FedEx's delivery of delivery data could use some work
If you're going to deliver a package to my home, please try to deliver clear and useful information about how and when that delivery will happen.
Tuesday afternoon got less productive for me when I had to get in a 20-mile errand through some of Northern Virginia’s less enjoyable traffic. My reason for this drive to a light-industrial stretch of Eisenhower Avenue in Alexandria a few blocks from a trash-to-energy plant? A company that exists largely to deliver packages to people’s homes. FedEx handed off this logistical chore to me after a…

My copy of Tears of the Kingdom was supposed to be delivered on Sunday (already later than most people but that was my bad) but NOW it’s not saying Friday? Despite it currently being in the same city as me?? And FedEx has it which really doesn’t bode well???

If you were offered the same job, like hotel registration in general, but as far away from Florida as possible, would you take it?
If by "as far away" you mean "on Earth," then no, because I rather like living on land instead of at sea 1000 miles off the coast of Perth, Australia.
Tumblr media
Honest answer, maybe. I don't think I could ever work for a big chain, because I hate company culture so fucking much. I have a lot of freedom at the little Mom and Pop motel I work at now, and I'd have to give that up if I got a job at a Marriott or Holiday Inn. The job itself is easy, it's just the clientele I hate with a burnimg passion; check out my tag "all tourists are bastards" for the greatest hits.
My boss doesn't care what I do or say as long as I get the job done. No uniform, no fake smile, no manager breathing down my neck. She understands that the customer is often wrong, and doesn't take shit from anyone. If someone complains about something beyond our control, she takes my side and tells them to suck it up or leave.
The absolute greatest part about my current job is that I'm not expected to do anything between customers. Sure, every now and then my boss will give me chores, but that only happens as they're needed
If FedEx drops off a package for a customer, I walk it to their room
If a customer smears their sweaty hands all over the office door, I clean it
If the brochure display runs low, I fill it
But that's all just part of the job. My boss never just finds shit for me to do to fill time. If there's nothing to do, I can go on my phone or read a book or draw, and she doesn't care. I have plenty of downtime, and it does wonders for my mental health. No other hotel on Earth would allow me such a privilege because most front desks are in a public communal area where I'd have to put on my Customer Service Face™ at all times, while the office door at my current job is locked 24/7 with a big neon PLEASE RING DOORBELL FOR SERVICE sign hung up at eye level. I don't have to stand all day, I only have to get up when they buzz so I can open the door for them from the inside. There's no stool at the desk, I stand for every customer, but once they leave I can go to the back room and sit in a recliner (though I'm not allowed to recline it; still comfy)
No Best Western manager would ever let me cuss out a customer who started shit. My boss lets me defend myself, and I appreciate that more than anything. Customers are liars, and she knows it. I love, love, LOVE when they start arguing with me and ask to speak with my manager, only for her to tell them exactly what I did, verbatim. Hell, it's gotten to the point that I offer to get her involved from the start, "oh, you don't like what I telling you? Do you want to speak with my boss, the owner?" We don't need their business, this place has been a community cornerstone for decades, no amount of entitled asshole reviews will ever tank it.
If I could find a nice Mom and Pop place somewhere up north, and if I could establish a mutually respectful relationship with the owner, I'd take the job in a heartbeat, but every time I google a state I want to move to I get met with dozens of horror stories telling me that it's not all it's cracked up to be. Everyone hates where they live, that's a given, but to someone living in Weimar Germany (almost Nazi), those places look like paradise in comparison. Oregon, Washington state, Vermont, Massachusetts, they seem like beacons of hope to lil ole naive me. Ideally I want to move to New Zealand, but that's beyond my budget (and probably always will be). Nowhere is safe from crazy, but some places are more tolerable.

Kink Advent Day Ten: The Mother Ship
Today's Kink Advent clue from @dommestic was "Whip," which meant to me "something to do with Indiana Jones or Pie." It was pie the tag for today was on a container of Cool Whip with (I believe) "orientation" as the clue. We went to the not-so-local dungeon for a class for the first time in about seven years for a thing with floggers and whips. We almost did some hardcore cuddling Sunday, but FedEx decided to go from "doesn't bother to knock" to banging on the door so loud you would assume it was a home invasion, so that ended that.
