Sevrier day 6

Today we did get out for our ride and what a beautiful ride it was. The downside being a Saturday we probably encountered more traffic, but for a good part of the ride we either had our own lane or were on a bike path. The cycling around here is amazing and we’ve barely scratched the surface.

We stopped for morning tea in Thones. We love that here in France the bars are very happy for you to get your goodies from the boulangerie to have with your coffee. Thones is a lovely town and today the markets were on so it was chaotic.

After leaving Thones we spent time on the roads used recently here in the Tour. The scenery was absolutely stunning. We had travelled around the lake and to the other side of the mountains we see across the lake from our campsite.

From Faverges we were on the rail trail all the way back to our campground. It’s the old railroad that ran between Annecy and Albertville, 48km long. We stopped for lunch at Duingt where they have made a cycling cafe in the old train station. They had alcohol free, gluten free beer 👍�� We also had an amazing platter with saucisson, ham and cheese 😋

Back at Tessi it was time to settle in for the last big stage of the Tour. What are we going to do with our afternoons after tomorrow! All the things we should have been doing for the last 3 weeks 😂

After the Tour we walked across the road to Lidl for some groceries and then it was time to pack up the g&ts, cheese and chips and head to the lake.

Another very pleasant evening spent by Tessi eating and drinking. Apparently there’s a heatwave in Europe that we’re currently avoiding. We’re a bit worried about what will await us when we return to L’Escala in early August, though currently the weather looks just moderately warmer than here.

LES 3 COLS MATERIEL VELO

A La Tour de Salvagny, le 9 mai 2024

Ce jeudi de l’ascension est le jour de la cylo Les 3 cols brillamment organisée par le Tac Cyclo et je ne manque pas ce rendez-vous depuis de nombreuses éditions. Le grand parcours de 141km et 2800m de D+ fait la part belle aux monts du Lyonnais avec pratiquement pas un mètre de plat ! La météo est au rendez-vous ce coup-ci : une peu de fraicheur matinale mais le soleil brille.

Sur la ligne de départ aux côtés de Clément Cambier ou Cédric Sagnol je ne réfléchit pas trop à la tactique du jour : avec une impressionnante start list emmenée par un contingent Matériel Vélo où tous leurs coureurs peuvent espérer gagner ou presque, il faut aussi compter, comme chaque année, sur des élites, coureurs FFC, anciens pro ou pro en activité ainsi que de nombreux brillants cyclosportifs. Il s’agira donc de suivre aux avant-postes en tentant de ne pas rater les bons coups pour espérer un top 20.

9h45 ça part sans retard, de façon neutralisée jusqu’au casino de Charbonnières, avant le coup de klaxon. Parfaitement bien placé on profite des 1eres minutes sur un bon tempo pour bien s’échauffer puis la fête aux attaques commence avec les MV à la baguette : rapidement Aurélien Lionnet et Simon Combes s’évadent tandis qu’un contre tente de s’organiser avec Clément en chien de garde. Derrière ça accélère mais sans entente alors je tente avec Alban Lacaille de mettre un tempo pour limiter la casse. On arrive ainsi pour la côte de Châteauvieux-Yzeron où ça attaque très fort. A 6w/kg après St-laurent-de-Vaux on revient vite sur le contre en même temps que j’ai bien du mal à rester aux avant-postes. Ça se calme légèrement pour la suite et nous sommes une grosse vingtaine à Yzeron où ça accélère ne nouveau fort pour la descente sur Thurins.

Une descente rapide sans encombre où Antony Chamerat-Dumont a pris les devants. On enchaine avec la difficile montée de Croix Perrière : autour des 5,2w/kg je mène la troupe avant de laisser faire d’autres pour la 2eme partie : tempo un peu moins soutenu qui convient à tous mais nous sommes à environ 3’ du duo de tête et 1’20 d’Antony. Je relance et on poursuit vers St-Martin-en Haut puis la montée sur Duerne : aucune entente, les attaques se succèdent sans arrêt avec les MV qui contrôlent tout mais à chaque fois c’est de gros efforts. Je refais un peu le tempo avant le sommet puis sur le replat aidé par Alban avant une partie descendante nous emmenant pour une 1ere montée sur Aveize. Et ça revisse très sévèrement ; à gros coup de 400/500 voir 600W je traine en fin de groupe mais résiste et passe au sommet dans les roues pour une longue descente jusqu’à Ste-Foy-l’Argentière : encore des attaques au début (je tente même un coup à 2), puis ça se calme pour la fin et la 2eme montée sur Aveize, plus longue et plus dure cette fois-ci.

