Very interesting + concise article, pertinent with how much I've seen the joke about that "sadness in his eyes you only see in east european gay porn". Warning for pretty much everything you can expect.
Describing the wave of Eastern European gay pornography that flooded the US market following the dissolution of the USSR, Jones said: “They were products of a crude imperialist enterprise: cheap and nasty looking, with an atmosphere of coercion and cultural misunderstanding pervading them. Customers adored these videos, and expressed their breathless admiration whenever given the chance”
It gets pretty rough from here onward.
The Fall… opens with a short clip of a young man in profile, undressing. He looks uncomfortable, alternating between staring forward and glancing in the direction of the camera, his eyes showing a mix of discomfort and contempt. Jones’ voiceover states: “even in an unlikely place, it is possible to find traces of recent history” followed by b-roll taken from the aforementioned porn films including maps of the former USSR, market scenes, beggars and street footage. Their purpose in the aforementioned films appears to be part exoticism and part poverty fetishism, attempting to show the former glory of the Eastern nations as an emphasis on their subsequent fall. They’re an essential part of the set-up, speaking directly to what made this genre of pornography appealing to a western, primarily American, market. It’s easy to comprehend the mixture of exploitation and exoticism that made these videos popular in the US, but Jones goes further, aiming to establish a firm link between the booming Western economy and a more global, less visible form of exploitation.
The latter half of the film compounds the atmosphere of coercion, focusing specifically on the casting and screen tests of performers. The voice from behind the camera probes the subject on their sexual preferences, their motivations for being filmed: “I’m doing it for the money” “That’s a very good reason” Western audiences were turned on by the idea that the performers were under some form of duress—the ostensibly straight man either consuming their sexuality through the guise of pornography, or in the case of several scenes, the performer showing visible discomfort at either the sex or the presence of the camera. The films are low budget, low production value and low brow—by intention, rather than necessity. Jones speculates that the developing Eastern European sex industry, with the influx of Western producers and a Western market in mind, could be seen as an indicator of fertile ground for fascist ideologies—an aspersion confirmed by the global rise of far-right ideologies in tandem with the economic pressure of late-stage capitalism, a point at which more contemporary comparisons can be made.
The brief conclusion on the contemporary form of this exploitation aesthetic is also noteworthy:
In the same way that the fall of communism was exploited by the West, the financial and social insecurity of a generation living in recession, under permanent austerity, is exploited now. The aesthetics utilised in Jones’ film are still broadly present, albeit perhaps in a slightly altered form, now accompanied by a new visual language born from a culture numb to being told to “like, comment, share and subscribe”.

Fantasy Discrimination, and The Implications
A post on my dash reminded me to share some more writing advice, so here is a very good article by @mythcreantsblog , about how to make sure you're not dehumanizing a species or culture in your writing, which is a good guide on how to avoid accidentally writing racist or ableist tropes:
In particular, I want to talk about the ever-present racist trope in a lot of fantasy and scifi fiction, and that is the decision a lot of creators make where the villains are not just a single person, a faction, or a kingdom -- *its an entire species* who is not only the villain, but are outright, inherently *evil*.
To start out, here's a political cartoon by Tom Gauld you've probably seen all around tumblr with the name cropped out:
Tumblr media
[ID: a political cartoon by Tom Gauld, showing two identical cities and boats mirrored on a river, each with a purple or yellow flag; one side is labled "Our Blessed Homeland, Our Glorious Leader, Our Great Religion, Our Noble Populace, Our Heroic Adventuerers", The other side is labled "Their Barbarous Wastes, Their Wicked Despot, Their Primitive Superstition, Their Backwards Savages, Their Brutish Invaders. End ID]
This political cartoon is a very good tool for testing your writing for the trope of demonizing/glorifying your fantasy/scifi species.
Let's use a classic example: your fantasy setting is made up of the following species: Elves, Dwarves, Humans, and Orcs.
Your Elves are a long-lived, ethereal people who live in secluded, perfect cities, all of them tall, blonde, and blue-eyed, who are extremely wise and making plans that can stretch out over dozens of human generations, and they're the deciders of 90% of politics in your world. Your Dwarves are a short, squat, species who spend their lives working in forges, mines, and laboratories, tirelessly toiling (because they enjoy the hard work, of course!) and selling their products to the Elves who are their largest and wealthiest customer base; Dwarves work hard and studiously for decades at a a time to complete a piece of work in order to fufill the intricate orders from their Elven customers, which is how the majority of them provide for their families, working 16 hour shifts each day for decades per order. Your Humans are far more seperated, and often live on the fringes of what their longer-lived compatriots consider "Civilized Society", often living as Subsistence farmers and hunters, not out of choice, but often due to poor land and lack of resources; the wealthiest of Human cities are usually the capitals where the royals reside and may live in luxury with rich markets and high-quality products and running water, but the vast majority of Humans live in small, poor villages that must rely on traveling merchants to sell what produce and livestock they can spare from their farms in order to buy the supplies they need to live out another year. Your Orcs.... well, they don't really live anywhere, do they? Orcs strongholds can only maintain their grip in hellish wastelands where living is nigh impossible, with all food and water only obtained from outside sources; occasionally, Orcs will attempt to establish base camps in more fertile land, invading neighboring Human, Dwarf, and Elven territory to do so, who quickly unite to expel these vile, dark, brutish invaders lest they steal their daughters, destroy and taint all of the natural resources and steal the few jobs available to the Humans in Dwarven and Elven cities as manual labour and servants.
