★ Ali Abbas Zafar: If a superhero is selfless, half the battle is won..
Roshmila Bhattacharya | April 24th 2019
Ali Abbas Zafar explains what makes Salman Khan a crowdpuller; recounts his journey from biochemistry to Bollywood’s wonderland
In jeans and a Tee, Ali Abbas Zafar looks more like a guy-next-door than Bollywood’s A-list director. His Eid offering, the Salman Khan, Bhushan Kumar, Atul Agnihotri-produced Bharat, will open on June 5 and Ali is in the midst of post-production. But when he settles into his chair at a suburban studio, there’re no signs of rush. In fact, there’s a rare thehraav in his demeanour, a mathematical clarity in his thought process as he states that cinema is an applied art and not a fi ne art. Excerpts:
■ Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Gunday, Sultan, Tiger Zinda Hai, and now Bharat, you are one of the most sought-after directors today. Enjoying the high or does the pressure give you sleepless nights?
(Laughs) Oh, lots of sleepless nights but since I’m doing what makes me happy, the days are satisfying. The pressure increases when it’s a big Eid release for a pan-India audience. There are people who watch one-two films a year and measuring up to their expectations keeps me on my toes.
■ You were doing your masters in biochemistry at the Delhi University. What brought you to Bollywood?
I’m a filmmaker by accident. Kirori Mal College has an active theatre group, Players, whose alumni includes Mr Bachchan (Amitabh), Satish Kaushik, Kabir Khan and Habib Faisal. I wanted to join the Indian Administrative Services (IAS) but after becoming a part of this group, I realised this is what makes me happy. So, though I had no background in TV or film — my dad is in the armed forces and my mom is a teacher — your typical-small town boy came to Mumbai to tell stories.
■ Tell us about your first attempt at direction?
That was Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (the 2011 romcom). The simple story, told earnestly, grew out of real life. It was set in Dehradun where I’d grown up and Delhi where I was studying. My brother lived in London while I was a struggling assistant director in Mumbai, like Imran Khan’s character. It was a customised Bollywood film with a three-act structure, an emotional and musical graph. It struck a chord.
■ Did you get the girl in real life?
(Laughs) No, but you can live your dreams in films.
■ What kind of films did you grow up on?
In mid-90s Dehradun, we either played sports or watched movies. I saw many films with friends after school and on holidays. But the only film I saw at home was Deewar which my dad said balanced out right and wrong in a human way.
■ Would you like to remake Deewar?
Sultan was very close to Deewar in the way its protagonist’s self-esteem/ego swings between right and wrong, and his redemption happens when he hits rockbottom and comes from within. Islam says the strongest jihad is the one you fight within yourself.
■ Sultan could have played any sport, why wrestling?
He could have been a rock star too, but I chose to make him a sportsman because I’d played hockey and football. It was wrestling because hundreds watch you fall in the akhada, making a loss a public humiliation, and the rise a public celebration. Kushti is a centuries-old sport that rises from the grassroots and has the soul of Hindustan which made it easier for the mass audience to identify with.
■ Bharat is the journey of one man over six decades, reflecting the country’s history. How old are you to attempt a fi lm with an epic sweep?
(Laughs) I’m 36, but it’s not so much about experience. If you understand life, even if you haven’t lived it but seen it in those around, you can mirror it. This is my third film with Salman (Khan) and much of the maturity in my work comes from his experience.
Bharat is the story of every Indian, of togetherness and responsibilities. A line in the film goes, “Desh logon se banta hai aur logon ki pehchan unke parivar se hoti hai.” And as the nation is a family, that’s the metaphor Bharat hinges on without being preachy or political.
■ Why adapt a Korean film, Ode To My Father, to tell the story of Bharat?
Emotions are universal and what I liked about Ode To My Father was the coherency of the emotions and the text. We’ve added a lot of Indian cultural subtext, the film reflects the events and changes from 1947 to 2010. My dad believes if you pick the right story that says the right things, you can’t go wrong. While many Hindi films revolve around the mother and son, the father has often been portrayed as a hard disciplinarian. My relationship with my dad and Salman’s with his (Salim Khan) is different and at the core of the film. That’s why only Salman could play Bharat.
■ How did the title come about?
