Fish of the Day
Today's fish of the day is the Giant isopod!
The giant isopod, describes around 20 species in the Bathynomus genus, but most information is based on the Bathynomus giganteus, which is known for being the first giant isopod discovered, and the largest. Giant isopods, as an arthropod, have seven pairs of legs, four jaws, and compound eyes that have over 4,000 facets. The first set of legs is modified into an appendage for grabbing food and bringing it into the mouth, along with attacking prey, and all species with the Bathynomus genus are similar, showing a lack of evolution between populations The full range of this family is unknown, but they can be found around the Indo-Pacific and the Eastern Atlantic ocean. The first time a giant isopod was found and recorded was in 1879 in the Gulf of Mexico, where the largest populations of giant isopods live, with a depth range of 310-2140 meters of depth. Outside of the Gulf of Mexico the other populations have a near identical depth range, and due to their similarity to their close land dwelling cousins, rolly pollies or woodlouse as you might know them, they are one of the textbook examples of deep sea gigantism.
Deep sea gigantism is an observed phenomena where deep sea animals have a habit of getting far larger than their more shallow relatives. Examples of this would be the giant squid, giant sea spider, deepwater stingrays, the bigfin squid, oarfish, and many more. There is currently no encompassing explanation for why this phenomena is so prevalent, but there are multiple theories that have been proven partially correct by different genus. Food scarcity is often referenced, and often thought to be the reason for the giant isopods' large size. as without much food in the deep ocean organisms with the ability to store more food can live for longer periods without prey. Another explanation is the increase in dissolved oxygen, which is often a limiting factor in how large animals can become in their environments. A study of amphipod crustaceans in 1999 discovered their increase in size as the populations found in deeper waters directly increased with the amount of dissolved oxygen. The last and often most damning explanation for deep sea gigantism is the lowered temperature in deeper waters. This one can increase the size in animals by increasing cell size and lifespan, something that can also be found at the world's poles. Deep sea gigantism allows for the giant isopod to get anywhere between 19-36cm (7.5-14.3 inches) in length, with the largest recorded being 20 inches, about the size of a small dog. As compared to their close land relatives, which come in at less than an inch of length.

The diet of the deep sea isopod is remarkably similar to that of the land dwelling isopods, as the land dwelling isopods live off of dead or decomposing animals or plant materials. Which is similar to the diet of the giant isopod, which is an essential scavenger and carnivore in the deep. Once believed to be only scavengers, it is now known that giant isopods also actively pursue prey, usually fish, squid, shrimp, crabs, and other deep sea animals they can catch, as shown by a video of an isopod grabbing a dogfish shark and eating its face. These isopods can take down prey several times larger than them, but this may be only when in a confined space, as they don't swim fast and can only attack prey they can catch. But, as scavengers in the deep the giant isopod is primarily known for eating from whalefalls. A whalefall being when the carcass of a dead whale drifts to the deep seafloor, creating huge ecosystem hotspots and specialized animals in deep waters that feed almost exclusively on them. After eating from these whalefalls, giant isopods have been shown to go as long as 5 years in captivity without eating again, and for this reason when in the presence of food they eat far more than their body weight or size, willing to sacrifice locomotion in favor of excess, an easy trade considering they have no natural predators. Despite having no predators, they still have several behaviors similar to land pill bugs, as they can still roll into a ball shape, using their chitin armor to protect themselves, and burrow into the sediment to semi-hibernate.

The reproduction of the giant deep sea isopod is like that of many other arthropods, relying on eggs. In the spring and winter months the isopod females will begin brooding eggs, this is done in a pouch above the stomach and it will store anywhere between 20-30 eggs. During the brooding the female will burrow down into the sediment and refuses to leave until all eggs are hatched, at which point the juveniles are left. Captive isopods eggs measure 13mm in diameter and are thought to possibly be the largest marine invertebrate egg. Once born, these juvenile giant isopods will be as large as 4 inches in length ,and set off on their own in a stage called manca. At this stage, these are almost fully developed giant isopods, lacking only the last pair of legs. These will grow over time, and these animals gain size through molts. Their full lifespan is unknown, but estimated to be decades long, with the age of sexual maturity being unknown but estimated anywhere from 15-18 months.

Have a good day, everybody!

