Trinity River Fly Fishing Report
Brian Clemens reports on 2.9.17
This year has been a crazy wet mess so I hope all of you have stayed safe and dry while mother nature shows us her fury. With this wet season, most of you know it has left almost all of Northern California blown out and too high to fish. With more coming down, it doesn't look like the Sac Valley will clear up anytime soon. However, there has been a glimmer of hope, which I will talk about shortly. I will have to say, I am super excited and really looking forward to our spring to fall fishing with all the snow we have in the mountains. What this awesome snow pack means is a longer spring as well as a great summer and fall fishing with lots of cold water for the fish to thrive and for us to play. Even though things do not look so great right now, come late spring, summer and fall, its going to be great. So hang in there. If you are looking to get out now...........here ya go...............
Fishing Report: Well this one is pretty easy, all rivers are blown and unfishable except for one.........
Trinity River: The Trinity has been the saving grace for any guide permitted on this river, and it has been fishing pretty darn good considering it is the only wadable/fishable river in Nor Cal. Meaning its been a bit more crowded than normal. Right now she is a bit high as well as brown, but with a big break in the rain just around the corner, this will be the place to be for the next month, maybe even until the beginning of April. The fishing has been consistent with some days being down right epic. We have been seeing some big fish hooked and landed, some reaching 30"+ and up to 15lbs, however, the average fish has been 24-28"/4-8lbs and full of chrome bright spunk. The big thing this year has been being up there and actually fishing as lots of reports have read its slow to even don't go. But if you are up there and put in your time you will be greatly rewarded. The Trinity should fish good for the remainder of this month as well into mid-March, and if the flows stay steady, you will want to be there. Also, if you love to swing like me, now's the time. Some of my best days swinging with or without clients has been in late Feb to mid March. Oh did I forget to mention the dry fly fishing, oh yes, dry fly fishing for steelhead and browns during this time can be off the chart. So if you are itching to get out, the Trinity has the cure for you, and we still have some available dates if you are looking to book a trip.
"Be the Report, don't Believe the Report"
Trinity Dates: Feb 20,21,22 March 6,7,8,9,27,28,29,30,31 More dates available upon request
If you are looking to book spring dates in the Sac Valley, start looking at reserving them now. Come late March to early April, the Feather will be fishable once again. Personally I think it will be slightly earlier, but by April 1st she will be ready to go. If you have fished the Feather in the spring, then you know how awesome this fishery is as well as how hot these steelhead are. Pound for Pound hardest fighting steelhead you will hook into next to fishing a coastal river. So if you are looking to book April and May, reserve them now, cuz as soon as these Sac Valley Rivers become fishable again, available dates will be hard to come by. Spring dates are already filling up.
Lastly for anyone interested in joining me in Baja in late July for Dorado, Yellowfin, Wahoo and many more, please contact me and I'll send you the details.
Hope you all enjoyed the report, wish I had more to report on. Hopefully, I will have more on the next one. Thank you and looking forward to hearing from you

Lower Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Capt. Hogan Brown reports on 4.5.18
Lower Feather River the last week was pretty decent for spring steelhead fish both on the swing and nymphing. The swing grab was best the first part of the day on bigger flies but the grabs were pretty short once the sun hit the water. Midday ounce the caddis started to come off switching to smaller soft hackle fly was best. The river is too high and unfishable throughout as of Wednesday as DWR makes room for what is said to be a big push of water coming from the next storm. Hopefully, the high flows will pull up more fish and the river will drop soon.
Tumblr media
Migratory Striper Fishing has been decent, haven't found any giant schools but good small pods of fish spread out and with the high water some more fish should show up. March April are prime migratory striper time.

Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Ryan Johnston reports on 3.29.18
Feather River
Feather River - The Feather River has been average as of late. There are more and more fish starting to show up in the system. Currently, there are a lot of fish in the 17-19" range. It has been challenging to find bigger fish this spring. It is just a matter of time before we run into a couple of good ones. One thing that needs to be noted is that the flows came up drastically this week to 4,000 cfs and with the increased flows came a ton of off-color water.