And Now, take a step back from this world, and take a long, hard look at these species (outside of humans who are just kinda there in the middle and the only ones capable of change because Humans Are Always Special) and societies and what ideas are being reinforced here, especially when the above descriptions are framed as Hard Facts which are both Just and True?
(archived read-more Here)
Elves are morally superior and are always Perfect and Correct,
Dwarves are happy to spend their entire lives toiling in the forges and mines to please their Elven patrons,
and Orcs are Evil Monsters who will rob, murder, and rape any hapless victim who comes their way, so it's better to slaughter them all on sight and kick them out of your cities and towns, and this is the 100% correct morally right choice every single time and the narrative and characters themselves support this?
Did you spot them already, or does the above just seem like a cool, fun fantasy world where Elves are the cool wise good guys and Orcs are the devil's army and can be used as canon fodder any time your main character needs to mow down some enemies for a Badass Scene?
Let's retrace our steps a bit, shall we, and examine this "perfect" world through a critical lens?
When your elves are all portrayed as Perfect Ethereally Beautiful Blonde and Blue-Eyed wise leaders of the civilized world, what idea is being reinforced here? Who does it harm, and what real world ideas is this mirroring and enforcing? Who is going to have their own biases reinforced by this narrative?
When only the longest-lived people are allowed to decide politics, what group biases are being enforced? Is portraying "young people" as "being incapable of making political decisions" as a correct, logical choice in your story something you wish to enforce? Are there any real world issues this trope mirrors?
When your Dwarves are all Happy Workers and Slaves, bound to and reliant on the superior Elves to live, spending the majority of their life purely in service to these Superior Beings while happy to do it, what idea is being reinforced here? Who might see themselves in the plight of the Dwarves and feel alienated and insulted by the Dwarves happily slaving away in the dark? Who might have biased ideas reinforced by seeing the Dwarves treated in such a way?
When your Orcs are portrayed as evil, dark skinned, brutish savages who will kidnap and rape poor helpless women from the "pure" species, when Orcs are incapable of creating anything of their own and can only steal, what racist messages are being enforced and upheld? Who are the real people and cultures being demonized when you perpetuate this? What real world peoples and cultures have faced *decades of propaganda framing them as such*?
If you spotted these harmful messages in the initial indented description, good job!
But if you didn't, it's time to find and read critical reviews and essays written by marginalized communities of works that include these damaging tropes, because if it your Evil Species are Weird Aliens, because when you characterize and describe your Evil Species, you are undoubtedly going to be drawing heavily on your own internal biases of what makes people Other and Wrong.
Are your Evil Species all dark-skinned, physically-strong and animalistic? Congrats, you have just regurgitated centuries-old racism that justifies slavery, segregation, and discrimination *to this day*
Are your Evil Species all nomadic ~cannibals~ who are incapable of creating anything of their own and have to loot and steal from others to have anything of value? Congrats, you are once again regurgitating racist propoganda that has been used against countless cultures and minorities for centuries.
Are your Evil Species reknowned for kidnapping and raping the women of your Good Guys in order to create Evil Twisted Halfbreed Offspring for ....uh, reasons? Congrats, once again, this is literally just racist propaganda being reinforced by your writing.
Anything you come up with to make your Species Inherently Evil is going to most likely be something that is weaponized against real world minorities that you are now reinforcing with your writing, from racism to ableism to queerphobia and all the ways they intersect.
How do you fix this?
It's incredibly simple!
Don't make an entire Species be Inherently Evil.
They need to be just as varied as real living people.
Your Species should not be a Monolith, let alone of *Evil*.
Your Species should not have their only "decent/civilized/kind people" examples come from ""crossbreeds"" [and this term itself should be used only by bigots as a deragatory term] or random orphans who were raised by one of the Good Species(tm)-- this is how your story starts advocating for *eugenics*, which is not something you want to do!
So, instead of having an entire Species be "Inherently biologically" Evil, consider instead:
Making your villain group diverse instead of all one Species.
if your villain group is a Species Supremacist, they're probably still going to have underlings and lower castes who do their dirty work, or have been taken in by the cult ideology.
Making the villains of this Species be a small fraction of a larger whole, who are part of a violent cult, ideology, or political party that not only puts them in conflict with your main characters, but also with the rest of their Species.
Having your main character or their friends be the same Species as your villain group, and they represents the vast majority of the Species, instead of hailing them as "the Paragon of Goodness who emerged somehow pure from of a species forged in hell" or anything similar.
You should also sit down and not only think about the harmful, racist tropes that would come from writing Inherently Evil Species, but also consider:
Why do you want to include an entire species of people who are inherently evil in your novel?
Is your novel gaining anything for including these tropes uncritically?
Does it make it a better, more interesting story to include these tropes uncritically?
What message are you trying to send with your story?
Does including these tropes uncritically in your story *undermine* your intended message?
