I was really struggling to figure out how to include the dogs’ names in the calendar - I tried having it directly above the dog or even wrapped around their silhouette, but it just felt out of place. I finally experimented with their names below the month - as if to say, this month’s rescue special is... but that was too many words. 

I decided to try featuring - but decided that the abbreviation ‘ft.’ was more generation appropriate, and almost felt like they were guest artists featuring on a song. This vibe was perfect - uplifting and celebrating and focusing totally on the featured dog, instead of treating it like a drag or a burden or a charity case. 

For Gemini, I didn’t do a recognisable holiday as there won't be a holiday for every month - but a lot of the Auckland Council adoptable have fun names - Geminis are born in a certain astrological period, so I decided to capitalise on that and have her featured in her birth month with birthday celebration accessories. 

In future iterations, it would be interesting to see what else I could do - could I continue to play on dogs’ names? Eg - have Rowan the husky surrounded by rowan berries? Have Tulip surrounded by tulips? Or could I do it seasonally? And just have the dogs in weather-appropriate garb, instead of holiday garb for the months like February/august/September when there are no super recognisable holidays?

Now Mollie’s ready to stretch her legs – at any price. Her Antarctic cruise has a price tag of £7,000 (“at 40 per cent off the normal price”), an unheard-of splurge for pre-pandemic Mollie.

“This is the biggest trip I have ever booked,” she says. “The only big trip I did before the pandemic was climbing Kilimanjaro, but it cost under £1,000 and I took two weeks off work.”

Revenge travel began as an American trend. With foreign countries opening quicker to the US than to the UK earlier this summer, travellers from the States visibly shrugged off formerly conscientious work ethics or frugal principles and started booking bigger, better, longer trips.

Professionals who might formerly have squeezed in short city breaks or spent long weekends just outside of town splashed hundreds on flights to Europe. People cashed in sabbaticals and quit their jobs. Conde Nast Traveler US heralded the rise of the “adult gap year”.

Now that destinations are opening up to the UK in earnest, Brits are ready for their own taste of revenge.

A Eurofins survey of 2,000 UK residents last week found that more than half are saving all of their spare cash for their next adventure, with an average travel fund of £2,543 already squirrelled away.

Moreover, 36 per cent have been putting off other big spends, such as home improvements, in order to funnel maximum cash into the revenge travel pot.

“People are ‘taking revenge’ on Covid and the journeys they missed out on during 2020,” says Tom Marchant, founder of high-end adventure travel company Black Tomato. “For many, that means going big and booking a bucket list trip, or planning something indulgent and meaningful. There’s a strong desire to make up for lost time and compensate for lost trips.”

The operator has seen a surge of long-lead bookings for 2022 and 2023 – mostly to safari destinations such as Botswana, Uganda or Rwanda, but also to Chile, Japan, New Zealand and Southeast Asia.

TripAdvisor’s Travel Index report for autumn, released today, found that Millennial and Gen Z travellers are most committed to vengeful travels.

For HR advisor Emily Ellwood, 29, revenge meant booking two honeymoons. Having lovingly planned three weeks off in September 2021 to explore Sri Lanka and the Maldives, she and husband Alex were able to get married, after two postponements – but the red list kept them away from the Indian Ocean.

The couple’s higher-than-usual pandemic savings meant the original trip was quickly paid off, and once it became clear that it wouldn’t happen in 2021, they moved it back by a year – an indulgent first anniversary trip to look forward to.

But Ellwood wasn’t giving up those hard-negotiated three weeks off to be employee of the year.

Covid, she says, has given her a new perspective: “You don’t know what time you will be given, so I want to enjoy the time I know I have – which is right now.”

Instead, she and Alex are spending those weeks on a grand Italian tour, hitting up 11 swish stops including Venice, Cinque Terre, Florence and Positano.

“It’s important to keep refreshed by taking time away from work,” agrees Alex. “The only time off we’ve had this year is when we had Covid, so we needed time to unwind. And we still have next year’s holiday to look forward to!”