Tumblr media
The current visibility is about 2 feet in low flow. So if you head up this way don't let the off-color water scare you away. There are still fish to be caught even in the adverse conditions. The flows are supposed to decrease and stabilize by the weekend so expect good fishing for the month of April. If you are interested in booking a trip I have the following dates still available. April 13- May 2, 7-9, 30-31

Lower Sac and Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Ryan Johnston reports on 3.16.18
Lower Sac
The fishing on the Sac continues to impress. The amount of bugs coming off right now is really impressive. From spring caddis, to March Browns, to PMDs, and even baetis in the mix there are all kinds of food in the drift right now to get those rainbows fat and happy. The best part is that we are getting some legitimate dry fly fishing in every day right now. I have been averaging about 5-6 fish on dry flies the last several weeks. For those of you who frequent the Lower Sac know how rare that is to find consistently feeding off of the top. The best fishing has been from 11PM - 3PM each day. Expect things to slow down a bit this week with the rain in the forecast but once the sun pops out again then it will be back to rocking and rolling.
Tumblr media
Feather River
There are a handful of spring steelhead on the Feather right now. It seems like the first wave of fish have finally moved in to the river. When I was over there last week it seemed like there were quite a few smaller fish in the system with most of the fish in the 14-18" range. The Feather will continue to improve over the next couple of weeks before we get into the prime time window of late March - April.

Chico/Oroville Fly Fishing Report
Capt Hogan Brown Reports on 11.23.2017
Spent a few days out on the water this last week with clients and fishing on my own...
Feather River - aka Butte county's Capital City Fish Ditch - the Feather has had a great run of steelhead his year. Nothing huge in size but all good solid central valley size steelhead. 20-25" football size fish. The crowds of both guides and bank anglers have been there in force as well so it is a real crap shoot as to getting water. I usually put on the water a bit later and slip in behind all the early bird guides and do longer floats to cover water. If you are bank angler don't rush to the river...you wont be the first one there. I am convinced people sleep in their cars to be on the water first. My clients caught good numbers of fish on eggs and some early alvins patterns as well as the standard nymphs - PT's, Olive birds nest, san juan worms.
Tumblr media
Butte Creek - The creek has been up and down flow wise and timing a trip to the creek can be tough as it jumps up and down with any amount of rain. There are fish in the creek but covering water is key to finding them. Nymphing and swinging flies will catch fish on the creek if you search out the water best suited for both.
Tumblr media
Lake Oroville - winter spotted bass fishing is turning on and fishing float and fly rigs as well as slow stripping minnow patterns is starting to really turn on. This is one of the most under appreciated bass fisheries during the winter. A really fun place to spend the day.
Open dates for winter trout, steelhead, and bass
Dec 21 -23, 27-30

Lower Feather Fly Fishing Report
11.23.2017
The Lower Feather has been fishing pretty well as of late. The Low flow section below the dam has a pretty solid number of salmon on redds. There have been a number of adult steelhead and half pounders caught up here. As always when fishing around redds be very careful and watch where you step. Swinging egg sucking leaches and nymphing will find you fish.

Lower Sac and Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Hogan Brown reports on 9.15.2017
Been spending a few days here and there striper fishing on the Lower Sac, Swinging some flies on the upper feather, and conventional salmon fishing for the table...Striper fishing has been good as fall feels like it is finally here and the temperatures are cooling down and the days are getting shorter. We have been getting some nice fish in the 10-15lb range that were not around in the summer (which I think these are the perfect size fish) as well as a few of the big trophy fish. Biggest issue is that the salmon on the Sac are not showing up and these fish usually push the bigger stripers in a more consistent way to the banks and into the feeding lanes. So we have still been getting big fish but the "fall bonanza" where the big fish are around ALOT is a bit slow...that said fishing is good and we have nothing to complain about.