Another trope in the opposite direction, is talking about "Oppression" and "Fantasy Racism" from the perspective of a character who is part of the oppressed minority, only to spend the entire novel talking about how your Opressed Class are Literally and Factually threats to the population that "discriminate" against them, usually by being rightfully wary in their prescence.
if the Oppressed Minorities in your story in anyway resemble the Orcs in Bright, the Predators in Zootopia, or the Khajiit in the Elderscrolls, where the Racism these peoples face in based on hard proven facts that these people have been and still are threats to most of the population..
... you're less writing a story about how "Racism Against Vulnerable Minorities is Bad"
and sound more like you're saying
"It's bad to be "mean" (afraid of) Nazis who literally want you dead and who can kill you with impunity and no consequences."
If you are writing a story about Fantasy Discrimination, and the basis of your Fantasy Discrimination is based on *cold hard facts that your narrative supports and upholds*, instead of actually basing it on and talking about what leads to discrimination in the real world
(xenophobia and the fear+hatred of The Other, economic gain, mainly),
then you are not making the progressive stance that you think you are, and instead are enforcing the ancient propoganda that racism is based on fact, that racism is "for a good reason", and you need to take care that you are not upholding this idea in your works.
TL;DR:
Instead of making an entire Species of people a trope of Wise Good Guys or Evil Incarnate, consider using *Factions not Races* for your groups, and think long and hard about the implications of your world's politics and how it mirrors our own world, especially in ways *you may not intend it to.* If your story is meant to be progressive and inclusive, but your villains are an entire race of black orcs who slave and rape the good guys species, you need to go back to the drawing board.

It Had To Be You Masterlist
Tumblr media
How?
You had taken every precaution and painstakingly logged your cycle every single day. An IUD, sex during a low fertile week, and a condom to seal the deal.
And yet.
After five tests with the same result, you held onto the denial for as long as you could. The phone call from the gynecologist to confirm that yes you are pregnant, was enough to seal the earth shattering deal.
Pregnant.
This had to be a mistake. Even with your occasional trysts and short lived relationships, you didn’t have one slip up or scare. But a drunken night five weeks ago so blurry that you could barely remember seemed to have been the final straw in your streak of good luck.
The steering wheel suddenly felt incredibly hot as you gripped the leather tighter. You pressed your forehead to wheel, squeezing your eyes tight and forcing a slow breath from your lungs. The morning sun beaming into the car window was too bright, the air conditioning blowing through the vents too cold against your skin, your thoughts too incessant, too anxious, too loud.
It wasn’t that you were against having children. At twenty-nine years old, you were coasting steady in life. Magna Cum Laude in marketing from one of the best universities in Sendai, an internship that blossomed into a full-time job, and after years of overtime and grasping every opportunity you could, you’re now a Marketing Specialist of one of the best firms in the city. You had a sizeable income from years of working hard and saving, a small but cozy house that you fixed yourself, and the freedom to actually do the things you wanted.
But this was a big step. A step that you wanted to follow a certain way if you could help it. A serious relationship, marriage, and maybe a kid or two.
Now? When you were this close to a promotion, when your mother was finally showing a modicum of pride in you, and you had your vacation planned?
It was too much, everything was too much, too intense, too fucking loud.
The sharp vibration of your cellphone the cup holder jolted you from your thoughts and back into cold, hard reality. Work. You can deal with this later.
Omelia: I got the latte you wanted and its sitting neglected on your desk. Where are you.
You're being dramatic.
Omelia: I wont be dramatic when I say no the next time you ask me for coffee.
I just parked. I’ll be right up. Keep calm until I get there.
Omelia: 🙄
You shook out another breath, pushing away from the steering wheel and smoothing a hand down your white button up blouse.
“You can do this. It’s going to be just fine.”
By the time the elevator dinged on the thirtieth floor of the skyrise building in the middle of downtown Sendai, your nerves weren’t as frayed. The anxiety still buzzed against your skin as you walked past various cubicles, smiling kindly to your coworkers before hitting the stretch of office doors that led to your own. There were days when you wished you were in a cubicle again. It was easier to meet others and socialize, forming a small family of the same people year after year. But the more you volunteered to stay after hours to assist for projects and the more your boss recommended you for opportunities you had only dreamed of, the less you saw your coworkers. But you tried to stay engage as much as you could, eating lunch with them, going out for dinner and drinks.
But you guess that would have to change soon.
“I used my rage to reheat it for you.”
Omelia’s low and raspy voice was a welcome distraction to the current thoughts in your head as you closed the office door behind you. Perched in an office chair across from your desk, the usual silver-eyed glower from your best friend stared holes into your skin. Even petite in nature, she was the most intimidating but also the most beautiful person you had ever met. You couldn’t be envious of her. Since meeting her in second grade, she was often chased by boys. When they pulled her thick kinky hair as a means of flirting, she responded with a punch to the gut that always ended her in the office and her mother’s usual response was to take her out for ice cream instead because she shouldn’t be punished for stopping boys using violence as a means to show affection. But as you both got older, her violence morphed into carefully calculated sarcasm capable of cutting anyone down before they could do the same to her. But you were never afraid of her mean words, because when you’re the only two black females in your second grade class, you naturally gravitated to each other. And being able to gauge her emotions behind her words always helped you understand her more.
You reached for the cup and hesitated, the anxious thoughts of the effects of caffeine and fetal development flashing through your mind before you ultimately gave up.
