I didn't want to do this because I already have one fanchild I created and don't really do anything with that I didn't want to make another one, but I did for shellshocked and I'm gonna make it everyone's problem.
If you all remember one of the AUs I talked about where Miles and Mikey were roommates, this would take place in that world.
Prepare yourselves for a bunch of incomplete ideas that are subject to change.
Okay to start off, this yokai mad scientist managed to steal DNA from Mikey and Miles (don't ask me how) in order to create an army of mutant super-soldiers with the abilities of the web-slinging hero and one of the most powerful mystic users for some reason. I specifically had it be a yokai to justify how they were able know of Mikey and steal his DNA. (I had the Dark Turtles from TMNT 2003 on my mind when thinking of the concept)
Once they get tipped off about what's happening, the two subdue the scientist and destroy any traces of their genetic material when they come across a baby clone already in development. They make the quick decision to free him from his containment and bring him back to their place.
**Unnecessary side note: The kid isn't a newborn. He's at least a few months old, old enough to be able to sit up on his own. I just wanted to clarify that.**
They wait at least a week before they introduce AJ (shellshocked kid) to their families.
They wanted to make sure he was okay and that he would be y'know stable, so they went to the Spider Society (in my opinion they owe Miles) to see if he was healthy and what abilities they could expect he would develop.
They also went to Draxum since he is like the go-to person for all things mystics.
Outside of all those people, Miles' parents are the first to meet AJ.
So officially, his full name is AJ Dario Hamato-Morales.
Originally, I wanted AJ to be short for Aaron Jefferson, but then I thought about it some more and liked the names Amari Jasper (or Jackson) better.
August was also considered a name because I thought it would be cute for his other nickname to be Auggie, but since I've seen August used as a name mainly for April's parents in fics I thought not to.
I guess I should talk about Mikey and Miles relationship. They're in their mid-20s and are roommates (in Brooklyn, NY), but they're also in this weird pre-dating stage where they're practically together but are (not so) oblivious to how they feel and act with each other. I'm just gonna say this all happens before they officially have a first date.
Now to get into my headcanons for AJ:
** Has a Mothra plushie.
** Looks human but possesses some of the traits of both a spider and turtle.
Able to wall-crawl. (Hadn't decided if he has spider-sense)
Able to secrete venom which can temporarily immobilize a person when bitten. Mikey and Miles are the only ones immune to it.
Gets a bit sluggish when really cold.
Does not have shell to retract into but instead bundles up in blankets or hoodies to feel safe.
** Was able to float a lot when younger. When older, has to relearn how to do that whenever he wants to.
** Has a Spider-Bot like the ones from the Disney Junior show Spidey and His Amazing Friends. Gifted one when he was 6 or 7 years old.
I want to say that Miles made the bot but had help from Lunella (yes I'm still on about that rottmntxmarvel crossover).
** Miles remained in contact with Miles 42/Miles G, so AJ knows him as "Uncle Milo."

Around the time Shane Langsam left their haredi Orthodox community in Brooklyn four years ago — shortly after a divorce and as they were beginning to trade dresses for pants and eat non-kosher food — they connected on Facebook with a kindred spirit, Jood Barnett.
Barnett had left a similar environment years earlier, and the two became a couple and moved in together. But they hid their relationship from their religious Jewish landlord, saying they were just friends, and kept up appearances to fit into the neighborhood — covering their windows on Shabbat to hide their use of electricity.
Things went well until the landlord’s wife entered the apartment to make a repair and saw that there was only one bed.
“They were nice to Jood. They would even invite us, to cook us our Shabbos meal, come for a holiday meal,” Langsam said. “But once they saw us as a couple, that was it.”
Soon after that, the landlord became hostile and sought to raise their rent by 15% — nearly double the city’s average rent increase this year. The landlord also refused to make repairs to the apartment and locked them out of the building’s laundry room, said the couple, who both use they/them pronouns.
The couple, who both work with special needs populations but were not employed at the time due to health issues, wanted to move but couldn’t afford a rent increase nor the cost of moving.
“When you leave, the community doesn’t support you and you don’t have the finances you need” for housing, Barnett said.
The couple’s problems with housing are typical of those who leave haredi communities, according to Naomi Moskowitz, director of economic empowerment at Footsteps, a New York nonprofit that helps its 2,400 members who have left haredi Orthodox Jewish communities.
