Phoenix Hawk IIC
Though in many ways it resembles the combat prowess of the Inner Sphere's Charger, the Phoenix Hawk IIC is a fixture of many second-line Clan Clusters and front-line Successor State regiments during the Word of Blake Jihad.
During the reign of the lackluster Khan Jacob Masters, Clan Steel Viper entered a period of stagnation in all areas, including technological development. In a rare fit of innovation at the time, though one many observers considered oddball at best, the Steel Viper Scientist Caste decided to base a new assault BattleMech on the venerable 45-ton Phoenix Hawk chassis. At 80-tons, the resulting design was almost twice as heavy as the original, though it is severely undergunned for an assault 'Mech due its incredible speed for a 'Mech its size. Following the introduction of the OmniMech by Clan Coyote just three years later however, the Phoenix Hawk IIC largely saw itself relegated to second-line status.
Built around the Type 79 400 XL engine mounted on an Endo Steel skeleton fitted with five Jump Jets, the Phoenix Hawk IIC features as close as possible ground speed and agility to the original Phoenix Hawk as can be reasonably achieved on an 80-ton assault 'Mech, making it an effective fast interdiction unit. Ten and half tons of ferro-fibrous armor provide eighty-one percent of the maximum possible protection at its weight class, while ten Double Heat Sinks are sufficient for the weapons array.
The main armament of the Phoenix Hawk IIC is the paired Ultra Autocannon/10s, each of which has a three-ton ammunition bin it can draw on. The cannons are mounted in twin pods on either side of torso to the rear, a feature allowing technicians easy access to the weapons and reducing maintenance time both at base or in the field. A pair of Machine Guns provide extra firepower that is most useful against unarmored infantry. Despite the Clans' disdain for it, the 'Mech's weaponless arms are almost ideal for physical combat.
The Phoenix Hawk IIC would gain a new vitality following Clan Jade Falcon's ejection of the Steel Vipers from the Inner Sphere in 3061. Seeking to rapidly rebuild their weakened touman, Khan Perigard Zalman approached Clan Diamond Shark offering captured Heavy Laser technology and the plans for the ancient design in return for the production of a new variant for the Steel Viper's second-line clusters. Initially observers were curious why the Sharks dealt so fairly with such a weakened "customer", but the rapid development of even more deadly variations not included in the deal agreed with the Vipers provided some explanation, with production of the visually reworked chassis initiated at both Auxiliary Production Site #5 on Babylon and the rebuilt Trellshire Heavy Industries of Twycross.
By 3078 six variations of the Phoenix Hawk IIC were walking off Trellshire's production lines for the garrison forces of Diamond Shark as well as for sale to both Clan and Inner Sphere buyers. While some among the Clans opposed such sales to Spheroids, the focus on designs like the Phoenix Hawk IIC that are considered mediocre by Clan warrior but are still outstanding by Inner Sphere standards appears to be a conscious choice by the Sharks. Many of the variants also utilize ammunition-hungry weapons, a decision Clan observers wryly note ensures Inner Sphere buyers either make steady munitions purchases or are forced to more frequently buy replacement parts from the accelerated wear caused by using inferior Spheroid ordnance, both ensuring frequent repeat business for the Diamond Sharks.

FORD TORINO GT
Walking around a 1970/71 SportsRoof Torino at a classic car show in the States could be a confusing experience for Ozzie Ford enthusiasts. They might well be wondering, ‘Have I come all this way to look at a customised XA-XC Falcon hardtop?’ And for good reason.
When Ford Australia’s designers and engineers first sat down with blank sheets of paper in 1968 to come up with an all-new Falcon for 1972, the brief required them to make a comprehensive break from past styling. The boxy Falcon XY shape was to make way for the organic flowing look we became familiar with in the XA model and the subsequent XB and XC updates. At that time the Torino team at Dearborn was a couple of years ahead of Ford Australia in making a similar transition to a sleeker body style. No surprise then that the Ford Australia team made a conscious decision to draw on the second-generation Torino concept for some XA design elements. The decision was a no brainer. Why put in the effort and take on the costs of the pioneering stage of developing a new model when your corporate cousins have already done those hard yards?