I personally fished a few days on my own on the Feather up through the low flow on the feather swinging some flies on my lighter switch rods and have stuck a few fish but nothing huge or that I would call a true "adult" fish yet. Also been dragging some row and yarn on the feather for some king salmon. At $25 a pound for wild caught salmon and two boys that plow through protein on a daily basis I am trying to fill the fridge this year. Most of the fish are still "BBQ" quality fish and will be for a few weeks when they began to turn to "smoker" quality fish.

Northern California Fly Fishing Report
Brian Clemens at Nor Cal Fly Guides Reports on 8.23.2017
Tumblr media
American River: Flows - 3600cfs Clarity - Clear Fishing - Fair to Good The shad are finally gone, YYEEEEESSSSSS!!!!! This means that its time for striper fishing again, and it has been getting better over the past few weeks. We are seeing the typically shakers, but a few bigger fish from 3-7lbs have been hooked as well, this will continue though Sept and is a great half day trip. We are also getting into a good number of half pounders and if you are in the right place at the right time you will hook a few adults pushing 6lbs. Personally I love this time of year for a few reasons, during the week there are few rafters on the water and you can target both stripers, steelhead and even salmon (if they are in) in the same day with some good success. Great time of year to swing your light weight 2 handed rods and in the evening throwing dries can be epic. All in all, a great time of year to be on the American, crowds are gone and fishing is pretty good. As fall approaches its only going to get better.
Stripers: traditional clousers, pole dancers Nymphs: caddis, mayflies, prince nymphs, copper johns, eggs Swinging: soft hackles, silver hiltons, ho bo speys, olive streamers, Thalken's tiny dancer, Anderson's euphoria
Feather River: Flows - 1200cfs low flow, 6500cfs high flow Clarity - 8ft viz slight color Fishing - Fair - good Boy has this river been a saving grace for me this year. With most of the Nor Cal rivers blown out from January to May, it was tough to get out on the water to work, but when June came around that was a different story. The flows and clarity on the Feather became good enough to get out and fish it and boy were we surprised. Lots and lots of fish to be had and not a single angler in site. For almost a month we had this river to ourself, and it was fishing consistently everyday. Lots of half pounders from 14-18" and a handful of fish from 18-22" everyday and the occasional 22-26" fish was hooked as well. The fishing continued will into July as the flows decreased, and now that the flows are at a steady 1500cfs in the low flow, we are still hitting a good number of halfies with an adult mixed in every so often. We are starting to see the salmon in the low flow, finally, and in a few weeks they should be stacked. If you havent been on the feather yet this season, I would recommend checking it out, it has completely changed, a lot like the Yuba, a completely new river. With the showing of the salmon that means only one thing, the "EGG BITE" is soon to follow. Oct Nov is prime time for the egg bite on the Feather and if you are looking to book, booking in advance is highly recommended.
Nymphs: princes, caddis, mayflies, worms, eggs, pts, Swinging: tan soft hackles, anderson's euphories, ho bo speys, thalken's tiny dancer, olive streamers
Tumblr media
Yuba River: Flows - 2600cfs Clarity - Gin Clear Fishing - Fair to good The Newba has been fishing fair to good with plenty of fish to go around. We are seeing a good number of fish coming up and eating dries and hoppers, and the indicator rig has been super consistent for numbers, but not needed. The usual dries and nymphs have been working as well as the Pink Fat Albert, which is like candy for these trout and hopper droppers/dry droppers are producing as well. The salmon are very slow to show here, and we are hopping that we start seeing some in the next few weeks. If you are looking to get out and not travel, give the Newba a try, but wade carefully, at 2600cfs its extremely pushy, and wading across is not going to happen. If you know the access points and where the fish hold (they havent moved around to much), you will come out with some nice fish to hand. Oh if you like to swing, definitely give that a go, they have been hammering swung flies.