In haredi communities, the norm is for people to live with their parents until marriage, or study in a residential yeshiva, then move in with their spouse — all the while relying on tight networks of family and communal support as well as, in some cases, public assistance.
Those who leave are often cut off from that social safety net, and find themselves searching for an affordable place to live in a city where housing is becoming scarcer and rents higher. Some of those who leave the community also lack secular education and job skills, compounding the challenges in creating a fresh start.
So Moskowitz is spearheading a new program to help Footsteps members acquire stable housing, which she said is a “key cornerstone” for those transitioning out of their communities.
“Somebody who already was sort of kicked out, for whatever reason, needs a job to be able to continue figuring out how to function and live in this world, but then it’s difficult to find a job if you don’t know where you’re sleeping, and it’s difficult to pay for rent,” Moskowitz said. “You get stuck in this loop.”
Moskowitz said Footsteps members, and their living situations, do not fit any one single profile before they leave their communities. There are 19-year-olds looking to start college, parents who live with their children and need to stay in the vicinity of their schools, and 65-year-olds who are “starting a new part of their journey,” she said. Haredi communities in New York are diverse, both financially and in terms of religious and cultural practices, from traditionalist Hasidic movements to “Yeshivish” non-Hasidic communities.
There is likewise no established playbook for finding housing for new Footsteps members, she said. While some leave their community after years of planning, and have some money saved up for rent, others lean on a secular relative or end up drifting from couch to couch at acquaintances’ homes.
When Moskowitz left her Yeshivish community in 2013, she was a 28-year-old single mother of three who was struggling financially while working for nonprofits, without family support. She put herself through college and a master’s program, and started working for Footsteps in 2020 “to help people traveling similar paths that I have traveled,” she said.
The genesis for the housing idea came during the pandemic, when Moskowitz set up a crisis fund with money from donors and foundations. The fund was created to aid members facing a range of economic or mental health challenges. Four years in, though, around 80% of the more than $500,000 it distributed to around 300 recipients went to people with housing needs, including to Langsam and Barnett.
This isn’t Footsteps first housing initiative: Beginning in 2006, the organization rented a dorm room at the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan — which had on-site housing and other support for residents — to provide members a place to sleep during short transitions. But few Footsteps members used the program and the organization did not have the funding to keep it going long-term. The partnership ended a few years later.
Moskowitz acknowledged that housing is “sort of a big beast to tackle” — both because of its cost in New York and because the organization wants its members to be self-sufficient, something long-term rent assistance would work against. Previously, the group had focused on fields like career services, educational support and providing community.
But with $6 million in total contributions over the year ending in October 2023, and a staff of more than 30, Moskowitz said Footsteps felt like it was in a place where it could begin to bolster its housing programs.
The organization organized a list of New York City housing support programs, did interviews with other non-profits to learn about their offerings and successful programs, worked with consultants and surveyed members. At first, the staff discussed renting apartments for members to use, but members’ diverse housing needs made that unworkable.
Moskowitz added, “People getting to choose where they want to live is a big, big piece of somebody’s independence.”
The program is getting off the ground as New York renters struggle with a housing crunch due to a shortage of available apartments. A report from Douglas Elliman showed that the median rent in Brooklyn is $3,650, up from $2,800 at the end of 2021, a strain for New Yorkers earning the median salary in the city of around $76,000. The vacancy rate, or the percentage of rental units that are unoccupied, is around 1.4%, the lowest rate in decades. The average up-front cost to move into an apartment last year was $10,454, according to a study by the StreetEasy rental platform.
The high costs place pressure on haredi communities that are growing quickly due to large family sizes. Haredi families have long sought more affordable housing outside the city in locations such as New Jersey and Rockland County. Orthodox Jews, who do not drive on Shabbat, also prioritize living within walking distance of a synagogue, leading communities to congregate in the same neighborhoods.
Nishma Research, a group that surveys U.S. Orthodox Jews, said in a 2021 report that around one-third of haredi Jews reported that their home’s location had a “significant negative impact” on their household budget.
Some haredi groups assist their community members with housing. The UJO of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn, based in the Satmar Hasidic community, assists area residents with applying for public housing benefits and other programs. The Crown Heights Central Jewish Community Council in the Chabad Hasidic community assists residents with renter’s rights advocacy and manages some apartments.