Since the film isn’t only about a father and son, I didn’t want to translate Ode To My Father. I was tossing in bed at 5 am when the title came to me. Hours later, when I met SK and Atul I told them I had a title, Bharat. They froze for two seconds, then Salman said “yes”. Since this man symbolises the nation what better than Bharat.
■ How do your parents view your phenomenal success?
(Smiles) My father is my hero and my mother my superhero. They’re simple people, have never visited a set, not even mine. They’re happy for me but still urge me to complete my education. My brother has two MBAs and a Masters in Social Work, my parents are both post-graduates, I’m the only uneducated one (Laughs).
■ Salman’s Tiger comes out of a room full of poisononous gas, guns blazing, and the audience cheers. How do you create this suspension of disbelief?
Whether it’s Gunday, Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan or Bharat, you have to connect with the audience in the first 20 minutes by showing something the character does or believes in that makes them root for him. Once that happens, they are with him even when he single-handedly decimates an entire army. If a superhero is selfless, and you have a star like Salman Khan, whom the audience loves, playing him, half the battle is won.
■ What makes Salman a superhero?
His honesty and earnestness. His communication with his audience is very direct. And even when he lives a character, Salman Khan doesn’t disappear 100 per cent. Whether its Tiger, Sultan or Bharat, his magical presence in there in the characters.
■ Has he evolved through the three films you’ve done together?
He was very evolved in the first film itself. I was the one who learnt from him. SK is a deep, mature and beautiful actor/human being, and when he identifies with an emotion, it just flows. There’s a scene in Sultan when he takes off his shirt and looks at his slightly out-of-shape body in the mirror. He avoided doing it till the last day, then suddenly stripped and faced the camera. It was a one-take shot and I couldn’t have asked for anything better. He’s so spontaneous when he’s in character. A star needs to be an actor, or he’ll fizzle out soon. Salman has been around for 30 years and his stardom has only grown.
■ Katrina Kaif and you share a beautiful relationship and she came on-board just days before Bharat rolled; after Priyanka Chopra confi ded her secret in you in the “nick of time” and exited.
Priyanka was doing the film but things happened. As a friend, she shared it with me and I told that her life is most important. She’s still a close friend. We laugh and talk twice a month. I’m very happy for her.
And I’m grateful to Katrina for stepping in. I was honest with her and told her I was sending her a script. If she liked it, we’d discuss it further. She’s my closest friend in Mumbai, we come from similar middleclass backgrounds, our values are the same, and we discuss everything. But on the work front, we’re very transparent with each other. If she doesn’t like something I’m doing, she lets me know and vice versa. In an industry where friendships don’t last even for months, ours has continued for over a decade.
■ What was her reaction to Bharat?
She told me it’s one of my best scripts and she’d do anything to be a part of the film. She’s done a phenomenal job. She’s grown as an actor, has a better command over the language now. She was loved in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, Tiger Zinda Hai and even her performance in Zero was well received. She’s in top form and the maturity she has brought to Madam Sir’s character is commendable. There were times when on the sets, Salman would take me to a corner and say, “Sir, yeh scene to Katrina le gayi, ab mujhe kuch karna padega.” (Laughs) We are both very fond of her and together in a happy space, so he can crack such jokes.
■ Is your next with Ranveer Singh?
We’re friends, we keep meeting and discussing ideas, but there’s nothing concrete.
■ Sultan 2 or a Tiger 3 happening?
I have a couple of stories and I’d like to return with Tiger someday. I also want to do a love story.
■ With Salman?
(Smiles) There’s a possibility, he’s a big romantic hero. And I always narrate my stories to him first, he’s very objective. Aditya Chopra is another strong influence. In our field, it’s hard to find people you can trust, I’m lucky I have them as my first bouncing boards. But to get out of Bharat, a journey with many shades, I want to do a big action film next. But till Eid, my focus is Bharat.

Talking on this occasion, the CM said proposals of parliamentarians are given importance in the formulation of district development package and every city has been equally included in the development process. Every decision is made with consultation and no compromise will be made on the respect of parliamentarians, he continued. We are a team of PM Imran Khan and will continue to serve the masses jointly, the CM stated.