worshiper, delusional, & nurturing
──── Carlos Oliveira hates the scent of ink. Yet still, his hands are covered in the excess of the relentless use of such.
It stains everything. His ragged clothes, his fingers, the top secret documents he couldn't be bothered to care after. Despite his loathing of the material, it somehow seems to follow him with every step he walks. It doesn't take away the sheer relief he feels when he uses the same ink to jot down everything in his journal. While Carlos is far from home and occupied with his position as a Corporal, he fills pages upon pages of entries assigned to you. From how he swore he heard your laughter at lunch that day to obsessive hours spent writing your name over and over again, he finds it soothing, in an odd sense. Everything the ink touches revolves around you in some shape or form.
Y/N L/N. The name he will never forget.
Carlos remembers your aromatic sweat, your intoxicating breath, your perfumed skin; he will never forget how you ended his life in Raccoon City. It was persephonic, the last day of his life. Through the maze of chaos and gore, he found you, his little taste of heaven before he would face his demise. However, he is still shamefully alive. And selfishly, Carlos wishes that he had died that night. He should be grateful, as insinuated by the thousands of innocent lives lost and his family thanking the universe for sparing their boy. But, he just isn't. He can't, as much as he tries.
Even though his heart still beats, something within him has been dead for these past five years. He tries to heal his soul which decomposes with every day that goes by, but his efforts are brought to no avail. As much as he attempts to write out the fairytale he desperately wishes would materialize into reality, the truth sits and rots beneath a canopy of pretty lies.
You are dead and there is nothing he can do about it.
If Carlos thinks too much about it, he'll be brought to tears. And he can't afford another days-long meltdown filled with unruly sobbing and staggering guilt. He just can't. Instead, he defiles his brain with dreams of you that he deludes himself into believing are real. Writing his sweet spouse letters while he is away from home, buying you trinkets and clothes from foreign places, and leaving behind warm plates of food for you to enjoy. The truth of your well-being dances in the back of his head like a ghost in an attic. However, fully acknowledging you are gone would just about kill him. Carlos will prolong it as long as it can, no matter how fast the inevitable truth gains on him.
"My honey, My sweet, My lover. I will be home soon. Please wait for me, my bumblebee." Ink stains Carlos' fingers as he jots down yet another letter to you. He wonders if you also hate the way ink stains your fingers when you finally write back to him. His heart swells when he imagines you receiving his letter all safe and cozy in the home you share together. One day, he'll receive a letter back from you. The ghost of the truth lurks in the mind, but he turns his back to it. One day, he'll receive a letter back from you.
Five years without you and all that sunshine and wit he used to possess has depleted. Now, it's impossible to know when the ticking time bomb that is Carlos Oliveira may explode.
Unbeknownst to his peers, every emotion expressed is a manifestation of you, whether good or bad. After working the day away, Carlos becomes agitated after such treacherous hours without being able to bathe his mind in the light of you. The anger suffocates whatever room he walks into, causing the people within to recoil from the energy alone. No one has forgotten the time when a few colleagues had poked the bear after a single day Carlos spent unable to return to the thought of you. This inevitably caused an hour-long outburst of broken bones, furniture thrown about, and an eruption of unconsolable tears and horrifying threats. The memory still sends goosebumps across the skin of witnesses and no one has dared to cross the man ever since.
All Carlos needs is to venture back to the lustrous haven within his head. Just you and him, together in extraterrestrial bliss. It's all he needs, please let him have it.
All he needs is indulge in the heavenly sights of you at this moment. Instead of the blood-stained reality that is his life, let him spend his days out in the wild with you. Breezy Summer days where the sun beats down and soaks you in its golden, empyrean hues. Carlos sits with his back against the trunk of a willow tree and you lay on a blanket with your head resting in his lap. The enchanting, peaceful state he has found himself in is almost enough to lull him into a slumber. But, how could he dare shut his eyes when the astonishing sight of you sits right before him? Carlos traces his fingers among the tracings of sunlight that peek through the branches and rest upon your face. Beautiful. How irrevocably, indubitably, catastrophically beautiful you are.
A picnic out in an empty field where the day would be spent letting the world fall away as he looks down on the love of his life. Your lips, ever-so appetizing, are dusted with sugar from the numerous treats Carlos made for this exact date. His hand cups your cheek and he caresses your cheekbone with his thumb, your smile growing in response. And the way it tugs on his heartstrings is almost as if your mere happiness was playing him like a string instrument. He gazes at you with so much wonder, it's practically baffling how in love a man could be. You offer him a bite of the pastry in your hand, but he declines. The heat of the season's temperatures and the burning love within Carlos is more than enough to keep him satiated.
Safe, content, and alive with love. There couldn't be a more perfect way to describe this precious moment with you. Safe, content, and alive with love.
A hand waving in his face brings him back to his unforgiving reality. No more sunshine, no more birdsong, no more you. The dread that permeates his entire being could rival the pain of being stabbed in the heart. Carlos jumps in surprise and casts his eyes upward to find Tyrell, whose worried eyes peer at him through the glasses perched on his nose. His body is tense, terrified of treading over a boundary and causing another outburst. Only this time, he fears the several guards with syringes that were able to make him comply before would fail this time. And Tyrell wouldn't be able to escape Carlos' wrath with his life.
However, in the head of Carlos, he can't fathom why his colleague was suddenly so afraid of him. Maybe it was the way his expression was entirely unconscious. Maybe it was the way his eyes were wide and distant, in a completely different world. Maybe it was the way his lips would twitch into a smile that would be deemed creepy or maybe it was how he whispered unintelligible sentences under his breath. All of this remains unknown to Carlos, as he was far too busy in la-la-land to pay attention to his surroundings. Tyrell then motions to the ground, where Carlos finds how his pen had managed to roll across the floor and how his journal was now sitting face-down against the concrete. When did he drop those?
"Are you okay, man?" The question echoes as if he was standing miles away from him. Is he? Is he ok? These days, it never really feels like it. Only when he can escape to his paradise does he truly feel okay.
"You kept saying something. Over and over again." Carlos can barely render the words spoken by his friend.
"Y/N. Who is that-?"
Something snaps within Carlos. The fireworks you have ignited inside him have been snuffed out like a cigarette; the skipping of his heart trips over itself like a child sprinting down a jagged sidewalk. Your name alone sitting on someone else's tongue is more than enough to send him spiraling into an envious frenzy. You've never even met this poor man, but Carlos' brain infests his thoughts with visions of you and Tyrell together. This parasite paints images of you in the same field, in each other's arms, hopelessly devoted to one another. Happy with one another. And the stifling jealousy practically makes Carlos maniacal. It should be him, it should be him. He doesn't deserve it, but it should be him with you. Not Tyrell, never him, please not him please choose me please just choose me I will do anything baby please-
Carlos doesn't even think before he's swinging his right arm back and surging it forward to Tyrell's face. He can't win, he can't win, he can't. Permeating pain flashes like a flickering light and it courses through his entire arm. This sudden flare of weakness grants Tyrell the opportunity to block the attack before it lands. He now just stares at his friend in complete horror. Carlos falls to the floor of the infirmary and inspects the source of pain, finding that his right bicep has been covered in thick gauze. What was once white and clean is now tattered with blood-red stains. The memories hit him like a train. How could he have forgotten? Was he so caught up in his fantasies that he failed to recall what happened mere hours ago?
One of the most prominent and more so realistic fantasies (in his opinion) Carlos has is of you in heaven, watching over him like his own personal guardian angel. To finally accept your death would shatter him entirely, but to think of how your soul has lived on and is now living in promised eternal bliss calms his stuttering heart. His relentless acknowledgment of this fantasy has caused disastrous side effects, however. Behind the scenes, he has caught himself on many occasions contemplating death. To indulge in his demise and to see you on the other side, Carlos knows it shouldn't make him this exhilarated. Still, he continues to wallow in the celestial phenomenon of joining you in the clouds.
He refuses to fulfill these suicidal tendencies for the sole reason of how you'd perceive him afterward. You had ever so bravely lost your life to the wreckage of Raccoon City; you died a fucking warrior. Whom would Carlos be if he simply ended the torment by slitting his wrists? The echo of your voice barking of how much of a coward he'd be for killing himself over such dramatic, puny reasons makes Carlos recoil in shame. This obsession of his has accelerated to a degree where he'll purposely slack off during missions, hoping that he'll be fatally caught in the crossfire. A bullet through the brain and he'd wake up beside you, where you'll praise him for his bravery and how he died a hero.
To reunite with you — that is the only thing Carlos could ever want.
Today was no different. Yet, while his comrades shout for him to take cover and question why he is being such an idiot, it finally happened. Barrelling through the air is a bullet, which buries itself into the flesh of his right arm. The force sends Carlos to the ground. When others try to take hold of him and drag him to safety, he swats them off like they're nothing but pesky mosquitoes on a humid July afternoon. And he laughs so loudly and so manically, it could almost convince the enemy that the Corporal is secretly the Joker.
It all makes sense now. You had broken your right arm five years ago and now, Carlos has been shot in the exact same arm. This must be you! This must be your way of lending your hand through the sky, guiding him to join you in heaven! You are here with him and Carlos can't restrict the genuine smile and streaming tears from forming on his face. Now, however, the wounds your tender heart left have now been cared for. These doctors have defiled your mark on him; they have sullied the gift you have so kindly given him. And the fury that bubbles inside of Carlos in response is nothing short of harrowing.
Through the heaving breaths of the man he once considered to be his friend, Tyrell finally speaks up with a waver in his voice. "You-You need help, Carlos. I don't know who Y/N is, but-"
"YOU SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!" Carlos' outburst explodes and the ringing of it settles like a blast wave. It bounces off the walls and reverberates through the ears of both men.
The anger is practically palpable. What Tyrell failed to notice through that rageful veneer was the pieces of Carlos' broken heart that lies beneath. With every passing second, this phantom within him reminds him of the state of your well-being. You're dead, you're gone, I won't see you ever again. With naivety Carlos excuses as the truth, he continues to ignore this voice. He has been stuck in a five-year-long chase with his logic and will continue running for five more if he needs to. And slowly but surely, this endless race is tearing him apart.
Tyrell leaves without so much as another breath. One question stays heavy on his mind, though. Whoever you are, Y/N, what the fuck have you done to him?
The patient must be given PTO to avoid another breakdown that could potentially accelerate into lethal violence — that was the "excuse" the doctors gave to the Sergeant regarding Carlos' wellbeing. This leaves him here. Alone and driving back to his estate. Meanwhile, his brain is blooming with iridescent fantasies he claims to be memories. Driving home to you after a long day of work and bringing you all the money and love you could ever ask for. He wonders, would you wait for him to come home? Would he find you asleep on the sofa, succumbing to your drowsiness before he'd be able to open the door? Or would you be in the bedroom? The soft glow of the lamp light framing your face as you peel back the covers, welcoming him into your idyllic embrace?
The tires of his car begin to skid off the road. Carlos is brought out of his imagination, where he then jerks the vehicle back into its proper position in the lane. You may just be the death of him, he muses. And when he finally arrives home, he tries to ignore the love letters he sent to you piling in the mailbox, the trinkets and clothes he bought you collecting dust, and the dinner he left for you that is now putrid and overwhelmed with mold. He tries to avoid how much it actually kills him. But still, this aching sense of dread rots in the pit of his stomach. It isn't until he glances at the calendar pinned on the wall does the devastation finally settle like fresh snow.
The date today was September 28th, 2004.
Six years.
It's been six years since he survived Raccoon City; it's been six years since he met you and lost you on the same night. This isn't the first revelation that comes to mind, though. Instead, he feels absolutely mortified by his own negligence. It's your sixth-year anniversary, how could he have forgotten? What kind of person, boyfriend, husband is he to forget this day? He should have brought home chocolate, flowers, shit, maybe even taken you on a month-long vacation to a resort across the world. God, how could he be so fucking stupid? You two could have been at each other's side during the most important day of the year (besides your birthday, of course). But no, he just had to get so caught up in his head that he forgot the anniversary of the day that made him the man he is today.
Another epiphany, one of the much more luminescent standards, hits Carlos once again. This must be why you had never written back to him. You aren't dead, you're simply upset with him! All the letters, all the gifts, all the plates of food, everything you have neglected — it was just your way of expressing your anger. Ha, take that, brain! And despite the circumstances, Carlos imagines the scowl on your face and is absolutely giddy from the vision alone. You're upset with him, yes, but you're alive. His sweet lover is here with a beating heart and an angry head. And God, does it make Carlos practically shiver with glee.
He then storms through his house, looking into every nook and cranny in search of you. "Y/N? Honey? Honey, it's me! Look, I know you're upset, but I promise I will do everything I can to make it up to you!"
"Where would you like to go? Hawaii? Paris? Shit, Italy? Wherever you'd like, Y/N!" With each room left devoid of you, that wrenching misery returns piece by piece and yanks on what is left of his heart. His voice begins to crack as he continues to shout for you. "Y/N, please! Please come out, honey! I'll do anything, Y/N... Please..."
Carlos then collapses to the hardwood floor, his body crushed with the sobs now protruding from his chest. Tears pour down his cheeks with uncontrollable force before landing on the ground beneath. And he cries so violently that he fears his ribcage may shatter from the force of it alone. He can't accept it, he can't, he can't, he can't. Even if this is what the rest of his life looks like, just veiling the truth with delusional fantasies, Carlos will never face the honest conclusion. He just can't.
"Please, bumblebee... I need you..." It's a final, desperate prayer. For your presence or for mercy, Carlos isn't exactly sure which.
He then digs beneath the collar of his shirt and fishes out the necklace he has worn for six years now. Swung upon a rusted chain is the charm of a bumblebee, the yellow and black shades now decayed with age. Carlos (as forgetful as he now realized he is today) will never forget when he first received the necklace. It was right before you had boarded the subway train that would eventually lead to your departure from life. How you enveloped him in your sugar-sweet hug and the way your natural musk sat on your skin still drives him nuts after all these years. The memory brings him great comfort on restless nights spent tossing and turning in bed.
At that moment, however, he never realized how constricting his hold was on you until he hears something snap. Opening his eyes and awakening from the stupor of his cartoon-esque infatuation, he finds how he had underestimated his strength and crushed the clasp of your necklace. The state of your beloved jewelry piece is left oblivious to you. Carlos wasn't given a second to process what had happened before you're peeling your arms off of him and boarding the train. In his hands are the remnants of the necklace you left behind.
The insect symbolizes perseverance, which he finds is a perfect way to describe his life today. Persevering through every day until he can finally let his body rest six feet under; persevering through every day until he can join his honey, his bumblebee through the gates of heaven. Carlos presses another kiss of millions to the pendant as he sits in his lonely house, pretending it is your skin beneath his lips instead of the rusted metal. His heart is shattered, his body is weak, and his brain is infested with every kind of mayhem he has ever known, but he will push through it. He will push through any and all kind of chaos knowing you are at the end of the finish line. Waiting for him.
The quick tune of an email alert brings Carlos out of his lovesick, grief-burdened daze. Suddenly being torn away from the thought of you makes rage flood through his veins. He stomps over to shut his computer off, maybe even throw the monitor against the wall in the process. When he catches a glimpse of what is on his computer, he hesitates. A loud gasp then escapes from him.
On his computer is an email from an old friend.
Carlos is able to fly into the country in less than twenty-four hours. He has to take several deep breaths in order to eradicate the black dots dancing in his vision as he races to Jill's apartment. Seeing her face and the present relief in her expression, the all-too-overwhelming revelation settles. Carlos is surprised he hadn't blacked out right there on her doorstep in response. It's time to finally get you back.
And just like Jill and Carlos had orchestrated after two weeks of planning how they'd release you from Umbrella's clutches, one sip of the cup of tea in your hands and you were out like a light. Your collapse was harsh, evident in the loud thud that permeated when you landed. Fortunately, you had your blanket-cape there to cushion your fall. It doesn't stop the two from bursting the bathroom door open and rushing to your aid, however.
Without your knowledge, Jill and Carlos then proceed to take you far, far away from the place you had once called home.
"What the fuck?"
Despite knowing you were sleeping soundly just several rooms over, your sudden presence still manages to have their breath locked in their throat. The way you look at one another contradicts each other in such discrete ways, it's almost comical. You're hyperventilating, staring at the scene in front of you with eyes blown in crazed shock. Six years of grieving through the most traumatic night of your life, why is it now you find out they have been alive this whole time? These two, however, stare into your soul with so much wonder, you're almost convinced they thought they were looking at some sort of mythological creature. It's almost as if they're hypnotized. No movement, no response — just pure amazement at the sight of you alive and looking at them with eyes full of life.
It isn't until you take a cautious step back does it trigger them to escape their state of captivation. You venturing further away from them, even just a pace — they can't let it happen. Never again. While Jill resorts to calmly approaching you as if you were a stray cat, Carlos makes an abrupt dash for you. You take several more steps backward before the man you presumed to be dead became inescapable. With another onslaught of tears brimming in his eyes and a whimper fleeing from his throat, Carlos practically tackles you into a tenacious embrace.
The hold he has on you is ridden with disbelief and desperation. He's shaking against your body like an Autumn leaf drifting through the wind. Burying his nose further into your neck, he inhales the musk that sits on your skin as if he had been trapped underwater and you were a pocket of air. God, Carlos wasn't even able to look at you for more than one second before he started blubbering like a baby. The man is so absorbed in the moment of finally reuniting with you, he almost misses it when Jill smacks him on his arm and growls through clenched teeth for him to "get his fucking shit together." But, Carlos refuses to budge. He is ready to beg Jill to let him stay here, to please let him revel in the fact that this isn't another fantasy someone will wake him out of.
He somehow nestles his face further into the crook of your neck and brings your body closer to his, almost as if he was trying to mold you together as one. And at this moment, Carlos has yet another revelation. Years upon years of imagining what heaven looks like, he was entirely incorrect. There are no clouds, no birdsong, no vibrant gardens. This. Right here in this moment, this is what heaven is. To have you, the partner of his dreams, so close to him is nothing short of heavenly. For six years, he has dreamed of this moment. And if he were to die at this moment, Carlos would be elated to know he died the happiest he has ever been in his whole life.
Meanwhile, you're thrashing in the tight hold of his constricted strength. It's almost hard for you to breathe with how hard he’s squeezing you. The woman you see over his shoulder is collected, but only a fool would miss the way her shoulders tense and nostrils flare with rage (and a sliver of possessiveness, too). She receives your silent plea and grabs a fistful of his mop-head of hair, using all the might in her arm to pull him away from his own bear hug. Carlos reluctantly loosens his grasp on your form. However, he then resorts to checking you for any and all signs of life.
The past six years have been spent dodging the logical answer to your disappearance. Now, however, the sight of you alive is just too good to be true. He begins thoroughly checking your body for a pulse, listening intently to any irregularities in your heartbeat. Anything to assure him you are actually alive and breathing. When every sign and question points to 'yes' over if you are here, Carlos can hardly contain it. Finally seeing you walking, looking, talking, alive — it's like the crescendo of a beautiful song.
Jill, as collected as she is, does not differ from Carlos' state of emotion very much. She has thought of this moment at least a million times, rehearsing every syllable and breath to make the moment all the more perfect. Now, however, every perceivable thought in her head was robbed the second you entered the room. How desperately she wishes to reassure your safety, inform you of the lies you were told, and vow to never let another soul lay a single hand on you ever again. But, with her racing heart and this grizzly bear of a man latched to you like a leech, her idea of the perfect reunion has been spoiled. Still, for six years she has longed for this. Whether it's a steamy kiss beneath the moonlight or caught in Carlos' mess of tears, she couldn't be more elated to finally have you again.
Much to your dismay, your empty stomach then grumbles its frustrations into the silent air. In response, your face grows warm in embarrassment. You had been so occupied with the current events and battling your shock, the dinner you had missed out on the night before had gone overlooked. The two, however, react much differently to your perceptible hunger than you. Without a mere second to waste, they're fawning over you as if you were some powerful deity and they were your humble, loyal servants. Their infantilizing treatment of you makes your skin burn with even more heaps of humiliation.
"Oh? Are you hungry? I've almost finished breakfast!" Carlos breaks physical contact to return to the stove and you have to restrain yourself from expressing your perceptible relief.
"I... I didn't have dinner last night." With an exhale of dry laughter, your attempt to lighten the mood only does the opposite. How could they have let you go hungry? They brought you here to care for you the way they deserve and they have already failed!
A gentle hand on your lower back causes you to jump in startlement. You find Jill beside you, who helps guide your trembling legs to the kitchen table. Though, it doesn't take a genius to notice the way her hand lingers. Finally free of any unsolicited touch, you sit down at the end of the table. The only way you can bring yourself to any state of ease is to ignore the relentless cooing of the woman beside you and the furious scraping of a spatula against a pan. Almost as if Carlos was speeding through the process of cooking in order to get back to you sooner. Jill then sits beside you, taking your hands into hers. Being free of physical contact was good while it lasted, you joke to yourself.
"You're real... You're real, my butterfly, you're real." Jill indulges in the reality of your genuine touch, before shaking her head as if to wobble her rationality back in place.
A plate is soon served before you. And it is easily the most delectable dish you had ever seen; it looked like something straight out of a magazine, despite the frivolous efforts made by the chef. A gourmet omelet sits in front of you, steam pervading the air in invading your nostrils with its mouth-watering aroma. Adorned with spinach, tomato, and feta cheese, you could have easily downed the delicious serving in one gulp. Nausea swaying in your stomach like a boat on sea prevents you from doing such. You thank Carlos through stuttering breaths and almost miss the way his body softens from receiving your gratitude.
Always so possessive, Jill reverts your attention back to her. "There is so much you are unaware of, Y/N. But, we're here to help. You don't have to be afraid a second longer." Her reassurance does little to calm your nerves. "Right, Carlos?" He only nods weakly, completely dazed as he stares at you in adoration. Had he even heard what she said?
"We will not let anything happen to you." The gravity of her statement practically touches your bones with its weight. It scares you, the severity of the declaration.
Terrified of angering them (even though there is not a single thing you could do that would ever irritate them), you grasp the fork laid out for you on the pristine table. Your efforts are halted by Carlos, who sits down beside you, opposite of Jill. To satiate his gnawing need for you to be close, he pushes his chair to touch yours until you are both shoulder-to-shoulder. After all, you must be so terrified upon being kidnapped by such an evil corporation. It is his touch and comfort you need to lull you back into a place of tranquility, he's sure of it.
Carlos then takes the fork from your hands, nearly passing out when your thumb grazes his hand. To your horror, he plucks some food onto the utensil and holds it up to your lips, ushering you to let him feed you. Almost as if this was some romantic anniversary or something. Reluctantly, you open your mouth and let him place the bite of food on your tongue. And you would be a liar if you said this wasn't the most delicious meal you have ever eaten. Your tastebuds adorned in succulent food and flavorful seasoning, you joke that this dish is compensation for all the turmoil this morning has brought.
Slowly, as Carlos was painfully milking the moment for as long as he could, your hunger is satiated. The joy he garners from merely feeding you radiates off of him like a campfire against the dark night brume. Once the plate is wiped clean of even the smallest crumb (despite your assurances to him that you were full), Jill then wipes the corner of your mouth with her thumb. Your holy attention is reverted back to Carlos when he pokes your lips with a straw, once again, ushering you to let him nourish your stomach. "To wash it down" he excuses, with far too much exhilaration hanging heavy in his tone.
Indulging in the cold, fresh water as it cascades down your throat, you miss how Jill brings her thumb, now adorned with bits of food and your saliva, into her mouth. And she just relishes in the absolute taste of you. Her vision goes hazy and her eyelids droop from the ecstasy. She would have let herself completely fall into the arms of enrapturing oblivion if it weren't for the fact you were right beside her. Carlos takes notice, however, and a sneer forms on his lips as he looks at her in disgust. Jill bites her tongue, holding herself back from pointing out how he is no different. So easily, she could inform you of how after your intimate bath together, she found him inhaling your sweater with his eyes rolled back into his skull and his hand stuffed into his pants. If she were to voice this, however, the man would easily throw himself over the table and attack her like a feral animal. She can handle him, but you don't need even more stress.
Upon being thrust into the middle of this mess, the only thing you can do is watch as the obsession of Jill and Carlos play out before your very eyes. And the physical manifestation of your return has caused disastrous consequences. Six years and you're ashamed to say you have forgotten what their facial features looked like. The memory remains as a blurred, distorted mess of blood and grime. An expression of all the trauma you all have endured. Now, however, you'd be damned if those were two expressions you could ever forget.
Carlos and his dark goo-goo eyes, adorned in overwhelming heaps of drowning devotion that could swallow you whole with one glance. They're affixed with teardrops, adding onto everything cherubic, holy about the way he looks at you. Despite the sheer display of sadness leaking from his eyes, his lips exhibit the biggest, most genuine smile you have ever seen in your life. The way he looks at you, it's almost as if God himself had descended from the heavens and graced Carlos with his presence. All from just the mere act of feeding you. It was deranged, you thought to yourself.
His smile vanishes, eyebrows raising as something seems to click in his head. He then takes your right arm gingerly into his grasp, fingers treading amongst the field of goosebumps blossoming on your skin. "Your arm, you poor thing... Are you okay, honey?" The worry in his voice makes you shiver with convulsion. It takes you several seconds to compute that he was referring to the injury you endured six whole years ago.
Jill and her cheeks that are blazon in hues reminiscent of two ripe cherries, appending a sort of childish innocence to her always-stoic expression. The way her eyebrows furrowed and eyes narrowed displayed a sense of fury — presumably toward the man clinging onto you like a lifeline. When she looks at you, however, her features perceptibly soften as if beams of sunlight had enveloped her after years of being in the depths of Winter. It was deranged, you thought to yourself.
"You... You kidnapped me..." Even through all the violence and torment these two have endured, nothing had cut deep than those three words. The waver in your voice, the emotions brimming in your eyes, the trembling frown plastered on your lips. God, it killed them right then and there.
They begin to ramble and deny your accusation. All as if it wasn't a lie coming out of their mouths. And in their heads, it was anything but a lie. They truly believed that they saved you as if it was a genuine fact. Somehow, they manage to inch closer to you. The empty air around you becomes suffused with their waving hands and panicked explanations. All to convince you that they would never hurt you. Never.
"You're upset, Y/N, we understand. But you have to know that this was for your own good!" Jill remains the voice of reason, if that's what you would name it. Meanwhile, Carlos throws shambles of assurances such as, "It's not true!" and "I need you!" your way, hoping that something, anything will mend your fears.
And poor you. So confused, so terrified, so bewildered. All you could want at this moment is to go back twelve hours ago. To leave with your friend the second they entered the room, to scrutinize what in your home had caused you to black out, to burst down the front door and beg the the surrounding security guards to save you. Even though the truth of your “home” simmers just beneath the surface, itching to claw its way out, you still find yourself aching to go back to the way things were. Even if it is all just a fat lie. Anything is better than this.
Miles upon miles away, the three of you are completely unaware of the fourth presence treading closer to their secret. Suspicions high, Tyrell can't help but use some of his free time to venture into why Jill and Carlos had suddenly vanished. For the umpteenth time, he looks through more footage from the security system Jill was so insistent on receiving. And what he finds is horrifying. The two people he had once considered his friends were seen climbing through a window, to where they escape moments later with an unconscious body.
A flare of guilt spreads through him. Unwillingly, he had actively played a part in this. Whoever you were, he felt inclined to take full responsibility for helping these two take this innocent life away. To be kidnapped, murdered, he doesn't know. What Tyrell does know, however, is that he feels to be partially blamed for this. When he does further research, his heart sinks even deeper into the pit of his stomach. Reports of a missing patient were sent around the establishment. Y/N L/N, a potential runaway was actually the body nestled tight in Carlos' arms. He remembers how he had spoken that name and the reaction it garnered from Carlos; he remembers seeing the name on the door of the room Jill relentlessly paid him to receive footage of.
With that, Tyrell reports the incident. An investigation commences and two major clues are found. A shattered mug that had been filled with sedation-induced tea and specks of blood on the bathroom floor that have been tested positive for matching one of the assailants. Now, a manhunt is in play for Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira.
At his desk that was overwhelmed with littering documents, Tyrell eavesdrops on a conversation between his two colleagues.
"You won't believe who they've gotten to take over Carlos' spot for this mission!"
"Who?"
"Leon Kennedy."