Other Jewish groups also provide housing support. The Met Council, a leading Jewish charity group, manages 1,200 housing units for low-income elderly people, both Jewish and non-Jewish. The Jewish Board, a social services group, provides housing support for New Yorkers living with mental illness.
“Rents in our area are getting out of control,” the Crown Heights Central Jewish Community Council advises on its website, adding that its apartments “are rented at affordable rates” and that people in a certain income range can apply.
But it cautions, “Apartments become available once in a while, and we have a waiting list of applicants.”
Footsteps also learned in its research phase that it wasn’t the only group helping with housing crises: The city has an array of housing support programs, though the system is difficult to navigate. So, in addition to the housing fund, Footsteps is looking to hire a full-time housing navigator to help members access existing support programs. In the meantime, it is referring members to groups such as Neighbors Together, a social services group in Brooklyn.
To date, the Footsteps’ housing program has distributed $80,000 to 51 members, Moskowitz said — an average of roughly $1,600 per person. The program does not pay members’ rent. Instead, it provides one-time stipends of $1,500 to $2,000 per individual for temporary needs such as a broker’s fee, moving costs or a security deposit. Members who have an apartment and are in a financial crunch due to a health crisis, for example, would also be able to apply for funding to help them get through the crisis.
“It’s not a large amount of money, but it’s enough to help somebody make that first step,” Moskowitz said. “So if somebody has a job and they’re ready, they know they can pay their rent, but they can’t come up with that big lump sum, the housing fund will help people make that jump.”
Alex Schwartz, a professor of urban policy at the New School who researches housing, said the initiative was similar to the “One Shot Deal” emergency cash assistance program from the city, which offers funding if people face challenges including nearly losing their housing or having their utilities shut off. But he said it is not a long-term solution.
“It may be a godsend for some people. Let’s say they have a job but they don’t have the savings to pay the brokerage fee,” Schwartz said of the Footsteps program, which he is not affiliated with. “It isn’t going to help if someone is unemployed or if it’s a mother with several young children and they don’t have the ability to work as well as pay for child care.”
He added, “It assumes they have the ability to generate the income necessary to afford rent and that’s a huge assumption.”
But Schwartz said the city’s housing crunch has been a chronic problem — “the need is just gigantic,” he said — and nonprofits that focus on it have long had a difficult time finding donors as they compete with other aid groups.
Moskowitz said there is not a specific goal for how much Footsteps plans to scale up the housing program, but she pointed to the organization’s educational scholarships program as an example. At first, the scholarships program distributed $15,000 to seven members, but grew as more members became aware of the program, and now grants around $500,000 per year.
The program will benefit members like Barnett and Langsam as they seek stable accommodation. Barnett’s experience is a case study in the challenges Footsteps members face.
After leaving their community around 10 years ago, Barnett bounced between friends’ and relatives’ homes. They rented a room, but the roommate stole their deposit, leaving them homeless, they said. Barnett qualified for public housing for those with mental health issues due to their past diagnoses for depression and PTSD, and was placed in a public housing program with a roommate who suffered from delusions, sometimes shouting at their hallucinations.
Barnett ended up in a hospital, then a group home, where they said they were harassed by other residents. Eventually their family offered support after finding out about their living situation, and gave Barnett money for a security deposit, letting them get the apartment where Langsam later moved in at the end of 2022.
Moskowitz overheard the couple discussing their housing issues at a Footsteps event, and told them about the crisis fund. Barnett and Langsam applied for the funding, and each received a stipend, one for $1,500 to pay for a moving truck and another for $1,800 to cover most of a security deposit.
The couple, who recently published a book based on their life experiences, signed a lease on a first-floor apartment elsewhere in Brooklyn. When they moved in, their pet cat jumped to the apartment’s broad window to enjoy the view. They have a warm relationship with their landlord, sharing food with him that they prepare for the holidays. Their neighbors greet them when they take their cat outside for a walk in a stroller.
“We were able to start over from trauma, to healing and to living,” Langsam said. “It’s just a pleasure to be in an area [where] you feel wanted, and you’re there and you could just live.”