Perhaps I’m not alone in admitting that the Torino made only a smallish blip on my Ford-model radar over the years. My excuse is that from an Australian perspective at least the Torino existed largely in the shadow of its high-profile stablemate, the Mustang.
This relative anonymity is surprising when you consider the Torino’s exposure on screens large and small over the decades. While the Gran Torino model got excellent exposure in the Starsky and Hutch TV series in the 70s and 80s and the later movie, its starring role in Clint Eastwood’s perfectly named 2008 movie, Gran Torino. capped off its profile raising. After seeing that movie you had a pretty good handle on what at least one classic Torino – the 1972 Gran Torino Sport – was all about. But there’s way more to the Torino story than was revealed by its '15 minutes of (TV/movie) fame'.
The Torino was launched in 1968 as an upmarket, upsized addition to the US Fairlane range. Naming it after Italy’s Motown was an interesting, but not ground-breaking move for Fomoco, with models like Capri, Montego and Granada also honouring various geographical locations. I'm not too sure, though, that a generously sized Torino would be my first choice for navigating the often narrow and crowded confines of its namesake city’s streets.
The Torino’s arrival relegated Fairlane-badged cars to entry-level status in Ford’s intermediate-category (US) line-up – a point underlined by Fairlane's sharing a number of panels with the utilitarian Ranchero pickup. Ultimately the Fairlane name was dropped from what had become the Torino model-range, bizarrely at the time when the Australian Fairlane was just hitting its straps as a desirable aspirational model with a long profitable future ahead of it for Ford Australia.
The Torino covered most model-variant bases with two four-door sedans, a two-door hardtop, even a Squire wagon, as well as Torino GT versions that also included a convertible. While base-line Torinos initially offered a 200ci in-line six as standard, V8 options included the 302ci, two versions of the 390ci and some months into the 1968 model year the 428ci Cobra-Jet was added to the motor menu to give credibility to the GT version's claim to 'Muscle Car' status.
The fresh styling of the second-generation Torino of 1970/71 we opened with was widely praised by the American motoring media. New engines included the 351ci Cleveland and buyers really wanting to burn some bitumen could opt for the Torino Cobra, powered by the legendary Cobra-Jet 429, a purpose-built hi-po engine that claimed an impressive 370 horsepower. Healthy Torino sales continued to produce smiles in Ford’s executive suite.
By 1972 with the 'Muscle Car' era fading to grey in the US, the GT label was dropped in favour of the blander ‘Gran Torino Sport’ label. These larger third-generation Torinos moved from the previous car’s taut ’n' terrific unitary construction, in favour of heavier body-on-frame construction. The Torino’s high-performance glory days were now fading fast.
Further evolution through to 1976, the Torino’s finale model, produced successively more laid-back Torinos – a process that for performance fans provided a grim contrast with the early Torino Cobras that had proudly flown the Ford flag in NASCAR racing.
Ford's Torino made a great start in 1968 by selling more than 100,000 units into a market begging for affordable ‘muscle’ cars. 1969 saw numbers dip by half but then recover. Entering the 1970s, sales were averaging above 60,000 annually. Lots of GT Torinos have been preserved or restored so there remains a deep pool into which buyers can dip to find decent cars.
Scarce variations including the 429 Cobra-Jet and Talladega occasionally top six figures in US sales but aren’t as yet totally out of reach.
The minimum specification a Torino buyer should consider while remaining credible is an M-Code with 5.8 litres and automatic transmission. These were built from 1970-72 and a few did come to Australia. Importing a decent car today will cost $45-55,000.
Seeking out a 6.4 or even 7.0-litre (390 or 428 cubic inch) GT will more seriously dent the balance. However they generally cost less than similar-looking XA-XB Falcon GT Hardtops.
Deep pockets and due diligence come to the fore when your target is an R-Code Cobra. Genuine, number-matching cars in close to showroom order (plus the cost of freighting and registering upon arrival) will top A$100,000.

