Watching Bucchigiri?! and seeing all the genuinely well implemented references to Arabic art folklore: 🥰🥰😍😘💙❤️🩷
Watching American YouTubers react to it all calling it "Indian" and not even doing that respectfully: 💀💀💀💀💀
#bucchigiri#seriously even if the plot doesn't seem too interesting rn i just LOVE the style#the main character s name is a hidden “Aladdin”#there is actually well written arabic#they even somehow correctly accounted for the difference in writing between modern and medieval#but i see YouTubers reaction saying it's set in some kind of Indian-china fusion#just because the main character lives with his mom in a Chinese restaurant#or another saying “oh yea it's from u know-*does the cliche hand above head Bollywood dance move*”#also the ending has the female character in actually accurate arab clothes that are nit just a sexualised belly dancer outfit#even though i don't like her character#but god dammit this was done with love for arab culture

Dick Grayson x South Asian!Reader HCs
requested | reader is fem; like with Jason's hc post, I tried to keep it non-specific to any country, hope i achieved that😬
also it's barely mentioned but as a special treat: reader is trained in Indian classical dance😏😏😏
batboys x south asian!reader masterlist
He loves watching Bollywood movies, but gets especially into the music…like really into it
This man becomes OBSESSED with Shreya Goshal; you come early one night to find him singing along to both parts of the duet Manwa Laage from Happy New Year while doing the dishes (which, if you don't know, is a very high-pitched song). He's so off-key but so into it you don't have the heart to tell him that your neighbors texted you to ask if a feral cat got loose in your apartment💀
Then it escalates— he tries to learn Hrithik Roshan’s dance from Dhoom Again (which has nothing to do with the fact that you told him Hrithik Roshan was your childhood crush)
(if ur not desi, it starts at timestamp 0:38 I highly recommend watching it for full context it's incredible— if you are then I know you already know what i'm talking about LMAOO)
And since you're a dancer you learn it with him but he’s genuinely upset that it’s so easy for you but so hard for him
"I should be getting this! Do you know how bendy my body is?!"
For some reason I feel like he would love the strong female lead-type movies (probably because he’s so eldest daughter coded) so movies like Queen, Dangal, Chak De India, that’s his jam, but he loves Kal Ho Naa Ho when he needs a good cry
If you’ve ever seen those tiktoks of families who dress up their dogs and cats in traditional wear…you’re doing that with Haley 100%
I think Dick is familiar with hair oiling because of his Romani background, but doesn’t start doing it until you guys are dating because you do it regularly so he just starts joining you
OR he does do it, but…badly. with one of those over-priced chemical-filled Sephora brands, and he doesn’t even apply it correctly. The first time you see him do it you’re legitimately offended. You spend the entire afternoon teaching him the right way, first taking him to the Indian market (they’re in new jersey so you know there’s plenty💀) and collecting all the ingredients and explaining the benefit of each one, then going back to his place and showing him how to properly toast the herbs and spices and then warm the oil with them, how to massage it all throughout his scalp and find all the pressure points.
He’s sooo attentive and genuinely interested, plus he just loves how passionate you are about this
He loves pani puri (obviously, he’s dick and they’re balls WHO SAID THAT)
But seriously, you make them and he’s just throwing them back non stop
He calls you rani (queen), meri jaan (my love), pyaari (cutie I think)
Dick learns how to drape your sari for you— he knows where all the pins go, where to make the folds and where to tuck in the fabric. He loves how happy it makes you and how you twirl in the mirror when he’s done. Once your relationship gets more serious, he loves to buy you new ones until you have all different styles for every occasion
He loves when you wear payals. You wear them once for an event, and he encourages you to wear them around the house because the sound they make when you walk is just so pretty
Another reason why he LOVES watching you dance. The ghungroos you wear make it all the more mesmerizing
Given how flexible he is from his acrobat training, he’s great at yoga. Much better than you, and you often require his help to get the positions right. He doesn’t mind, though, as long as it means he gets to have his hands on you as he guides your body into the correct stance
Of course he’s learning your language so he can communicate with your relatives. That doesn’t mean it’s easy, though
Most teaching sessions end with tears and/or yelling
“WHY ARE THERE SO MANY POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS??? WHY IS THERE ONLY ONE SPECIFIC SCENARIO FOR EACH ONE????”