[ casey deidrick, cismale, he/him/his. ] — spotted in the streets of brooklyn, it’s AUSTIN WALKER. they have lived in the city for 5 YEARS, working as a FOOTBALL PLAYER. the THIRTY-FIVE year old will probably be seen around BROOKLYN HEIGHTS a lot, seeing as that’s where they live. people say they can be a bit COCKY and SELF-ABSORBED, but friends know them to be LOYAL and CHARISMATIC. you know for sure you’ve found them when you’ve come across EARLY MORNING RUNS, THE SMELL AFTER IT RAINS, AND PUMP-UP PLAYLISTS.
Basics.
full name: austin james walker. nicknames: aj to family. hometown: cleveland, oh current location: brooklyn, ny age: 35. birthday: 4/5. star sign: aries. pronouns: he/his/him sexuality: bisexual king personality: he's extroverted, likes to be the center of attention, a bit brash, and sort of cocky. think your high school qb all grown up. he's full of himself, proud, and stubborn. but he's also extremely welcoming, likes to make new friends, and ride or die for his friends. he's the team captain trying to make sure everyone is having a good time at the team bonding event but also sneaking drinks in the back of the bus because he's here for a good time. a jock all grown up. likes: sitcoms, horror movies karaoke, cats, late nights, breakfast food, dance parties, road trips, novelty/touristy t-shirts dislikes: cold weather, period pieces, music snobs, tequila (bad experiences/memories), black coffee, reality tv dating shows fears: not making anything of himself, his family not being proud of him, spiders (especially those Big ones), irrelevancy, death...but not the concept just like...the after? he's a failed catholic rip trivia: country music lover, owns about 100 ties, secret baker, youngest of three
Bio.
like most things austin does, he showed up to his own birthday nearly three weeks early: an omen of things to come.
he was an active kid, so his parents, already dealing with two older children, put him into pretty much every sport possible: baseball, football, and basketball.
by high school, he'd narrowed that down to baseball and football. he had offers from a number of schools for both, but ultimately decided to stay close to home and attended the university of cincinatti on full scholarship
austin was drafted by his hometown bengals the third round and played his first eight seasons with the team, setting several records in the process including: most pass yards gained by a tight end in a season, most touchdowns in a season, and climbed into 2nd place all time in the bengals' list of tight end touchdowns
he was in the middle of a contract year when the unthinkable happened. during a playoff game, he caught a long pass from his quarterback like it was nothing and broke to his left for yards after the catch...and then he felt it. his knee buckled. a non-contact injury. before he'd even gotten the mri, he knew he'd torn something.
he ended up tearing his acl, requiring surgery and a lot of physical therapy to make it back onto the field. after 8 long months, he did so, posting a personal best in yards.
and the bengals subsequently traded him at that year's trade deadline. he was sent packing to the giants for picks and a wide receiver.
instead of letting that weigh him down, though, austin put in the work with his new team: he trained well, put in extra time at practice, and got involved in the community. he found that he loved new york -there was so much to do!- and he played some of his best football after the trade.
austin's career was not without its scandals, though: in his early years, he was known as a partier. he's been in the tabloids for everything from a pregnancy scare with his ex (true) to steroid use (not true).
he's known as a bit of a player: he had a string of exes when he was in ohio and even in the first couple of years in new york...but the rumor is, he might be getting closer to settling down.
Wanted Connections!
teammates/giants employees! would love a bromance or two with another football player, but i also like the idea of austin being friends with the social media manager, photographer, trainer, etc.
siblings! i would love a jason to his travis...but he's also got a third, secret (not really, lol, just not famous probably?) older sibling. i think he and his brother would be very close, but i'd be intrigued by a more antagonistic dynamic too...maybe something where the other sibling just recently moved?
exes: i'd love the ex-gf who was pregnant . up to you what happened there: did she actually get pregnant, was it just a scare? we can talk about it! he's also been involved with a string of lovers so i'd love some who are still friends with him, some who dislike him, some who recently moved from ohio...the possibilities are endless!
fwb: exactly what it says on the tin: nothing serious, just buds who hook up sometimes!
younger sibling/found family vibes: would love to have something/someone who austin has kind of...taken under his wing. he's the youngest in his family but i could see him being an older sibling vibe. he might be a bad influence sometimes but he's loyal t a fault!
former roommates! he makes enough money that i think he lives in a brownstone or something now, but when austin first moved, i could see him just like renting with some randoms he found on craigslist. they'd probably still be close. think the gang from new girl. i want those friends for austin. (alex, eli! the boysss)

Mothers and Other People is a poignant collection delving into themes of death, loss, #estrangement, nostalgia, and #family. From the ache of unspoken words to the weight of unresolved conflicts, the #poems in this collection delve into the emotional terrain of estrangement with raw honesty and vulnerability. Mothers and Other People invites readers on a journey of introspection and reflection, encouraging them to confront their own experiences of loss, estrangement, identity, and the complexities of #family #relationships.