Belgium unexpectedly announces the end of the F-16 Solo Display demo team

On February 19, 2024, the Belgian Air Force announced the unexpected dissolution of its famous F-16 Solo Display, citing the transition already begun to the F-35A Lightning II and other reasons.
The Belgian Air Force announced completely unexpectedly that the solo display of the F-16 will no longer exist. The decision is accompanied by the immediate dissolution of the exhibition team. This means that the 44-year story of the solo exhibition of the F-16 of the Belgian Air Component, which was so popular among viewers, suddenly and abruptly comes to an end.
The Belgian armed forces justified the end of the solo display of the F-16 with the ongoing transition of the F-16 to the F-35A Lightning II and also cited a decreasing number of F-16s available as the reason. Some F-16s of the Belgian Air Component are actually reaching the end of their structural life. In addition, some F-16s are needed to support the training of Ukrainian pilots of this type.
The history of the F-16 Solo Display began 44 years ago, when the F-16 was demonstrated to numerous viewers in Belgium and abroad. During this period, only 19 different solo exhibition pilots flew in the demonstrations and were supported by a large number of aircraft technicians to ensure that the demonstrations could always take place.
Senior aviator captain Steven "Vrieske" De Vries was the last Belgian solo pilot of the F-16, and the F-16 dubbed the "Dream Viper" was the last Belgian show jet of the F-16.

Ogun FTZ deal: Chinese firm targets Nigeria assets in eight countries
Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, the Chinese firm that got a court injunction to ground three presidential jets belonging to the Federal Government in Europe, has initiated plans to seize other Nigerian assets in the United Kingdom, United States of America and in six other countries, The PUNCH has learnt. Newalso learnt that the company had instituted legal proceedings in about eight jurisdictions globally, regarding the dispute.The other countries include Belgium, Canada, France, Singapore and the British Virgin Islands, documents relating to the case, which were obtained by our correspondent, were revealed on Thursday.This comes as the Federal Government vowed to protect its foreign assets from “predators.” There has been serious controversy following reports that the Chinese company got judgement to ground three presidential jets belonging to the Federal Government.In 2001, China and Nigeria signed a bilateral investment treaty aimed at promoting commercial investment between the two countries. In 2007, Ogun State reportedly entered into a joint venture agreement with a Chinese company and another company to create the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone Company. The Nigeria Export Processing Zones Authority, a Federal Government entity that oversees free-trade zones in Nigeria, then delegated control and operation of the free-trade zone to the company. In 2010, the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone Company contracted with Zhongshan’s parent company to develop an industrial park in the free-trade zone. The goal was for Zhongshan’s parent company to develop the park and build factories in it for tenants to use. In the first half of 2016, however, the agreement between both parties was terminated, leading to Zhongshan filing lawsuits in Nigerian federal and state courts seeking reinstatement of its contractual rights but the legal proceedings were discontinued in Spring 2018. However, a French court, recently, authorised the seizure of three of Nigeria’s presidential jets, two of the jets – a Dassault Falcon 7X and a Boeing 737 – are part of Nigeria’s presidential air fleet that were recently put up for sale and the third, an Airbus 330 purchased by Nigeria, but not yet delivered. Zhongshan had again dragged Ogun to court, where an independent arbitral tribunal, chaired by the former President of the UK Supreme Court, awarded the Chinese firm $74.5m compensation, which Ogun was yet to pay. The court order prohibited Nigeria from moving or selling the presidential jets until the Chinese firm was paid the $74.5m by Ogun, its sub-national. However, documents indicated that the Chinese company attempted to seize a jet being recovered by the country from Dan Etete as proceeds from fraudulent acts in Canada. The Federal Government had tracked down and grounded the luxury private jet purchased by former petroleum minister, Etete, with some of the alleged proceeds of the notorious $1.3bn Malabu OPL245 oil deal. The goal is clear – that Mr Etete will avoid the seizure of an asset he got with stolen Nigerian money, with Zhongshan’s connivance.” According to the documents, Zhongshan was originally engaged as a developer and manager of Fucheng Industrial Park but was asked to manage the facility after the government terminated the joint venture with CAI because it didn’t meet the necessary requirements. The document claimed that the Ogun government cancelled the contract after it received a Diplomatic Note 1601 from the Economic and Commercial