“I DON’T KNOW DICK THERE JUST ARE”
In the least foot fetish-y way possible, he thinks the tradition of wearing toe rings is so attractive. When you tell him that only married women wear them, he considers proposing just for that reason (I mean he already has the ring, so what’s he waiting for?)
Speaking of marriage (😏), he’s so excited for you to get his name hidden somewhere in your mehendi/henna. When you’re getting it done, he keeps trying to peek into the room to see if he can spot it until the artist gets fed up and locks him out😭
On your wedding night the first thing he does when you get a moment alone is start searching for it
You told him about the tradition of stealing the groom's shoes beforehand. You did not, however, tell him about the bargaining portion of the tradition
So when he and his siblings are "looking" for them (come on now, they're world class detectives, but they don't want to ruin the fun) and ultimately "give up" like "okay! you got me! where are they!" and your family starts talking about a 5-figure ransom to see them again...
He's going insane trying to tell them that his father is the billionaire, not him, but your relatives could not care less. And the whole time he knows exactly where they are but he doesn't want to be that person and make all your relatives hate him😭
He manages to coax them down to 4-figures
He wanted 3, but after your youngest cousin read him to filth ("Oh the trust fund nepo-baby can't spare some change? Is this the kind of husband you are? Is this how you plan to support your wife?"), he had no choice
You KNOW he’s doing a dance number at the reception. Bonus points if it's the Dhoom Again dance
And of course he wants you two to do a number together. When he tells you as much, he thinks it'll be fun and silly and a way to spend time together— he's wrong.
Like a true Indian classical dance teacher, you are a DRILL SERGEANT. He gets transported back to his old Robin-training days, except Bruce is 8 inches shorter and wears 5 pounds of bells around his ankles. It's worth it for the end result, though.
You obviously eat him UP but he does a very good job
Which number? I'm SO glad you asked........
It's Kala Chashma
ok this really got away from me but i loved writing it. as for kala chashma i just thought it was funny😭but if you have any other songs you think would fit i would LOVE to hear

kamariya - kenyu yukimiya
paring: yukimiya x fem!reader
au: indian/bollywood + actors
cw: not proofread, intended lowercase, reader is a dancer like in that one scene in stree, yukimiya is the male lead for the "movie", yukimiya is mentioned by his first name, lyrics from the song are in Orange and italics, just yukimiya being a simp tbh
a/n: yukimiya brainrot. my indian girlies unite frfr!!! character choice based off of this moodboard a person made and. i. i had a vision. on holiday so i skipped out studying to write this (i'm cooked). Not really my best work but I wanted to post this bc I am happy to write it! hope you enjoy!! Woah fishii double posts writing 🙀
word count: 1576
best paired with: kamariya from stree <3
“practice run,” the director calls out, gesturing for all main actors and supporting cast to join him beside the camera station. the main leads, the main couple, are no where to be found. well, it’s not a big deal, since it’s just a scene with a song and dancing.
you’re a side character, a dancer, but the main dancer of the group. of course, the female lead gets introduced at this point in the film, but all eyes are on you for a good part of this scene. on you, your body, your movements and face. so naturally, you’re nervous, to say the very least.