Karen Taylor has written several short stories for anthologies, but this is her first poetry collection. She lives in Queens, NY and recently celebrated 25 years with her spouse, author/editor Laura Antoniou.
PRAISE FOR Mothers and Other People by Karen Taylor
“In Mothers and Other People, Karen Taylor writes of death, grief, and memory as a tapestry woven into the life of a narrator who is both embedded in and estranged from a cultural mélange of family. Taylor masterfully writes in the hybrid form of the lyric-narrative, each poem exploring a cause and effect but as Charles Simic wisely put it, not necessarily in that order. Taylor has dramatic insight and a cinematic eye. We can pause at the end of every line, linger, and give our vision and heart an opportunity to richly experience what she has offered. She never reports. Death, grief, and memory come into her immediate realization and are then woven through her complex artistry into an enriching and empathy expanding experience, a gift that elicits the best in us. In a world where being humane is endangered, reading Mothers and Other People offers us the invitation, perhaps the challenge that only we can determine that love remains.”
–Jack Ridl, author of Practicing to Walk Like a Heron, named finest collection of poetry by ForeWord Review, and of the forthcoming All at Once to be published by CavanKerry Press, autumn 2024
“This is a beautifully written and heartfelt collection that captures moments in the narrator’s life that are particularly humane and poignant. Members of the poet’s family of origin as well as her chosen family people these poems with their distinct personalities, lodging themselves deeply into this reader’s heart. There is much to admire and savor in this fine collection, which I hope will be the first of many!”
–Lesléa Newman, author of I Carry My Mother and I Wish My Father
“Moving, vivid, funny poems with an aching sense of the passage of time.Karen Taylor‘s poignant portraits of aged family members (and departed ones) go side by side with the author’s acute and tender personal sense of the loss of old places, objects, and even childhood itself.”
–Donna Minkowitz, author of Ferocious Romance, a Lambda Literary Award winner, and Growing Up Golem: How I Survived My Mother, Brooklyn and Some Really Bad Dates finalist for both the Lambda Literary Award and the Judy Grahn Nonfiction Award
“In Mothers and Other People, Karen Taylor uses her keen eye for detail and her deep understanding of the human heart to create a chapbook of devastating emotional depth and insight. Over the course of twenty concise and carefully crafted poems, she sings her reader, and her own self, an exquisite and often excruciating lullaby as she guides us on a journey away from, back to, and finally through the tactile and tangible sights, sounds, tastes, and textures of one deeply felt life. While the objects of her attention are precise and personal, her talent and integrity as a poet shape these poems into a portal for readers to remember their own precious and particular details. Her words weave together the rents in the delicate fabric of memory as she elevates the recitation of everyday objects and events of life to the elegiac. There is loss here, and betrayal, casual cruelty, and deep and enduring witness to kindness. Let these poems be a balm to your spirit.”

Alerte Desanges, 36 (USA 1994)
Alerte Desanges was an immigrant from Haiti who took care of her 3 daughters and her elderly mother. She supported the family by working as a caretaker for an elderly woman and had just bought a small house in Brooklyn when she received the exciting news that she was pregnant with her 4th baby.
Alerte’s excitement turned into fear when the baby was diagnosed with “deformities”. (It is unclear what the exact diagnosis was.) Many people have been pressured into abortion on the basis of eugenics after receiving a prenatal diagnosis, but prenatal testing can be wrong. There is a chance that Alerte’s baby was completely fine. Either way, the abortion was a tragedy and didn’t have to happen.
Alerte was 36 years old when she went to Choices Women's Medical Center in Queens on September 16, 1994. She didn’t want the abortion, but had been scared into it by staff over her child’s diagnosis. The abortionist was David Gluck, who had already had his medical license revoked for charting a dead teenage client as “pink, alert and responsive” and for writing fake prescriptions in order to sell drugs to pay for his gambling addiction.
After the abortion, Alerte started to act strange and started telling nurses she wanted to go home. Her odd behavior was actually a textbook early warning sign of shock. Anyone with medical training should have recognized this immediately, but nobody at the abortion facility did. They just labeled her “feisty” and “argumentative”.