Dries: almost anything, fat alberts tan and pink Nymphs: rubberlegs, stoneflies, caddis, mayflies, worms, eggs Swinging: tan soft hackles, olive streamers
Lower Sac: Flows - 10,500cfs Clarity - good, 10ft, slightly off color Fishing - Good As always the Lower Sac continues to fish as it always does, and has been extremely consistent. The upper stretch opened back up on August 1st and we are seeing some nice fish in that stretch, but we are also seeing a good number of boat hatches. I was told that on the opener every parking lot from Posse to Anderson was full and over following and at one point a good friend counted 38 boats in the Posse Grounds fishing area, CRAZY!!!! Of course the Lower Sac will continue to fish well as fall approaches, and it doesn't stop there. "Egg Bite" is just around the corner and if you arent thinking about it by now, you should be, its going to come and go before you can blink an eye.
Nymphs: rubberlegs, caddis, mays, red headed stepchild, amber princes,
Trinity River: Flows - 2750 cfs, 450cfs come 8/24 Clarity -  Clear Fishing - Good With the recent spike in flows it will be about a week till she is ready for fishing. But prior to the spike, the fishing was good for steelhead and even jack salmon. Prior to the spike we did see some fresh fish, and pods lower in the river, and with this spike its going to bring up even more. Its definitely time to get up there. I cant stop talking about this river, its becoming one that I guide more and more each year, and it keeps producing while others are not, sometimes not so easily, but thats what makes the Trinity so cool and fun to fish, you have to "Earn It". With that said its even fishing as I type. This is one of my favorite times of year on the Trinity, the lower flows make wading a breeze (8/24 flows hit 450), and there are not a ton of people on the river. Your typical half pounders can be found throughout the river system and the closer to the dam the more you will find. The halfies will put any 5wt rod to its test and while you can get a ton nymphing, these mini-chrome domes will eagerly take a dry or a swung fly, they are just a hoot. On the bigger note, strewn about in the river system are the early fall run fish that can range from 3-6lbs and some pushing 10lbs are caught this time of year as well. While nymphing once again will get you on a good number of fish, these early fish will talk swung flies likes its going out of style, they love skated flies too. If you are looking to swing from now till about mid Nov this is the river, and that is prime time to swing for chrome. If you are looking for something different, treat yourself to a guided trip down the Trinity River, you wont be disappointed with its beauty, solitude and over all fishing experience. Booking well in advance is highly recommended on the Trinity as my dates fill up fast, especially in the early season prior to December.
Dries: stones, caddis, hoppers, stimulators Nymphs: rubberlegs, stones, mays, caddis, pshyco princes, rubberleg copper johns Swinging: soft hackles, ho bo speys, Anderson's euphoria, Thalken's tiny dancer
My Available Dates: Sept - 8,29 Oct - 2,3,5,9,22,23,24,25,27,28,29 Please contact me for more available dates in 2017/2018
My Available Trinity Dates: August - 30,31 Sept - 1,2,3,4,5,6,11 Oct - 15,16,17,18,19,20 Please contact me for more available dates in 2017/2018
There you have it folks, despite what you may hear, I continue to say "Be The Report, Don't Believe The Report". Fishing is good right now, and fish to be had no matter what technique, style or species you would like to target. With few people on the water, having the river to yourself is a very good possibility, that will change once October comes. I'm really looking forward to the fall as the flows we have now should continue well into fall and late winter. The fall is looking better than ever and it will be here sooner than you think.
If you are thinking of a fall or winter trip, give me a call and lets go have some good times and tight lines.