“hmm, seems that Kenyu isn’t here yet. well, then, [name]. you can practice once more, if you’d like. might be a good idea to practice in front of a small audience, since you seemed shy when i last checked.” the director points towards a campfire setup, where the following scenes were meant to be recorded. you nod, following the others to the area where they each took their seats.
lucky for you, the other actors, both side and supporting roles, are kind. they hype you up, telling you to take your time as you both emotionally and physically prepare to dance. its not like you can just start moving your hips to the beat of the music. besides, it hasn’t even started playing yet.
you turn so that your back is to the small audience, as they sit in a semi-circle formation. you flex your hands a couple of times, hopping up and down to get yourself ready. one breath in. one breath out.
it really is as easy as just moving your hips. what’s the worst that can happen? losing confidence isn’t an issue, you’ve got a little hype squad.
one last breath in, the tip of your toes just barely touch the floor. you’re barefoot, to maintain your balance. you push yourself up from the floor, one foot a bit higher than the other to get into the “flow”.
you want to dance, you really do. but its too quiet. too awkward. eyes are to focused on you. you’re the main attraction, yeah, but… something has to lure the audience’s eyes in. in a seductive way? not too sure about that. maybe, that wouldn’t be so bad, would it?
lost in thought, the start of the song being sung by one of your back up dancers snaps you out of your trance.
“o seeli peeli pa ke o balam, tod de bharam. chhod de ghabrana.”
there you go. slowly but surely, you feel your shoulders loosen and your stress melt away. or maybe you’re just too focused to notice the others started clapping along and singing the parts they know.
unconsciously, you hum the tune to the song as your arms comfortably stretch above your head, slowly slithering down your torso as your hips take turns gently jerking up on either side. while it started off a little bit still, your movements became elegant just as fast as they became comfortable and natural for you to perform. the blouse you were wearing was somewhat revealing, but it makes sense for a scene like this.
“hmmm~”
your skirt, the longer piece of your lightweight lehenga, flows freely at your ankles. its red colour contrasts the soft blue lights that bounce off of the sequences on your outfit, off of the others’ faces and gracing your gorgeous face with a blue tint.
“dil ke saare button khol de, khul ke bol de,”
you expect your voice to come out a little bit squeaky, but to your surprise, it comes out just as intended. you spin around, slightly lifting the skirt of your lehenga as you move forward. you let the light fabric drop back to your ankles, turning the audience’s attention back to you. your wrists flick in various positions, with your shoulders flexing at different angles.
“bata de tera aaj hai plan kya?”
just as you’re about to invite your back up dancers to practice with you, the actual song plays. it’s a bit annoying, but what better opportunity to practice timing? you move your hips to the beat of the song, the words almost wrapping around your wrists and guiding them to smoothen your movements, from your back to the very tips of your fingers.
“aaj bijli bhi girwani hai, fire bhi lagwaani hai-”
your breath is comfortably held in your throat for a moment, trying to correctly perform a certain move when you hear an exhale behind you.
“jo tu aa ke baby hamre saath ma…”
you brush it off, exhaling as your arms slither down your torso once more. wait. exhale? behind you?
“aa, aa, aa, aa ke…”
you can’t turn around. it’s obviously someone from the audience, but you can’t help feeling a bit nervous as someone is quite literally over your shoulder. well, whatever, you can do this.
“kamariya…”
you finally turn around, expecting to be met with one of your back up dancers. but…
but?
“hila de hilla de, hila de hilla de-”
you pause, half on your tippy-toes and leaning backwards a bit.
“hila de hilla de,”
the person now in front of you leans in, just barely whispering.
“najariya…”
and god you can’t deny that there’s a good reason he’s been casted for the male lead. you can feel his breath lightly fanning over your neck, the tip of his nose just a slip up away from touching you.
your eyes flicker to the director, and he quietly points to the camera. its on. you either have to start dancing as naturally as possible again, or retake the whole scene. with the main lead watching. you take your chance, pulling yourself to stand up straight by tugging the man’s tie. your loop it around your hand once, a somewhat playful yet hesitant smirk on your lips.
“mila de milla de, mila de milla de-”
and he seems to have gotten the gist of how you want things to go. the other actors keep singing, some whistling and others clapping to the beat of the song to set the scene that you’re tonight’s main attraction.
“mila de milla de,”
he pulls you in by the waist, one hand intertwined with yours above your head, spinning you around. in an almost comical manner, one hand rests on your lower back as he leans you down.