The HSBC NZ Sevens Rugby Series is played in Hamilton, from 21 January 2023 to 22 January 2023. The HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series heads to Hamilton, New Zealand for the first event of the 2023 calendar year, with the 12 Women’s and 16 Men’s teams in action from 21-22 January.

The organizers previously announced that the 2023 edition of the tournament which has been on New Zealand’s sporting calendar for more than two decades, will see the addition of a second playing field next to FMG Stadium Waikato to enable the full men’s and women’s draws to be played.

Fans will be able to access both fields with party zones, family zones, circus rides, as well as a wide array of food all part of the organizers’ plans.

Although there has been no official confirmation from World Rugby which 7 hosts will have the sevens events for the new structured season after this year, all of the media reports suggest this could be the last time Hamilton hosts the Sevens.

New Zealand Rugby confirmed World Rugby would not be choosing New Zealand in World Rugby’s decision to “remodel” the series into combined men’s and women’s tournaments, to be played in seven yet-to-be disclosed countries from late 2023.

The Brian Perry Stand has five levels which are home to function spaces including corporate lounges, function lounges, the boardroom, management offices, player changing facilities, retail concessions, media facilities and seating for around 10,000 for sporting events.

FMG Stadium Waikato has the crowd capacity for around 25,000. For the HSBC NZ Sevens this is made up of around 10,000 in the Brian Perry Stand, 9,000 in the WEL Networks Stand, 5,000 on the Greenzone grass embankment and 840 at the Goal Line Terrace.  The Stadium also has the ability to increase the capacity by 5000 with the addition of temporary seating on the Goal Line at Tristram St.

George R.R. Martin Sees His Shadow, Provides Hopeful Winds of Winter Update

February 2 is an important date on the United States calendar. That’s the day when a beleaguered, snow-stricken nation casts its eyes to a Midwestern meteorological rodent, who then communicates to us whether spring is on the horizon or winter will last for six more weeks.

Funnily enough, this year’s Groundhog Day also indulged another increasingly frequent tradition. For, just like Punxsutawney Phil, beloved Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin emerged from his den to let us know if Winter was on the way…The Winds of Winter that is.

Martin took to his charmingly outdated Livejournal blog, fittingly titled “Not a Blog”, to give an update on The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. In years past, the author has taken to providing year-end updates on his writing progress. This year, Martin seemed to have taken the year off before publishing this surprise post in February. 

The reasons for the delay are understandable. Despite crafting the rich and expansive Westeros, Martin still lives in the same world as we do – pandemic and all. The post’s title “Reflections on a Bad Year” pretty much says it all. Still, amid all the melancholy and sadness of Martin’s latest dispatch, there is this bit of good news. 

“I wrote hundreds and hundreds of pages of THE WINDS OF WINTER in 2020,” Martin writes. “The best year I’ve had on WOW since I began it. Why? I don’t know. Maybe the isolation. Or maybe I just got on a roll. Sometimes I do get on a roll.”

It has been a long, interminable wait for the sixth installment in Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series. A Dance With Dragons arrived in summer of 2011, just a month after the first season of HBO’s adaptation Game of Thrones premiered. Since then, Thrones has wrapped up its eight-season run, and yet The Winds of Winter remains elusive. 

Martin has sounded optimistic in previous blog entries. In 2019, he told New Zealanders that they could imprison him in a small cabin overlooking a lake of sulfuric acid if the book wasn’t done by the summer of 2020. Since that deadline has passed with no Winds, the writer is now reverting back to his usual policy of “no predictions,” writing: 

“I need to keep rolling, though. I still have hundreds of more pages to write to bring the novel to a satisfactory conclusion. That’s what 2021 is for, I hope. I will make no predictions on when I will finish. Every time I do, assholes on the internet take that as a ‘promise,’ and then wait eagerly to crucify me when I miss the deadline. All I will say is that I am hopeful.”