Even though she’d been healthy before the abortion, Alerte went into cardiac arrest and her blood pressure dropped to dangerous levels. Finally, she was taken to the hospital where she died. Police investigated Alerte’s death.
When her family was told about her death, Alerte’s 66-year-old mother threw her hands up in the air and sobbed, "What are we going to do? What are we going to do? We can't go back to Haiti."
Legal abortion didn’t just kill Alerte and her child, but also stripped an immigrant family of a loving mother, caretaker and provider.

A gynecologist convicted of federal sex abuse charges should face at least 25 years in prison for assaulting a "staggering number of victims" during a quarter-century career as a serial sexual predator disguised as a doctor at prestigious Manhattan hospitals, prosecutors say in court papers.
Their presentence submission in Manhattan federal court late Tuesday precedes a hearing next week when Robert Hadden's victims can deliver statements to Judge Richard M. Berman before he sentences Hadden next month.
"For decades, the defendant repeatedly leveraged his position of power to target, exploit, deceive, and sexually violate patients seeking medical care, many of whom were especially vulnerable," prosecutors wrote. "He committed serial acts of abuse against patients — all while hiding behind his power as a doctor and enjoying professional and financial success."
NY JUDGE SENDS FORMER OB-GYN ROBERT HADDEN TO JAIL, CONVICTED OF SEXUALLY ABUSING HUNDREDS OF WOMEN
Hadden, 64, of Englewood, New Jersey, was convicted in January of enticing victims to cross state lines so he could sexually abuse them. At trial, nine former patients testified.
Defense lawyers last week said in their presentence submission that Hadden should face three years in prison after not abusing anyone since he stopped practicing medicine a decade ago.
Hadden has lost 35 pounds and repeatedly been threatened with violence at a federal jail in Brooklyn, leading him to stay in his cell except to shower or call family members, the lawyers said.
At the trial, Hadden's lawyers did not dispute that he had molested patients, but they said he was already prosecuted for those crimes in state court, where Hadden pleaded guilty in 2016 to allegations that he had abused several women. That plea required him to surrender his medical license, but he served no time behind bars.
Prosecutors said in their papers that Hadden's "calculated career as a serial sexual predator" began soon after he started working in 1987 at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, which later became New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Trial evidence proved Hadden committed from 167 to 310 acts of sexual abuse or assault on dozens of patients as he honed his abuse techniques so the assaults would go undetected for over 20 years, prosecutors wrote.
They said he built rapport with victims in a private office decorated with pictures of his children and put them at ease by asking about their personal lives and talking about his family.
FORMER OB-GYN ACCUSED OF RAPING HUNDREDS HAS FACED THREATS, EXTORTION BY OTHER INMATES, ACCORDING TO LAWYERS
Eventually, he sought sexual gratification when he asked victims "detailed, inappropriate, and medically unnecessary questions and provided unsolicited advice and commentary about their bodies, pubic hair, masturbation, sexual activity, sex toys, pornography, and sexual partners," prosecutors said.
They said he devised ways to get nurses and medical assistants to leave him alone with patients in the examination room, where he pretended that he needed to "conduct a fake second exam, during which time he sexually assaulted patients."
Prosecutors said they learned that Hadden assaulted "a staggering number of victims ... under the guise of medical care."
He worked at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital until complaints about his attacks shut down his career. The institutions have agreed to pay more than $236 million to settle civil claims by more than 200 former patients.

CHARACTER HISTORY [TW: DEATH, DRUGS, INJURY ]
Born in Brooklyn, NY Juliana wasn’t the kind of girl who’d dream small. Countless days in her youth were spent developing skills that she hoping would catapult her future and free her of the small town. Growing up Juliana spent a lot of nights alone, her mother working long shifts at the hospital and her father’s name being listed on a sheet of white paper as her mother was choosing a donor. Mariana Torres had no time for relationships, fully investing herself into her career but didn’t want to prevent herself from “experiencing everything life had to offer a woman” and decided she didn’t need a relationship to create a family within her household. This of course gave the woman her wish, but she never could of imagined just how busy she‘d become once she returned to work after Jules’ first year of life. The girl was left in the hands of her grandmother, Isobel, the years spent with her growing feelings of loneliness but also a love for cooking. There was one skill that was bigger than that, a topic she’d always beg her grandmother to select when it was time for their weekly movie night: dance, specifically ballet.