We did indeed make it out to the place for the orientation, much of which has been amazing fodder for conversation and consideration in the Dommestic House. (Dommecile?) I'm very rarely around groups of kinky people and kinky spaces, especially since the Beforetimes, outside of online conversation and one delightful person I visited while on business a couple of months back.
It's always fascinating to see how people present material to others, and how people teach. I saw and heard a lot I didn't expect, which resulted in some unwanted ringing in the ears. We saw some basic stuff, and advanced stuff that I would say is perhaps not to my tastes. But it's always fascinating to see what people learn and develop, be it refining something you saw in a Devo video once or coming up with a way to more or less instantly encase somebody in a block of styrofoam. It's vague, but such is required by the terms of service.
Lunch was good. Dinner was good. We have a lot to chew on now.

Find the Word (again, yay!)
Tagged by @pertinax--loculos, tysm!
Tagging: @calicojackofficial, @frostedlemonwriter, @joeys-piano (if you wanna do another one!), @novel-emma, + open tag.
My words: hand, yell, deal, wait and lose.
Your words: minute, dare, fresh, ahead, none.
Cheated mildly on a couple of these, lol (just tenses). All from Life in Black and White, Act I (previous version).
Hand
As I wait for Jeff to come back with his notion of “something stronger than beer,” whatever that may be, I make a promise to the moon, and to myself, that I won’t get drunk. Surely one drink isn’t going to cause a repeat of the Fourth. Maybe even two drinks. Yeah, maybe if I pace myself, I can make it two drinks.
He comes back with a fucking full quart of straight vodka. Smiles as he hands it to me. “This good?”
I want to say no, you fucking idiot - but then, I’m the one who requested something stronger, am I not? I look at the bottle and quickly decide that it’s all too tempting to pass up. “Yep. Thanks.”
Yell
I hear footsteps on the floor, and then the creak of a door...
“Jeff!” I yell, and with a strength I didn’t know I possessed, I push past Allie, wrench open the door and dart out into the hallway. I pass the staircase just as the man at the top of the stairs - Allie’s husband, I assume - starts descending, glancing at me with a mean look on his bulldog face.
Deal
But apparently, Daphne wants to talk about it, so I’m subjected to a convoluted rant about Kyle being a weak son of a bitch with a pathologically low level of patience. He ended up getting sick of her, and one day, told her to pack her things and get out of his apartment. One of her co-workers offered to board her for the same amount she’d been paying (Daphne now works at a large FedEx call center – “They’ll never fire me, because I’m the one they come get to deal with the really bitchy customers,” she proudly boasts).
Wait
“Oh, yeah, because you’re such a selfless angel. Don’t make me laugh.” He stepped right up to me, almost teasing me, a mocking smile on his face. Looked me dead in the eyes. “You really going to stand here and act like you’re not just sitting in my good graces, waiting around for the next time I decide to let you jump my bones? No, of course not. You’re fucking Mother Teresa. The only person who could possibly love me, right?”
Lose
The curtain opens and a tired-looking nurse walks in. “Hi, Gabriel. How are you feeling?” When I don’t respond, she turns to my dad, telling him gently, “I’ll call psych for you now that he’s awake. It’s a slow night, shouldn’t take them too –”
Before I know what’s hit me, I lose it. “I don’t need psych!” I yell at her.

My building is... difficult to find. The front door of the building is on the roof of the parking garage for the downtown entertainment complex. You have to drive up to the floor below and dial my apartment so I can open the gate. The official USPS address is 100 (name of pedestrian plaza through the complex at street level), which Google Maps doesn’t even think exists, and Waze only points to the entrance to the garage.