A powerful mafia is engaged in hatching conspiracies against the PTI government from the day first and, regrettably, the tentacles of this mafia are scattered everywhere. Meanwhile, the opposition is also patronizing this mafia, he added and vowed to go to every length to nab the mafia. PM Imran Khan is a brave leader who believes in the politics of principles while the anarchistic elements are divided, he said. He advised the PDM to shun negative politics after repeated failures. Regrettably, record corruption was made in the past and kickbacks were received in different projects. Billions of rupees were looted by raising minarets of corruption, he added and vowed that past rulers will have to be answerable for their mega corruption.
Meanwhile, MPAs from Rawalpindi including Major (R) Muhammad Latasab Satti, Raja Saghir Ahmed, Javed Kauser, Chaudhary Sajid Mahmood, Wasiq Qayyum Abbasi, Malik Taimur, Amjad Mahmood Chaudhary, Ejaz Khan and Umer Tanvir also met with CM Punjab.
Talking to them, the CM reiterated that the respect of parliamentarians is his respect and work will be done on a priority basis in their constituencies. A separate development package has been devised for every city and public welfare projects have been started according to the needs of cities, he added. The CM advised the critics to look into their own peep adding that conspirators will not succeed. The opponents of development are engaged in baseless propaganda and the government will continue to respond to them with the politics of public services, he said. The government has taken immediate action in case of any discrepancy, he added. He said no unfair action will ever be initiated against anybody in Punjab and the government record is clean in this regard. Every day was started with a new corruption scandal in the past, he added.
The CM disclosed that opponents are yearning for NRO which they will not get in the presence of PM Imran Khan. The scope of work done in two and a half years is greater than the last decade, he added and vowed to expedite the journey of public service under the leadership of PM Imran Khan. The PDM is unnerved after repeated failures and the political future of opposition is dark, he maintained. The PDM adventure has ended in bitter failure as the people have recognized the tricksters. The PDM tried to impede the development journey but faced defeat, he said. In fact, the opposition is only interested in grabbing power but it should realise that elections will be held in 2023, concluded the CM.

★ ‘Bharat’: Salman is Salman, but also watch out for Katrina Kaif, says director Ali Abbas Zafar!
May 8, 2019
Khan and Kaif get back together for the official remake of the South Korean film ‘Ode to My Father’.
Tumblr media
The release of his latest movie, Bharat, is barely a month away. Ask writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar how he’s feeling and he says, “I am hanging in there.” Despite having delivered consecutive hits with Gunday (2014), Sultan (2016) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), Zafar says the period in the run-up to a release still feels like an exam.
Starring regular collaborators Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Bharat is an adaptation of the 2014 Korean film Ode to My Father and tracks the journey of its hero over 70 years. Zafar spoke to Scroll.in on the butterflies in his stomach and the dreams in his head of creating an Avengers-style movie with Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn.
Why do you say you are ‘hanging in there’? This phase should be familiar to you by now. This phase is like the time after you have taken your board exams and you think you have done really well, and you are waiting for that one day when the results will drop. Look at the recent CBSE results, by the way. Kids today are scoring 99 percent. They are turning into robots! Thank god that kind of pressure was not there for us, especially because I was not very good at academics anyway.
So what brought you to storytelling? I loved watching films. I used to bunk school and college to watch movies in the theatre. Even now, I am happiest when I am either watching a film or when I am directing on set. When I was at Kirori Mal College [in Delhi], I was part of the theatre group. The college has very strong alumni, including Amitabh Bachchan, Satish Kaushik and Habib Faisal who, over a period of time, have made a mark in the Indian film fraternity.
I was studying biochemistry, but I could feel a shift towards art and cinema. I knew my parents would be unhappy if I told them I was going to Mumbai to make movies. Nevertheless, I came to Mumbai in 2006 and started working as an assistant.
You seem to have a great love for cinema of the 1970s.
Yes, that was the golden period for Indian cinema. There can’t be a better balance of content, commerce and storytelling than the cinema of the ’70s. Great filmmakers like Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Manoj Kumar were making some incredible films that were profitable, talking to people and raising questions that were very pertinent for society at that point in time. If we take that as a template even today, the business of cinema can go somewhere else.
Look at Avengers. It’s a simple revenge story, but the way the revenge story has been contemporised makes you feel, oh my god, where is the world going? Similarly with Game of Thrones. If you see the world today and see what GOT is doing: the Whitewalkers represent terrorism, and until we unite to fight terrorism, it is going to come and kill us.
