Big bang ! The history of Couture Fashion is a fascinating journey that spans several centuries, originating in France and evolving into a global phenomenon. Couture refers to high-end, custom-made clothing that is meticulously crafted with the highest level of skill and craftsmanship.
Couture Fashion finds its roots in Paris during the mid-19th century. The term "couture" itself is a French word that means sewing or stitching. Charles Frederick Worth, an English designer who worked in Paris, is widely regarded as the first couturier. In 1858, he founded the House of Worth and introduced the concept of presenting seasonal collections of his designs to clients. He was also the first designer to put his label inside his garments, marking the birth of the fashion house as we know it today.

Silk Tea gown, 1898–1901 A woman wore a teagown to receive guests in her own home in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These garments were far less formal and structured that typical day or evening wear, and as a result, sometimes show more creative or unusual inspirations, such as historic or non-Western forms of dress. This example is a beautifully made and decorated teagown, which shows the influence of both Japanese embroidered kimonos and 18th century robes à la française. Interior padding intended to provide warmth and the deliberate choice of a magenta lining which picks up the purple details in the lily motifs are both signs of superior design and workmanship. Furthermore, the asymmetry of the embroidery is in keeping with the Art Nouveau aesthetic. While the maker is no longer known, the smocking of the bodice clearly relates to the distinctive Liberty & Company fashions in vogue during this period, and the store might easily have been the source for this unparalleled example. Let's talk about the latest Belgian I have featured on the website: Jurgi Persoons. He's an avant garde designer that graduated from the Antwerp Fashion academy and had a short lived career from 1996 to 2003. He did, however, do a capsule collection in collaboration with Dust magazine in 2017. Jurgi Persoons’ designs can be disturbing and arouse controversy, yet this is what makes them fascinating. Slanting hems, tweed combined with snake skin, tartan checks with finely worked embroideries create a style which is on the verge of bad taste. But despite taking these risks, his clothes are not ugly. With each new collection, Jurgi Persoons refers to human characteristics, sentiments, situations, convictions, radical attitudes and their emotional impact. As he states it: “People’s aspirations for a certain ideal appearance often transpire through the mistakes they make in the search for that ideal, and that is exactly what interests me most, because their failing efforts often produce quite hyperrealistic images. It’s the tension between these imperfect attempt to create a certain image and that which is considered socially acceptable — that evokes strong reactions, like aversion or adoration.” A 4-piece mini collection has just been posted online, with pieces from fall 1999 and fall 2001 Just one quick question: of the archival Belgian designers, who do you want me to introduce next? #jurgipersoons #lievevangorp #carolchristianpoell #anndemeulemeester #archivalfashion #90sfashion #avantgardefashion #belgianfashion #antwerpsix #antwerp6 #fashionarchives #vintagefashion #collectorsitem #1stdibs #fashionmuseum https://www.instagram.com/p/CJOuPQoA43t/?igshid=e3qvapwfi1an

Yellow and silver woven brocaded silk mini-mantua Grand Habit de Cour, made for an 18th century fashion doll, c. 1760. @fashion_museum_bath. Lace of silver thread, silk flower embellishments. French floral, striped pattern. Only 60cm tall. I've had such an obsession with the silhouette of this mantua/court gown for nearly a decade. Finally a week ago I discovered the rear view, displaying a somewhat long train, and revealing the bodice to be a fully boned court bodice typical of 18th century court dress. #bath #fashionmuseum #french #frenchfashion #fashion #dress #court #france #paris #england #import #antique #history #museum #gown #marieantoinette #silk #yellow #silver #lace #floral #england #english #flowers #versailles #metmuseum #miniature #doll (at Fashion Museum Bath) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4ZRrgFlU8X/?igshid=1kgomdyqzf0vh

Truly humbled to be invited by Fashion Museum in Bath to view this inspiring exhibition where my sustainable couture wedding dress was chosen as one of the 10 curated unique displays at ‘You Choose’ exhibition in Fashion Museum, alongside pieces from designers Kenzo, Ossie Clark, Junya Watanabe, Jean Paul Gaultier and Gareth Pugh, as well as historic treasures including a 1750s man’s worsted wool banyan, an 1881 beetle wing embroidered day dress and 1940s women’s cape. ‘Amongst over 100,000 objects in the Fashion Museum collection ranging from Shakespeare era to today’s leading designers (Christian Dior, Vivian Westwood and Alexander McQueen), Sanyukta Shrestha is the first designer of Nepali origin to be documented in the history of The Fashion Museum in 2012 and the only item identified as made in Nepal 🇳🇵till date.’ It is utterly incredible to receive this honour from one of the greatest Museums in the world. It has been a real pinch myself moment that has made me feel speechless and ecstatic. Thank you for bringing my vision into such a prestigious & unique showcase! It was certainly a mesmerising visit for me and my family, especially so touched by a dedicated museum tour by the exhibition curator Fleur Johnson. Thank you so much.🙏 Visit Fashion Museum, Exhibition is until 30th October 2022. The tickets are available on the Fashion Museum website! A picture you don't see quite often: a Margiela caban with the iconic cigarette shoulders, worn on the fall 1990 runway. This caban was meant to be worn open with the inner ties tied around the waist. On runway, skirts with large silver hoops (much like showercurtains) were hung from the ties. Since it needed some tlc, @wies.stortelder and the @co.conservation team restored it to pristine condition. If you have very old and fragile pieces to restore, this is by far the best address to go to! (Antwerp) To make you a little bit more excited: they are also restoring some A.F. Vandevorst at the moment. So as A.F. is closing completely at the end of the year, yes even the online sales, I am pleased to continue selling their archives in 2021. #margiela #maisonmartinmargiela #archivalmargiela #margielaarchives #vintagemargiela #archivemargiela #belgianfashion #avantgardefashion #fashionmuseum #archivefashion #collectorsitem #grail #grailed #1stdibs #margielacollector https://www.instagram.com/p/CIvU5ZZArN6/?igshid=1mdczvpt6loy0
