and the results are in!
a not insignificant minority of sports fans/bloggers that this reached DO do the sport they watch most often -- ice hockey was the largest 'yes' represented in the notes by a long way (but that is likely to be down to which circles this reached/proportion of hockey fans on tumblr), but just off the top of my head there were 'yes' tags from baseball, basketball, football, american football, swimming, cycling, cricket, and tennis!
as hypothesised, motorsports represented most of the 'no' notes (as an especially inaccessible/high-cost sport). f1 fans without driving licenses you are seen and acknowledged <3 however this f1 fan in particular is seen and acknowledged and slowly backed away from
thank you everyone who voted, tagged, and reblogged. my curiosity is partially sated!
okay now i'm curious:
reblog to reach more corners of sportsblr and do tag which sport your response is based on <3
by play/take part i don't necessarily mean at any competitive level -- for example i mostly blog about pro cycling, am part of a local cycling club and enjoy riding for both leisure and exercise so i voted yes even though i don't race yet
#also since this poll ran i've started attending beginner ice hockey sessions and am racing for the first time lmao#further questions though:#how did you get into playing the sport?#before/after getting into watching it?#any athletes in the family?#and: if in a hypothetical world you had the opportunity to become a professional at the sport in question‚ would you?#<- my answer is uhhhhh. no. it seems like a hell of a difficult time but i feel like my answer might change if i was a man#mandated minimum wage for male pro cyclists extends far beyond the WT when a not insignificant portion female pros outside the WWT#don't report any regular salary/income 😬

Christmas Gifts for Runners: A Guide to the Perfect Present
The holiday season is just around the corner, and finding the perfect Christmas gift can be exciting and challenging if you have a runner in your life. Runners are a unique group, passionate about their sport, and often very particular about their gear. Whether they're seasoned marathoners, trail enthusiasts, or just starting on their running journey, a thoughtful gift that complements their lifestyle can be significant. Here's a comprehensive guide to Christmas gifts for runners across different formats.
1. Apparel and Footwear
a. Running Shoes:
A good pair of running shoes is one of the most essential items for any runner. However, choosing the right pair can be tricky since it depends on the runner's foot type, running style, and preferences. Consider a gift card to a specialty running store where they can get properly fitted, or if you know their favorite brand and model, surprise them with a new pair. Brands like Nike, Brooks, and ASICS offer a wide range of options catering to different needs.
b. Moisture-Wicking Clothing:
Running gear that keeps them dry and comfortable is always a hit. Look for moisture-wicking tops, shorts, or leggings that are lightweight and breathable. Brands like Under Armour, Lululemon, and Patagonia offer high-quality options that can make a runner's experience more enjoyable, especially in various weather conditions.
c. Compression Gear:
Compression socks, sleeves, or tights can be a great addition to a runner's wardrobe. They help improve circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, and aid in recovery after long runs. Companies like CEP and 2XU specialize in compression gear that combines functionality with style.
2. Tech Gadgets
a. GPS Running Watch:
A GPS running watch is a fantastic gift for both novice and experienced runners. It helps track distance, pace, heart rate, and other essential metrics. High-end options like the Garmin Forerunner series or the Apple Watch offer advanced features, including route mapping, training plans, and even music storage.
b. Wireless Earbuds:
Music can be a great motivator during a run, and wireless earbuds designed for sports are a thoughtful gift. Look for sweat-resistant models with a secure fit, such as the Jaybird Vista or the Beats Powerbeats Pro. They offer excellent sound quality and stay in place even during intense workouts.
c. Running Headlamp:
For runners who enjoy early morning or evening runs, a reliable headlamp is a must-have. It ensures safety by lighting up the path and making it visible to others. Brands like Petzl and Black Diamond offer headlamps with adjustable brightness levels, long battery life, and comfortable fit.
3. Hydration and Nutrition
a. Hydration Packs and Bottles:
Staying hydrated is crucial, especially during long runs. A hydration pack or handheld bottle is a practical gift that a runner will appreciate. CamelBak offers a variety of hydration packs with different capacities, while Nathan and Salomon provide lightweight, ergonomic handheld bottles that are easy to carry.
b. Energy Gels and Bars:
Runners often need a quick energy boost during their workouts. Gifting a variety pack of energy gels, chews, or bars can be a thoughtful and useful present. Brands like GU, Clif, and Honey Stinger offer products that are easy to digest and packed with essential nutrients.
c. Electrolyte Supplements:
Electrolyte supplements help runners replenish lost minerals and stay hydrated. Nuun and Skratch Labs offer effervescent tablets that can be added to water for a refreshing, electrolyte-rich drink. These are great stocking stuffers that a runner can easily take on the go.
