the way the ship worked (for freshman cadets) was that you split time equally between engine side and bridge side . so you could see how both sides are run and could switch majors if you liked the other better. everyday your division would be assigned to training, maintenance, or watch and halfway through the voyage you switched to the other department. watch was when you were actually on the bridge running the ship (or the engine room…😒) and you’d have two four hours shifts with an eight hour break in between everyday. so my watch team stood watch from 0000-0400 and then 1200-1600 everyday we were assigned. there were about 8 freshman positions on the bridge and then every hour you’d swap positions unless you are sam in which case you would get left on helm for FOUR HOURSSS . anyway half the freshman positions was just a lookout where you stood and reported anythinggg out at sea (we had one for bow stern port and starboard) then we had two on security rounds (WHICH WAS MISERABLE you had to go through the entire ship to make sure nothing was going wrong) then radar and charging stations had freshman helpers then finally there was one poor soul on helm. most teams had 8 freshman 4 sophomores 4 seniors and then one actual officer overseeing everything. anyway we were underway for 52 days and had an extra week where we were living on the ship loading all our supplies…. our next boats get isn’t till next APRIL im so mad. i love talking about this stuff. if you couldn’t tell so if you’re ever curious what it’s like… i love to share info ❤️