Section of the PRC Consulate in Lagos, alleging that Guangdong illegally held shares in China Africa Investment Limited, a state asset and that entity (New South Group) was the company properly entitled to manage OGFTZ. The document read, “In 2007, the Ogun State Government, in partnership with the Guangdong province in China conceived and set up the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone, which sits on 2,000 hectares in Igbesa, Ogun State. “Ogun State signed a Joint Venture Agreement directly with China Guangdong Xinguang China-Africa Investment Limited representing Guangdong Province in the joint venture. OGFTZ houses several enterprises as well as subdevelopments, including one Fucheng Industrial Park, measuring 224 hectares. In 2010, OGFTZ contracted Zhongshan to develop and manage Fucheng Industrial Park.“ However, in 2012, Ogun State terminated the joint venture with CAI because CAI had not met obligations under the 2007 JVA. Ogun State then appointed Zhongshan as an interim manager of the Zone, since it was already managing Fucheng Industrial Park. In June 2012, Zhongshan assumed management control of a 51 per cent stake in CAI and subsequently signed another JVA with Ogun State Government in September 2013.”It further stated that the company had been making efforts to enforce the tribunal award. As of August 2024, there are court proceedings in about eight jurisdictions of the world regarding this dispute. “These include USA, UK, Belgium, Canada, France, and the British Virgin Islands. Till date, Zhongshan has not realised a single penny from the Award, and all signs indicate that Zhongshan is unlikely to do so anytime soon.” It added that the company was still tracking the location of Nigerian assets abroad. Meanwhile, a court document has revealed that the Chinese company was demanding compensation of $130.6m due to a breach of contract by reneging on terms between both parties to create the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone. The document obtained by our correspondent on Thursday, however, listed the Federal Government as the defendant because the direct agreement was between Nigeria and China and not with the company based on international treaty conditions. The case filed at the United States District Court for the District of Columbia (No. 1:22-cv-00170) was argued April 22, 2024 and decided August 9, 2024 by Circuit Judges Millett, Katsas and Childs. In presenting its argument, the company stated that Nigeria violated the Investment Treaty with China in five ways “by failing to provide Zhongshan with fair and equitable treatment, engaging in unreasonable discrimination, neglecting to protect Zhongshan, breaching the contract, and wrongfully expropriating investments without compensation.” Giving details of the deal, the company said it invested millions of dollars and significant resources to develop and build infrastructure in the industrial park, including roads, utilities and opened services such as a hospital, hotel, supermarket, and bank. By 2016, businesses had moved into the zone and Nigeria had collected approximately N160m in tax revenue from the free-trade zone. Read the full article

These properties, located at 15 Aigburth Hall Road and Beech Lodge, are estimated to be worth between £1.3 and £1.7 million. The Ogun State government and Zhongshan have been embroiled in this legal battle since 2016, following the termination of Zhongshan's management of the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone. Zhongshan initiated an investment treaty arbitration against Nigeria under the bilateral investment treaty between China and Nigeria. In March 2021, the arbitral tribunal awarded Zhongshan $55.7 million, plus $9.4 million in interest and additional costs. The court order from the Enforcement Judge at the Paris Judicial Court specifically empowers Zhongshan to seize the three Nigerian presidential jets. The order details the procedures for securing the aircraft, including positioning them to prevent takeoff and appointing a custodian for their safekeeping. Alberto Falcone notices Bruce's presence and asks Bruce for a reason to be inside the house. Bruce plays dumb and fools Alberto, telling him that he got lost looking for the bathroom. Bruce goes outside to where the party is and is planning on leaving before he notices that Selina Kyle is among the guests. They get together and stay in the party for a little longer.
In his office, Carmine is pondering about the future of his organization and how it all depends on Alberto to keep running his business. Milos, the bodyguard, spots unusual activity in one of the security cameras. There is a man in the building's garage and Carmine recognizes him as District Attorney Harvey Dent. Falcone sends some of his personal guards to deal with the intruder and three men beat Dent to a pulp until he passes out. Moments later, Dent is found unconscious by Bruce and Selina, who are just leaving the party. Dent thanks them but he manages to make his way out by himself. Selina asks Bruce what will they do next but Bruce excuses himself and tells her that it is already too late for him.