TikTok was where I learned about SHEIN. For a while my For You page, which had accurately identified my interest in fashion’s more material impacts, served me videos of sustainable fashion influencers decrying SHEIN’s wretched labor and environmental practices. The textile industry is the second-largest polluter in the world, they said, and of all the fast-fashion producers, SHEIN is by far the worst offender. SHEIN uses toxic chemicals in their clothing production; SHEIN mass-produces fabrics like spandex that never decompose (at this point an image would flash across the screen: an overflowing clothing landfill, or a mountain of discarded clothes in the Chilean desert so large it is visible from space); SHEIN exploits and endangers its factory workers. Employees earn $556 a month to make five hundred pieces of clothing every day, work eighteen-hour days, and use their lunch breaks to wash their hair — a schedule they repeat seven days per week with only one day off per month. A more nuanced TikToker might point out, briefly, that conditions in SHEIN factories are not necessarily unique, or that focusing on suppliers — rather than the larger systems of Western consumption and capitalism that create these conditions — is a fool’s errand, but the platform isn’t built for that kind of dialogue. I clicked on the comments and invariably read ones with several dozen likes saying, “I’m so willing to die in shein clothes.” Before long I was watching SHEIN hauls. There are millions of them — the tag #sheinhaul has been viewed a collective 14.2 billion times on TikTok. In each haul, a woman rips open a plastic bag filled with smaller plastic bags filled with small plastic clothing. Sometimes the woman holds up each garment and narrates its merits, but often the clothes are disembodied, laid flat on a floor or a bed in an accidental stop-motion animation. A stretchy red skirt on a furry white carpet is replaced by a strapless watercolor bustier with a deep-V neckline. A zebra-print skirt is followed by a matching pink two-piece set, with a short-sleeve cardigan and miniskirt constructed from a fabric that looks like bubble wrap. Sometimes a haul is five pieces, and sometimes it is too many pieces to count. The garments appear and disappear in seconds, edited to the beat of a trending song. Rarely do we see the clothing on a body. Usually brand familiarity accrues in a slow drip, building from obscurity to instant recognizability over the course of months or years as a designer’s work intersects with the zeitgeist and gains traction on social media. SHEIN was different. One day I’d never heard of the retailer and the next it was inescapable: in thousands of outfit videos, on millions of social media feeds. The clothes weren’t distinct or cohesive; what united them wasn’t style but price. All those SHEIN hauls entered my feeds with such ubiquity that they began to feel like they’d always been there. I’d opened a door to a new part of the fashion internet: a place where girls bragged about their ultra-fast-fashion purchases, delighting in the cheapness of the garments. Here, SHEIN was the obvious choice for new clothes. Why not, when you could buy on-trend pieces at lightning speed for less than the price of a cup of coffee? It was uncanny to bounce between videos: here was a girl showing off her new halter, here was another girl giving a litany of reasons why it was unconscionable to buy clothes for so little money. Didn’t these TikTokers hear one another? But then again, how could they? “This is what we keep missing here in the whole conversation about sustainability in the industry,” Nick Anguelov, a professor of public policy from UMass Dartmouth, said to a Slate journalist writing about SHEIN in June. “We keep failing to understand that our customers are kids and they don’t give a fuck.”