Norther Sierra Fly Fishing Report
Jon Baiocchi Reports on 7.20.17
Tumblr media
When it rains it pours, after a long winter without a guide trip for four months, business is booming. The influx of emails, calls, and inquiries off the street has been overwhelming. Being a sole independent guide that does not rely on others to fill trips has been rewarding, and my hard work for the last 20 years guiding is not only paying off, but now has a high level of recognition throughout the state from my many years of experience. It’s all about pleasing my guest, giving it my all, and having a positive and enjoyable time. It’s about the total experience and exploring the great outdoors. I’ve been guiding in Eastern Plumas County mainly and here is the latest scoop. The Middle Fork Feather River is done in the upper watershed, and water temperatures are way up and poor to safely release resident trout. Carp and bass is the game there now, and the Portola area down to Gold Mountain has been producing. Below where Jamison Creek enters the MFFR has been good for smallish rainbows in the mornings and evenings, water temps are 63 to 68 degrees. There is a decent BWO spinner fall in the morning. A dry / dropper rig trailing a submerged spinner is an effective combo. Some yellow sallies are out, and a few caddis as well. The scouring from a heavy winter of precipitation and snow is evident. The occurring problem every Summer is the rock snot (didymo) that chokes the river out, as of now it’s getting a little thicker every day, it’s to the point that nymphing is too much work as one has to remove the slime after your fly bounces off the bottom. You thank all the golf courses in the area for such conditions. 20 years ago the didymo was pretty much nonexistent. America’s first Wild & Scenic River does not get any respect at all.
Tumblr media
I’ve been having the most fun guiding on Gray Eagle, Frazier, and Jamison creeks. My guests and I have yet to see another angler, but then again most won’t venture far off the path where the wild things are. Another reason is most anglers do not appreciate small wild trout, boulder hopping, and seeing the unique deep forests of Eastern Plumas County with its unique flora and Fauna. This is 2 to 3 weight action with bushy dry fly attractors, ants, and hoppers.  It’s just really fun fishing. My favorite set up is using a 7.5 foot leader and trialing a small flashy mayfly nymph, or a terrestrial 18 to 24 inches behind. The North Fork Yuba River is falling into shape nicely, though it could drop a little more as some runs are too swift. I fished it last week and anytime I found soft water I got some takes on both dries and nymphs.
Tumblr media
Overall the rivers in the general area have really come down. I’ll be creekin, guiding, and fishing the small water for the next 6 weeks, see you on the water… if you can find me.

Northern Sierra Fly Fishing Report
John Baiocchi Report on 7/6/2017
Tumblr media
The surge of Africa hot weather a few weeks ago and continued warmer weather has water temps at both Lake Davis and Frenchman’s Lake excessively high with surface temps reaching 74 degrees. Its game over until fall, releasing trout when the water is that warm usually means it’s their last fight. One option at Lake Davis though is targeting bass for the next few months, with so many submerged willows in the lake it offers ideal habitat for large mouths. It was a great spring at Frenchman’s, big numbers of Eagle Lake Rainbows to the net, and plenty of action while stripping or bobicating. One thing I learned is that this lake is primarily a chironomid factory. While there is usually a good callibaetis hatch in spring, it just did not materialize into a profuse situation. I’m hoping this coming September will be different as there can be some incredible dry fly fishing using emergers and adults to cruisers in the skinny water. The spring season at Lake Davis was fair. Anglers who caught near double digits had serious game and worked all damn day long with precision presentations and awareness. Management on the lake by DF&W will be changing next year with more catchables planted and no more fingerlings for the bass to eat. The lake has plenty of water, and the aquatic insects are thriving providing more than enough food which bodes well for the future. The callibaetis hatch this spring was so amazing, and there were a good number of damsels too. DF&W did plant last week, so that will help conditions this fall. Once populations increase in the future, look for Lake Davis to return to its legendary status.