Harvey arrives at the GCPD Headquarters and tells Captain James Gordon what happened at Falcone's. Gordon isn't happy with Dent's unnecessary risks. Gordon also tells him that a "friend" of his might be able to help them to catch Falcone.
The party at Falcone's place is going smoothly until Carmine notices a dark figure entering his penthouse. Batman breaks in with the intention of searching Falcone's safe and finds that someone is already inside. Catwoman is stealing from Falcone's safe and Batman's presence startles her. They fight each other and Batman tells her that he has no business with her. Falcone's bodyguards enter the room and shoot at them. Batman uses a smoke bomb to get away along with Catwoman. Carmine isn't happy with his bodygards and for the intrusion, he places a bounty of one million dollars for the heads of Batman or Catwoman.
On their escape, Batman and Catwoman fall down from the penthouse but they land safe. Catwoman turns away from Batman and escapes. As Batman loses track of Catwoman, the Bat-Signal appears in the sky.
Gordon and Dent are at the rooftop of the GCPD HQ, waiting for Batman to show up. When he arrives, they decide to start a campaign against Carmine Falcone without breaking the law. The three of them agree and Batman leaves a ledger he managed to take from Falcone's penthouse. The ledger contains information on Falcone's illegal activities.
The next day, Bruce talks to the Bank board and refuses to let Falcone's money be allowed in the bank. However, Richard Daniel, the controlling shareholder, decides to make business with Falcone. Later that night, Daniel is visited by Batman and forced to resign his position in the bank, allowing Bruce to take control of all the bank's business and thus, cancelling Falcone's deal with the bank.
Johnny Vitti is told by his uncle Carmine to kill Richard Daniel as payback for resigning from the bank. Vitti murders Daniel in the middle of the street by shooting him.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the city, a man is preparing a gun by taping the handle, filing off the serial number and placing a baby bottle nipple as a silencer.
At his home, James Gordon receives a call to notify him that Daniel has been murdered. Gordon calls the Dent's house and Gilda Dent takes the message. She looks for Harvey and finds him in the basement, working with his tools. She tells him what happened and worries about Harvey's own safety. Harvey embraces and comforts her, but his eyes look away in a suspicious way.
Johnny Vitti is taking a bath when someone enters his place, points a gun at him and shoots him twice, killing him. The killer leaves the gun and a halloween carved pumpkin at the crime scene.
Later in James Gordon's office; Batman, Dent and Gordon analyze the evidence and can't find anything useful that would tell them the identity of the killer. The .22 caliber gun has been modified so that it was untraceable and the pumpkin might just be due to the fact that it was halloween already. Batman notices something outside and leaves Dent and Gordon alone. Batman finds Catwoman spying on them in a nearby rooftop. She tells Batman that she might be able to help them if in return he would help her when she needed. Batman agrees with no guarantees and Catwoman gives him valuable information on Carmine Falcone.
Batman and Dent follow Catwoman's information and they end up in a warehouse near the harbor. Inside the warehouse, there are large amounts of money stockpiled. It all belongs to Carmine Falcone and as he hasn't been able to deposit it in any bank, he has been forced to stock it. Dent reflects about how easy it would be for them to take some of that money and never be connected with it, but Batman doesn't allow him to think in that way. They pour gasoline on the piles of money and then they set it on fire as a way to harm Falcone.
It is Halloween night and Harvey arrives at his place after being successful in his war against Falcone. Gilda welcomes him home and Harvey notices a strange package delivered to their home. Harvey asks Gilda what is it but she doesn't know. When Harvey opens it, his home is blown to pieces by an automatic bomb inside the package.

Poland is Getting Moscow-Reaching Cruise Missiles - Technology Org
Poland will receive a large shipment of American weapons, which will include AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II and AIM-120C-8 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles, as well as JASSM-ER cruise missiles. This will significantly strengthen Polish national security as well as the security of NATO’s eastern border.