hey. hey. i cannot make any inroads on your ethics but hey. hey listen. if you nod along with posts like this one

look into how this stuff is processed sometime 👍
i mean, full disclosure: i do genuinely think “i love animal products ❤️ they’re biodegradable” is kind of antivegan cope because, you know, no one ever seems to be talking about natural plant fibers versus synthetics in these contexts— despite the fact that, on average, they comprise significantly more of your wardrobe and significantly more of your short-term, short-life garments— but also, and more importantly: i do not know what kind of beautiful little production chain is being imagined here, but the idea that you go from sheep or cow or so on to your wardrobe to the compost heap to fresh soil in 5-15 years, zero environmental impact, is really out of touch with most factors of consumption. leather for example can be biodegradable, but a lot of processed leather takes significantly longer to decompose— not as long as pvc, but longer than you use it for— due to the nature of its treatment. if you buy leather goods you are virtually never buying untreated leather; tanning is a chemical process with pretty significant environmental consequences. if you are getting for example a wool coat, the odds that you can afford a 100% wool coat as opposed to a wool-synthetic blend are pretty low; same with sweaters. so maybe you thrift a leather jacket or a vintage 100% wool sweater and get some use out of it. you buy a pair of leather shoes and feel good about it. hey, their treatment and soles probably biodegrade too right? and without any lasting impacts on the environment? and maybe you overcorrect for “vegan item!!” fast fashion greenwashing and end up with items which are pretty much exactly as non-biodegradable as their plastic equivalents, and exactly as short-lived because the quality of low-budget manufacturing these days seems to be constantly getting worse.
i don’t mean to scaremonger or whatever— there really isn’t much of a way out of this unless you have some serious cash to spend. but the idea of a totemic Ecologically Good category of material is obviously out of touch with how most people in the world get their clothes and loudly praising a product which is not actually in practice guaranteed to be better than its plastic substitute is oddly common on this website. cmon there isn’t even a character limit. there’s space to actually say something useful
#i think there are a lot of posts on here that are like#finally! i can think [categorical thing]! it is an unalloyed good!#and it is like oh god but the subcategories