4. Recovery and Wellness
a. Foam Roller:
A foam roller is an essential tool for post-run recovery, helping to relieve muscle tension and improve flexibility. Opt for high-density rollers like the ones from TriggerPoint or RumbleRoller, which offer deep tissue massage and come in various textures and sizes.
b. Massage Gun:
For runners who experience frequent muscle soreness, a massage gun can be a game-changer. It provides targeted deep-tissue massage to help with muscle recovery and pain relief. Popular options include the Theragun and Hypervolt, which offer adjustable speed settings and various attachments for different muscle groups.
c. Post-Run Body Care Bundle:
Post-run body care bundles from brands like 1Hour-After are perfect Christmas gifts for runners. These sets typically include muscle balm gels, refueling body lotions, cooling body washes, anti-chafing sticks, and high-quality strengthening shampoos and protein-rich conditioners. Designed to soothe soreness and promote relaxation, they help runners recover and stay refreshed for their next workout.
d. Epsom Salts and Bath Soaks:
A relaxing bath can do wonders for tired muscles. Epsom salts or specially formulated bath soaks with essential oils can be a thoughtful gift that promotes relaxation and recovery. Dr. Teal's offers a range of bath products designed to soothe sore muscles and revitalize the body.
5. Accessories
a. Running Belt or Armband:
A running belt or armband is perfect for carrying essentials like keys, phone, and ID during a run. Look for options that are lightweight, adjustable, and have secure pockets. SPIbelt and FlipBelt are popular brands that offer comfortable and functional designs.
b. Gloves and Headbands:
For runners who brave the cold, thermal gloves and headbands can make a big difference. Look for moisture-wicking, insulating materials that keep hands and ears warm without overheating. Brands like The North Face and Smartwool offer high-quality accessories that are perfect for winter runs.
c. Sunglasses:
A good pair of running sunglasses not only protects the eyes from UV rays but also enhances visibility by reducing glare. Oakley and Goodr offer lightweight, stylish sunglasses that stay in place during runs and come in various colors and lens options.
6. Books and Inspiration
a. Running Books:
Inspiration and knowledge are powerful motivators. Consider gifting a book on running that offers training tips, personal stories, or insights into the mental aspects of the sport. Titles like "Born to Run" by Christopher McDougall or "Let Your Mind Run" by Deena Kastor provide valuable lessons and motivation.
b. Subscription to Running Magazines:
A subscription to a running magazine like Runner's World or Trail Runner is a gift that keeps on giving. It provides regular updates on the latest gear, training tips, and inspiring stories from the running community.
c. Running Journal:
A running journal is a great way for runners to track their progress, set goals, and reflect on their training. Look for journals specifically designed for runners, with sections for recording distances, times, and notes on each run.
7. Experiences
a. Race Entry:
For many runners, participating in a race is a thrilling experience. Consider gifting a race entry to a local 5K, half-marathon, or even a marathon. It's a gift that offers not only the excitement of the race day but also the motivation to train and prepare in the weeks leading up to it.
b. Running Retreat or Camp:
A running retreat or camp can be a unique and memorable gift. These events offer runners the opportunity to train in beautiful locations, meet like-minded individuals, and learn from experienced coaches. Retreats like those offered by Active at Altitude or ZAP Endurance provide a blend of training, relaxation, and adventure.
c. Personalized Coaching:
For runners looking to improve their performance, personalized coaching can be a game-changing gift. Many coaches offer virtual sessions that include customized training plans, feedback, and support. Platforms like TrainingPeaks or Runcoach connect runners with experienced coaches who can help them reach their goals.
Conclusion
Choosing the perfect Christmas gift for a runner involves understanding their needs, preferences, and goals. Whether it's a piece of high-tech gear, an inspiring book, or a thoughtful accessory, the right gift can enhance their running experience and show them how much you support their passion. This holiday season, consider these options to find a present that will make the runner in your life excited to lace up their shoes and hit the road or trail.