As Ukraine is still being torn apart by the Russian invasion, capabilities of long-range weapons like the JASSM-ER are very important for Poland and the entire region.

The JASSM-ER is a new version of JASSM with extended range (ER – Extended Range). It shares 70% of its components with the predecessor, but instead of the usual 370 km, it flies as far as 900-1000 km. Poland has become the second user of these weapons in the world and has about 70 missiles of this type. And now another large batch of these rockets could be coming.
This March, the US State Department approved the sale of up to eight hundred and twenty-one JASSM-ER missiles to Poland for $1.77 billion.
The JASSM-ER entered service in 2014. It is compatible with many different aircraft, including the American strategic bombers B-1 Lancer, B-2 Spirit, and the B-52 Stratofortress. It can also be launched by a range of jet fighters.
A bit more peculiar capability is launching the JASSM-ER from the Rapid Dragon module, which is basically a palletized cruise missile launcher, which can be deployed from regular military transport aircraft like the C-130 and the C-17. The JASSM-ER has a precision guidance system, based on GPS, inertial navigation system and IR sensors for target detection.
Poland will be able to launch JASSM-ER missiles from its F-16 jet fighters, and in the future, the F-35 will also be armed with them. The JASSM-ER is 4.3 m long and weighs approximately 1,200 kg. It can deliver a warhead weighing 450 kg to a distance of 900-1000 km. It is relatively difficult to detect and take down too, even if it is not actually stealth.
By the way, that 1,000 km range means that, at least theoretically, a JASSM-ER launched in Polish airspace could reach Moscow and St. Petersburg. Although it is only a cruise missile, Russia is clearly paying attention to the attack capabilities that Poland is trying to build up.
Poland reacted to the invasion of Ukraine with determination. It is buying new tanks, artillery systems, missile systems and other weapons. Within a few years, Poland will be one of the strongest military forces in Europe. Hopefully, this military might will not have to be put to combat use, but will work as a strong deterrence instead.

Ukraine wants to develop and buy fifth-generation poaching, and is not from the United States

Ukraine has shown interest in investing in the development and also in the acquisition of a fifth-generation fighter, since its engineers are currently involved in the development of the poaching jet engine.
During an interview with CNN Türk on February 15, 2024, the Ukrainian ambassador to Turkey, Vasyl Bodnar, revealed that Ukraine expressed its intention to acquire and deploy the fifth-generation Turkish poacher Kaan (King). Ambassador Bodnar discussed the partnership, noting that this initiative is part of a broader collaboration, reflecting a history of defense and technological cooperation between Turkey and Ukraine.
To supply the Kaan jet engine, Ukrainian companies have established a consortium to compete with other global and Turkish companies.
The collaboration in the Kaan engine between Ukraine and Turkey is described by Ambassador Bodnar as mutually beneficial. He mentioned the advantages of domestic production capacities, which aim to improve the global competitiveness of both nations. In addition, Bodnar suggested that the Kaan could be competitive with other advanced aircraft, such as the F-35 Lightning II and the F-22 Raptor. Ukraine's approach to the acquisition of Kaan jets is described by the ambassador as comprehensive, planning both the purchase and the effective deployment to improve national defense.
The Kaan fighter is part of Turkey's National Combat Aircraft program, which began in 2017, with the aim of improving the country's defense infrastructure. It was designed with the intention of surpassing the capabilities of American F-35 jets and is planned to replace the existing F-16 fighters of the Turkish Air Force. The program faced delays, with the initial flight of the Kaan prototype postponed from late December 2023 or early January 2024 to March, due to unspecified reasons that require more ground testing. Series production is scheduled to begin in 2028.
The TAI Kaan, initially referred to as TF-X or Turkish Fighter (TF) and also known as Milli Muharip Uçak (National Combat Aircraft), is being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) with the assistance of BAE Systems. The project aims to create a bimotor, all-climate poacher of air superiority, to succeed the F-16 Fighting Falcons of the Turkish Air Force and to operate alongside contemporary aircraft such as the F-35 Lightning II, with potential for international sales.