ok hiiiii im back i have soo many questions. bc I am Looking at the every dead person gets reanimated thing 👀
if someone dies, can they get reanimated in their own body/possess themselves? just like missing their own free will ig? or is it more of a truly mindless-zombie type of situation?
and since the body still reanimates if it's chopped up, is it like. one divided consciousness? can a zombie guy carry around their own severed head like a macabre fashion accessory.
is there a special way to bury the dead that prevents this or stops them from shambling around?
how does the society of this world like. work around that? bc thats craaazy to have to live with and KNOW is going to happen to u and everyone u care about.
bonus to that how do ppl in this world feel about it? is this like. a horrifying eventuality or is it just like kinda normalized for them?
that was like one million questions sorry I am just. soooo intrigued rn loll
hiiiiiii thank you for asking I could talk about this all day
Nope! It's actually one powerful entity that possesses all of them. Kind of like a hivemind situation. (Except said entity's mind is mostly imprisoned so they are operating mostly on instinct)
Yes! Because of the hivemind thing, not only can separated body parts from the same body work together, but any number of intact bodies or parts from different bodies can work together (If you have multiple left alone for long enough they might uh. merge...)
You have to cremate them or otherwise completely destroy the body/significantly alter the material for the effect not to take hold. Also fun fact possessed bodies do not decompose :) And basically become invulnerable the longer they are possessed. Luckily we have magical Divine Light weapons that can hurt them, though!
It is crazy! Typically they will have infrastructure set up to make it fairly easy to cremate a body as soon as possible, so in a well-functioning city, you won't have that many issues with it. Obviously you still get problems if someone dies alone/in their sleep/unaccounted for. Culturally it's encouraged to try and have people die in a hospital or something similar because they have a system for that. And luckily the empire employs a task force whose number one job is basically zombie exterminator (but their role has expanded to other sorts of cop stuff. also a significant thing keeping the empire together since that's run centrally). People are also incentivized to live in tighter communities, since if you're off in the wilderness, you can get Got by all they other guys who have died in the wilderness over the years. Another a side effect of all this is that it's easier to get away with murder since it's not particularly suspicious to just...get rid of a body. Another thing it affects is their medicine, since things like dissection are Not Done for practical reasons, as you can imagine.
It is fairly normalized (They don't have cultural memory of a time when this didn't happen, so it's just like the way the world works). It is a horrifying eventuality but in the same way regular old death/disease is for us. There are a lot of cultural implications obviously so like for example they don't have any concept of honor/desecration of dead bodies. once they die you have no reason to respect the body as an object. time to destroy it as fast as possible. you know your loved one isn't in there any more because very shortly Something Else is going to be. It also affects stuff iconographically in the sense that you would never see human skull imagery, for example. People don't have a baseline shorthand idea for what a human skull looks like. Something else interesting is that it cements the human/animal divide in their world concept, because it only happens to humans, so "human is a type of animal" is not really a way of thinking.
#asks#second chance wip#going to stop rambling before I get too long-winded but it affects so much!#like this is the thing their whole society religion culture government etc. is based on to some degree and asdfghjkl;lkjhghjkl#and I'm sure there are so many other things it would affect that I haven't even thought of yet#like what if humanity had been living in the zombie apocalypse for 5000 years and just thought it was normal#makes me insane!!!#let me just add that all of this is pre-apocalypse in my timeline >:)

Could Eye Strain Mikey wear gloves? Would that work?
I have an answer to this!!
Okay so Mikeys power has different levels of effectiveness depending on the material! when hes really focusing on using his powers then the difference isnt all that noticeable, but when hes not actively using them the affects can still apear. And this can change with his emotions.
So organic stuff rots/decomposes fastest, which includes foods, living things and fabrics
so any gloves Mikey gets, unless he focuses on not destroying them and also doesn't get emotional while wearing them, will start to wear away very quickly (is not as fast as living material would tho)
metal works much better tho, Mikeys ambient power barely effects it, and Donnie once made Mikey some ring-like finger caps that did kinda work, but werent very effective (it only blocked his fingers so when he grabbed something with his full hand/palm his powers would still have an effect) and Mikey hated them cause they were so uncomfortable.
Donnies still working on an alternative solution.

CLASSIFIED EXPEDITION REPORT W6: THE FASHION GRAVEYARD - FAST AND SLOW IN THE FASHION & GREENWASHING
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CODE ID: LKIM090325 SURVIVAL LEVEL: S+ URBAN FOLKLORE: ---------------------------------------------------- There’s a whisper among the night travelers: if you step off the bus at midnight, you’ll glimpse a red jacket hanging in the station’s closet. DO NOT TOUCH IT. One touch, and you’ll get transported to the Atacama desert. A place known as THE FASHION GRAVEYARD. MAYDAY. Inc deployed five Operators to investigate, but the mission yielded minimal results. The jacket’s mass-produced design, churned out by fast fashion brands in the millions, makes it nearly impossible to trace its origin.
Operator ████: “How do you find the original when the copies never end?”
KEY INSIGHT: ----------------------------------------------------
Fast fashion fuels overconsumption, environmental harm and labor exploitation, while slow fashion advocates for sustainability and ethical production (Geiger & Keller, 2018). Microcelebrities on social media shape beauty and shopping trends, often promoting disposable fashion. However, digital activism empowers consumers to demand transparency, fair labor, and sustainability (Domingos et al., 2022). Movements like #WhoMadeMyClothes holds brands accountable, pushing the fashion industry toward ethical and environmentally responsible practices (Mark, 2018).
EXPEDITION REPORT: ----------------------------------------------------
Click. Scroll. Buy. Regret. Repeat. The fast fashion industry is responsible for some of the worst environmental destruction on the planet (Rabolt & Miller, 2018). The Atacama Desert, once known for its vast, uninhabited beauty, has become the burial ground for the world’s discarded fashion with over 90 million tons of textile waste spanning 300 hectares (Bartlett & Merino, 2024). The phenomenon has created so much waste that the UN calls it “an environmental and social emergency.” In 2023, researchers mapped 100 clothing disposal areas, revealing 50 sites with fires, 16 with direct discards, and 34 with mixed textile and plastic waste (Carvalho, 2023).
Operator ████: "I touched the jacket. The next thing I knew, I was knee-deep in discarded clothes, stretching beyond the horizon. The ground wasn’t sand. It was synthetic fabric, decomposing into dust." But the real horror isn’t just in landfills. It’s in the cycle itself, in the way fast fashion warps human consumption, fashion is no longer just about clothing. For decades, sociologists have studied fashion as a form of social capital (Veblen, 1899), a means of signaling identity, wealth and status. Platforms like TikTok and Instagram reward newness, ensuring that a trend peaks and dies in weeks, pushing consumers into an endless cycle of consumption (Finjan, 2024).
Operator ████: “I followed an influencer for two weeks. Every video, new outfits, new haul, new unboxing. I checked her resale account. The red jacket was up for sale last week. She didn’t even wear most of it.” Greenwashing is not an accident of marketing but a carefully constructed corporate strategy designed to mislead consumers while keeping the machinery of fast fashion running at full speed (Bick et al., 2018). H&M’s Conscious Collection and Zara’s Join Life line are prime example collections marketed as eco-friendly while the companies behind them continue to mass-produce clothing at an unsustainable scale (Finjan, 2024). Despite their claims, only a fraction of the materials used in these lines are actually recyclable; the rest still contribute to the growing waste problem (Brewer, 2019).
The industry presents it as a breakthrough in sustainable fashion, yet in reality, it merely extends the lifespan of plastic pollution under the guise of progress. Polyester made from recycled plastics still sheds microplastics with every wash, contaminating waterways and creating long-term pollution (Finjan, 2024). Some brands go as far as inventing their own sustainability certifications, presenting logos and labels that give the impression of strict environmental standards when, in reality, they are nothing more than marketing tools (Szabo & Webster, 2021). Operator ████: "We found clothes with tags still attached. Some had shipping labels and sustainability certificates that blurred. What were they meant for?"
Slow fashion was introduced as an antidote to the harms of fast fashion, emphasizing ethical labor, mindful consumption and sustainability. However, as the movement gained popularity, it was co-opted by capitalism, turning ethical fashion into a luxury rather than an accessible solution (Finjan, 2024). Many sustainable brands price their products so high that only wealthy consumers can afford them, creating an exclusivity barrier that contradicts the movement’s original intent (Jung & Jin, 2014). The concept of the "investment piece" , a timeless, high-quality item meant to replace fast fashion has become a marketing strategy, subtly encouraging consumers to keep buying (ibid). Another issue lies within the rise of slow fashion influencers, who, despite promoting sustainability, subtly reinforcing the idea that sustainable fashion still requires constant renewal, even if at a slower pace. This contradicts the core principle of reducing consumption altogether.
Operator ████: "We thought we were investigating a dumping ground. But this wasn’t a graveyard. It was a factory. A place where old trends rot and something new is born."
The horrors of this graveyard are not just environmental but social. The dumping sites have inadvertently created an informal economy, where impoverished communities scavenge through the textile mountains to resell what they can (Carvalho, 2023). Many of these individuals, including migrants from Venezuela and Bolivia, rely on the waste for survival, collecting and reselling clothes before authorities cover the sites with sand to obscure the scale of illegal dumping (Guardian News and Media, 2023). The situation is exacerbated by frequent fires, as discarded clothes are incinerated in attempts to erase evidence, releasing toxic fumes that seep into the air and soil (ibid). These burning garments, often laced with synthetic dyes and plastic-based fibers, pose serious health risks not only to those who live nearby but also to the broader ecosystem, as pollutants infiltrate underground water sources (ibid).
Many activists are raising awareness against this current issue. Maya Ramos, a stylist and visual artist from the state of São Paulo in Brazil teamed up with Fashion Revolution Brazil and Artplan to put on “Atacama Fashion Week” amid the rubbish to raise awareness of the reality she lives with and to illustrate what can be made out of the waste (Guardian News and Media, 2023). Models are dressed from burnt fabric scavenged from the smoldering remains of incinerated fast fashion pieces. The collection was themed around the four elements earth, fire, air, and water, each piece representing the devastation fashion waste has inflicted on the planet (ibid).
The Atacama serves as a stark warning: fast fashion does not disappear when we discard it. It simply moves to the margins of the world, where it festers, burns and poisons. As consumers, the illusion of guilt-free consumption, buying yet another “sustainable” collection, donating to an overflowing charity bin—only fuels the cycle. The question remains: when the desert is full, where will the next graveyard be?