I haven’t had entire orders go missing, but I have had to get dressed and make my way down to street level because a delivery person (who often speaks little English) can’t understand my directions. I have also had this issue with Amazon and other delivery companies - UPS and FedEx have figured it out, fortunately. I have given up trying to order from restaurants that have not been here before. My go-to pizzeria changed ownership last fall; I no longer order delivery from them. I only order from them on work nights that I can stop and pick it up on my way home. I used to subscribe to HomeChef, but when their new delivery partner could not figure out the instructions to access the building and left my box next to the elevator *at street level* and it got stolen three weeks in a row, I canceled and switched to HelloFresh (who seem to have no problem getting it right). There is a sign *right above the elevator call button* that says you need to take the elevator to the floor below the roof and walk up the ramp. (You can’t make the elevator go to the roof level unless you’re a resident of the building with an RFID tag.)
This is my saga. (Transcript below images, behind the cut)

Transcript of a text message exchange between me and a few friends.
Me: My local Domino's sucked so bad last time they delivered to me that I stopped ordering from them like a year ago. Decided to get a pizza tonight and give them another chance…they no longer exist.
I then share a screengrab which states that my order was placed at 4:13pm today, but that Google's little preview window lists it as "Expected by January 9, 2024". This will be humorous later.
Me: Ordered from Little Caesars instead. They say my pizza will arrive sometime in the next four months. Also my delivery driver has been waiting to pick up my food for over 30 minutes. So they might not be wrong.
Friend K: Are you…cursed, Sam?
Me: Delivery driver bailed and was replaced with a new driver but when that happens the tracker doesn't understand what's going on, so now I'm watching my old delivery driver just drive off towards wrigleyville.
Friend K: NOOOOOO MY PIZZA
Me: As far as I know they still haven't made it. Nobody's picking up at the restaurant.
Friend C: You're gonna get a random pizza in four months.
Friend K: You'll be on your 734,845th driver by then.
Me: So the first driver was there for 30 minutes, got fed up, told the app the store was CLOSED, and left. Second driver heard the store was closed and didn't check, just left himself as the driver because he couldn't cancel an order at a closed restaurant. THIRD DRIVER has just arrived and confirmed the store is open but in the weeds. The pizza I ordered at 4:15 is arriving at 6pm, but I did get a refund because of the late delivery.
I then share a screengrab which shows the Doordash "tracker" map with a bold text header reading Your Order Was Cancelled. There is a large "top hat" emoji covering downtown Chicago so you all can't see my address in the app.
Me: …or this could happen.
Friend C: No pizza for u.
Me: I literally haven't ordered any food delivery in months because it just wasn't worth the hassle every time. This time I was like "maybe if I just chill it'll be fine." This is like the time I ordered Papa John's and they called me to break the tragic news that they were out of pepperoni.

Shipping from China: A Comprehensive Guide
Introduction
Tumblr media
This guide will break down everything you need to know about shipping from China, from the different methods available to the finer details like customs clearance, shipping costs, and tracking.
Types of Shipping Options
When shipping from China, you have several options to choose from, each with its own set of advantages and drawbacks. The method you choose will depend on your specific needs, budget, and timeline.
Sea Freight Shipping
Sea freight is the most common method for shipping large quantities of goods from China. It's typically the most cost-effective option for bulk shipments.
Air Freight Shipping
Air freight is much faster than sea freight but comes with a higher price tag. It's ideal for smaller, high-value goods that need to be delivered quickly. Air freight is commonly used for electronics, fashion items, and perishable goods.
Express Shipping
For even faster delivery, express shipping services like DHL, FedEx, and UPS offer door-to-door services. While express shipping is the most expensive option, it's perfect for urgent deliveries and smaller shipments.
Pros and Cons of Different Shipping Methods
Each shipping method has its pros and cons, which are crucial to consider before making a decision.
Sea Freight Pros and Cons
Pros: Cost-effective for large shipments, suitable for bulky and heavy items, wide availability.
Cons: Long transit times, complex customs clearance, potential delays.
Air Freight Pros and Cons
Pros: Fast delivery, reliable schedules, ideal for smaller, high-value items.
Cons: High costs, limited space, and weight restrictions.
Express Shipping Pros and Cons
Pros: Quickest delivery, door-to-door service, simplified customs procedures.
Cons: Very expensive, not suitable for large shipments.
Understanding Incoterms
What Are Incoterms?