Her eyes narrowed, silver orbs laser focused and analyzing body language as you sipped the latte, the usual caramel flavor hitting your tongue.
“Ah yes, I can still feel the rage. Thank you.”
“It’s rare when you’re late and you usually text me if you’re gonna be.”
You shrug, setting your Michael Khors purse on your desk before sagging into the ergonomic chair.
“Forgive me for my transgressions.” She rolled her eyes at your attempt of a joke, crossing elegant skirt clad legs before sighing slowly. “I know you hate mornings Ome, but this level of disappointment is rarely directed at me. What’s wrong?”
She didn’t speak for a moment, opening her mouth and closing repeatedly, full lipgloss covered lips puckering to form words before she shook out another disappointed sigh.
“I’m sorry. Just boyfriend troubles and I’m taking it out on everyone I see. I’m so close to just dumping the fucker.”
“Then do it?”
It was no lie that Ome had more than had it with her three year on again-off again relationship. Years of short lived jobs, lack of interest in her or her family, and the latest cheating stint, she was ready to call it quits. But why she hasn’t, you’ll never know.
Maybe she doesn’t want to be alone. Having stone walls around you for most of your life will do that you imagine.
You hesitated again before taking another sip.
How much caffeine is too much? 50 mg? 200?? Your stomach lurched painfully, the sharp pang of nausea making your mouth water. You’ve been drinking three cups of coffee every day for the past five weeks.
Oh God.
“Y/n.” Ome’s voice rang in you ear, cutting through the loud echo of thoughts. Her gaze was less harsh this time, concern softening her ethereal features. “You good?”
You smiled at her, pushing the coffee away.
“I’m good.”
***
It turns out that you in fact were not good. Because every little thing seemed to send your mind into a frenzy. You spaced out at every meeting as you thought about just all you needed to prepare for.
College fund. Daycare. Medical care. Baby clothes. Furniture (baby furniture?). Telling your fucking mother.
You couldn’t eat your salad because you were curled over your phone instead, googling every ingredient to make sure nothing was toxic.
You couldn’t look your coworkers in the eye because you could feel the waves of irrationality in your mind as you imagined their disgusted filled stares as they looked at your stomach.
No matter where you went or what you did, everything seemed to set your mind off.
How much do babies even cost?
The thought made you groan softly, your stomach taking what felt like the millionth backflip of the day.
“Are you alright?”
You blinked, face heating instantly in embarrassment as you looked up at your boss. Jin Itadori’s glasses sat perched on his nose as he looked at you curiously, dark brown eyes soft but filled with concern.
“I-I’m. Yes, I’m alright. Sorry it’s been a weird day. I meant no disrespect, Itadori-san.”
He chuckled in reply, hands folding on his desk as he smiled softly at you. Jin was probably the nicest boss ever. He was always soft smiles, an even softer voice, and a demeanor that made others relax instead of stiffening in his presence. But despite his demeanor, he had revamped the entire marketing department fresh out of college, brought in triple the revenue the company had ever seen, and usurped the previous boss’ position in less than three years to become Director of Marketing Operations for the Sendai branch. He was serious about his work and refused to let anyone walk over him or his colleagues. And he was one of the few people who didn’t judge you by how you looked and instead admired your work ethic, your personality, and your goals.
So to zone out in the middle of a one on one with him was completely out of character.
“You’re not disrespecting me. You’re always so formal, please relax. I can tell you have a lot on your mind. Do you need to take a few days off?”
You shook your head. “No sir. Or at least I’m not sure yet. I’ll let you know.”
He pursed his lips before looking down at his planner. “Well, what I was saying is that our latest project will be our heaviest yet. It’s going to take a lot of work, a lot of attention to detail and therefore collaboration with others outside of our company. The branch in Tokyo that held the annual summit a few weeks ago has reached out and would like to be included.”
Ice cold water felt like it had been doused down your back, your nerves jolting in shock. Of all the branches, why Tokyo? Niigata’s branch was good. Albeit, not as big and popular and well known as Tokyo, but still good.
“We’ve projected about a year from start to finish. I wanted to visit Tokyo next week to begin initial talks, create a plan, statements of work, you know the whole spiel. I want you there.”
The anxiety washed away for just a second, your heart pumping at yet another opportunity to get your foot in the door.
“Of course. I would be honored to be apart of this sir.”
“Yaga was especially impressed with your work ethic last month and insists on your presence.” He smiled again at you, his kindness radiating off his skin and made your shoulders relax slightly. “You’re a great person on this team and I wouldn’t have anyone else. I’ll have details to you by end of day.”
***
Your happiness had slowly melted away by the time you made if back to your office and sagged into your chair.
It was a great opportunity. The assistant to the leader of a large multiple branch project? The best thing to come into your lap in a while.
You’ve worked so hard for this. Another step closer.
But the fear of your future, the anxiety of something you had no contingency plan for, the frustration and sadness of having to do this alone was just too palpable to ignore.
Meetings that you would have to reschedule because of OB appointments. Money that you would have to rearrange to plan for a life you didn’t intend to nourish this soon. Disappointment that you would have to swallow from Jin when you told him that you would have to take maternity leave and someone else would have to fill your place.
It was too much. You’re not ready. You’re not fucking ready.