Impact of Wastage of Clothing on The Environment - Swati Sharma, Dr. Arpana Kamboj
The wastage of clothing has now turned into an international issue because thousands of tones are wasted annually that causes critical environmental damage. Two authors Swati Sharma and Dr. Arpana Kamboj published the book in their name under Anu Books on this burning topic.
How Clothing Waste Damages the Environment?
It is the most polluting industry. Many people's clothes are made of synthetic fibers like polyester, which take hundreds of years to decompose. Old clothes they do not find useful end up in landfills, contributing negative chemicals to the soil and water.
The production of new clothes through mass production wastes a lot of natural resources. For example, it requires 2,700 liters of water to produce just one cotton shirt, enough water for a single person to drink for over two years! Just like this, textile factories add toxic dyes and chemicals to rivers, making water bodies and marine life deteriorate.

Fast Fashion and Overconsumption
The leading cause of clothing waste is fast fashion. Many brands make clothes at very low prices and fashion that's worn a few times and then discarded. It creates over-waste and pollution. In this book, Swati Sharma and Dr. Arpana Kamboj talked about how fast fashion causes carbon emissions and wastes valued resources.
Ways to Reduce Clothing Waste
There are a few simple ways to reduce clothing waste and protect the environment.
Reuse and Donate: Do not waste your old clothes, but donate them to people who need them.
Recycle Fabrics: Nowadays, most companies recycle old clothes to create new products.
Buy Sustainable Fashion: Buy from those brands that have eco-friendly features, organic, and recycled materials.
Repair and Upcycle: Mend torn clothes or redesign them into new styles.
Following these steps, we will significantly reduce the wastage of clothes and help achieve a sustainable future. The book by Swati Sharma and Dr. Arpana Kamboj, which was published under the banner of Anu Books, is a very informative document on how one can contribute in reducing textile wastes.

Pinuno o Basura?
The 2025 country election is fast approaching, and we often see various political paraphernalia and posters around the streets. Has it even crossed our minds what the purpose of these materials is beyond simply promoting or campaigning for politicians? It is undeniable that this material has been effective in informing us about potential leaders, according to the article of Minda News, mounting amid the election season as national and local candidates in the May 2022 elections invest heavily in non-biodegradable campaign materials like banners and tarpaulins, a Davao City-based environmental group said. However, it also carries a negative impact for bigger reasons. An article by Inquirer also prove that “There is no denying the excessive use of these materials can clutter the streets, creating an unattractive and chaotic environment. By advocating for clean and orderly streets, we can ensure a visually appealing and serene atmosphere that allows citizens to focus more on discharging their civic duty to vote.”
Looking at the broader perspective, right after the election, some politicians promptly remove their tarpaulins. However, it is undeniable that some leave their tarpaulins hanging, resulting in an unsightly appearance in our environment. Additionally, as long as these materials remain, there is a chance they may eventually become waste, and studies show that tarpaulin materials are not easily decomposed. According to, Recycle Nation “it takes longer for plastics to decompose than something like a paper towel or slice of bread.” This can harm the environment, reflecting a practice that is neither sustainable nor healthy.
Although our leaders are the hope of tomorrow, it is essential that they are held accountable and remain mindful of the impact of their actions after the election. There are numerous ways to approach this sustainably, rather than leaving these materials to hang until the next election. For instance, some tricycle and jeepney drivers could utilize these tarpaulins, allowing them to be repurposed and reducing waste.
This coming election let us not just vote but also be sustainable for the future.

The Thesmophoria, a women’s festival honoring Demeter and Persephone, was held in Athens on 11-13 Pyanepsion (October 13-15 in 2024). Each of the three days of the festival had its own name: “Going Up,” “Fasting,” and “Fair Birth.” The first, “Going Up,” referred to the women’s journey to the temple of Demeter Thesmophoros (Parker, Polytheism 272); on the second, “Fasting,” they sat on the ground and fasted (274); the last day, Kalligeneia or “Fair Offspring,” may have involved giving thanks for fertility, either their own or of the earth. The details of the rites were kept secret. (Parke 88), but the festival was said to have involved insults and obscenities among women, and the eating of cakes in the shapes of phalluses and vulvas. (Stallsmith 3) The Thesmophoria was also the occasion of gathering decaying or decomposed materials previously deposited into the earth—pine shoots, cakes and the bodies of piglets—to be used in the fertilizing of crops. Comprehensive Guide to Soil Improvement for Gardening
Soil improvement, also known as soil amendment or soil conditioning, is an essential practice for gardeners seeking to cultivate healthy, productive plants. This process involves enhancing the physical and chemical properties of soil to create an optimal growing environment. Good soil is the foundation of a thriving garden, as it provides plants with the necessary nutrients, water, and structure to grow vigorously. This article delves into the importance of soil improvement, the various methods available, and practical steps to enhance your garden soil.
Why Soil Improvement is Crucial The quality of soil directly influences the health and productivity of plants. Poor soil conditions can lead to weak growth, nutrient deficiencies, and increased susceptibility to pests and diseases. Conversely, well-improved soil can significantly boost plant health and yield. Here are the primary benefits of soil improvement:
Enhanced Nutrient Availability: Soil amendments increase the availability of essential nutrients needed for plant growth.
Better Soil Structure: Improved soil texture aids in root penetration, air circulation, and water retention.
Increased Water Retention: Amended soil can hold moisture more effectively, reducing the need for frequent watering.
Improved Drainage: Good soil structure prevents waterlogging and root rot, ensuring proper aeration.
Enhanced Microbial Activity: Healthy soil supports beneficial microorganisms that aid in nutrient cycling and plant health.
Key Methods of Soil Improvement Adding Organic Matter
Compost: Incorporating compost into your soil enriches it with organic matter, improving structure and providing essential nutrients. Compost is made from decomposed plant materials and kitchen scraps, making it a sustainable option for soil enhancement.
Mulching: Applying a layer of organic mulch, such as straw, wood chips, or leaves, on the soil surface helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and eventually decomposes to add organic matter to the soil.
Manure: Well-rotted animal manure adds nutrients and organic matter, enhancing soil fertility and structure. Manure should be properly composted to avoid introducing pathogens or weed seeds. Adjusting Soil pH
Lime: Used to raise the pH of acidic soils, making them more alkaline and improving nutrient availability. Lime should be applied according to soil test recommendations.
Sulfur: Applied to lower the pH of alkaline soils, making them more acidic and suitable for acid-loving plants. Sulfur should also be used based on soil test results.
Nutrient Enhancement
Organic Fertilizers: Products like bone meal, blood meal, and fish emulsion provide slow-release nutrients and improve soil health. These fertilizers are derived from natural sources and decompose slowly, providing a steady supply of nutrients.
Inorganic Fertilizers: These are concentrated sources of specific nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium (NPK), essential for plant growth. Inorganic fertilizers are fast-acting and can quickly correct nutrient deficiencies.
Micronutrients: Adding trace elements such as iron, manganese, and zinc can correct deficiencies and promote plant health. Micronutrients are essential for various physiological functions in plants, even though they are required in small amounts. Improving Soil Structure
Aeration: Techniques like tilling, spading, or using a garden fork to break up compacted soil enhance air and water movement. Aeration prevents soil compaction and promotes root growth.
Amendments: Materials such as sand, perlite, or vermiculite can be added to improve drainage in heavy clay soils or increase water retention in sandy soils. These amendments modify soil texture, making it more suitable for plant growth. Using Cover Crops
Green Manure: Planting cover crops like clover, alfalfa, or rye can improve soil structure, add organic matter, and increase nitrogen content when tilled into the soil. Cover crops also help prevent soil erosion and suppress weeds.
Practical Steps for Effective Soil Improvement
Conduct a Soil Test: Start with a soil test to determine the pH, nutrient levels, and texture of your soil. This information will guide your amendment choices. Soil tests can be done through local cooperative extension services or private laboratories.
Choose the Right Amendments: Based on the soil test results, select appropriate amendments to address deficiencies and improve soil structure. Organic matter, lime, sulfur, and specific fertilizers should be chosen according to the needs of your soil and plants.
Apply Organic Matter Regularly: Regularly add compost and mulch to maintain soil health and fertility. Organic matter improves soil structure, enhances nutrient content, and supports beneficial soil organisms.
Adjust Soil pH as Needed: Use lime or sulfur to correct pH imbalances, ensuring optimal nutrient availability for your plants. Proper pH ensures that plants can absorb the nutrients they need from the soil.
Fertilize Appropriately: Follow recommendations for fertilizing, considering both macro- and micronutrients. Avoid over-application, which can harm plants and the environment. Slow-release fertilizers are often preferable as they provide a steady supply of nutrients.
Improve Soil Structure: Use mechanical aeration and add structural amendments to enhance soil texture and drainage. Regularly turning the soil and adding coarse materials like sand or perlite can prevent compaction and improve root growth.
Plant Cover Crops: Incorporate cover crops into your gardening routine to naturally improve soil health and fertility. Cover crops also help manage weeds, reduce erosion, and enhance soil organic matter.
Regular Monitoring and Maintenance: Continuously monitor soil conditions and plant health. Make adjustments as needed to maintain optimal soil quality. Regular soil testing can help track changes and guide future amendments.

