#Fallout 3 Dr. Li

So in Fallout 3, when Project Purity gets taken over by the Enclave, Dad shuts and locks the door to the chamber with himself, Colonel Autumn, a few Enclave soldiers, and Janice Kaplinski, and I can't help but wonder — for how long did James know what he was going to do? Was he going to sacrifice Janice as well as himself had she not been shot and killed by Autumn? Did she know that she was a sacrificial lamb, like James, but not quite? How would that have changed Dr. Li's view of James if that one round had not been fired? Janice worshipped Dr. Li like a hero — do you think Madison would've seen her younger, more idealistic self in Janice? Do you think if James would've killed Janice along with himself that Dr. Li would have seen him kill her hope and optimism once more by abandoning the project and the people who needed him one last time?

Idk, I have a lot of thoughts about Fallout 3.

Random but I love following James from Vault 112 because of the special dialogue he says.

I wish he lasted longer and I wish we could tell Amata what happened.

1/2 follow up question: who does Luna have a grudge against??? And how does it manifest if/when she runs into them again?

this was mostly written on my commute so apologies if its vague or poorly worded/written LOLs

Alphonse: This one is i guess pretty self explanatory and obvious? but her grudge started a long time ago, when she was a kid. Luna was a shy kid growing up, but once those pre-teen years hit, her 'sense of justice' (if you can call it that?) also developed. She got into a lot of fights by defending herself or Amata, sometimes questioning the Vault's rules and structure (most of the time this was just done innocently out of curiosity) and obviously she questioned the reason why everyone else disliked her so much? The Overseer being the first. The way he treated her and James, and even Jonas, was something she never understood at first. Him being insanely disapproving of her friendship with Amata pissed Luna off beyond belief, and the thought "I wish he'd drop dead right there and then" has passed through her head countless of times, even as a kid. The day of the escape caused this grudge to grow obviously, so by the time Luna saw him again during Trouble in the Homefront , she had already thought about all the ways she could hurt him. She didn't hurt him like that, though, she couldn't. Since her Speech is one of her top skills, she was able to persuade him without the use of ... physical violence... but she did shut him up verbally. Very dry, very apathetic and cynical (almost cruel) towards him in particular. There's just no sympathy with him, and I like to think that part of the reason why Alphonse steps down as Overseer is cus Luna (aside from the actual canon dialog, yada yada) told him off as a bad father and a failure and hit him where it hurt most (girl told him to kill himself in an indirect and sophisticated way).

The most obvious would be Butch. I won't really talk much about this in complete full detail cus id love to actually talk about their relationship in depth soon but, she has a pretty deep grudge against him for a specific reason. While it was kept a secret from literally everyone else in the Vault, their relationship was rather solid (as solid as hormone-driven, sex repressed teenagers can be) until some shit happened, and Butch left her to deal with the shitshow(s) alone. She doesn't hold a grudge against him for choosing something over her, but more so for leaving her to deal with the aftermath of it all lol. Running into him in the Vault again was whatever. It was awkward, but she never thought they'd see each other again out in the Wasteland, so she actually treated him kindly then. It's only in Rivet City where all of her feelings towards him (both negative and positive) came rushing back, and her grudge resurfacing. She really does have a bad habit of holding things over people's heads, so she'd often times just snap at Butch and remind him how he's treated her and what he did (honestly deserved). There is way more to it, but thats all im saying for now!

Dr. Li: Ok hear me out. Luna's 'grudge' on Li is a bit weird, maybe a bit irrational? idk you be the judge. Luna didn't really have a grudge against Li at first, but she definitely did NOT vibe with her ever. I think her 'grudge' began once she found out Madison had a thing for James, (Luna tried pushing that aside considering she was helping with P.P., but...). However, after James' death, Luna completely shut herself off from everything, and everyone related to the project and James, and that obviously meant Madison (and the B.O.S, etc) for like, a looong time. Because of this, Madison would then treat Luna like shit, as cynical as she always is, and would go on about how she 'couldn't allow the same cause of its abandonment 19 years ago to be the reason it gets delayed more'. All of that upset Luna more aside from grieving James, so she clearly grew a dislike for Li, and whenever they interacted she would close herself off or be cold. Their personalities clashed, both grieving the same person in different ways and Luna knew this, but the way Li made her feel about many things was the cause for that small grudge.