The door to your office opened before you could have another thought.
“Oh my god, if he texts me again I’m going to fucking scream y/n—” Ome paused, her hand on the doorknob as she looked at you softly. “Why are you crying?”
You reached for your face quickly, fingers touching the wetness on your cheeks before you pulled them away to look at the tears on your fingertips. Ome closed the door softly and walked to you, her hand resting on the side of your neck.
“Tell me.”
You should have said something as soon as you walked in the office this morning. You could never go long without telling her your thoughts. But from the moment you hung up the phone with the gynecologist in your car until right now, you’ve been on auto pilot. So much turbulence, but on auto-pilot all the same.
Your vision blurred as you looked up at her, her face distorted through your tears.
“I’m pregnant.”
Finally saying it out loud seemed to be the final nail in the coffin as you hiccupped harshly and broke down in front of her. She knelt down immediately, pulling you into her embrace and pressing your face into her blouse as you sobbed loudly into the soft fabric.
Accidents happen and you can never truly be prepared for a pregnancy. You wouldn’t get rid of it. While you weren’t against that choice, the thought of doing so only made you feel worse. But you thought you would at least be with someone when the surprise came.
But that one drunken night five weeks ago changed everything. His glares during a night out with coworkers were dulled by the many shots of sake you took and started the course of a path you didn’t even want to imagine him being the catalyst of.
Because the first day you met him, he was quick to judge and cut you down with words that made you swear you would never foster a stupid work crush again.
Of all the men it could have been.
It had to be Nanami fucking Kento.

Aetna, a subsidiary of CVS Health, announced the landmark change its intrauterine insemination (IUI) policy on Tuesday (27 August). Members can access the benefit as a test of fertility and, in some cases, to increase the chances of pregnancy.
“Expanding IUI coverage is yet another demonstration of Aetna’s commitment to women’s health across all communities, including LGBTQ+ and unpartnered people,” the company’s chief medical officer, Cathy Moffitt, said.
“This industry-leading policy change is a stake in the ground, reflecting Aetna’s support of all who need to use this benefit as a preliminary step in building their family.”
Aetna is one of the United States’ largest medical insurance providers, serving over 35 million people and when combined with the rest of CVS Health, makes up 11 per cent of the market share.

The cost of the biological clock for women in the marriage market
Both men and women value the income of a potential marriage partner. But most men also have a preference for a younger spouse. This means that in the marriage market, women face a trade-off between age and earnings, since earnings typically rise with age. In a new paper drawing on data from real online daters, Corinne Low finds that for every year a woman ages, she needs to earn $7,000 more annually to remain equally attractive on the marriage market. These preferences of men seem largely to be driven by questions over fertility: Low shows that men who already have children, or have limited knowledge of the age-fertility relationship (specifically, believing wrongly that female fertility doesn’t decline until 45), do not have the same preferences for younger women. Low’s paper highlights the increasing complexity of marriage markets, and the sharper trade-offs that are faced by women because of sex differences in the relationship between age and fertility.
Higher minimum wages result in better care in nursing homes
Higher minimum wages have been shown to be good for consumers, for example by improving the quality of produced goods – where quality improvements are relatively easy to measure. But what about in a service sector environment? Krista Ruffini examines the impact of higher wages on quality of service in nursing homes. She shows that an increase in the minimum wage nudges up earnings by 1% to 2% and reduces staff turnover. The minimum wage increases seemed to improve outcomes for clients too, with fewer health inspections, a drop in the number of moderate-to-severe pressure ulcers, and lowered mortality. Of note, however, was a slight fall in the share of Medicaid patients (equivalent to 0.3 fewer in a 100 bed facility following a 10% minimum wage increase), almost certainly to offset higher labor costs with more clients paying out of pocket.
Joint taxation and Social Security benefits for spouses significantly lower female employment
Are taxes and benefits for married couples reducing the incentives for women to be in the labor force? Margherita Borella and co-authors use data from the Panel Study of Income Dynamics and the Health and Retirement Study, with a focus on the 1941-1945 and 1951-1955 birth cohorts, to answer this question. They highlight two major factors influencing labor decisions for married women. First, second-earner spouses, historically women, face a higher marginal tax rate when filing taxes jointly. Second, they are eligible for Social Security spousal and survivor benefits based on the past contributions of their spouse. Taken together, these create significant disincentives to employment. Their model finds, for example, that eliminating both Social Security spousal and survivor benefits as well as joint income taxation for the 1945 cohort would raise labor force participation by 20 percentage points for married women over 25, and by five percentage points for single women. They find similar results for those born a decade later, and with even larger general welfare gains because of higher levels of human capital for women in this cohort.
Top chart: Time spent on child care by socioeconomic status
In a paper for the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Sarah Flood and co-authors look at time spent on caring for children by education and socioeconomic status. Parents with higher levels of education spend fewer overall hours on child care but spend a little more time on “direct” child care activities such as playing and reading.

Choice opinion: Are standardized tests racist, or are they anti-racist
“These days universities often claim to have goals of inclusion. They talk about the value of educating not just children of the elite, but a diverse cross-section of the population. Instead of searching for and admitting students who have already had tremendous advantages and specifically excluding nearly everyone else, these schools could try to recruit and educate the kinds of students who have not had remarkable educational opportunities in the past,” writes Neil Lewis Jr. in The Atlantic.
