Lesson 15, Task 1: Where do I live?
Population & Demographics
The City of Kingston is located in eastern Ontario, where Lake Ontario flows into the St. Lawrence River, about 200 km from Canada's capital city of Ottawa, about 250 km from the center of our provincial capital of Toronto, and about 300 km from Montréal, Québec. Kingston was founded in 1673 on a First Nation site called Katarokwi, the settlement was eventually referred to as "the King's Town" in honor of King George III, with the name shortening to "Kingston" by 1788. Kingston is also nicknamed the "Limestone City" because of the many historic buildings built with local limestone.Kingston has a storied military and political history. Kingston was chosen as the first capital of Canada on February 15, 1841, and served in that role until 1844. Kingston was also the home of Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. In Kingston Ontario, there is a total of 159,560 occupants, 78,220 being male and 81,345 being female. Kingston has many males between the ages 20-24 and many females between the age of 45-49.
According to recent census data in 2016, 93% of the population was Caucasian; of the visible minorities with a population over 1,000, 1.6% were Chinese, 1.6% were aboriginal, 1.2% were South Asian, and 0.7% were black. Kingston has many religious members with about two-thirds of the population, that are members of Christian groups; the largest were Roman Catholics, who numbered 33,410 (28.1%), the United Church of Canada (15,520 or 13.0%), and the Anglican Church of Canada (12,340 or 10.5%).The Presbyterian Church was particularly influential in the 19th-century development of Kingston post-secondary education. The church was a founder and financial supporter of Queen's University until 1912 when it was agreed the university should become a secular institution.Sir John A. Macdonald was also a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Kingston. Groups other than Christians and the non-religious include Muslims (1,735 or 1.5%), Jews (785 or 0.7%), and Hindus (520 or 0.4%).A total of 35,435 people, or 29.8% of the population, identified as non-religious.
Living and Working in Kingston
A working person in Kingston who works a regular 37.5-hour work week at minimum wage with average expenditures may still not be able to make ends meet; that is, to keep her/his family adequately housed and fed or above the poverty line. Almost 35,000 people in Kingston’s local labor force have yearly earnings below the annualized equivalent of minimum wage. The minimum wage is not sufficient for Kingstonians to earn a livable income and an equitable standard of living. As a result, 16% of Kingstonians subsist below the poverty line and about 13% of Kingstonians are identified as working poor.4 Compounding the problem of low wages is Kingston’s tight housing market. Kingston is a difficult place to find a home. From 2005 to 2008, the number of households on the Social Housing Waiting List increased more than 10% and shelter use rose over 6%. The rental cost of a two-bedroom unit jumped 20.7% and the average price of a single-detached home soared by 68%. As well, Kingston boasts the third-highest rent for a three-bedroom apartment in the entire province. Only Toronto and Ottawa are more expensive in this regard. With a population of 117,000, Kingston is unique among Canadian cities because it contains within its boundaries seven Correctional Institutions along with the National Offices of Correctional Services Canada. Staff employed in these services total approximately 2,250. The 2006 Census indicates that 14% of the workforce in Kingston was employed in health care and social services; 12% in educational services; 12% in retail; 12% in the retail industry, and 8% in accommodation and food services.
Queens University has been assisting Kingston residents by researching and pinpointing the cost of living in our community. This website (http://www.queensu.ca/facultyrecruitment/sites/webpublish.queensu.ca.fsrwww/files/files/kingston/cost-of-living-2011.pdf) was released to assist those looking for numbers.
Kingston consistently ranks as one of the best places to live and work in Canada. In 2014, it was named one of the top seven most intelligent communities in the world by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF). Kingston's community-minded and active citizens enjoy an outstanding quality of life enhanced by recreational and creative opportunities and supported by excellent educational and healthcare facilities.
How our community is working together
Kingston's economy relies heavily on public sector institutions and establishments. The most important sectors are related to health care, education (Queen's University, the Royal Military College of Canada, and St. Lawrence College), government (including the military and correctional services), tourism and culture. The private sector accounts for half of Kingston's employment.
According to the Kingston Economic Development Corporation, the major employers in Kingston as of December 2014 were:
Canadian Forces Base Kingston (includes the Royal Military College of Canada and military and civilian personnel) 9,642
Queen's University 7,000
Kingston General Hospital 4,119
Limestone District School Board 3,100
Correctional Service of Canada 2,348
City of Kingston 1,286
Providence Care 1,175
Hotel Dieu Hospital 900
During the uncertain global economic conditions of the past year, Kingston not only held its own – the city thrived. In part, it is recognized that Kingston is able to remain sheltered from economic downturns by virtue of our public/private mix; stable military and academic base which attracts new talent and energy to the city each year; and, the diversified nature of local businesses. While regions around us reported layoffs and cutbacks, Kingston employers were hiring, local companies were expanding and new business was moving in.
Not only is business thriving, but the word is spreading that Kingston offers a lifestyle and choice of amenities that few other urban centers can match. Consistently ranked one of the top places to live in Canada, Kingston offers access to lakes, rivers, and parkland; a vibrant downtown core; year-round festivals, events and cultural offerings; and a safe place to raise a family or retire comfortably.
The cost of living may be higher than the more populated cities but, the quality of life is much greater – short commute times, family physicians accepting patients, and sports, recreational and cultural amenities to suit all tastes. It is strongly believed that Kingston is in a very competitive position for both business attraction and growth for many reasons – our diversified economy, strong existing business base, talented labor force, lifestyle, quality of place, educational institutions, healthcare and our cultural and historical foundation. These characteristics also attract people, making Kingston a great place to visit, live and work, and do business.
Newcomers to Kingston and those looking for a Canadian City to call home can use a powerful online tool to explore the historic waterfront community before they even arrive. The City of Kingston launched a Web portal that provides immigrants easy access to timely and relevant settlement information on all aspects of life in Kingston and promotes the benefits of making the community their new home. “The portal can help people get connected with the agencies and the information they need much more directly than before,” says Ann Lukits, one of two project coordinators for the Newcomers Web Portal. The Newcomers Web Portal (www.immigrationkingston.ca) was funded with a $300,652 grant from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration under the Canada-Ontario Immigration Agreement. Its aim is to make it easier for immigrants to move to Canada and Kingston.
In an effort to make Kingston’s work for stronger our economic committee has recently created a dedicated labor market development office. With a corporate mandate to secure jobs and investment, they feel the responsibility to help grow the local economy by working directly with new and existing companies to find and retain employees. Jeff Gouveia is the project manager overseeing the portfolio and has become Kingston’s ultimate matchmaker. He matches employers with employees. A recent Manpower report shows the Limestone City has the best employment outlook in Canada, with a net of 33 percent of employers planning to increase their workforce in the coming year.
youtube
Although Kingston’s community is struggling slightly to increase the general population, the city is joining forces to do everything possible to show the world Kingston is a great place to live and raise a family. Our community is joining forces, combining cultures and welcoming all. We encourage and promote equality, reminding Kingston residents that anyone can be the “I” in Kingston; any culture, any ethnicity. We are one community.