Tumblr media
The Middle Fork Feather River is dropping into great shape, even below where Jamison creek dumps in at the Two Rivers access. Graeagle was a zoo this past weekend, I’ve never seen so many people before, and I lived there for 14 years. One tip is that you do not want to fish in town when you have higher than normal water conditions around the 4th. On Saturday we had 4 dozen people in rafts, kayaks, and inner tubes pass my guest and me, often floating 10 feet away and asking “Catch anything?” They put all the fish down for the day. It was better the next day down in the canyon with lots of takes on the dry / dropper rig. Water temps are 59 to 62 degrees. Hatches included golden stones, pmd’s, little green stones, yellow sallies, and a few caddis. All the fish in the past few weeks have been on the small side, but I’ve yet to huck a big heavy streamer into the depths of the bigger holes, and that will surly lure the big boys out from the darkness of the bottom. They are there. Evenings are starting to fish well with a solo dry fly imitating caddis and yellow sallies. I’m excited to see the river produce quality evening hatches like it used to. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen that. You can fish a certain section of water during the day with fair results, and that same section will come to life during the last few hours of light. Bring a headlamp to safely get back to your vehicle and watch out for mountain lions.
Tumblr media
I scouted the North Fork Yuba River again today and overall it has dropped a little. There are small sections within the bigger plunge pools of fishable water in select areas. Nymphing will be the way to go for the next 3 weeks, and hopefully by August 1st my guests and I will be hitting it on a daily basis with dry flies. It’s unbelievable how fast it is running, and there is still plenty of snow on the Sierra Buttes, and in the Lakes Basin area, as well as surrounding peaks. The 2017 season will be short for fishing this year, so make your plans now and fish it when it’s prime time.
Tumblr media
Observations of the natural world have been astounding! There is an explosion of dragonflies with multiple species patrolling the shorelines of lakes and the banks of rivers. The red darner and the 12 spotted skimmer seem to be the most prolific. Songbirds are at their peak and today on the MFFR there was an orchestra of sweet melodies coming from the thickets of streamside foliage. I was also lucky enough to see a few falcons in the canyon of Little Last Chance creek flying at Mach speeds too. Wildflowers continue to bloom and I’m seeing many varieties I’ve never seen before, or simply do not remember. My guests are always so blown away at the sheer beauty that the northern Sierra has to offer. An abundance of water will do many things to an ecosystem, it may temporally strip away aquatic life from a streambed, but overall it’s a very good thing to have. See you where the wild thin

Nor Cal Fly Fishing Report
Nor Cal Fly Guides Reports on 6.25.2017
Well this report comes to you a bit late, its not because of the great weather we have been having, but the great fishing we are having, but its better late then never. With the longest spring we have seen in years, getting out on local water has been a bit tough. Over the past few months almost all of my trips have been on the Lower Sac with a few on Putah. The Lower Sac has been fishing great whether it was at 5k,10k or 30k cfs, and Putah, well its Putah. With our local waters finally at fishable flows, its nice to be fishing close to home and on some good to great fishing. Summer is going to be good and our Fall should be great. So enough talking from me lets get onto the report.
American:
Flows: 6400
Clarity: Clear
Fishing: Good to Great
The AR has been a sight for long driving eyes as its been fishing great for both shad and stripers. Most of the shad fishing has been up top from Rosemore up, as well as the crowds. But if you can get out early, you will miss the crowds and be off before it gets to hot. Also there are some huge stripers cruising up top but getting them to eat is another story. My striper trips have been from Sunrise down for full days, and Gristmil down for half days, and boy has it been good. We are seeing a ton of shakers, and in the mix are plenty of 2-5lbers. The big fish unfortunately are stuffed with shad right now, but those smaller fish will keep you busy. We are having some good top water action too if you can get on early enough, and plenty of fish to go around whether a full or half day, 1 or 2 anglers. As the shad start leaving the river, the striper fishing will only get better. Best way to fish for stripers is on early off early, get your fix and beat the heat. No better time than now and the next few months. Time to get your 8wt bent.