Self-promotion: More students are enrolling in college, but gaps in academic preparation still persist.
Young adults today are more likely to enroll in college than in previous generations, but there are still significant gaps by race, gender, and socioeconomic background. Sarah Reber and Ember Smith use the High School Longitudinal Survey to look at these disparities in two-year and four-year college enrollment and examine how factors such as GPA and test scores affect student enrollment. They find that students with higher GPAs and better test scores are more likely to enroll, and that enrollment gaps by race and gender are quite small once among students with similar test scores and levels of academic preparation.

Crack the Code: GBPAUD Triple Top Secrets for Big Gains The Triple Threat: Mastering the GBPAUD Triple Top Like a Pro Forex trading can sometimes feel like navigating a maze blindfolded. But every so often, a tried-and-true pattern emerges from the chaos to light the way. Enter the triple top on the GBPAUD pair—a formation that’s as rare as it is rewarding when properly handled. In this post, we’ll dig deep into the nuances of this pattern, uncover hidden strategies, and share actionable insights that could revolutionize your trading game. Ready to learn the secrets pros don’t want you to know? Let’s dive in. What Exactly Is a Triple Top? (And Why Should You Care?) A triple top is a bearish reversal pattern that forms after an uptrend, signaling that the price is struggling to break a resistance level on three separate attempts. Imagine a stubborn cat trying to jump on a high shelf—after three failed tries, it gives up and looks for another way (probably to your dismay). Similarly, the market hits resistance thrice, fails, and begins to reverse downward. Why is this significant for the GBPAUD pair? Because this currency pair is notorious for wild swings, making it fertile ground for patterns like the triple top to develop and play out with precision. The Anatomy of a GBPAUD Triple Top Let’s break it down step by step: - The Three Peaks: - Price tests a resistance level three times without breaking it. - Each peak is roughly at the same price level, forming a neat visual on the chart. - This is the “red alert” zone for reversal traders. - The Neckline: - A horizontal support level forms at the lowest point between the peaks. - The magic happens when the price breaks below this line. - Confirmation: - A confirmed triple top occurs when the price breaks the neckline with significant volume. This is your green light to jump in. Pro Tip: Look for confluence. Pair the triple top with other indicators like RSI divergence or bearish candlestick patterns to increase your confidence. Why Most Traders Miss the Triple Top Opportunity Here’s the truth: spotting a triple top is one thing; trading it profitably is another. Many traders either jump in too early or wait too long, letting the opportunity slip away like sand through their fingers. Common Mistakes: - Mistaking a Double Top for a Triple Top: Patience is key. If the third peak hasn’t formed yet, you’re jumping the gun. - Ignoring Volume: Without strong volume during the neckline break, the pattern could fail. - Neglecting Risk Management: Trading without a stop-loss? That’s like driving without brakes. Don’t do it. Ninja Tactic: When the neckline breaks, wait for a retest before entering your position. This reduces false breakout risks and ensures a better risk-to-reward ratio. Elite Tactics for Trading the GBPAUD Triple Top Now let’s get into the juicy stuff. These advanced strategies will help you master the GBPAUD triple top like a pro: 1. Use Fibonacci Levels for Precision Overlay Fibonacci retracement levels on the triple top formation. Often, the neckline aligns with key Fib levels like 38.2% or 50%, providing additional confirmation. 2. Deploy Multi-Timeframe Analysis Check the triple top’s development on higher timeframes (e.g., 4-hour or daily charts) to confirm its validity. Then, fine-tune your entry on lower timeframes (e.g., 15-minute or 1-hour charts). 3. Leverage News Events GBPAUD is highly sensitive to economic data and central bank decisions. Watch for news that could act as a catalyst, such as Australian employment data or UK inflation reports. 4. Monitor Correlated Pairs The GBPAUD’s movement often correlates with other GBP or AUD pairs. Analyze their charts for similar patterns to validate your setup. Case Study: How a Trader Nailed a Triple Top on GBPAUD In mid-2023, the GBPAUD chart showcased a textbook triple top on the daily timeframe. Here’s how one savvy trader capitalized: - The Setup: The resistance level at 1.9000 held firm through three attempts. - Confirmation: The neckline at 1.8800 broke on strong volume, confirmed by RSI divergence. - Execution: The trader entered a short position after a retest of the neckline. - Outcome: The trade captured a massive 300-pip move as the pair plummeted to 1.8500. Moral of the story? Preparation meets opportunity—and a little bit of guts. Advanced Risk Management for the Triple Top 1. Set Tight Stop-Losses: Place your stop-loss just above the last peak to limit downside risk. 2. Use a Trailing Stop: Lock in profits as the trade moves in your favor. 3. Risk 1-2% Per Trade: Don’t let greed cloud your judgment. Consistency wins the game. 4. Predefine Your Targets: Aim for at least a 2:1 risk-to-reward ratio. For the GBPAUD triple top, your target should align with the height of the pattern projected downward. Your Next Move Trading the GBPAUD triple top isn’t just about spotting the pattern—it’s about executing with precision and discipline. Here’s how you can start: - Stay Updated: Get real-time news and insights at StarseedFX Forex News. - Master the Basics: Take advantage of Free Forex Courses to sharpen your skills. - Join the Community: Connect with elite traders for daily alerts and insider tips at StarseedFX Community. - Track Your Progress: Optimize your strategy with a Free Trading Journal. Additionally, the rising costs of fertilizers, labor, and transportation in the agricultural sector can further escalate raw material prices, impacting the overall cost structure for pectin manufacturers.