J’imprime le rythme mais très vite Julien Rege Gianas prend les commandes : autour des 5,3w/kg je serre les dents mais tiens bon : au sommet on n’a pourtant pas perdu grand monde et les attaques reprennent sur la partie plate nous ramenant à Duerne. J’ai bien du mal à me ravitailler que voilà déjà la descente que l’on attaque avec 5’30 de retard sur les hommes de tête : encore en fin de groupe je garde bien ma place contrairement à Julien mais en bas ça relance très fort et le groupe se casse : 6 ou 7 s’échappent puis 2 ou 3 font le jump pour rentrer tandis que je tente de résister dans les roues des autres. On limite bien la casse jusqu’à Montromant puis je fini par lâcher avec Jordan Torgue tandis que les autres réussissent à revenir juste avant la petite route de Faverges. A 20’’ on n’est pas loin mais c’est terminé ! Les jambes ne répondent plus dans les terribles pourcentages de cette partie ; je reste accroché tant bien que mal à la roue de Jordan, on reprend même Antony en craquage et on finit ce col ces Brosses à 3 où je ne peux rien faire d’autre que tenter de garder les roues. Dans la descente sur Yzeron mon sursis tombe ; Antony relance très fort ; je cède 1 mètre, puis 2… game over ; il va falloir finir les 36 derniers km seul !

Aucun espoir sur la roulante route des Crêtes : le duo creuse mais j’aperçois un maillot Matériel Vélo (Alexandre Langlais il me semble) en craquage : je le reprend au sommet et on roule ensemble quelques instants mais ils saute avant la descente du col de la Luère. De nouveau seul, je descends proprement et en tentant de garder ou retrouver un peu d’énergie. En bas à la Brévenne les crampes font leur traditionnelle apparition après cette descente mais j’arrive à les faire passer puis direction la côte de St-Pierre-la-Palud et son passage à plus de 20%. Alors que je suis sur un tout petit tempo, Julien revient de l’arrière (seul heureusement) ; je prends ça roue jusqu’au mur où je cale sévèrement… Il reste alors 13kms pour rallier l’arrivée sans se faire reprendre : le vulgaire faux plat de Lentilly est aussi dur qu’un col mais j’ai la chance qu’un concurrent du petit parcours parvienne à prendre ma roue. Il va me passer quelques relais bienvenus jusqu’à la descente du casino de Charbonnières où il ne reste plus qu’à remonter jusqu’à l’arrivée : autour des 300W je contrôle mes arrières et finit sereinement pour une 19eme place scratch et 1er de catégorie !

Quelques minutes plus tôt le vainqueur portait bien un maillot matériel vélo comme prévu en la personne de Dimitri Bussard qui aura repris et déposé Aurélien et Simon 2eme et 3eme. Le top 5, 100% MV, est compléter par Adrien Guillonnet et Clément. Pas trop de regret me concernant même s’il est rageant de se retrouver seul pour finalement pas grand-chose mais au vu de mes forces dans cette 2eme partie de course, je n’aurai pu y jouer aucun rôle. Satisfaction en revanche de remporter ma catégorie d’âge pas si simple non plus avec la présence de Cédric Sagnol ou Krzyszof Skupke notamment même si l’adversaire le plus coriace aura été Lionel Poletti arrivé 20eme au sein d’un trio juste 1’ derrière moi… ouf !

Gros doute sur le 17eme (catégorie D donc + de 50ans) qu’on ne voit pas sur les photos du groupe de tête ?!

