Was super stoked to see this 25 mph enforcement sign flashing in Manhattan as part of #visionzero. Tried taking a video but my camera is hiding the video icon! #slowdownmanhattan #familiesforsafestreets #manhattan #newyorkcity #nyc #newyork

Here is a little tease of the next big mural project for @gswellmural. This big wall in Park Slope will feature a mural we are designing to help raise awareness about traffic fatalities. The statistics are frightening. Too many crashes and deaths are caused by distracted drivers. Put down your phones people! Can it be illegal to sell a swipe of a MetroCard card, but permissible to swipe a pedestrian with the front end of a bus? The empty space in my heart was recently filled with that question. On February 26th, it will be 5 years since my daughter, Julia, had been waiting to cross the street at a traffic light on Sunset Blvd. in Los Angeles. I watched in horror as her school bus driver inexplicably motioned from inside his bus window, setting my daughter, and his bus, in motion. What happened next is every parent's nightmare, and for some of us, the start of a crusade: oncoming, speeding traffic mowed her down from what turned out to be a school bus stop that did not meet California Vehicle Code. We have to ask ourselves: can the last step of one life become the first toward saving another? What else is there to do in the wake of tragedy, if not to turn it into a wake-up call? A school or city bus driver is granted an authority that speaks to all with a lesser class license. It is awarded to those who meet a higher standard of driving proficiency, which cannot reasonably be held to a lesser standard when things go wrong. Let's protect lives not livelihoods. Please.