Get Real time Prices for Pectin: https://www.chemanalyst.com/Pricing-data/pectin-1517
Global demand for pectin continues to rise, driven by its diverse applications. In the food and beverage industry, pectin is widely used as a gelling agent, stabilizer, and thickener in products such as jams, jellies, dairy items, and beverages. The growing preference for plant-based and vegan products has also contributed to the increased usage of pectin, as it serves as an excellent alternative to animal-derived gelatin. This surging demand exerts upward pressure on prices, particularly during periods of limited supply. Furthermore, consumer awareness regarding the health benefits of pectin, including its role in promoting digestive health and lowering cholesterol levels, has amplified its demand in the nutraceutical and functional food sectors, further influencing market pricing.
On the supply side, the production process for pectin involves a series of steps, including extraction, purification, and drying, all of which require significant energy and resources. Energy costs, therefore, play a crucial role in determining the final price of pectin. Fluctuations in energy prices, whether due to geopolitical tensions or shifts in global oil markets, can directly affect production costs and, consequently, market prices. Additionally, technological advancements in pectin extraction and processing have led to efficiency improvements, potentially offsetting some cost increases. However, the adoption of such technologies often requires substantial capital investment, which can also influence pricing trends.
The regulatory environment is another critical factor shaping the pectin market. Stricter food safety regulations and quality standards imposed by authorities in various countries can lead to increased compliance costs for manufacturers. For instance, ensuring that pectin products meet clean-label criteria and are free from contaminants requires rigorous testing and quality assurance processes, which can add to production expenses. These regulatory requirements, while ensuring product safety and quality, can contribute to higher prices for end consumers.
The global pectin market is also impacted by trade dynamics and currency fluctuations. Many of the leading pectin manufacturers are based in Europe, which accounts for a significant share of global production. Export activities are influenced by exchange rate variations, tariffs, and international trade policies. For instance, a weakening of the euro against other major currencies can make European pectin exports more competitive, potentially affecting global pricing. Conversely, trade restrictions or tariff impositions can disrupt supply chains and create price volatility.
Emerging markets, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Latin America, have shown substantial growth potential for pectin. Increasing urbanization, rising disposable incomes, and changing dietary habits in these regions are driving demand for processed and convenience foods, many of which incorporate pectin as a key ingredient. Additionally, the growing pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries in these regions contribute to the expanding application scope of pectin. This robust demand growth presents opportunities for market expansion but also creates competitive pressures that can influence pricing strategies.
The competitive landscape of the pectin market features both established players and new entrants, each striving to capture market share through product innovation, strategic partnerships, and capacity expansion. Leading companies are focusing on developing high-quality pectin products with enhanced functionalities to cater to evolving consumer needs. For example, low-sugar and low-methoxyl pectin variants are gaining popularity due to their suitability for health-conscious and diabetic consumers. Such innovations, while addressing market demand, often involve higher research and development expenditures, contributing to cost considerations and pricing decisions.
In conclusion, the pectin market is shaped by a complex interplay of factors, including raw material availability, production costs, regulatory frameworks, and consumer demand. While the market continues to grow, driven by its versatile applications and increasing consumer awareness, the challenges associated with supply chain management, cost fluctuations, and compliance requirements remain significant. As industry stakeholders navigate these dynamics, the focus on sustainability, innovation, and efficiency will play a crucial role in determining the future trajectory of pectin prices and market trends.

Unlocking the Value of Farmland: A Smart Investor’s Guide
Tumblr media
Investing in farmland is increasingly seen as a smart strategy for diversifying a portfolio and providing stable, long-term returns. Farmland offers a unique opportunity to own an asset that produces income through agricultural production, lease agreements, or both. As global populations grow and the demand for food increases, farmland is poised to remain a valuable asset. However, successfully investing in farmland requires a clear understanding of how to assess its value, manage risks, and make informed investment choices. This guide will explore the different ways to invest in farmland, the risks involved, and strategies for maximizing returns on farmland investments.
Understanding Farmland as an Investment
Farmland is an investment that offers tangible value, unlike stocks or bonds. The land itself generates income, primarily from agricultural activities like crop production or livestock. Historically, farmland has proven to be a stable investment, with steady long-term appreciation. The value of farmland is driven by several factors, including soil quality, climate, water availability, and proximity to key markets. Moreover, farmland can provide investors with a consistent stream of income, either by leasing the land to farmers or through direct agricultural operations. In addition to the income it generates, farmland has historically been a good hedge against inflation, as the value of land and agricultural products tends to rise when inflation increases. Farmland also provides diversification benefits for investors who are looking to reduce the overall risk in their portfolios.