Incoterms (International Commercial Terms) are a set of standardized trade terms published by the International Chamber of Commerce. They define the responsibilities of buyers and sellers in international transactions, including who is responsible for shipping, insurance, and customs duties.
Common Incoterms Used in Shipping from China
FOB (Free on Board): The seller is responsible for delivering goods to the port, and the buyer assumes responsibility from that point onwards.
CIF (Cost, Insurance, and Freight): The seller covers the cost of shipping and insurance to the buyer's port of destination.
EXW (Ex Works): The buyer takes on full responsibility from the seller's premises, including all transportation costs and customs clearance.
Choosing the Right Freight Forwarder
A freight forwarder can simplify the shipping process by handling logistics, documentation, and customs clearance on your behalf. Here's what to look for:
What to Look for in a Freight Forwarder
Experience: Look for a forwarder with experience shipping from China to your destination country.
Network: A wide network of partners and carriers can help ensure smoother logistics.
Customer Service: Reliable communication and support are crucial for a stress-free shipping experience.
Benefits of Using a Freight Forwarder
Tumblr media
Customs Clearance Process
Understanding the customs clearance process is vital to ensuring your goods aren't delayed at the border.
Overview of Customs Procedures
Customs clearance involves the submission of necessary documentation, inspection of goods, and payment of duties and taxes. Ensuring that all paperwork is correct and submitted on time is essential for a smooth process.
Documentation Required for Shipping from China
Bill of Lading (BOL): Proof of the shipment between the seller and buyer.
Commercial Invoice: A document detailing the value of the goods for customs.
Packing List: A detailed list of the contents of the shipment.
Customs Declaration: Forms required by the importing country to assess duties.
Shipping Costs and Fees
Shipping costs from China can vary widely based on several factors.
Factors Affecting Shipping Costs
Shipping Method: Sea freight, air freight, or express shipping each have different cost structures.
Weight and Volume: Larger and heavier shipments will cost more.
Destination: The further your goods need to travel, the higher the cost.
Hidden Fees to Watch Out For
Port Fees: Charges for using port facilities.
Customs Brokerage Fees: Fees for clearing your goods through customs.
Handling Fees: Charges for loading and unloading goods.
How to Avoid Shipping Delays
Shipping delays can be costly and frustrating. Here’s how to prevent them:
Common Causes of Delays
Customs Issues: Missing or incorrect documentation can cause delays.
Congestion at Ports: Busy ports can lead to longer wait times for shipments.
Weather Conditions: Severe weather can disrupt shipping schedules.
Tips for Ensuring Timely Delivery
Plan Ahead: Allow extra time for potential delays, especially during peak seasons.
Ensure Accurate Documentation: Double-check all paperwork to avoid customs issues.
Work with Reliable Partners: Choose reputable freight forwarders and carriers.
Packaging and Labeling for International Shipping
Proper packaging and labeling are critical for ensuring your goods arrive safely and comply with international regulations.
Importance of Proper Packaging
Good packaging protects your goods from damage during transit. Use sturdy materials, waterproof packaging, and proper cushioning to prevent breakage.
Labeling Requirements for Different Countries
Different countries have specific labeling requirements, including language, safety warnings, and handling instructions. Be sure to comply with these to avoid delays or fines.
Tracking Your Shipment
Tracking your shipment provides peace of mind and allows you to monitor its progress.
How to Track Shipments from China
Most carriers offer online tracking tools that provide real-time updates on your shipment's status. Simply enter your tracking number on the carrier's website to see where your goods are.
Tools and Platforms for Real-Time Tracking
Ship24: Provides tracking across multiple carriers.
17Track: A universal tracking platform that covers over 170 postal services.
Carrier-Specific Tools: DHL, FedEx, and UPS all offer real-time tracking on their websites.
Dealing with Damaged Goods
Sometimes, despite all precautions, goods can be damaged during shipping. Here's what to do:
What to Do If Your Shipment Is Damaged
Inspect Immediately: Check the goods as soon as they arrive. Document any damage with photos.
Report the Damage: Notify the carrier and your insurance provider immediately.
