I don't have any coherent thoughts on this but GOD it's so beautiful that Essek could have just been a villain, and yet here he is, a member of the Mighty Nein who is fighting alongside them to stop the end of the world. He could have started and stopped at being the Shadowhand, an interesting narrative foil to Caleb, but at the end of the day a villain to be defeated. But instead he loves the Nein! They were kind to him and they ruined his life in the most wonderful way through that kindness, because he came to care about people other than himself, which ruined everything for him. This wasn't a planned thing, because it couldn't be as a result of the story of the game being so dependant on the actions and decisions of the players, it just so happened that through choosing consistent kindness and friendship the Mighty Nein turned a man who probably would have wanted them dead into someone who loves them more than he loves anyone or anything else and through that love he can change and grow and become better

my hatred of the critique of stereotypes basically being “portraying POC in poverty is a stereotype!!!” grows every day because holy shit. poverty is not a choice. it’s a weapon used against minorities as punishment. it only becomes a stereotype when you don’t do the necessary sociological work to examine WHY that person is in poverty. same thing goes for homelessness. “wahhhh you can’t have people of color being homeless it’s a stereotype!” okay are we supposed to fucking ignore the fact that most homeless people are not fucking white??? like imagine having the option to speak to a very real truth faced by racial minorities and examine the sociological context and humanize these people and then instead choosing to make it seem like only white people in poverty matter 🤔🤔🤔 weird