Cinema is about a point of view and telling a story, and if you can do that keeping in mind the entertainment factor required by a mainstream commercial film, then you are through.
There is a ‘Forrest Gump’ feel to ‘Ode to My Father’. Have you incorporated that into ‘Bharat’ too? I think the makers of Ode were very impressed with Forest Gump. See, if you are trying to showcase life over 70 years, then it will lend itself to a storytelling pattern similar to Forest Gump. All three films are told in chapters because you have to link the story. So the similarity in screenplay structure is there, and every story in every chapter has a beginning, middle and end with specific characters that he only meets in those chapters of Bharat. I have not revealed the special characters in the trailer because there should be some surprises for the audience.
What kind of research did you put in for the 70-year period covered in ‘Bharat’? This was the biggest part of scripting. It took us a year and a half to research and write the film because every chapter had to come from a specific timeframe. For example, the migration that happened in 1947 or the wave of unemployment that hit the country in the 1960s and then what happened with globalisation – these events trigger the main plot.
You have worked with Salman Khan repeatedly. Has the equation changed over the years? No, it’s still the same. Salman is still unpredictable, he still pulls my leg, and has moods. We are very good off-camera. He’s almost like an elder brother. We share everything. He has a great sense of humour and he likes my sense of humour too.
But when we come on set, it is a very clear director-actor relationship. Over time, we have built trust, and I like working with him. He’s a great star, and I think there is a very beautiful actor in him that I explored in Sultan and Tiger and, hopefully, we have taken that forward in Bharat.
What about Katrina Kaif, who starred in your first film, ‘Mere Brother Ki Dulhan’ (2011)? I think Katrina is going through the best phase of her career – from Tiger Zinda Hai to Zero to Bharat. She is blooming as an actress. I think sometimes what happens in your real life starts showing on camera, and the kind of experiences she has had are making her into an actor with a lot of emotional depth. I would like to do a film with her that can exploit all her powers.
What are those powers? I feel she is stunning looking and blooming as an actress. When that combination happens, you can write any text and she will fly. With Bharat, you will see a completely improved side to her language too. We pushed her to speak regular Hindi. We polished it and did workshops and she was incredible.
Wouldn’t you like to work with other actors? I would love to work with others, but Bhai [Salman Khan] chhod hi nahi rahein hai mujhe. Of course, I hope he gives me another film to do, and I do have a story for the next Tiger film, which I am excited about. But I also really want to work with Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn. I want to create my version of the Avengers with the five of them.

Yash Raj Films turns 50: Actors who began their film career with the production house, from Anushka Sharma to Ranveer Singh
Tumblr media
Yash Raj Films, founded by late filmmaker Yash Chopra, is currently in its 50th year. The production house, popularly known for its romantic dramas and colourful palette, has experimented with its offerings over the years, particularly when Aditya Chopra took over. From stylised action dramas to films set in small-town India, YRF has brought many a flavour to the big screen. Through a series of throwbacks, we will celebrate the legacy of the production house across the year. Before the coronavirus outbreak shook the world, YRF was scheduled to launch three new faces in their 50th year in 2020. These includes Sharvari, who was seen in Kabir Khan's Amazon Prime Video India Original show The Forgotten Army opposite Sunny Kaushal. She will make her Hindi film debut with Bunty Aur Babli 2, opposite Siddhant Chaturvedi.
Tumblr media
Sharvari, Shalini Pandey, and Manushi Chhillar Similarly, Shalini Pandey, who was noticed in Sandeep Vanga Reddy's 2017 romantic drama Arjun Reddy opposite Vijay Devarakonda, will make her Hindi film debut opposite yet another YRF find, Ranveer Singh, in the comedy Jayeshbhai Jordaar. And Manushi Chhillar, Miss World 2017, will make her long-awaited screen debut opposite Akshay Kumar in Chandraprakash Dwiwedi's historical drama Prithviraj. Now, a major chunk of the credit must go to the recurring casting director of the production house, Shanoo Sharma. She joined YRF in 2011, that coincided with an infusion of fresh blood into the studio. While introducing new directors was a norm since 2000s, the 2010s saw a surge in new faces, some of whom subsequently became A-list stars. The A-list wagon Anushka Sharma YRF had introduced new faces since 1970 but those were few and far between. None of them, despite making promising debuts, went on to register themselves as A-list stars. Yash Chopra can be credited with his share of finds like Poonam Dhillon and Saif Ali Khan but their debut films Trishul and Parampara were produced by Gulshan Rai and Firoz A Nadiadwala respectively, not YRF. The first major star to debut in a YRF film turned out to be the game-changer Anushka Sharma, who was cast opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Aditya Chopra's 2008 directorial Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. She played the role of Taani, a submissive homemaker who finds herself in a marriage without will and finds an unlikely partner in a dance class.