Feather:
Flows: Low flow 2300, Total Flow 2500
Clarity: Clear
Fishing: Good to Great
Steelhead, striper and shad oh my, we have been having a few trifectas over the past 2 weeks, and its only getting better. Steelhead are thoughout the river system, but the further up you go the better it gets. Typically we are the only boat/anglers on the water, and the lack of fishing pressure truly shows, hitting a dozen steelhead ranging 14-20" is pretty easy right now, so hooking more is definitely likely. There are some bigger fish in the system as well, some pushing 8lbs, good luck landing these toads. On top of the steelhead fishing, we are even sticking a few stripers when targeted and a good number of shad too, it is the place to be right now. The river has definitely changed with the high water, and with it being 2300cfs in low flow, wade carefully. Fall is going to be sweet on this river and very busy, so as I always say, if you are looking to book a trip on the Feather, I highly recommend booking well in advance. "EGG BITE" will be here sooner than you think.
Nymphing has been the main game for steelhead, but getting them on the swing has been fun as well.
Yuba
Flows: 3700
Clarity: Perfect
Fishing: Fair to good
The Yuba is slowly coming back into shape, and is getting better every time I float it. As I have stated in past reports its the Newba and will take some anglers a bit of time to get use to how it looks, fishes and feels, but in due time, she will give it up. Not a lot of bug activity right now, but tell that to the fish. We are getting fish all throughout the water column, from on top to dredging deep, seems like the fish know what they want, "A well placed and drifter fly". My last trip on it we floated only a few (2) hours with clients and ended up hooking 6 fish, one being a 20" toad, but came unbottoned at the boat. When the flows get lower, this will be one sweet river. Until then, wade carefully as the river has changed a ton, and its not as shallow as before. With fall looming just around the corner if you are looking to book the "Egg Bite" on the Yuba, look to book sooner than later.
Nymphing is the main game, but throwing big bugs and swinging has produced a few fish as well.
Lower Sac
Flows: 10K
Clarity: Milky Green
Fishing: Good to Great depending on the day
The Lower Sac has kept every guide in Nor Cal including myself, in business and busy this year as it has been the only fishable water up to only a few weeks ago. Sometimes guiding it at 25-30k was needed, but now that its back down to 10k and its fishing extremely well. Big fish and a lot of fish will keep you busy throughout the day and some of the best fishing is just around the corner. The hotter the weather, the better it gets, so if you can bare the 100+ deg temps, you can plan on hooking a ton of fish. As you may know, the river is closed from Hwy 44 to the dam, and opens back up Aug 1st. This is great for the spring run kings, as well as the local trout up there, giving them all a break from the crazy, above normal pressure they have been seeing. Come Aug 1st if you are not on the water those first few weeks you are truly missing out. I highly recommending booking a day, 2 or even 3 during these first few weeks to experience the best fishing that you will ever have. Soon after fall will be here, and you know what that means, "EGG BITE", need I say more.
Nymphing is the way to go right now.
This is where I have been spending all of my time as of late, and will continue to do so. The fishing is not red hot, but its darn good, and is only getting better on a daily basis. If you are looking to finally wet a line and get bent, no better time than now.
If you are thinking that you want to wait till Fall, please dont wait till the last minute to book your fall trip, this year is going to be a busy one, probably the busiest yet, so book now while prime dates are available.

Sacramento Valley Fly Fishing Report
Hogan Brown reports on 3.2.17
Fishing has been tough but if you get out and look and the weather cooperates you can find some fishable water. For us north staters all the rivers are toast as most will report. I have heard that the Trinity and coast maybe opening up a bit but the Feather, Sac, Yuba are all pumping...I have been exploring our local bass lakes...Black Butte, East Park Reservoir, and Oroville After Bay. Fishing can be good but it can also be REALLY tough. The difference is usually the weather. A few days of stable weather and the bite opens up, pressure fronts and/or storms start moving through and things get tight. There is reaction bait type fishing and jig type fishing on any given days as well as float and fly fishing available so lots of options for the angler that can time the weather right.

