ARC Review: Kids' Nonfiction Books for March 2023: Darwin's Super-Pooping Worm Spectacular and Destiny Finds Her Way
*Summaries, Ratings, and Reviews for both books below the cut.
Darwin's Super-Pooping Worm Spectacular by Polly Owen
Order
Add to Goodreads
Publication Date: January 3, 2023
Synopsis:
Learn the funny and fascinating story of Charles Darwin and the groundbreaking discoveries his love of the humble worms led to in this hilarious illustrated book. Charles Darwin is widely known for his "Origin of Species" book, yet Darwin had another great love, and that was for worms. Told for the first time for children, this is the silly and fascinating true story of how Charles Darwin came to discover that the humble earthworm is the most important species on our planet. Darwin suspected worms were special but his scientist friends laughed at him. In a quest to find out the worms' special talent, Darwin played the bassoon to the worms to see if they could hear, laid out a picnic treasure hunt for them to see how well they could smell, among many other bizarre but entirely true experiments. But so far Darwin didn't find anything extra special about worms. Until, one day he realized that worms do have a superpower. They POO! Without their life sustaining, nutrient rich poo, there would be no plants and no animals on earth. Darwin's 40 years studying worms is still essential to our understanding of worms today, and ever since, scientists have taken him VERY seriously, and never again laughed at his love of worms. Told in a humorous and engaging way with non-fiction informationon each page to help educate alongside the story, curious minds will love this fact-filled, laugh-out-loud title. The story of Darwin and the worms not only centers around the perennially brilliant subject of poo, it teaches children about a key historic figure, the food cycle and deductive scientific thinking. It is also a heartwarming story of the triumph of a zany underdog who won't let bullies get in the way of his love for worms.
My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
This was super cute and my 3rd grader loved it and found it hilarious. (It has that universal kid appeal of talking about poop.) I can't believe I hadn't heard of Darwin's obsession with worms before.
The story was engaging and told with maximum humor. The illustrations were cute and humorous and matched the text perfectly. They also added quite a bit to the story.
I would definitely recommend this to kids in the 6-12 range who are interested in science.

My Rating: ★★★★★
My Review:
This short book is packed full of information about sloths and what happens to those who have been rescued and are being rehabilitated. The photos on each page are gorgeous and show the sloths' personalities and activities.
I look forward to reading this with my 3rd grader. He is really into animals right now and I think he will enjoy learning about this.
The text is at an appropriate reading level for my 3rd grader and he should be able to read it himself. The layout of each page is attractive, with photos and text arranged in an aesthetically pleasing and easy to read manner that draws the eye around the page.
I would recommend this to any kid who loves animals or is interested in animal rescue. It would be great in an elementary school library or classroom library.
My kiddo did in fact really enjoy reading this one. He even chose to read most of it aloud (after bargaining for reading every other page while I read the rest) and was really into the story. He found all the sloth pictures very cute.

Okay so here comes my mindless ramblings about mordern au! Wwx:
Mordern au! Wwx could be so many things honestly, like he could actually be famous genius researcher, professor, lawyer, crime investigator or even a famous model, pop star. Like the range is crazy, he is just so good at everything (except cooking lol). I personally think he would be a innovative scientist and renowned professor cuz' Wwx is naturally curious, creative and innovative.
I am thinking about how his life would have been better if he was born in today's world, like Wwx was honestly 'ahead of his time' kinda guy, they hated him because he was better, cooler and hotter. If he was famous in the mordern au and the whole getting cancelled thing were to happen, it would probably happen because someone tried to frame him *cough cough jgy or Su she cough cough* for the shit he didn't do or something.
But yeah Wwx is born to be an exceptional talent, a prodigy, he is THE HOT GUY EVER. I love him. Thank you reading this ramble.
#please Wwx as famous scientist and researcher i beg you#he is the hot nerd#like shows up to work dressed up in crop tops#and tight jeans and presents mindblowing studies#he could be a model for a side job if interested#i love him#wei wuxian#wei ying#mdzs#mo dao zu shi#mxtx#mdzs modern au#wangxian#mdzs headcanons#mxtx mdzs#mo xiang tong xiu

The fact that the Doof had been paired and proved most compatible with Perry, canonically and repeatedly proclaimed to be one of OWCA's best agents in the field, is curious to me.
Some fics have a throwaway line or two talking referring to his compatibility with other agents. I think, also, about the canonical fact that he remains as third most dangerous evil scientist in OWCA's ledger.
I also like thinking about the fact that we have been proven, multiple times, in VARIOUS dimensions and fluctuations to the time space continuem, that were he not continuously thwarted throughout his career, he would not only have achieved tyrannical rule, he would have EXCELLED in it, and perfectly undefeated, EVEN BY HIS EVIL PEERS that people loved to pretend were always more competent than him.
Like. I think about that. Why? What makes Heinz so dangerous? What made everyone else incompatible to a point OWCA realized they needed to send their best, and he needed to be on call ALL THE TIME?
Curious
#I turn the concept around in my head a lot#why not put him in jail? in OWCATraz?#the answer has to be the fact that you couldnt put him down that way. Either by political influence (his brother is a famous politician)#legal loopholes (his ex wife is a highly successful lawyer with old money)#or straight up ingenuity#Jail wouldnt have been able to stop him#arguably#such was the case with most evil scientists who are given a permaneng nemesis#like there must be somekind of prevalent circumstance that can't make them one and done#its such an interesting worldbuilding pursuit of thought#i really like they always make him a very powerful and malevolent villain in so many canon AUs#I love it when canon acknowledges his dangerous potential#i love villains#but exploring Heinz's specific type of villainy is so interesting and fun and new#heinz doofenshmirtz#perry the platypus#phineas and ferb#OWCA

🥜Happy National Peanut Butter Day! 🥜
While often credited with the invention of peanut butter, George Washington Carver did NOT actually create the delicious food. However, he did find over 300 uses for peanuts! This is why he was known as the “Peanut Man.”🥜

Alan Turing, the inventor of computer science, is a large reason the allies won WWII. A mathematician, he built a computer (named Christopher, after his childhood best friend and first love), that solved the German code Enigma. It has often been noted that it is likely Germany would’ve won otherwise.
He was later arrested and tried for “indecency,” meaning for being gay. When given the choice between prison and chemical castration, he chose the later, and began being injected with the female hormone estrogen.
He commited suicide two years later. However, his work lives on. We still have what is called the Turing test, which determines if one is a human or a machine. The term “Turing Machine” is also used to refer to a specific type of computer that uses tape. There is something called the Turing Award, given in the field of computer science. And notably, there is an (inaccurate) movie about him featuring Benedict Cumberbatch.