“kamariya…”
so this is Kenyu Yukimiya. the Kenyu Yukimiya.
this is the closest you’ve been to the male lead. and oh boy, do you wish you were the female lead for such a movie. well, this is your moment. the “audience” whistles again, while Kenyu’s supporting actor, someone who is meant to be his best friend in the cast, drags him to sit back down.
your back up dancers spread out a bit more, and the camera stops. for a moment, anyways. the director calls out for everyone to stay in their positions, as the camera crew quickly moves the camera to be directed on you. well, here goes nothing. the scene right before the female lead will be introduced, you’ve got to make your mark and show the world you talent. the camera turns back on, and the “audience” starts singing again. they start of quiet, slowly growing louder as you regain your confidence.
“hila de hilla de,”
one flick of your wrist above your head,
“hila de hilla de,”
and a slither of your arm down your waist from your other arm.
“hila de hilla de-”
and you know his eyes are on you. they follow each of your movements, almost sparkling as bright as the blue lights reflecting off of the sequences on your lehenga. but why?
“najariya…”
you hear him just barely say under his breath, over the loud music and even louder singing.
“mila de milla de,”
what’s so fascinating about your dancing that he forgets his very queue for the next scene where the female lead is introduced? hah, loser.
“mila de milla de,”
you can’t deny that you slightly slow down your movements, just to watch the way his eyes follow your hips. the way they slowly meet your eyes, a crooked smile on his gorgeous face as he fights the urge to join you to dance once more. one chance, one chance he wants with you!
“mila de milla de,”
well, fuck it. off script? barely even following the plot of this movie, at this point. he stands back up, taking your hand and spinning you around. you’re a bit surprised, you didn’t actually expect him to give into his urges and dance with you. but hey, you’re not complaining.
“ho.. haye re mera dil le le!”
he sings between his laughs, leaning in close enough for you to be able to push his glasses up the bridge of his nose with your free hand. you’re tempted to do that, just to get him flustered. you would’ve done something to get him embarrassed if the director didn’t yell out “cut!” right when the sparks were erupting between you two.
“take five minutes, then from the top!” the director calls out, letting you leave to freshen up. but Kenyu stays in place, he’s still smitten by the way you move.
“najariya…” you hear him mutter under his breath, not in a musical manner. out of genuine desire for you to stay.
maybe another time, since you’re sure his eyes are on you.

Dances of India
Dance is an ancient and celebrated cultural tradition in India. Folk dances abound all across the country, and huge crowds of people can be found dancing at festivals and weddings. Dance and song features heavily in Indian cinema (so-called “Bollywood” films), too. But where does Indian dance draw its roots from? Here are six of the most important classical dance forms of India.
Classical Dances of India
Odissi
Dancer performing Indian classical odissi dance.
Odissi is indigenous to Orissa in eastern India. It is predominantly a dance for women, with postures that replicate those found in temple sculptures. Based on archaeological findings, odissi is belived to be the oldest of the surviving Indian classical dances. Odissi is a very complex and expressive dance, with over fifty mudras (symbolic hand gestures) commonly used.
Kuchipudi
Kuchipudi performance.
Unlike the other styles mentioned, kuchipudi requires talent in both dancing and singing. This dance, from the state of Andhra Pradesh in southeastern India, is highly ritualized, with a formalized song-and-dance introduction, sprinkling of holy water, and burning of incense, along with invocations of goddesses. Traditionally the dance was performed by men, even the female roles, although now it is predominantly performed by women.
Manipuri
Manipuri-style performance of Indian classical dance.
Manipuri comes from Manipur in northeastern India. It has its roots in that state’s folk traditions and rituals, and often depicts scenes from the life of the god Krishna. Unlike some of the other, more rhythmic dances, Manipuri is characterized by smooth and graceful movements. Female roles are especially fluid in the arms and hands, while male roles tend to have more forceful movements. The dance may be accompanied by narrative chanting and choral singing.