Tumblr media
Anushka maintains the film changed her life as she went on to become an A-list star and a producer herself, under the banner of Clean Slate Filmz. "Adi (Aditya Chopra) used to say that we have taken you because you can stand on your own against anyone. Yash ji had also said the same. For a young person like me to hear that was a huge confidence booster. The only reason I was so confident when I did the film is because I was so prepared. Confidence comes because you work so hard," she said to Press Trust of India. Anushka's three-film deal with YRF (a banner ritual since then) included Parmeet Sethi's 2010 directorial debut Badmaash Company and Maneesh Sharma's cult romantic comedy Band Baaja Baaraat. She was later seen in YRF films like Sharma's 2011 heist drama Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, Yash Chopra's 2012 romantic drama Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Ali Abbas Zafar's 2016 sports drama Sultan, and Sharat Kataria's 2018 film Sui Dhaaga: Made in India. Ranveer Singh Ranveer made his debut in the lead role opposite Anushka in Band Baaja Baaraat. The film catapulted Ranveer into the A-league, inviting comparison with the flavour of the season, Ranbir Kapoor, who was interestingly the first choice for the role. Ranveer played Bittoo, a brash Dilli ka launda, who collaborates with Anushka's character to start a wedding planning business, but ends up falling for her. He made the body language and accent of Bittoo so memorable that it took a while to let it sink in that Ranveer was actually a born and raised in Mumbai.
Tumblr media
It is common knowledge that Karan Johar was doubtful about Anushka's prospects before the release of her debut film, but Aditya Chopra kept a check on Ranveer's expectation as well. He told the actor, "You’re not the most good looking guy. You have to do some good acting if you want people to like you." Of course, Ranveer then went on to feature in YRF films like Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, Ali Abbas Zafar's 2004 buddy crime drama Gunday, Shaad Ali's 2014 action comedy Kill Dil, and Aditya Chopra's 2016 romantic comedy Befikre. Parineeti Chopra Interestingly, Parineeti was a public relations consultant in YRF before she was spotted by Shanoo for one of the four love interests of Ranveer's character in Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl. She stood out for her spoilt Delhi girl portrayal, and went on to do Habib Faisal's 2014 action romance Ishaqzaade as the female lead.
Tumblr media
Parineeti, who was already shooting for Ishaqzaade when her debut film released, was called by Yash Chopra, who thanked her for being part of his film. Parineeti was later seen in several YRF films like Maneesh's 2013 romantic drama Shuddh Desi Romance, Habib's 2014 food film Daawat-e-Ishq, Kill Dill, Akshoy Roy's 2017 directorial debut Meri Pyaari Bindu, and the upcoming Dibakar Banerjee film Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. Arjun Kapoor
Tumblr media
Arjun was supposed to make his debut in a film produced under Y Films, a subsidiary of YRF. But Aditya Chopra then cast him instead as Parma, the male lead in Ishaqzaade, an adaptation of William Shakespeare's iconic play Romeo & Juliet. Arjun was subsequently seen in YRF films like the 2013 crime drama Aurangzeb, Gunday, and will appear in Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar. Vaani Kapoor
Tumblr media
Vaani's performance in her debut film, a supporting character in Shudh Desi Romance, remains her best till date. Later, she was seen as the female lead in films like 2014 Tamil flick Aaha Kalyanam, Befikre, and most recently Siddharth Anand's 2019 espionage thriller War. She will next be seen opposite Ranbir in Karan Malhotra's dacoit drama Shamshera. Bhumi Pednekar Bhumi, a former assistant to Shanoo, auditioned for Sharat's 2015 romantic drama Dum Laga Ke Haisha. She was asked to gain weight tremendously to play Sandhya, a plus-sized wife to Ayushmann Khurrana's character.