Her grandmother saw this love and brought her to local classes to finally give Jules a way to interact with other children her age before she started school. She started dancing at the age of 2, and finally once she reached high school she decided this was going to be her career. At 16 years old she was approached by a talent scout, they told her that if she kept this up she’d have a scholarship waiting for her come graduation. At 17 she was hit with the loss of her grandmother, someone who to the eye appeared to be in perfect health but always hid what she was feeling to be able to provide for everyone else and it caught up to her. Juliana felt like she’d lost the only parental figure she’d ever known, the person who taught her to fight for what she wanted and told her every day that she had the power to change everything around her if she was willing. The loss hit her hard, the girl began debating on if ballet was really something she wanted, but she had her grandmother’s voice in the back of her head telling her to keep pushing forward and she hasn’t really had a real conversation with her mother since.
Determination was in her blood and one this she didn’t want to repeat was starting a family too late or having to experience motherhood alone. She didn’t want to give her children the life that was thrown at her, a practically nonexistent father and a mother who meant well and never showed up because her career mattered more. No, Juliana knew a ballerinas career only lasted so long and once she obtained everything she wanted to do she’d be ready to find somewhere and someone to settle down with.
Senior year rolled around and Juliana never would of guessed she’d be roped into something so serious. The girl had her fair share of popularity but she got a kick out of not giving men like Lucas the time of day…but he wore her down. The pair didn’t seem like the most serious couple, touchy and affectionate to the public eye but nothing skimming below the surface until they were behind closed doors. Juliana felt comfortable to share her hopes, dreams, and everything in between.
College approached and Jules and Lucas were still going strong when she was approached by a ballet scout, they wanted her and were willing to give her anything they wanted to move her to New York. At first she declined, wanting to hold them off until she finished her studies but they returned, she’s to remind her this time that new ballerinas weren’t approached every day. She needed to break things off with Lucas and set her sights on her career if she actually wanted it to happen. Juliana arranged to finish her studies online, packing her packs and readying herself for the stage and lights that would illuminate her future.
Her sacrifice proved to be worth it when she landed her first lead role in Swan Lake, followed by Romeo and Juliet and Sleeping Beauty. Everything was perfect, she was unstoppable…until one night where she landed a jump and something felt off. Once the routine was over the pain stopped, causing her to take some over the counter medication to be safe and go about her day. As she continued to dance the pain came back, seeming to get worse the more she practiced her plié, but she couldn’t afford a day off if she was still able to stand on her feet. This continued for a few months, the pain and over the counter medication to make it through the season. By the end of one late night performance, Jules went back to get dressing room and couldn’t bring herself to get back on her feet. From her chair she called one of her friends for help and she was rushed into the emergency room where it was declared she needed an MRI to confirm she originally had what was a simple metatarsal stress fracture and her disregard caused a full blown fracture. 12 weeks of no dance in order to heal the damage was her consequence, taking her completely out of the running for upcoming auditions. She felt the world crumble around her, turning to the pills for pain for emotional support while she sat at home in new New York apartment.
Juliana was devastated when her doctor recommended she stop dancing full time, anything to prevent a future injury from ruining her ability to walk on her left foot forever. The brunette packed her bags and returned home to New York, using some of the money she kept saved away to secure a loft in Brooklyn. Now she’s back and trying to figure out life without her passion, but she hopes to soon find herself another one.
HEADCANONS
During practices she’d make sure to take her break just before sunset, loving how calm the colors made her feel as the sun dropped. That’s what made her buy a camera, though she was convinced she’d never get the chance to use it with how busy her schedule was.
After her injury she took a few photography classes, in awe with how capturing moments took her mind off of everything she lost. So when she moved back home and there was an opening at the New York Times for a photographer, that was the sign she needed to go for it. She didn't think much by applying and was even more shocked to land the role.
She does still use pain pills to manage her emotions, she doesn’t think it’s a problem because she’s able to stop for months at a time afterwards.

Biography: tws for homophobia, homelessness, anxiety, childhood illness/loss.
Selim was born in Brooklyn, NY only a couple of months after his parents immigrated in The United States from Mykonos. As the eldest child and only son of Bayram and Mercan, Selim grew up holding a unique pressure on his shoulders that he often felt wasn't extended to his younger sisters. Education; Corporate America; Marriage; Family - with a detailed guide set out in front of him, how had it started to go so wrong?
