Felix Gonzalez-Torres was a Cuban visual artist who excelled most at minimalist art. He worked in New York from 1979 to 1995. One of his most known works is his candy piles. This art symbolized a person losing their fight to HIV/AIDS, for each pill they took was a pill that did nothing to save their lives. Felix, much like the characters in Angels understood the depth and fear of the AIDS crisis. Felix would pass away due to complications with AIDS in 1996.

This is Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s lesser-known 1988 painting work ‘Forbidden Colors.’  And here is part of the statement he released to accompany its first outing at the New Museum that same year: “It is a fact people are discriminated against for being HIV positive. It is a fact the majority of the Nazi industrialists retained their wealth after war. It is a fact the night belongs to Michelob and Coke is real. It is a fact the color of your skin matters. It is a fact Crazy Eddie’s prices are insane. It is a fact that four colors red, black, green and white placed next to each other in any form are strictly forbidden by the Israeli army in the occupied Palestinian territories. This color combination can cause an arrest, a beating, a curfew, a shooting, or a news photograph. Yet it is a fact that these forbidden colors, presented as a solitary act of consciousness here in SoHo, will not precipitate a similar reaction. From the first moment of encounter, the four colour canvases in this room will “speak” to everyone. Some will define them as an exercise in color theory, or some sort of abstraction. Some as four boring rectangular canvases hanging on the wall. Now that you’ve read this text, I hope for a different message.

"This piece of art is in the Smithsonian. They have removed the references to AIDS as Gonzalez-Torres’ inspiration and turned the dwindling pile representing the diminution and death of his lover into a candy trail.

This is unconscionable. However, it goes deeper than that.

In 2017, control of Gonzalez-Torres’ artistic estate passed to David Zwirner and Andrea Rosen Gallery. They began to immediately distance the artist’s legacy from AIDS and gayness, preferring instead to make him and the defining agony of his life about the complexity of art and its relationship to the viewer.

This is because art associated with white, straight artists is greatly preferred at the upper end of art acquisitions, where they want art whose price won’t be affected by, say, a sudden massive political swing against acceptance of queer artists by the wealthiest caste of human parasitoids, as happened last week.

So, Gonzalez-Torres’ art has grown only more powerful. Now it stands not only for his own grief, but for the exploitation, extortion, and distortion of artists by their wealthy curators, the way that capital defangs all art and crushes its meaning down to a simple and saleable product, a pokemon card for billionaires made of human tears and candy.

Sometimes there’s no way to satirize an industry that is more effective than simply describing what they eagerly choose to do.