Tumblr media
The film not only solidified Bhumi-Ayushmann as a dependable onscreen pair but also established Bhumi as an A-league actress. She has not been seen in a YRF film since her debut but has chosen to mix it up with a wide range of banners, directors, and roles. However, she continues to be represented by YRF. Other noticeable debuts Farah, actress Tabu's sister, got her big break in Hindi cinema through Yash Chopra's 1985 directorial Faasle. She later appeared in several films till 2005 but could never break the glass ceiling like her younger sister did. Mandira Bedi and Parmeet Sethi were introduced as supporting actors in Aditya Chopra's iconic 1995 romantic drama Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. They played siblings and the quintessential third vertex in the love triangles involving the protagonists Simran (Kajol) and Raj (Shah Rukh Khan). While they continue to act in films, they have not really made it big in the industry. Parmeet was last seen in Ruchi Narain's Disney+ Hotstar show Hundred, and Mandira appeared in Sujeeth's 2019 multilingual action entertainer Saaho. The Mohabbatien brigade in 2000 saw Aditya Chopra introduce as many as four newcomers, including his younger brother Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Kim Sharma, and Preeti Jhangiani. All of them formed a stellar ensemble, along with Jugal Hansraj, Jimmy Sheirgill, SRK, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Archana Puran Singh, Anupam Kher, and Helen. None of the newcomers are active actors today. Uday works in the backend of YRF, and was last noticeably seen in the Dhoom franchise. Shamita last appeared as a finalist in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 10. In 2002, Tulip Joshi made her debut with Sanjay Gadhvi's romantic comedy Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai. However, she went into oblivion after Anant Mahadevan's 2004 film Dil Maange More, opposite Shahid Kapoor. The same year, Sandhya Mridul graduated from television to films with a supporting role in Shaad Ali's Saathiya. She has appeared sporadically on screen since then, and last appeared in Ajay Bahl's 2019 courtroom drama Section 375 in films and ALTBalaji and ZEE5 show Mentalhood. Sagarika Ghatge was lauded for her portrayal of Preeti Sabarwal, an ambitious Indian hockey player in Shimit Amin's 2006 sports drama Chak De! India, alongside SRK, who played the coach. She has appeared in a few films since then, and is now married to Indian cricketer Zaheer Khan. Gauhar Khan and Shazahn Padamsee made their debut together in Amin's 2009 film Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, alongside Ranbir. Gauhar was last seen, in yet another corporate comedy, in the Hindi adaptation of The Office last year on Hotstar. Shazahn, however, was last seen way back in Sajid Khan's 2012 ensemble comedy Housefull 2. Meiyang Chang, who rose to fame with reality shows like Indian Idol and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa, appeared in a few YRF films but was the most noticed in Badmaash Company. Saqib Saleem was introduced in Nupur Asthana's 2010 film Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge, produced under Y Films. He has since then appeared in several noteworthy films like Karan Johar's short film in Bombay Talkies, Rohit Dhawan's 2016 film Dishoom, Remo D'Souza's 2018 action drama Race 3, and will be seen in Kabir Khan's sports drama 83 later this year. Shashank Arora and Shivani Raghuvanshi got a break in Kanu Behl's 2014 directorial debut Titli. They later reunited for Amazon Prime Video India Original show Made in Heaven last year. He last appeared in Geethu Mohandas' critically acclaimed gangster drama Moothon in 2019, and she was noticed in short film Devi earlier this year. The bad guys from the Mardaani franchise, Tahir Raj Bhasin and Vishal Jethwa, made remarkable debuts when they locked horns with Rani Mukerji's lead character. Both won awards for their breakthroughs, and Tahir later appeared in Nandita Das' 2018 critically acclaimed period drama Manto and Nitesh Tiwari's 2019 blockbuster Chhichhore. Unlikely acting turns Filmmaker Karan Johar and costume designer-cum-stylist Anaita Shroff Adajania made unexpected acting debuts as Raj and Simran's friends in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. This was three years before Johar made his directorial debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. He, of course, later appeared in a few acting roles, most notably as the antagonist in Anurag Kashyap's Bombay Velvet. Anaita continues to be an ace stylist, and made only one fleeting appearance as Saif Ali Khan's love interest Geeta in Nikkhil Advani's 2003 film Kal Ho Naa Ho. Stand-up comedian Abish Mathew played Ayushmann Khurrana's friend in Meri Pyaari Bindu. His role mostly seemed like an extension of his persona off-screen. He has not appeared in any film yet, and continues to be busy with his gigs and show Son of Abish. Read the full article

Global T20 Canada 2019
Schedule Fixtures,, Venues, Squads, Match Timings and Live Streaming Details
Yuvraj Singh and Manpreet Gony are the two Indian cricketers who will play in this edition. The second edition of the Global T20 Canada is all set to get underway on July 25. This time around, all the matches will be played at the CAA Centre in Brampton, Ontario unlike the inaugural season when Maple Leaf North-West Ground in King City hosted all the matches. The defending champions Vancouver Knights will face Toronto Nationals in the opening match of the season.
