Walking from ground level to the platform level in the London Underground means we lose 4G connections. So no mobile phone connection right in the centre of one of the busiest cities in Europe. Yes there is WiFi but this is not designed for (fast) moving users and the signal drops in tunnels and also patchy. Calls are impossible. So, with the backing of the mayor of London, the Mobile Operators are looking to build 4G connection on the tube. O2 have joined Vodafone in a Pilot on the Jubilee line between Caning Town and Westminster. If successful the aim is to make the London Underground 4G connected by 2024-6, remembering the extremities of the network are already 4G connected as they run on the surface. (Note: as expected EE and Three have joined the party and participating in the pilot).
As part of the pilot fibre will be installed in the tunnels thus providing some extra network capacity to provide FTTP within London and maybe 5G in the future.

NBN FTTdp: A Few Things You Need to Know
The phrase FTTdp or Fiber to the Distribution Point has been mentioned frequently in the last few years. It is also referred to as ‘Fiber to the Curb/Kerb’ or FTTC/FTTK.
It can be described as a hybrid of FTTP or Fibre-to-the-Premise as well as FTTN or Fibre-to-the-Node. Instead of taking fibre to a central node in a neighborhood, it is laid directly to a property’s kerb & the final connection from the kerb to your home is generally made with the existing copper phone line.
Not only does this enable faster download speeds as well as better performance, but it also, make it cheaper for you to get a direct fibre connection to your home or business.
Who will be getting FTTdp?
Presently about 700,000 premises will be connected to the NBN or National Broadband Network using FTTdp technology.
It is mainly being used as a replacement for Optus’ HFC or Hybrid-Fibre Coaxial cable network. According to the NBN, FTTdp will mainly be deployed in areas where the use of Optus’ HFC cable network was planned.
Last year Fairfax had published leaked NBN documents. The documents revealed internal concerns about the quality of Optus’ HFC cable network, describing it as “not fully fit for purpose”. The NBN documents also suggested that some equipment had almost reached the end of its life & would need replacement, & that network was congested because of over-subscription.
How fast will be FTTdp connections?
Initially, FTTdp connections will enable NBN download speeds of about 100Mbps. However, speeds of up to 1Gbps will be possible, making FTTdp connections far more future proof, when it is combined with G.fast technology.
What exactly is G.fast technology?
G. fast technology is a new technology for carrying faster broadband signals over existing copper wires. The G.fast standard apparently allows the NBN to get more mileage out of old copper.
It was designed for copper lines that are shorter than 250 meters. Hence, it is ideal for FTTdp technology. However, it wouldn’t provide much of a speed benefit to a FTTN deployment.
How much will FTTdp connection cost?
Like rest of the NBN deployment, NBN will be covering the cost of your initial connection. Once your premise is connected to the NBN, you will have to sign-up with an NBN reseller. Pricing will be typically the same regardless of the technology type a business or home is connected with when it comes to fixed-line NBN connections. In most of cases, you will need to pay a little extra every month in order to get a faster connection.
In case, you are not taking up a 24-month contract, most telcos will be charging you an additional setup fee which is generally around the $100 mark.

San Francisco seeks universal fiber broadband with net neutrality and privacy
Enlarge / Lombard Street in San Francisco. (credit: Getty Images | Michael Lee)
San Francisco is trying to find network providers to build a city-wide, gigabit fiber Internet service with mandated net neutrality and consumer privacy protections. It would be an open-access network, allowing multiple ISPs to offer service over the same lines and compete for customers.
The city yesterday issued a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to find companies that are qualified "to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain a ubiquitous broadband FTTP [fiber-to-the-premises] network that permits retail service providers to lease capacity on the network." The project would also involve a free Wi-Fi service for city parks, city buildings, major thoroughfares, and visitor areas. Low-income residents would qualify for subsidies that make home Internet service more affordable.
ISPs offering service over the network would not be allowed to block or throttle lawful Internet traffic or engage in paid prioritization. ISPs would also need customers' opt-in consent "prior to collecting, using, disclosing, or permitting access to customer personal information or information about a customer's use of the network."

Boost your connectivity with reliable internet provider
A lot of homes and business owner will soon to be able to access ultra- fast broadband named NBN. National Broadband Network or known as Australian internet provider (NBN) is access data network in Australia. It composes wired and radio communication. It is known as substitutes copper wires and cable broadband with optical fiber and other tools to deliver more reliable, high-capacity internet at home.
It is depending on the type of connection you choose (FTTN, FTTP etc.) there's a lot of different plans that they offer either its budget option, premium services etc.
Factors can affect your NBN speed
1. Distance from node: A lot of people that connected through NBN was celled fibre to the node, which mean it is at the central and it transmit the remaining distance to all homes and businesses via used of existing copper wires. The more wire involved, the slower the speed you will see the result one's bandwidth reaches your home. At home it has 1km of a node behind of that it delivers up to 50 Mbps.
2. Peak hours: in most cases evening speed will drop and depending on the ISP that purchases the additional bandwidth from NBN. If you are on a plan from an ISP that prioritizes customer satisfaction, like Aussie Broadband does then you'll still get great speeds, even when everyone in your street is home and online.
NBN that fits on your needs
NBN measures speed in megabits per hour, it tells you how much data can be transferred per second. The higher you get megabits per sec the faster inter speed you get. Here are the nbn speed tiers.
- NBN 12: Is the entry level speed that usually have generally suits in singles that don't demand several their intern. It just a basic web browsing and light social media use. This composes into 1-2 person at home.
- NBN 25: It is good for one to two people at homes that have both use internet at the same time matter. This is ideal to individuals who love to stream movies and music.
- NBN 50: this is the most popular speed tier that Australia has. It gives standard and NBN speed, can stream at HD video and can access by 2- 4 person at home.
- NBN 100: It can be great for bigger families and all of you like to download big files, or you are a remote worker. This would be the best for you to have.
- NBN 250: It intended to maintain a stable connection with additional five users at once. And it can give you a buffer free if you usually play games and love watching live streams.
- NBN 1000: It usually avail by the individuals have a business at home and with a big household. This can give you ultra-fast mega fast speed.
To sum up, NBN is a mix of technologies that designed to provide fast access speed to internet services in Australia and all over the world. Always choose a plan that fits your daily routine to avoid some circumstances and choosing a fit internet service can give you a less cost.