File a Claim: Submit a claim with the carrier, including all necessary documentation.
Import Duties and Taxes
Import duties and taxes vary depending on the destination country and the type of goods you're shipping.
Overview of Duties and Taxes for Different Countries
Each country has its own tariff schedule that determines the duties and taxes on imported goods. Some countries may also have trade agreements with China that reduce or eliminate certain tariffs.
How to Calculate and Pay Import Duties
You can calculate duties using online tools or by consulting with your freight forwarder. Duties are usually paid before the goods are released from customs.
Shipping Insurance
Shipping insurance protects you against potential losses during transit.
Types of Insurance Available
All-Risk Insurance: Covers most types of damage or loss.
Named Perils Insurance: Covers only specific risks outlined in the policy.
Why You Need Shipping Insurance
Without insurance, you could be liable for the full cost of lost or damaged goods. Shipping insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection.
Sustainable Shipping Practices
The environmental impact of shipping is significant, but there are ways to make it more sustainable.
Environmental Impact of Shipping
Shipping contributes to pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and habitat destruction. Sea freight, in particular, has a large carbon footprint due to the heavy fuel consumption of cargo ships.
How to Make Shipping from China More Sustainable
Choose Eco-Friendly Packaging: Use recyclable or biodegradable materials.
Consolidate Shipments: Reduce the number of shipments to minimize fuel consumption.
Offset Carbon Emissions: Some carriers offer carbon offset programs that allow you to invest in environmental projects to balance out your shipment’s carbon footprint.
Conclusion
Shipping from China is a vital part of global trade, and understanding the complexities involved can save time, money, and stress. From choosing the right shipping method to navigating customs clearance and tracking your goods, each step is essential to a successful shipment. By staying informed and working with reliable partners, you can ensure that your goods arrive safely and on time.

FedEx is my least favorite delivery service.
I sent this to a friend to explain what's going on so y'all get it to now. You're welcome.
Context: my computer is broken and needs a full upgrade.
[So I order parts from Best Buy for the computer and the location nearest me doesn't have all the parts. So I ordered for shipping cuz it's free. And on the order it says it might even be here by Thursday. On Friday at around noon there was a knock on the door but I was half asleep so I didn't answer it and I found a FedEx tag that said that they would try three more times on consecutive business days before holding it for a week for me to pick up from them up in the NE. I get an email from Best buy at 4 p.m. saying it was shipped.
Then nothing which is not unusual. I was expecting for something on Monday. Monday comes and goes nothing. I call yesterday being like "where package?" The person updates my delivery information to let them know I'm disabled and it'll take a bit to get to the door and tell me that they're coming with my package after the call. I wait outside for THREE HOURS and nothing.
I called today after class and the person's like "they've already tried to deliver it four times. It wasn't even going to arrive yesterday. It's at our warehouse ready for pickup." Meanwhile, the tracking app says it's returning to sender and it has been since before I called them yesterday. So I ask for a supervisor who tells me that they use different systems for tracking and the customer isn't seeing what they are seeing and it says that they tried to deliver it four times: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Monday. Told them I have been home and the only time I heard a knock was Friday. They tell me that they will give my package to a delivery person tomorrow because all of the deliveries are done for the day already???? And then text me so I know when it'll happen. But guess what? That'll be at 7 A.M.. So now I have to wake up at 7 in the morning and wait until my package arrives.]
Context: I go to bed at 3 a.m. on a good night. My Pokemon sleep app is already confused about my sleep and now FedEx is gonna fuck it up even more.
Lesson: Best Buy free shipping is a lie. You pay with sanity and hours of sleep.

Shipping Trinidad: Best Deals for Shipping Orders For You
Tumblr media
In today's interconnected world, international shipping has become an essential aspect of business and personal transactions. Whether you are a business owner looking to expand your market reach or an individual sending a gift to a loved one overseas, shipping to Trinidad presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore the best deals for international orders when it comes to shipping to Trinidad from the United States. We'll cover various shipping options, costs, and practical tips to ensure your parcels arrive safely and efficiently. Let's dive in and discover how to make your shipping experience to Trinidad a breeze.