Kathak
Kathak school dancer, in Mughal costume, performing Indian classical dance.
A dance of northern India, Kathak is often a dance of love. It is performed by both men and women. The movements include intricate footwork accented by bells worn around the ankles and stylized gestures adapted from normal body language. It was originated by Kathakas, professional storytellers who used a mixture of dance, song, and drama. Like other Indian dances it began as a temple dance, but soon moved into the courts of ruling houses.
Kathakali
Kathakali dance
Kathakali comes from southwestern India, around the state of Kerala. Like bharatanatyam, kathakali is a religious dance. It draws inspiration from the Ramayana and stories from Shaiva traditions. Kathakali is traditionally performed by boys and men, even for female roles. The costumes and makeup are especially elaborate, with faces made to look like painted masks and enormous headdresses.
Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam performance
Bharatanatyam is a dance of Tamil Nadu in southern India. It traces its origins back to the Natyashastra, an ancient treatise on theatre written by the mythic priest Bharata. Originally a temple dance for women, bharatanatyam often is used to express Hindu religious stories and devotions. It was not commonly seen on the public stage until the 20th century. The dance movements are characterized by bent legs, while feet keep rhythm. Hands may be used in a series of mudras, or symbolic hand gestures, to tell a story.

as a dancer yourself, how do you think the stigma against male dancers which makes them labelled "gay" and female dancers which makes them labelled "prostitutes", can be dispersed?
This is something which even I think of and to be honest I do not have a good definite answer.
But, firstly, people need to be educated on the cultural history. History books mention about wars, dynasties and politics. There are very vague and meagre mentions of india's cultural history especially of the performing arts.
When I see the young masses talking about hindu culture and worship, the same barely know how many classical dance forms are there in India.
Exposure of the general audience to indian music and dance shows will actually help. I believe that the new gen dancers and some veteran dancers too have actually begun conversations about the history of dance, especially about female performers and their role in shaping the performing arts of india. Those need to be popularized especially through social media, because our generation uses a lot of it, so why not support viewership of the classical dance forms? That way even male classical dancers can be seen by non dancer males.
We have watched DID and other dance reality shows. Not everybody has enrolled in a dance class (neither western nor indian) but somehow we still accept western dance forms easily especially by males but sadly there isn't enough recognition for male classical artists. People talk about bharatiya sanskriti and sabhyata, will talk (and romanticize) wearing outfits from the vedic period, but will swiftly call the male dancer slurs even though he is portraying shiva and parvati.
When dance and music forms an integral part of indian culture, it is disappointing to see the general indian society be alienated from it. They are aware of it only through Bollywood which now does a shit job at portraying indian dance forms (folk dance is rarely seen. Folk is well another topic)
A good starting point would be to first read about it or watch classical dance shows and productions. Many of them are available on YouTube for free.
No one's asking to start learning dance and music, but if you can appreciate contestants on other dance reality shows with no knowledge of hip-hop, contemporary dance etc , then certainly you can also begin with indian dances.
I also need to add that good changes are happening. They are slow, but I am seeing appreciation for male dancers too. The stigma exists but the essential conversation about gender roles and art is taking place. It will take time, but it is happening.
As for female dancers well.... I do wonder when will the sexualization of the dancing body stop. Sensuality has been celebrated in India from a very long time, and there is a thin line between sensuality and vulgarity. Sadly, we as a society see sensuality as something impure.
A woman who is free and in control of her sexuality and sensuality must be tamed, turned demure and controlled. That is the general view. She is attractive, desirable but then when won/conquered/possessed must be tamed. The dancer too I think is seen as the same.
Stigma and stereotypes never completely break. But like I said previously, dialogue and debate is needed. Conversations need to happen. Female dancers too need to speak up and be vocal about it, about our history of women performers, because all of this exists due to them.
This was a long answer and I don't really have a definite solution(s) but I hope I could provide a few insights.
Also thanks for the question, I was writing in my journal about my dancing experience and the male gaze, I kinda vented it a little here too.