“The bottom line is you got a lot of emissions coming from wood harvest, and we don’t pay attention to that,” said Tim Searchinger, senior fellow and technical director for agriculture, forestry, and ecosystems at the World Resources Institute and a co-author of the paper. The emissions associated with timber harvests mainly come from burning logs and pellets for fuel and from rotting branches, leaves, and roots left in the forest or tossed in landfills, where they decompose and release carbon into the air.
[...]
Searchinger argues that researchers and policymakers haven’t accurately estimated the climate cost of wood use in part because they’ve counted carbon-capturing forest growth as an “offset” — as if new trees compensated for the missing ones — even when that growth would happen naturally. When trees are in the ground, especially when they’re young and growing fast, they absorb carbon. Many of the forests in the Northern Hemisphere were cleared in past centuries and are now regrowing and accumulating carbon on their own, whether or not they’ve been logged recently. Even for older forests that aren’t regrowing as quickly, “you’d be better off” leaving them unharvested, said Houghton, noting that we’ve got a “long way to go” before our use of wood is efficient enough — say, by not burning so much of it — that the emissions from logging could be fully offset by forest regrowth. Still, Searchinger said there’s a silver lining to the study. His team’s findings don’t mean that more carbon dioxide is getting into the atmosphere than scientists had thought, just that some of those emissions are coming from an activity that hadn’t been accounted for.

And still I see no changes...
Late-stage capitalism depends on women producing the next generation of laborers whether they want to or not...

Corporate greed -- as evidenced by fast fashion like SHEIN, Fashion Nova, Romwe, Forever 21, the film industry with the continued strike aimed to replace all but the biggest stars and virtually all background and supporting actors despite the unions totally reasonable demands for a living wage & AI protections so that their image & likeness cant be scanned & used in perpetuity by studios with their forced consent in exchange for being cast in the production, fast food companies like McDonalds continuing with deforestation practices & the destruction of rainforests & ecosystems, all of the environmental waste produced by Amazon warehouses, chemical & environmental pollution by Fortune 500 companies in the constant pursuit of ever more profit, overextracting natural resources from the planet and raping the earth, the extinction of tens of thousands of unique species with the non-stop intent of further expansion, further development, further cutting down of trees, razing of forests, landfills at total capacity with overflow killing wildlife in the oceans with a majority of waste taking thousands of years to decompose, a finite resource -- Mother Earth -- endlessly pillaged & raped by big pharma, big agriculture, big chemical manufacturing companies, big box retail like Amazon & Walmart, fast fashion like SHEIN & Forever 21, admitted alien existence by former CIA director which also includes not yet admitted to government experimentation with alien technology & weaponry that led to a bomb cloud many reported seeing in NYC that happened the same exact day as the "Canadian wildfire smoke" filling the skies of the east coast, yet all the videos on social media were of the smoke, none were of the fires, and reports that claimed 100 wildfires started simultaneously in Canada made no sense -- the alien bomb testing led to record toxicity levels in the air and non-stop unprecedented extreme humidity that has not relented since the "wildfire smoke" aka the testing of the alien bomb in NYC -- yet the worlds elite in industry (Elons, Bezos, etc) & the actual power brokers in politics behind the scenes of the political figureheads that are all selected ahead of time, every election is fake & the outcome is predetermined, all US presidents share royal lineage dating back to British kings, they are all reptilians picked ahead of time by the kingmakers as charismatic frontmen that are then controlled behind the scenes & told what to do, all politicians get along with each other behind the scenes, the 2 party system is a complete sham, its heel vs face in wrestling -- its all a cheap gimmick to divide the audience and to keep the money flowing in via donations over "hot button" issues that are red meat to their respective partys bases but there are always predictable, planned & scripted mostly incremental changes that shift back and forth with very few actual "watershed" moments by design so that both parties can constantly fundraise over whatever the contrived forced issue is of the day with no true actual change, its why Obama deported more undocumented immigrants than Trump, there is no actual "red vs blue", nor actual material difference between the two main parties, its why theres never any true substantive change regardless of who is in power, and a true changemaker and revolutionary like Cornel West never even gets heard from.

If its a "democracy", why are Cornel West, Dr. Jill Stein, the Green Party, the Libertarian Party, the Communist Party of the USA, the Socialist Party -- why arent they allowed to be on the Presidential debate stage unless a totally fake & arbitrary threshold of votes is reached -- because they dont want the American public on a mainstream stage to actually hear cogent and cohesive and compelling and persuasive and intelligent arguments for the abolition of the police, Supreme Court, military, prison system, free college education, universal healthcare, workers uniting & pooling their incomes & distributing them evenly amongst themselves aka true socialism so they can stop being exploited by their corporate overlords slaving away at their salaried jobs many without overtime once they are in a "leadership" position working thousands of hours for free.
True reproductive justice & freedom with a realization that women are dehumanized & tyrannized by the "motherhood is martyrdom" societal mandate that demands that women sacrifice & sublimate their entire identities on the altar of being a "selfless mother" and giving women control over their bodily autonomy, reproductive choices, careers, sexual health, incomes, mental & physical health, physical appearance and control over their lives as anti-abortion legislation takes all of this agency away and demands that a pregnant woman become a mindless husk & soulless incubator ready to reproduce via forced birth endless bodies for the corporate capitalist machine & system, thats all "pro-life" is, its reducing women to their occupied uteruses and forcing them to birth more bodies in service of late stage capitalism.
Why dont we have funerals as a society for miscarried and aborted fetuses? because we intrinsically know as a society that an unborn fetus doesnt have a fully developed consciousness, personality, soul expression, thoughts, emotions, experiences, philosophies -- it is fetal tissue, it is not a sentient, thinking, emoting human being but the woman gestating it is -- so why is the woman reduced to nothing but a gestational carrier and why is the fetus elevated to mattering more than the woman carrying it, when thousands of toddlers are waiting to be adopted in the foster system, when children born to women who didnt want them who then express the trauma of enduring forced birth as neglect, abuse & physical abandonment -- how is any of that "pro-life"?
When states that have anti-abortion laws have significantly higher poverty & crime rates, how is that "pro-life"? Whats "pro-life" about punishing women who dont want to be mothers and forcing them to give birth?
Condoms break, people forget to take birth control, guys refuse to wear condoms because they want to "feel everything" or they "dont like them", women are socialized to be docile & polite and are socially conditioned to struggle to say "no" to men especially in intimate encounters, women are groomed & socially engineered to be pleasing and agreeable towards men even in sexual situations when they shouldnt be -- smile, look pretty, be attractive, be quiet, be sexy and hope he likes you and wants to be with you, that is the social messaging in pop culture movies, media, music, books -- the man leads, the woman coquettishly follows -- where is the confident, emphatic, full-chested "no" in that when women are trained above all else to be liked? This leads to a lot of unwanted sex, regrettable sex, unenjoyable sex, forced sex, "I would rather go home but I dont want to be rude" sex, "He said he didnt want a blow job, I guess I have to fuck him" sex, spousal rape, date rape, acquaintance rape, "He said its too late to change my mind now" rape, drunken rape, high rape, "I just wanted him to like me" rape "I wanted to do stuff but not sex" rape -- why should women be forced to give birth in any of these situations?