Understanding Shipping to Trinidad
What Makes Trinidad Special?
Trinidad, known for its vibrant culture, rich history, and stunning landscapes, is the larger of the two islands comprising the nation of Trinidad and Tobago. Situated in the Caribbean, this beautiful island nation serves as a crucial hub for trade and tourism in the region. Due to its strategic location and economic significance, shipping to Trinidad has gained prominence in recent years. Businesses seeking to tap into the Caribbean market and individuals sending goods or gifts to friends and family often find themselves exploring the shipping options available.
Factors Influencing Shipping Costs
When it comes to international shipping, several factors impact the overall cost. For shipments to Trinidad, the following factors play a crucial role in determining the final price:
Distance: The distance between the origin and destination significantly affects shipping costs. Trinidad's location in the Caribbean means that shipping from the United States might involve longer transit times and potentially higher expenses.
Weight and Dimensions: Heavier and larger packages generally incur higher shipping costs. Carriers often use volumetric weight to calculate charges, considering both the weight and dimensions of the parcel.
Shipping Method: The choice of shipping method also plays a role in determining costs. Expedited services usually come with a higher price tag, while standard shipping may take longer but could be more cost-effective.
Customs and Duties: Shipping to Trinidad requires compliance with customs regulations. Duties and taxes may apply to imported goods, adding to the overall expenses.
Carrier and Service Level: Different shipping carriers offer varying rates and service levels. Researching and comparing carriers can help you find the best deals for your specific needs.
Shipping Options to Trinidad
1. Courier Services
Courier services like DHL, FedEx, and UPS offer reliable and expedited shipping options to Trinidad. These carriers provide door-to-door service, ensuring your packages reach their destination safely and efficiently. While courier services might be more expensive than other shipping methods, they offer speed, tracking capabilities, and the convenience of hassle-free shipping.
2. Freight Forwarders
Freight forwarding companies specialize in arranging shipments on behalf of businesses and individuals. They consolidate multiple shipments into larger containers, reducing overall shipping costs. Freight forwarding can be a cost-effective option for bulk shipments or commercial goods.
3. Postal Services
National postal services, such as the United States Postal Service (USPS), also offer shipping to Trinidad. While USPS may provide a more economical choice, it might lack some of the features offered by private courier services. Postal shipments may take longer to arrive, but they can be a suitable option for non-urgent deliveries or smaller parcels.
Calculating Shipping Costs
Before finalizing your shipment to Trinidad, it's essential to have a clear understanding of the potential costs involved. To calculate shipping expenses accurately, consider the following:
Package Details: Measure and weigh your package accurately, including its dimensions. Use the larger of the actual weight and volumetric weight to calculate shipping costs.
Shipping Method: Choose the most appropriate shipping method based on your budget and delivery timeline. Compare the rates of different carriers to find the best fit for your needs.
Customs and Duties: Research Trinidad's customs regulations and factor in any applicable duties and taxes for your goods.
Insurance: Consider adding shipping insurance to protect your package from loss or damage during transit.
Tips for Smooth Shipping to Trinidad
Accurate Labeling: Ensure all shipping labels and customs declarations are accurate and complete to avoid delays and potential issues with customs clearance.
Packaging: Use sturdy and appropriate packaging materials to protect your items during transit. Fragile items should be properly cushioned to prevent damage.
Tracking: Opt for shipping services that offer package tracking. Tracking allows you to monitor the progress of your shipment and provides peace of mind.
Delivery Time: Plan your shipments well in advance, considering the estimated delivery time to Trinidad. This is especially important for time-sensitive goods.
Customs Documentation: Familiarize yourself with Trinidad's customs documentation requirements to ensure smooth clearance of your goods.
Conclusion
Ship to Trinidad can be a seamless experience with careful planning and the right choice of shipping method. By understanding the factors that influence shipping costs and selecting reliable carriers, you can ensure your packages reach their destination in Trinidad efficiently and cost-effectively. Whether you are a business owner looking to expand into the Caribbean market or an individual sending a thoughtful gift, a well-executed shipping strategy will leave you satisfied with the results.