The format this season will be the same like the last year. But the West Indies B side is no more playing and Brampton Wolves is the new franchise which will take part in the competition. The Caribbean outfit though will be missed this year as they were the runners-up last season and would’ve lit up the tournament even this time around.
Superstars in action
However, a lot of international superstars are set to grace the Global T20 Canada this year. The likes of Yuvraj Singh, Brendon McCullum will be playing for the Toronto Nationals with Trent Boult also in the same side. In another amazing mix, Kane Williamson and Faf du Plessis will turn up for Edmonton Royals while the Universe Boss Chris Gayle will join hands with Rassie van der Dussen and Tim Southee along with Andre Russell for Vancouver Knights.
Dwayne Bravo, Umar Akmal and Chris Lynn have been signed by the Winnipeg franchise and the Brampton Wolves will have Shakib Al Hasan, Shahid Afridi, Wahab Riaz and the T20 legend Darren Sammy representing them. The star quality is smiling more on the Global T20 Canada this season and the organisers will be delighted that their hard work is paying off.

[TASK 030: PAKISTAN]
Shout out to anon for inspiring this task! There’s a masterlist below compiled of over 150+ Pakistani faceclaims categorised by gender with their occupation and ethnicity denoted if there was a reliable source. If you want want an extra challenge use random.org to pick a random number! Of course everything listed below are just suggestions and you can pick whichever character or whichever project you desire.
Any questions can be sent here and all tutorials have been linked below the cut for ease of access! REMEMBER to tag your resources with #TASKSWEEKLY and we will reblog them onto the main! This task can be tagged with whatever you want but if you want us to see it please be sure that our tag is the first five tags!
THE TASK
STEP 1: Decide on a FC you wish to create resources for! You can always do more than one but who are you starting with? There are links to masterlists you can use in order to find them and if you want help, just send us a message and we can pick one for you at random!
STEP 2: Pick what you want to create! You can obviously do more than one thing, but what do you want to start off with? Screencaps, RP icons, GIF packs, masterlists, PNG’s, fancasts, alternative FC’s - LITERALLY anything you desire!
STEP 3: Look back on tasks that we have created previously for tutorials on the thing you are creating unless you have whatever it is you are doing mastered - then of course feel free to just get on and do it. :)
STEP 4: Upload and tag with #TASKSWEEKLY! If you didn’t use your own screencaps/images make sure to credit where you got them from as we will not reblog packs which do not credit caps or original gifs from the original maker.
SOME ADVICE FROM US:

Note
are there any celebrity feuds in pakistan? or is the industry just one big happy family? the only feuds i can think of are: faysal Q-Aisha khan, mawra hocane-shaan-ali zafar
girl.
fawad khan vs faisal qureshi
fawad khan vs Badar Khalil
saba qamar vs aisha khan
aisha khan  vs humaima malick
aisha khan vs fayeza ansari
mawra hocane vs Alyy Khan
Mawra Hocane vs Hamza Abbasi
fahad mustafa vs saba qamar
iman ali vs mahira khan
ushna vs humayun vs aisha khan
atif aslam vs gohar vs farhan saeed
during last year’s lux style you could see some tension between ali zafar and fawad.
You just have to watch interviews of actors every now and then. Theres a lot of jealousy and tension even if its just on the surface.