Why should women be forced to give birth at all?
If men gave birth, not women -- do you really think there would be anti-abortion legislation?
Prescription medication making birth control ineffective happens, not taking Plan B in time for it to work happens, people drink & use psychedlics, hormone rushes happen, abuse happens, coercion happens, pressure happens, rape happens, assault happens, molestation happens, incest happens, depression happens, suicidal ideation happens, mentors, coaches, teachers, professors & youth leaders abusing & exploiting their authority via sexual force & assaults happens, autoimmune disease diagnoses happen, layoffs happen, reduction in force happens, firing happens, unemployment happens, houseleness happens, evictions happens, car & furniture reposessions happen, infidelities happen, breakups happen, STIs happen, heartbreak happens, malignant narcissists and dark empaths as toxic & abusive partners happen.
The feminization of poverty already ensures that women are overrepresented in low wage jobs & service industries while being underpaid vs men in white collar corporate jobs while also taking years off from their careers to raise their children and care for aging parents while men do not typically take more than a week or two off when children are born so women work less years in their careers than men for less pay and are overrepresented in low wage jobs yet this society wants to layer forced births on top of all of this already existing gender inequality.
Giving a newborn baby up for adoption after carrying it for 9+ months and birthing it is often traumatic -- it is up to the woman if she wants to endure that experience, it should never be forced on her, paid maternity leave and universal childcare are unavailable so a woman who gives birth is forced to take 60% pay on either a short or long term disability leave (losing almost half of her income), use up her PTO vacation and sick days for the year or, since women are so overrepresented in low wage jobs, if they are in the retail & food service industries or if they are temporary employees in corporate positions they have no benefits and no paid time off so she is forced to take an unpaid leave which she cannot afford with how minimal her salary already is and then once the forced birth happens, daycare is $1k+ a month, more than rent in many places, not all states have daycares that are operated out of individuals homes for cheaper rates and everyone does not have parents that can watch their newborns but now if she goes back to work, daycare may be more than her rent and not leave her with any money to survive -- who thinks about these women?
There are untold circumstances and reasons why a woman can experience an unplanned & unwanted pregnancy and want to terminate, some women may be antinatalist like me and believe that it is an immoral and philosophical wrong to reproduce and to continue the immeasurable & irrevocable damage and harm humanity has done to Earth, its ecosystems, natural resources, rainforests, oceans, wildlife, ozone layer, climate and believe it is wrong to contribute to our current & continuing overpopulation -- no sentient, thinking, feeling human being should be forced to birth a non-sentient fetus for any reason -- we already have global overpopulation, why would we as a society add to our overpopulation human beings that are not wanted by their expectant mothers by force?
How can any good come out of coercion, control, forced birth and trauma?
What kind of social, emotional, mental and psychological harm do we do as a society to these women who, for a plethora of reasons, want to terminate their pregnancies and then certain states say no, youre not allowed to, you have to birth this unborn fetus.

The planet is not a resource that is infinitely renewable. We as humans, due to endless corporate greed, pursuit of profits and endless expansion, a blind unthinking need for more more more, are already trying to colonize Mars via Elon Musk -- isnt the destruction of one planet enough?
We are literally the Borg.
Go look up how many tens of thousands of species are already permanently extinct, how many elephants have been killed for the ivory trade, how many Amazon rainforests have been razed so McDonalds can raise and slaughter more cows for their Big Macs, how many landfills are filled with Amazon waste -- why do we need delivery in an hour?
How much food do we waste, do we throw away unused from our refrigerators, do we throw away uneaten in restaurants while children are food insecure and hungry and millions starve to death?
How much waste, how much misplaced hate, how much injustice, how many wars, how much corporate greed, how much control, how many genocides, how many natural disasters, how many more degrees can global temperatures rise, how much air pollution, how many synthetic chemicals and drugs and artificial preservatives, how many medications to make us sick and kill us, how many fake political movements, how many Proud Boys, how many Dont Tread on Mes, how many Make America Great Agains -- America was never great, how many victors rewriting history, how much propaganda, how much fake news, how much exploitation, how many overcrowded prisons with inhumane conditions without heat in the winter, AC in the summer & insect infestations yet you want to sit there and tweet about Trumps mugshot...

How many unarmed black men have to die at the hands of white cops, how many Amadou Diallous, how many Rodney Kings, how many Trayveon Martins, how many black while eating a bag of skittles, how many George Floyds, how many Ahmad Arberys, how many Philando Castilles, how many January 6th insurrections, how many overnight deaths in prisons, how many Sandra Blands because they stopped at a red light, how many Breonna Taylors for the crime of being asleep in their own beds, how many hands up dont shoot, how many I dont want to die, how many I dont have a gun Im just removing my license Officer, how many I thought it was a gun not a wallet, how many put your hands on the steering wheel before I blow your fucking head off, how many unreported crimes, how many unsolved murders, how many botched cases, how many its just another dead black man who gives a fuck, how many unredacted body wearing camera footage -- I thought the body wearing camera was supposed to bring transparency, why are you blurring the footage out, how many racist pigs, how many hooded klansmen hiding behind a badge a shield and a gun, to protect defend serve and kill as many innocent black people as possible, no need for an autopsy no need for an investigation its just another dead black man.

The only good nigger is a dead nigger so dont make me pull my cop trigger
Rat-tat tat tat tat, thats the way it is

And still I see no changes, all I see is racist faces, misplaced hate makes disgrace to races
We under, I wonder what it takes to make this one better place, lets erase the wasted
It aint a secret, dont conceal the fact, the penitentiarys packed and its filled with blacks
And still I see no changes, can't a brother get a little peace?
There's war in the streets and war in the Middle East
Instead of war on poverty, they got a war on drugs so the police can bother me
Don't let 'em jack you up, back you up
Crack you up and pimps smack you up
You gotta learn to hold ya own
They get jealous when they see ya with ya mobile phone
But tell the cops, they can't touch this
I don't trust this, when they try to rush, I bust this

🧿how many, how much until we say, enough is enough? 🧿

Pop Bright’s Bamboo Toothbrush offers a stylish, effective, and planet-friendly alternative to single-use plastic brushes. Crafted from organically grown, sustainably harvested bamboo and fitted with soft charcoal-infused nylon bristles, this toothbrush not only delivers a gentle yet thorough clean but also reduces your carbon footprint with each brushing session.
Premium Materials & Design At the heart of our eco-friendly Bamboo Toothbrush is a handle made from Moso bamboo—renowned for its fast growth, natural antimicrobial properties, and zero-deforestation harvesting. The smooth, ergonomic handle fits comfortably in your hand, making every brushing ritual a pleasure. Its naturally moisture-resistant surface means it won’t warp or splinter, ensuring long-lasting durability. The bristle head features dentist-recommended soft charcoal-infused nylon, which helps remove surface stains and bacteria, contributing to a noticeably brighter smile.
Superior Oral Care Performance Don’t let “eco-friendly” fool you into thinking “compromised performance.” Our eco-friendly Bamboo Toothbrush combines sustainability with optimal dental hygiene: Gentle Yet Effective Cleaning: Soft charcoal bristles glide across tooth surfaces, reaching tight spaces between teeth and along the gumline without causing abrasion.
Natural Whitening Action: Charcoal’s micro-abrasive properties lift stains from coffee, tea, and red wine, promoting a whiter smile over time.
Antibacterial Benefits: Bamboo’s innate antibacterial characteristics help inhibit mold or bacterial growth on the handle, keeping your brush fresher between uses.
Environmental Impact & Zero-Waste Lifestyle Every year, millions of plastic toothbrushes end up in landfills and oceans, taking centuries to decompose. By choosing an eco-friendly Bamboo Toothbrush, you’re part of the solution:
Biodegradable Handle: Once your toothbrush has reached the end of its usable life (we recommend replacing every three months), simply remove the bristles (they pop out easily) and compost or repurpose the bamboo handle.
Minimal Packaging: Pop Bright ships its brushes in fully recyclable, plastic-free boxes printed with vegetable-based inks, aligning with a zero-waste ethos.
Sustainable Harvesting: Moso bamboo grows to maturity within 3–5 years—far quicker than hardwood trees—without the need for pesticides or fertilizers. This renewable resource allows
for responsible forestry practices. Why Pop Bright’s Bamboo Toothbrush Stands Out
While many bamboo toothbrushes populate the market, Pop Bright’s offering distinguishes itself through attention to detail and quality control:
Premium Bamboo Quality: Only the highest-grade bamboo stalks, free from chemical treatments, are selected and kiln-dried to prevent cracking. Charcoal-Enhanced Bristles: Unlike standard nylon brushes, our bristles are infused with activated charcoal for enhanced stain removal and odor neutralization. Rigorous Testing: Each batch undergoes stringent quality checks to ensure consistent bristle strength, handle integrity, and sanitation standards. Ethical Manufacturing: All production facilities adhere to fair-trade practices, providing safe working conditions and fair wages.
How to Use & Maintain Your Bamboo Toothbrush Maximize the lifespan of your eco-friendly Bamboo Toothbrush with simple care steps:
Rinse & Dry: After brushing, rinse the bristles thoroughly under warm water and shake off excess moisture. Store upright in a well-ventilated holder—avoid enclosed cups that trap water. Replace Bristles Regularly: Dentists recommend replacing your toothbrush every 8–12 weeks. When bristles appear frayed or discolored, it’s time for a new brush. Handle Care: If the bamboo handle becomes slightly rough, sand gently with fine-grit sandpaper to restore smoothness. End-of-Life Disposal: Remove bristles with pliers and recycle or repurpose them; compost or upcycle the bamboo handle in your garden.