Our Lady of the Grotto, Mellieħa, Malta: The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa is a Marian shrine in the village of Mellieħa in Malta. It was originally constructed in the late 16th century and contains a Byzantine-style fresco, depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary with Christ on her right arm.   Tradition has it that the painting was made by St Luke when he was shipwrecked on the island with St Paul.   The church expanded several times to accommodate the growing population of the village and the roofed veranda is considered a classic example of 17th century Renaissance architecture.   The sanctuary was blessed by St Pope John Paul II during his visit to Malta in May 1990.

Martyrs of the Hulks of Rochefort/Martyrs of La Rochelle – 64 beati: In 1790 the French Revolutionary authorities passed a law requiring priests to swear allegience to the civil constitution, which would effectively remove them from the authority of and allegience to, Rome. Many refused and in 1791 the government began deporting them to French Guyana. 827 priests and religious were imprisoned on hulks (old ships no longer sea-worthy and used for storage, jails, hospitals, etc.) at Rochefort, France to await exile, most on the Deux-Associés and the Washington which had previously been used to house slaves or prisoners. There they were basically ignored to death as there was little provision for food and water, less for sanitation and none at all for medical help. 542 of the prisoners died there. The survivors were freed on 12 February 1795 and allowed to return to their homes. Stomach (aches) - Tie around the belly a belt made of seven cabbage leaves; choose an odd day for the operation. (Chaponnay, Rhône, around 1930.) - Drink brandy in which a snake's robe has macerated. (Innimont, Ain.)

Sunstroke                                                                                                              - The reddened part was rubbed with vinegar. (Dolomieu, Isère.) At Innimont, the sun's rays were concentrated on the burnt area using a white glass bottle.

Lumbago - To make it disappear, you carry a chestnut in your pocket for at least eight days. (Vénissieux, Rhône.)

White evil - Urinate on the sore several times a day and grease the diseased finger with lard. (Innimont, 1920.) Place a plaster of badger fat on the disease (Vaux-en-Bugey).

Seasickness - Place a sprig of parsley on the breast. (Saint-Priest, Rhône; Corbas, Rhône, 1952.)

Wasp or bee stings All over the place, to avoid swelling and activate healing, we rub with seven different herbs.

Wounds - Prepare a decoction of white broth and wash the wound several times in a row. (Heyrieux, Isère.) - Have a dog lick the wound (Innimont).

Kidneys (sore) - We are looking for a large anthill, of those found in the mountains. Boiling water is poured over it to kill the ants. We then wrap the twigs with the dead ants in a canvas towel and use it as a poultice. (Custom still in force around 1950 in Brides-les-Bains, Savoie; communicated by Mlle Dominique Martin.)

Cold - We prepared hot sweet wine in which we dipped the end of the red-hot poker, and we drank very hot. (Innimont, 1930.)

- Against the common cold, one aspirated by the nose of the coarse salt crushed with a bottle. (Innimont, Ain; Dolomieu, Isère.)

Nosebleed - Place a cold key on the neck (Innimont, Dolomieu). - Cover your nostrils with a tampon of yarrow. This use of yarrow has earned it the popular names of “bleeding - nose” in Innimont, Serpaise, Simandres ... or “stop blood” in Faverges-de-la-Tour.

Warts - Rub the wart with the milk of celandine, called for this reason "wart grass". This use of celandine is very common in our region. - In Innimont, Ain, we rub ourselves with the liquid from the scales of the houseleek; in Dolomieu, Isère, with the foam of the water of a stream. - Around 1920, we tie the wart with a linen thread soaked in brandy and wait for the wart to fall off.

Worms A large number of remedies against worms were once known, each more infallible than the last. Most are well known. We will only give the following (...): take an earthworm, heat a frying pan red, throw the earthworm on it, let it reduce to ashes, make the child swallow the ashes.

Eyes (diseases of) - A maceration of cornflower flowers in brandy was a good remedy against eye diseases, hence the name "glasses breaker" sometimes given to blueberries. (Dolomieu, Isère; Ambérieu-en-Bugey Valencin, Isère.) - In Dolomieu, we also rubbed our eyes with the sap of the vine. - Wearing earrings also warded off eye pain, (Dolomieu, Isère; Chaufailles, S.-et-L.)