The project was started by the Executive Committee of the Defense Industry of Turkey on December 15, 2010, with the aim of developing a next-generation fighter. This led to an agreement in 2011 between the Undersecretary of Defence Industries of Turkey (now known as the Defense Industry Agency) and TAI, as well as TUSAS Engine Industries (TEI). TEI collaborates with the Ukrainian company Ivchenko Progress in the development of the Kaan engine since 2022. Initially, the Kaan will be equipped with General Electric F110 engines,
The Turkish company Aselsan is developing an advanced active electronic scanning radar for Kaan using gallium nitride technology. The aircraft's avionics aims to allow integration with unmanned aerial vehicles through secure data links.
The aircraft's armament is expected to include several air-to-air and air-to-surface missiles, along with different types of bombs to meet various mission requirements.

Then Thanos comes.
When Sam is one of the many turned to dust, leaving you alone and pregnant, you don’t think you’ll ever stop grieving. Yet, everyone tells you that Sam would want you to move on and live your life - that he’d want you to be happy. Gradually you open your heart up to another. Carol Danvers has lost people too. First her daughter, then her wife. As the two of you lean on each other, feelings grow and you move on together.
So what happens when Sam is returned to you?
Chapter 24: Reassurance
It was late.
Kit was already down for the night in the two-bedroom suite you had been sharing with Carol since the blip happened. Thankfully the sale of Maria’s house had meant Carol had a lot of US dollars she wouldn’t normally use because you’d been here for weeks now and the bill was racking up.
It wouldn’t be for much longer now. Today had been the day of Tony’s funeral and Carol was planning on returning to space. To your surprise and relief, Sam had said he would go with you and he’d come back to the hotel with you to work out the details.
So far things had been going really well. You’d all had dinner together and Sam had asked Kit all kinds of questions about what it was like in space and the little girl lit up as she told her dad about her school and friends and how you could see all the stars outside her bedroom window.
After dinner, Carol gave Kit her bath and Sam read her a story at bedtime.
It was like getting a little glimpse of things to come. The life you were going to have together. The easy conversation and laughter. The casual affection. Raising Kit as a family unit, three people who loved her more than anything else.
Now Kit was down for the night and things had stalled a little bit. A conversation needed to be had and no one knew quite how to start it because there was a high risk of someone saying something that could be misinterpreted and feelings could be hurt.
So you each sat on different chairs. You were on the couch feeling quite alone given the fact there were two other people in the room. Carol and Sam sat on a sofa chair facing each other.
“So,” Sam finally said. “How would this work exactly? You sure there will be a place for me up there?”
“Oh sure,” Carol said. “I’ve looked up your files. Pararescue with the airforce using prototype wings? I swear to god, she’s got a type.”
“You were air force?” Sam asked.
“Not only was I air force,” Carol said. “I flew prototype jets. It was an accident with one of those that gave me my powers.”
“Holy shit,” Sam laughed. “Well, you’re not kidding.” He looked at you with a smirk. “Like the particularly foolhardy flyboys, huh?”
“You know it,” you teased, relaxing a little.
“I am certain we can find something for you that will not only cover that adrenaline rush you obviously like, but that will also be helping people,” Carol said. “The galaxy is big. There’s a lot of people that need our help.”
“What about us? I mean… living situation,” Sam said.
“That depends on you mostly,” Carol said. “Look. I’m not gonna lie, the idea of you just moving in with us isn’t exactly my favorite. Not because I’m against sharing my space, but we don’t know each other. What if we just get on each other's nerves constantly? But…” she paused and let out a breath. “I’m willing to do it. We lived with Maria after all. Didn’t we?” she said, turning to you. “And you didn’t exactly know her going into that.”
“No. I didn’t. And it worked out fine considering the circumstances,” you agreed.
“So if you want to move right in with us, Sam, you can. We can find the room. But, you and I have separate rooms. You know … I don’t know if you think… or… “ she trailed off.
“I’m not following,” Sam said.
“I think what she’s saying is - you want to be in a romantic relationship with me right? This isn’t just about Kit, it’s about us too. Right?” you asked.