His early life was spent tugging the pigtails of his sisters; being hugged by his mother in the middle of the night when terror struck; learning from his father's acquired wisdom; helping stuff and roll grape leaves at the dinner table; playing outside with the other kids in their block of flats. He prayed at Mosque with his father; broke fast with his mother's hand in his; instilled confidence in his sisters hijab practice in the mirror. So why did he pull away completely from religion?
It started in middle school. He was well-liked, had a small but tight-knit group of friends who would all transfer over to high school when it came. Once an active and excitable child, Selim started coming home from school with stomach aching bouts of anxiety. Attentive parents, after an entire year of their son calling them on Wednesday afternoons begging to come home from school, scheduled an appointment with a specialist. Selim believed then that something good would come from it - but nothing did. The physicians didn't know the cause of his stomach pain and everything went back to relative normal. Every Wednesday, he would call home and every Wednesday, he would wait with his backpack for Mercan to pick him up after lunch.
Something was wrong with him. Selim felt crooked, off-kilter, wrong; in the locker room; outside with his friends as games of tag turned into talks of attraction and romantic pursuits; when one specific male friend leaned in too close; every time he pressed forehead to mat in prayer.
It wasn't until Sophomore year of high school that the reasons for his stomach pain became apparent. Beautiful; Talented; A mid-year transfer from out of state - Selim fell hard for him. Although the realization of his sexuality was startling, stomach pain turned to flutters, his mother noticed how her shy, quiet son turned back into the energetic and excitable kid that she had missed over the years of undiagnosed anxiety. Self-acceptance didn't come as difficultly as he thought it might; Selim supposed that it helped to have Fatih's support and mutual feelings to lean on when self-confidence waned or hesitance to tell his parents tried to create fights between them. It was a healthy relationship despite age and inexperience. However, as most teenagers, they were not being as discreet as they thought they were.
A neighbour had seen them in the courtyard. Holding hands; Hurling snowballs at one another; Laying close in the snow. She had told them, Selim's parents, and if Selim were to pinpoint the moment that his entire life fell apart, taking the carefully planned out life with it, it was then; the moment as he entered their family apartment to his mother's hesitance and his father's crossed arms.
He was kicked out, just like that, with a backpack of his things tossed at him, at the age of 16. He slept on the streets, in shelters, and faded from existence in the circles he once was in until he emancipated himself entirely from his parents. Working full-time and going to school was, as difficult as it felt at the time, an important moment. He no longer felt sick or crooked, he finally felt like himself.
He built a life for himself, graduated, went to university where he studied linguistics and eventually moved to Turkey as an English teacher for a couple of years before taking a position in Texas. He started to believe that the original plan that was set before him could still be attained. It never came. After education and a career, no matter how hard he tried to find someone to share life with, marriage started to feel like a mountain he wasn't willing to climb anymore.
That's when it came into his life, a different kind of love; unexpected, joyous, unconditional, one he believed for so long was completely out of reach. Ayla was born in the middle of the summer and adopted only a couple of months later. A friend of his hadn't wished for a child and understood that his heart yearned for it. So the plan changed, again. Education; Career; Children; Marriage? Something about being responsible for a life pushed his desire for it away. And it seemed, at least to Selim, that when he stopped looking for it, that's when it was found.
Wesley Kennedy came into his life at a time where he had not a logical thought in his mind. Ayla had a heart condition, he was a new parent, and the physician helped him through it. However, no longer Ayla's doctor, and far into their relationship, Selim's paranoia got the better of him; had it been a trauma bond? Was their relationship falling apart because he was beginning to heal from almost losing his daughter? He broke their engagement and left out of fear but when Wesley seemingly disappeared, he grew worried. How strange then for them to end up in the same town after life happened to both of them.
Connections:
Wesley Kennedy - Ex-Fiance
Wanted Connections: Selim's sisters could be fun connections! I'd love to explore whether or not they've reconnected as adults after Selim was kicked out or if this is the first time they're meeting since! I'd love to have some of his adult language students and explore that kind of connection or perhaps for him to have a circle of supportive parent friends. Almost lovers, College/University friends, antagonist connections could also be fun! No big plot points to mention as of now!
