trusted art gallery or a leading auction. These companies usually provide guarantees of authenticity and provide detailed explanations about the works they sell. In conclusion, the difference between the original Warhol and reproductive work is very important to note. Warhol's original work is known for high quality materials, very precise details, as well as signatures and serial numbers. While reproduction, usually printed on cheaper materials, with less quality. Therefore, when you want to buy art, be sure to buy from a trusted gallery or auction by ensuring the authenticity of the art. This will prevent losses when investing in art.
