We're four days into the most significant natural disaster in the recorded history of our region. Our community is experiencing an ongoing crisis created by infrastructural collapse and the profound failure of capitalism to value and sustain life. No state or federal aid has yet reached Asheville, but all around us we're seeing regular people acting autonomously to address immediate needs and meet one another with care. We hope to write soon about the beautiful and resourceful things we've witnessed.

Our co-op is physically intact and our members are accounted for. Although we've fared better than many, we're experiencing this crisis physically and emotionally. We're exhausted, largely without power, water, or internet. Cell service is poor, and when we are able to connect, the volume of information is overwhelming. Right now our priority is supporting and facilitating mutual aid efforts and we ask for your patience as we cannot keep up with emails, texts, and DMs.

Firestorm will continue to act as an in-person resource and information hub over the coming days, with staffing from noon to 4pm. A daily meeting at 2pm serves as a space for neighbors to get verified updates and coordinate mutual aid efforts. Other hubs have arisen organically in other parts of town and we're doing our best to share and connect resources.

Been wanting to get my hands on this book for a minute! I work on a college campus doing interpersonal violence prevention and education and I geek out in this type of stuff. Thanks to my friend Gabby the first book store I went to in London was The Second Shelf. It is awesome. If you are anywhere near there go! 

The Second Shelf bookstore opened in November 2018 to offer customers rare and antiquarian books, modern first editions, ephemera, manuscripts, and rediscovered works by women.

More about the bookshop:

Our shop carries over 3,000 titles ranging from affordable first edition collectible Penguin paperbacks and Virago green spines to Jane Austen's best friends personal copy of Sense & Sensibility. From collectible and signed editions of literary classics and modern first editions to experimental and avant-garde poetry. There are works on suffrage, feminism, history, science, philosophy, cookery, and children’s books. We also carry rare books, historical ephemera, and objects relating the work and lives of women, as well as unpublished manuscripts.

We specialize in providing this scarce material to collectors, to libraries, and to institutions.

We delight in making book recommendations, helping start or add to an existing collection, or selecting the perfect special edition for a birthday present or gift, whatever our customer’s budget.

I had no idea who Angela Carter was being stopping in here. She is worth knowing about. 

Before going to the book store I took myself out for a vegan personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut. They have a whole vegan menu! They use Violife cheese which I love. The pizza overall was totally fine, not amazing nor terrible. But I do appreciate that they have a vegan menu and find sitting in fast food places an interesting way to orient to new communities when I first arrive. I tried their Jack n’ Roll appetizer ‘Filled with BBQ Jackfruit & Violife Cheese’. For my pizza I had the Vegan Margarita. Apparently they now offer stuffed crust with the Violife cheese which I’m curious to try.

Well, someone did a crime. 🤔 This morning our co-operative was robbed. Someone smashed in the front door, emptied the register, and left behind a live bird (also totally possible that the bird came in separately). Hopefully they also took a good book, because they definitely didn't leave with a lot of money. Y'all, the anarchist bookstore is not sitting on piles of cash. 🙄 Crime elsewhere!

This is not a great time to take a financial hit, but we're OK. We got a lot of text messages from folks who saw the mess and were concerned <3. If anyone wants to help us cover the losses (looks like about $150 in cash plus $450 in physical damage) now would be a cool time to buy a book or five.

Also, no, we didn't call the police. There really isn't anything that law enforcement could do for us that we can't do for ourselves and if someone is desperate enough to risk their freedom for $150, maybe we've all failed them. It's tough feeling vulnerable, and seeing our storefront broken open brought up a lot of emotions, including anger—but incarceration isn't justice and punishment can only multiply harm.