Ways to Invest in Farmland
Investors interested in farmland have several options to consider. One of the most direct approaches is to purchase farmland outright. This method offers full control over the land, allowing investors to manage the property, rent it out, or even operate it themselves. However, purchasing farmland requires a significant upfront capital investment and the expertise to manage the land effectively. For those who prefer a more passive approach, farmland real estate investment trusts (REITs) are a great option. These publicly traded companies specialize in owning and leasing farmland. By purchasing shares in farmland REITs, investors can gain exposure to agricultural real estate without having to manage the land directly.
Another option is to invest through farmland investment platforms, such as AcreTrader or FarmTogether, which allow investors to purchase shares in specific farmland properties. These platforms often lower the barrier to entry, allowing investors to buy into farmland with smaller amounts of capital. For those looking for more diversified exposure, agricultural investment funds provide an opportunity to pool capital with other investors to acquire and manage farmland. These funds often focus on multiple crops or regions, spreading the risk across different agricultural assets.
Key Factors to Evaluate Before Investing
Before committing to farmland investment, there are several important factors to evaluate to ensure the land’s value and income-generating potential. One of the most crucial elements is location. Farmland near infrastructure like transportation networks and major markets typically sees better returns due to easier access for transporting goods. Furthermore, favorable climate conditions and access to water are vital for ensuring consistent and reliable crop production. Water availability, in particular, plays a huge role in farmland value, especially in areas where irrigation is necessary.
Soil quality is another critical factor that impacts farmland’s productivity. Fertile, nutrient-rich soil supports higher crop yields, directly affecting the land’s profitability. Soil tests can provide valuable insights into the potential of a particular property, allowing investors to make informed decisions. It’s also important to consider market trends and the demand for specific crops in the area. Understanding regional agricultural trends can help determine whether the investment is likely to yield high returns or face significant market risks.
Benefits of Farmland Investments
Investing in farmland offers several distinct advantages. One of the most significant benefits is its stable return potential. Unlike stocks and bonds, which can fluctuate wildly, farmland typically provides steady returns through agricultural production or lease agreements. Additionally, farmland acts as a hedge against inflation. As food prices rise and demand for agricultural goods increases, the value of farmland tends to follow suit. This makes farmland an attractive option for investors looking for a reliable asset that performs well over time.
Farmland is also a tangible asset, unlike more abstract investments. This provides investors with the confidence that their investment is backed by physical land with inherent value. Moreover, farmland offers tax advantages in many regions. For example, the IRS allows depreciation on farmland, which can offset income from the property and reduce taxable income. Some regions even offer tax incentives for sustainable farming practices or for maintaining agricultural land for conservation purposes.
Risks to Consider
While farmland is generally seen as a stable and profitable investment, it’s not without risks. One significant risk is the operational challenge of farming. Weather conditions, pest infestations, and crop diseases can directly affect the success of agricultural operations. Even with optimal planning, there’s always a level of uncertainty regarding crop yields. Fluctuating commodity prices also pose a risk, as changes in the price of crops can impact the income derived from farming activities.
Additionally, land value can be affected by external factors such as economic downturns, changes in land-use regulations, or shifts in local agricultural policies. These factors can impact the long-term value of the land and its ability to generate income. Farmland is also a relatively illiquid investment. Unlike stocks or bonds, it can take time to sell farmland and realize profits, especially during market downturns.
Strategies to Unlock Farmland Value
To maximize the value of farmland, investors can employ various strategies. One common approach is leasing the land to experienced farmers. This allows investors to earn passive income while leaving the day-to-day management of farming operations to the lessee. Another strategy is to diversify the crops grown on the land or even introduce livestock. This can help protect against market fluctuations and improve overall profitability.
Investors can also look into value-added practices, such as implementing sustainable farming techniques, offering agrotourism opportunities, or obtaining organic certification. These practices can help boost the land's value and appeal to consumers who are increasingly focused on sustainability. Moreover, technology can play a key role in increasing farmland productivity. Integrating precision farming tools and systems can optimize yields and resource use, enhancing profitability.
Tax Considerations for Farmland Investors
Farmland investors should also be aware of potential tax benefits. Farmland is eligible for depreciation, which allows investors to deduct a portion of the land’s value each year. These deductions can significantly reduce taxable income from the property, improving cash flow. In addition, some regions offer tax incentives for land conservation, organic farming, or other environmentally-friendly practices. These tax benefits make farmland an appealing investment from a financial standpoint, but it’s essential to consult with a tax advisor to understand specific benefits based on the location and type of land.
How to Unlock Farmland Value
Purchase farmland for leasing or direct farming.
Invest through REITs or crowdfunding platforms.
Evaluate soil quality, location, and water access.
Diversify crops and integrate precision farming.
Mitigate risks with professional management.
In Conclusion
Investing in farmland provides a unique opportunity to secure a tangible, income-generating asset that has the potential for long-term appreciation. Whether through direct ownership, REITs, or investment platforms, there are various ways to gain exposure to farmland, depending on an investor’s preferences and resources. By evaluating factors like soil quality, location, water access, and market trends, investors can make informed decisions that maximize returns and reduce risks.
However, like any investment, farmland comes with its own set of challenges. Weather conditions, commodity price fluctuations, and land value risks all need to be considered. By using strategies like diversification, sustainable farming practices, and professional management, investors can unlock the full potential of their farmland investments. With the right knowledge and approach, farmland can be a valuable addition to any investment portfolio.