So, a while back I was thinking that within the Fallout chronology, there's going to be a period immediately after the war where you have a shitload of mad scientists running around the wastes, people with pre-war scientific training and resources who were disproportionately likely to have survival contingencies in place via their association with the military-industrial complex, The Enclave, Vault-Tec, or whoever else would have a pet evil scientist. For a while they're just a kind of guy you can run into. Then there's going to be a big period in the middle where that initial glut of hanger-ons have died off, actual trained scientists become as rare as unicorns, and the high-science of the pre-war era becomes the stuff of legend and superstition- this is the period where you get groups like the Ciphers from the Van Buren design doc. Then like 200 years after the fact, you'd see sufficient reconstruction of civilization that you start to get new scientists, you've got the Followers setting up an actual college in the boneyard to train people, you've got the NCR setting up The Office of Science and Industry, you've got the NCR going door-to-door looking to draft someone with theoretical physics knowledge and expecting to succeed, scientists are once again just a type of guy you can reasonably expect to run into. If we were graphing this it'd be a big inverted bell curve.

Anyway. The sheer number of scientists running around in Fallout 3 with no obvious source of training (James, Madison Li and her staff, Pinkerton, The Surgeon, Dr. Lesko, that one guy in vault 106, Julius Banfield, there are others I'm forgetting) is not unrelated to my theory that they fucked around with the intended timeframe for the game late in development.

the insane and totally ignored by bathesda implication of the lone wanderer being preassured to kill themselves for their father's dream despite the fact that there are so many more qualified people to do that is that a 19 year old kid was only ever seen by themself and those around them, from the people in the vault to the BOS to the enclave to the project purity people, as a tool in their father's toolbox.

expecially in the context of how linear fallout 3's story is and how you're pretty much just following liam neeson/dr li like the lone wanderer isnt treated as a person by the narrative or the other characters. theyre treated like a tool but never get the chance to realize that what theyre nothing to those they trust but an extention of their father's will. even in poisoning the water and betraying their father's life work, theyre still dying for a legacy and a cause that isnt theirs

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING <3 (fyi she is very self insert bc I want james to be my dad too T-T) Sorry if this is all over the place my brain just goes nyooooooom

So basically her name is Briar, I'm still not sure about her last name, I don't wanna give her a weird last name but I also don't want to give her a basic american last name (I'm not from the states so i have no idea what a good last name would be)

She is a work in progress character, I may have been playing fallout 3 since may but I just kept repeating the beginning lol so I didn't have a lot of character development for her until recently.

I gave her the same s.p.e.c.i.a.l. as james bc I thought it would be adorable outside the vault so

but recently I have been thinking about lowering intelligence and perception and raising charisma and luck, because I think that would be funny.

in every playthrough I do with her she gets the child at heart perk, so yeah she's a child at heart. her favourite settlement is actually Little Lamplight because 1: it looks cool af and 2: she likes teasing Mayor Maccready.

she's bisexual, but she never was in a relationship before or really felt anything towards her fellow vault inhabitants or anyone she met outside, how she discovered it shall remain a secret to us all (it were the gronak the barbarian comics)

she doesn't have any companions because they are very annoying when it comes to sneaking around (looking at you dogmeat and star paladdin cross)

she her favorite colour is pink.

She carries the teddy (the one from the toy box in "Baby Steps") around with her everywhere, as well as a bible which once belonged to Catherine and then belonged to James until finally she took it with her into the wasteland, although she herself is agnostic it means a lot to her.

I would love to be self indulgent and give her a phobia of dogs but i'm still unsure about it, and it would add a lot to her character because the wasteland is a scary place with actual monsters and her biggest fear being dogs would be interesting to say the least.

She definitely takes like 100% after james lookswise, well structure wise some of her facial features come from catherine but for the most part she's just james' mini me.

her birthday is the Lone Wander's canon birthday 13th of July 2258.

she is very high Karma (i legit cannot be mean to NPCs, I was so upset when I got low Karma for helping that one guy impress Sienna Pretovia)

she wears Jonas' glasses, she doesn't need glasses, but it's a sentimental thing...as well as a fashion statement.

speaking of jonas, he and her were up to mischief quite a lot, he was like an older brother/cousin to her and everytime she got into a fight with Butch she hoped it was jonas that would treat her because she loves to trash talk her classmates (and the overseer) and he tolerates it. (I LOVE JONAS SO DAMN MUCH!!!!!!!)

she scored clinical test subject on her G.O.A.T., which, in my understanding, is really cynical because it would force her dad to experiment on her (I have no idea what a clinical test subject actually does), she wanted to be a pip-boy programmer, she always thought Stanley's work and talk was interesting, she was really dissapointed with her result (honestly I'm pretty sure the results of the G.O.A.T. are actually predetermined by the overseer but that's just my opinion)

she ends up sacraficing herself for project purity, not because she doesn't like the botherhood of steel or something (actually she thinks they are sus but that's not important rn) and she also doesn't want someone else to sacrafice themself for it...her family started it so her family should end it to, that's kind of her way of thinking about it.