#samridhi speaks#desiblr#dance#this actually makes want to start a dance blog to talk about the history and also provide resources and dance music shows that are available#on yt??#that way the general audience. not in touch with it can start understanding??

The Jewish Bollywood Star: Esther Abraham
She was India's first female film producer
Esther Abraham was a Jewish Bollywood superstar and the first female film producer in India. She was a proud observant Jew even while shaping modern Indian culture.
Esther was born in Calcutta in 1916 to an Orthodox Jewish family. The Abrahams were Baghdadi Jews who had emigrated from Iraq in the 19th century. In school Esther excelled academically and athletically. She was a talented hockey player with a roomful of trophies. Esther was also an artist who attended Cambridge University after high school and majored in art.
After university, Esther became a kindergarten teacher at a Jewish school in Calcutta, but she yearned to be a performer. Her first job in the entertainment industry was as a dancer for a silent movie theater. Esther’s job was to entertain the audience during a pause in the film while the reel were changed.
Many members of Esther’s family were talented musicians and performers. She went to visit an actress cousin in Bombay who was appearing in a theater production. The director noticed tall, beautiful Esther and gave her a screen test.
Esther did so well on the test that she soon appeared in her first movie, Bhikaran, in 1936. Around this time she was given the screen name Pramila. Audiences fell in love with Pramila and she quickly became one of the most famous actresses in India. She also worked as a model and appeared on many magazine covers. In 1947, at age 31, Esther won the first Miss India contest – while pregnant with her fifth child.
At that time in India, the movie industry was controlled by a handful of extremely wealthy producers who exploited their actors and crew members and paid them only a measly salary. Esther Abraham decided to change that. She defied the studio system by becoming the first female producer of Bollywood feature films. Esther formed her own production company, Silver Productions, and produced sixteen feature films. She treated her cast and crew with respect and paid them well.
Esther starred in 30 films. In addition to being an actress and producer, she did her own stunts and worked as a stunt double for other performers. Esther also designed her own costumes and jewelry for every production.
Famous for her enchantingly beautiful eyes, audiences didn’t know that her eyesight was very poor and she did dance moves by counting the steps. Audiences also were likely unaware that she was Jewish – and probably wouldn’t have cared. Unlike so many countries with Jewish communities, India has no history of antisemitism.
Esther’s daughter Naqi Jahan was crowned Miss India in 1967, and they are the only mother and daughter who both won the title. Her son Haidar Ali is a successful Indian actor and screenwriter. Haidar described his mother: “A woman who was gifted by God with internal power and strength… she magnetized power…. One the home front she kept us together [clenching his fist] like this.”
Esther Abraham appeared in her last film in 2005, at age 90, playing a grandmother in the movie Thaang. She died a few months after its release. Until the end of her long life, Esther remained a practicing Jew. Her funeral was at the Maghen David synagogue, and her son Maurice read Psalms in Hebrew. Esther was buried in the Jewish cemetery in Mumbai.
For entertaining audiences for seventy years, and for being the first female film producer in India, we honor Esther Abraham, aka Pramila, as this week’s Thursday Hero.

Teri Meri Kahaniyaan: Ek Sau Teeswan (Review)
Ek Sau Teeswan is the last story in the 3 film anthology Teri Meri Kahaniyaan.
youtube
Let me be honest upfront, if not for this film being Wahaj Ali’s debut film, I would not have headed to the theatres in the first week of its release to watch it on the big screen. Before I dive into the details of the third story, a quick word on the first two stories in this anthology.
The first film Jin Mahal is a horror comedy with an underlying commentary on class and social strata that exists within all countries. The entire homeless family from the grandmom, to the parents and kids are wonderful to watch! They play their parts so well, especially Gul E Rana who plays the blind grandmom is an utter riot. Much much fun.