“Oh,” Sam said. “Yeah. I don’t know… I don’t know if I’m cut out for polyamory, but I’m willing to at least try it out. I still love you. You have my heart.”
You smiled and reached over taking his hand. He moved, next to you and kept his fingers linked with yours. “And… do you want to try to have a romantic relationship with Carol too.”
He sat back a little and blinked. “Oh,” he said. “Oh uh… I hadn’t… I mean… I don’t even know Carol.”
“I know,” you said, running your thumb over the back of his hand. “But - well where do you see this going? Do you want to just be with me while I’m with Carol? Or would you like all three of us to be open to being the three of us?”
He shook his head a little. “Is that what you had with … Maria was it?”
“Yeah, Maria. And no, I was never with Maria,” you said.
“I don’t know,” Sam said. “I’m still getting used to the idea that you’re seeing someone else. I don’t think I’m ready for that to even be a thought. I just… I need to figure out if it works with you and me first.”
Carol let out a breath. “Okay good,” she said. “So I guess if you want you can have your own place or move in with us.”
“Maybe my own place to start with,” Sam said. “I mean, I don’t know… I don’t want to get in the way.”
You caressed his cheek and tilted his head to face you. “You would never be in the way. I want you there.”
He smiled and leaned his forehead against yours. “Okay,” he whispered and kissed you softly. “Alright. Maybe start together? My own room though.”
“Alright. I’ll set it up,” Carol said. “You said you needed time to settle things up here first?”
“Yeah,” Sam said. “I’m helping Cap with returning the stones, and I want to go see my sister.”
“How long do you think you need?” she asked.
“Three weeks?” Sam said. “Is that okay?”
“As long as you need,” Carol said. “I just need to know how long I’ve got to get the place ready for you.”
“Yeah, three weeks should do it,” Sam said with a nod.
“Did you want to stay here with Sam or come home with me?” Carol asked.
“I might stay,” you said. “Give him a chance to get to know me now. And I haven’t seen Sarah for months. It would be good to take Kit down to see her.”
Carol moved over beside you and nosed your cheek. “I’ll miss you.”
You laughed. “It’s three weeks. We’ve been apart longer than that.”
“Not for years,” she said and kissed your cheek. You tilted your head and captured your lips. You kissed her tenderly and her thumb caressed your jaw as her tongue coaxed your lips apart. You hummed softly relaxing in between the two loves of your life when Sam’s hand tightened on your thigh.
You pulled back and looked at him. “Sorry. Is this weird for you?”
“Yes. No. I mean…” he shook his head and caressed his thumb up the inside of your thigh. “It’s definitely going to take some getting used to, but I can’t also lie and say seeing you kiss her isn’t also kind of a turn-on.”
You looked at Carol and she shrugged. When you turned back to Sam you brought your lips to his ears. “I can stop if you want me to. I don’t want to make you uncomfortable,” you whispered.
“No,” Sam said. “It’s okay.”
“Did you want to… participate?” you whispered.
Sam swallowed and shifted in his seat. “Is that - is that okay? I don’t wanna… you know?”
“I would really love that,” you said and kissed him deeply.
Maybe you were being stupid. Maybe it was selfish to even want both your lovers to come together with you like this. Maybe Sam only wanted it because he’d always been turned on by the idea of two women together, and that was the last reason that he should be doing this with you under these circumstances. Maybe Carol was only okay with it because she didn’t want to make waves after you’d been so accepting of what it had meant to be with her, and now she was bending over backward to do what she needed to keep you. You certainly had no idea if she was even attracted to men or not.
There were so many reasons why this was a bad idea and right now, you didn’t care about any of them. It felt too good to be between them as they turned their attention on you. It was too close to the best you could hope for the three of you. Three people together. It’s what you wanted, and if this was as close as you could ever get to that, you were going to take it while you had the chance.
Carol cupped your breasts and massaged them softly as she kissed your neck and you and Sam kissed, his hand sliding up under your skirt and his thumb skimmed over your panties. You shivered a little and spread your legs, the moisture already building and beginning to dampen your panties.