this sacrafice is also kind part of my idea of implementing her into fallout 4 (idc about nv tbh), thank you dr. li for becoming part of the institute, I mean Madision must feel horrible first two of her closest confidants die and then their daughter sacrafices herself for their life's (???) work, that must have left her with severe survivor's guilt so her creating a synth version of briar could be kinda her way to cope I guess, but I'm still not sure about this one lol (i just want my girl to interact with the now older maccready because i think that would be funny)

Like I said she's still a work in Progress character. ALSO ALSO I WANNA HEAR ABOUT YOUR LONE WANDERER TOO!!!

Let’s talk ER!! Who are your top five fave characters and why?

plssss thank u so so much!! no one ever sends me asks ab er im excited. this is actually hard bc there are a lot of great characters who’ve all annoyed me at some point dsjfksk. im going to rank them: 

5. mark - i almost picked kerry or benton because they have better character development. when i first started watching, i didnt care ab mark. and the season and a half post-susan i hated him akdjfsk. but i sobbed his last ep and mark leaving changed the tone of the show more than any other character who did. i always loved how (unless he was in a bad place) he put patients above his career, too. also 1x19.  

4. early season susan - the only reason shes not higher is because late season susan was terrible 😭. shes likable but her storylines are nonexistent. there was actually a lot of potential for her to battle kerry over the importance of being a good practitioner vs. research and fundraising. INSTEAD WE GOT CHUCK!!!! shes still a favorite because her characterization in s1 is amazing. shes a great teacher and a really good doctor. i loved her niece storyline in s2 and wish we could’ve seen more of her dealing with the fallout in s3. susan was my favorite character when i first started but her good seasons are so brief shes not a fave-fave 

3. neela - imagine if they didnt give neela thosee bad romantic storylines imagINE THAT!!! neela means sm to me because shes the only er character i identify with. it helps i blocked out tony and ray and only paid attention to her friendship with abby 😌. seriously, her plot ab being good in school compared to struggling in real life resonated with me bc i worry ab similar things. theres another scene when she talks about going into surgery because it gives her time to think and plan and a chance to be good. most people probably dont even rmr it but it meant a lot to me. neela is set up as a character who's the foil to abby- seemingly ready to be a doctor while abby struggles. but neela develops into someone who it takes a while to figure out what she should do and accept who she is/what shes good at. forever will love her for that  

2. carol - my other early season love <33. loved her deciding not to become a dr and her mental health storyline is so important. overall, shes a genuinely amazing character (shes mean to jeanie but she comes around and is nice eventually!!!). love how she wanted to foster the little girl and that she always treats the patients with dignity. 

1. abby - my best er girl the number one girl!!! abby went through sm that actually seeing her get to be happy meant the world to me. of all the characters, she had the most trauma. she was literally kidnapped and the next ep all she did was act a little sad, smoke, and that was it dsjkfsk. still abby never becomes bitter like mark or self-important the way carter did. she deals with a lot and still is always willing to help anyone she can. i dont think its possible to watch er and not love abby. she CARRIED the middle to end of er. mark lied bc abby set the tone, not carter. she was the heart of country general my forever er love <33

So, this is fun. I know this is a Fallout 3 tie-in - a lot of people seem to have come to the Commonwealth from the Capital Wasteland. You'd think there'd be somewhere nearer to go for most of them - my American geography isn't great, but Boston and D.C. aren't that close together, are they? (Nota bene: the writer didn't find out that Washington D.C. and Washington State were two different places until she was twelve. And then it was only because the Twilight craze was going on. Please be kind to the oblivious European.) Okay, Dr Li is specifically looking for the Institute, but so far as I know MacCready isn't. Or is this just a sign of how far the Brotherhood has spread, because if so...we might be in some trouble.

But...okay, if she weren't working for the Institute, Georgia feels she might get on better with Dr Li. If nothing else, they have a shared distaste for jackasses in cans. On the other hand, Dr Li went from serving a bunch of militaristic racist dickheads to working for the biggest slaving operation in the Commonwealth, so...if anything, it's a moral step down. Which, given her previous employers were the Brotherhood, is really saying something.

Robbing the Institute of one of its top people, however, is probably a good thing to do. It'll weaken things a bit, anyway. And, who knows, if Dr Li has issues with the Brotherhood too, she might work against them as well. All told, this seems like a pretty good job to take.