Skip the second story Pasoori (I couldn’t cause I watched it in the theatre) - it’s such a bad copy of a Bollywood film. The leads are not only terrible dancers, but they are also bad actors. I have seen both in different PTV dramas and was disappointed how bad Ramsha was here. I had no expectations from Shereyar (Osama of Zindagi Gulzar Hai) and I have no clue how he is getting any main lead roles. Can’t emote to save his life. Where is the fast forward button when you need it!
Now the winner of this film - the third story Ek Sau Teeswan (123rd). I’m not wrong to say that it is the biggest reason for the success of this film. Mehwish Hayat as Sadaf and Wahaj Ali as Asad star in this short tale of strangers on a train.
Two people meet on a train journey - a game of flirtations ensues , and co-passengers on the train join the audience to play the ‘will they , won’t they’ game.
The movie is Sadaf’s story, of her loyalty to her marriage despite the betrayal from her husband. Asad is clearly smitten by Sadaf’s beauty and makes no qualms about it. But he is carrying his own baggage of his marriage falling apart. In the next 30 mins through their conversations, we learn everything we have to about Sadaf and nothing about Asad. This is where the biggest flaw of the story is - it could have been more balanced giving us the male and female perspective on marriage.
But like I said, this story is about Sadaf, about a woman’s perspective. No woman today is going to like the narrative that Sadaf is working with when it comes to her marriage. I definitely didn’t, because adultery is an absolute deal breaker for me. It’s no go, cannot be forgiven. There is even a hint of abuse at the hands of the husband and that’s worse. So I couldn’t root for Sadaf for the choices she makes or sympathise with her. Mehwish though, reminded me so much of Chitragandha Singh and she is really delightful to watch. I get the writer was probably trying to say loyalty trumps love for women, but the way it was shown from Sadaf’s story was not palatable.
Now let’s go to the main reason I went for the movie - to watch Wahaj essay Asad for a total screen time of less than 30mins of this 40mins film. Like I said earlier we get to know very little about Asad. Asad tries to initiate the conversation but the rest of the journey is only about him reacting to Sadaf’s views and opinions. Through her story it is implied that he reassess his marriage and his feelings. I would love to dissect that last line he delivers and his expressions, but that would be a major spoiler for those who haven’t watched the movie.
Wahaj as Asad is charming as hell the moment he enters the screen, he is made for the big screen because you can’t take your eyes off him. Minimal dialogues , maximum expressions. How powerful are his eyes, mesmerising and captivating. They are speaking all the time - the infatuation, the realisation, the disappointment, the love, the apology. Wahaj needs no words, no dialogues. It’s like the writer and director narrated the character to him - said you don’t have many dialogues, now show me what you can do! Wahaj aced the assignment.
I need to see Wahaj in a full fledged slow burn, angsty , healthy romance. I have said so many times, he is born to romance on screen. He is not perfect as an all round actor, but he has perfected the romance genre, the look of love, the heart melting confessions, even if it’s only one line in this entire film. He woos you, he charms you, the moment he looks at you. I wish Pakistani drama and film industry does justice to his talents - he needs more powerful scripts and strong characters to show the world what he is truly capable of.
Mehwish Hayat is an accomplished name in the industry, while Wahaj is making his debut in this film - but he matches her effortlessly in terms of acting and screen presence! It’s not my favourite pairing of his, but he can create chemistry with anyone!
In summary, Ek Sau Teeswan is Sadaf’s story, any other actor playing Asad could have been a side character; but Wahaj as Asad tiptoes gently in the story and ends up stealing the limelight with that last line delivery and look! A star in the making - choose the right scripts Wahaj and we are seated to watch you soar!
Verdict : Teri Meri Kahaniyaan is not a blow your mind, must watch film. It’s good in parts and has many flaws. If you are a Wahaj Ali fan like me , definitely go watch him on the big screen if the film is running in a theatre near you. If not, wait for it to release on OTT and do watch him essay the gentle, soft spoken, charming Asad. Until you wait, listen to this wonderful track in Shuja Haider’s voice - a song about unsaid, unspoken, unexpressed, unrequited love.