Feather River Fly Fishing
Hogan Brown reports on 2.23.2017
All the rivers are still high and raging .... I have been getting out on the Oroville Afterbay for spotted bass and if the weather and conditions are timed right fishing can be decent. March and April are going to be reservoir and lake bass fishing I think for me for the most part. Oroville Afterbay, Clear Lake, Black Butte, Scotts Flat...smallies, spots, and largemouth ... Trying to time my days to stable weather, no fronts moving in, and warmer temps. Hopefully by Mid April I will be able to get out striper fishing on the Sac and Feather.

Lower Sac, Feather and Yuba River Fly Fishing Report
Hogan Brown reports on 2.9.17
I am not going to dress it up…there isn’t a lot going on fishing wise. The Sac, Feather, and Yuba are ripping and flooding in some areas with the latest rain and there is more rain to come…. Personally, I haven’t been out on the water in over a month. Some of my buddies and fellow guides have been getting some days in on the Coast steelhead fishing between storms, some have gotten a few days here and there on the Trinity, and there has been some windows to get out spotted bass fishing on Lake Oroville but I haven’t done any of those…….So what have I been doing well…tying flies, playing music, hanging out with family, working on Cast Hope stuff, making sourdough bread from scratch…indoor activities.
Cast Hope wise, I have been rounding up auction items for the Fly Fishing Show After Party and working on planning that event and a few other Big Events we have coming up this year…as these events grow they really require year round work, preparing, planning, and organizing. The After Party on Feb 25th is once again after the Fly Fishing Show in Pleasanton at Handles Gastro Pub in Old Town Pleasanton. 855 Main St. Pleasanton from 5-8:30pm. Tickets are $20 and include all the beer you can drink and Sliders and Wings. We will have a FULL Raffle (usually our best of the year) and a silent auction that is as good as any we host. Many of the auction items are already up on our website to bid on - http://www.casthope.org/events/auctions - There are trips to AK, Guided Trips, Rods, and Warriors Tickets up NOW to bid on.
The Yuba Jubilee is coming up February 18th, 2017 from 1-4pm at Hammon Grove on the Yuba River. The Jubilee will showcase guides, clubs, fly shops, environmental groups, and state agencies that all working hard to protect the wild populations of salmon, steelhead, and trout making the Lower Yuba River the best it can be. I will be there with my good buddy and fellow guide Chuck Ragan (http://crflyfishing.com.com) working the “Hogan Brown Fly Fishing” and “Cast Hope” booths. I will have free stickers and some schwag at both booths as well as some hand tied flies at my guide both for sale. I can’t think of the last time I have tied flies for sale so this is a special opportunity to get some of my patterns that are not in production as well as some that are. All reasonably priced…normal fly prices.
The Fly Fishing Show Feb 25th – I will be at the Cast Hope booth and if I have any flies left over I will have a few to sell or trade for various cool stuff…bobble heads, baked good, burned CD’s of moderate passed rock music, Americana, aka music I may like as…I will also be helping with the After Part mentioned above.

Lower Sac and Feather River Fly Fishing Report
Ryan Johnston reports on 1.5.17
Lower Sac - The Sac continues to fish average for winter conditions. Most days we are hooking 20ish rainbows from Redding down to Anderson. As typical we have been catching some true slugs out of the river this winter. Winter time we might not catch as many fish as the spring or the fall but if you are into hunting for big rainbows then it doesn't really get any better. With the majority of other rivers being blown out right now the Lower Sac is a good safe place to fall back onto. Hot flies recently have been beads and small mayflies. Flies like Hogan's SM, Lance's X-May, PTs, and Flatulators have all been catching fish. The best fishing is from Noon-3PM. So make sure that when you are out there that you fish smarter by being there during the prime hours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Feather - The Feather River opener happened on January 1st. So there is going to be some decent fishing to be had on the upper river near the hatchery over the next week. There isn't a ton of water to fish up there but if you spend a half day one can expect to hook 5-7 steelhead per morning. Eggs, Alevins, and small Mayflies will all do the ticket in fooling a few fish.
For anyone looking to get out I have the following days open over the next couple of weeks:
January 9-14, 16, 19-21, 23-24, 26-27
