This is Jewel. She’s 4 years-old and sponsored by Lynn Richardson. SNAP Cats rescued Jewel from Merced, CA. Jewel is just that: a real jewel. She’s the first kitty to greet you when you come in the room, and won’t let you leave until she gets your attention, plenty of pets and everything that goes along with that. Jewel gets along great with the other kitties, so she’d be fine in a home with other cats.
BTW: Please don't be afraid of FIV. It's nothing. Really. Slightly compromised immune system. That's it. Just like a FIV- cat, Jewel will live a long, healthy life if you take good care of her. Jewel's not aggressive toward other cats so there's no chance of her transmitting it.
If you’re interested in Jewel please fill out an adoption application at https://www.snapcats.org/category/adoption/catsforadoption/. Thanks.
SNAP Cats uses Smart Cat, all natural cat litter.

this is my sweet baby boy, Noodles

he just passed tonight. he was just about 5 years old, we beleive he had FIV due to circumstances and past issues, but he was never diagnosed. he died somewhat unexpectedly.
hes always been curious, always loved to play with or smell what I had, especially if it came from outside my room. unfortunately, he was always too skittish to see the world on his own. he stayed in my room constantly for the 4 years I had him.
now that he's gone, I come to you tumblr, to ask you to do him a favor.
please reblog this so he can reach the world.
please reblog this with pictures of your favorite things, your pets, your favorite places, even if it's just a tree in your back yard.
reblog it with nothing if you have no pictures or places you want him to see.
show him your favorite places.
thank you.

I'm so sorry your kitty is sick, im glad its back with you (cuddles and love!). This ask is mostly directed to your followers cause I just know some people are thinking the wrong thing.
The better term to use for cat AIDs would be FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus). So—For the people getting the wrong idea, no! Bunni's cat did NOT get it from humans, nor can it be transfered to other species— it's biologically impossible. FIV acts like HIV and attacks the immune system, you might also hear it be called cat HIV.
Similar ≠ Same
- 🐇
Yes, this is all correct! My vet(I live in the south) personally called it cat aids(most likely to help us better understand what it was) so that’s the term I’ve been using!
We have two other cats that have also been bitten in the past(we DID use to let them outside, but stopped once we were informed about the dangers of letting them out). Our vet said because they were bitten, they most likely also have FIV.
He said that there’s probably an outbreak among the strays, and that’s how they got it.
I would get them individually tested but it’s $160+ per test. For us, that’s a lot of money and our vet said it’s unnecessary because the likelihood of them having it is very high.
I personally would like to test and possibly rehome any of our cats that don’t have it… but that’s not a possibility for us rn. Sad, but that’s the truth of the situation.
This is why it is imperative to keep your cats indoors and I will always be an advocate for that. Not only can they get run over, attacked, or infected with disease, but cats can also become a public nuisance. They eat native wildlife, attack other cats and get them sick, and so much more.
Kittens are born on the street, sickly and dying of disease. Baby kittens, barely old enough to have babies of their own become mothers during their first heat. We have a terrible stray problem, I see kittens that have been run over everywhere.
I would like to start some kind of program to TNR(trap, neuter, release), but I don’t know where to start. Our town has no funds, and northern Louisiana SUUUCKS!
Anyways… spay, neuter, and keep your cats inside unless you take them outside wearing a harness/or have an enclosed space for them like a cattio!!

Apricot - (Main House)
Ending the day with some Apricot snuggles! ✨🥰
Apricot was brought to our shelter from a group that was trapping and rescuing stray cats. Apricot most likely spent most of his 8 years of life as a stray on the streets. That’s where he probably contracted FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus). He was also exposed to a lot of fighting and natural elements. This combo likely caused damage to his ears (called ‘Cauliflower Ear’). While it doesn’t affect his hearing at all, it’s left him with folded over ears and an adorable appearance. 🥰 Apricot is such a sweet man who deserves the fluffiest of beds to lounge away the days in! 🥹💕

This is my friend's cat, Dukat. He is a sweet rescue cat that has been with her a while now. Hew has been unable to eat much and is rapidly losing weight. He needs all of his teeth removed. If you are able to throw a few dollars this way, it would really help them. They have been saving and hopefully have some charity help, but still need some more.

Enough Black Cat Slander!!
I'm convinced that people who have said that black cats are bad luck and are mean have never interacted with a black cat in their life. I have one, and he is a big dumb stupid baby boy who wants nothing more than to be held and be given kisses all over his big dumb stupid silly face. You could spend hours annoying him and he wont growl or hiss or ANYTHING! He only knows be silly, and be cute and friendly.
If I'm going to do something, that becomes a group activity because he HAS to be there. If I leave the room after like 5 minutes and he can't follow, he starts to yell until I return. He loves to be picked up and carried everywhere, and if I had one of those baby slings I think he would simply die of happiness. I'll be working on a project, and he'll slowly inch his way onto my lap and push it away, and if I relocate him because I need to get work done, he just does it again until I give in and give him the snuggles he wants.
Statistically black cats are usually the hardest cat to get adopted from a shelter, and some shelters will flat out refuse to take in black cats because of their low adoption rate. Meaning, a black cat is statistically more likely to spend their entire life in a shelter, and are more likely to be euthanized because of that fact. That's not even taking into account that because of their reputation they are more likely to be abused and killed by others who are superstitious of them.
Outside of their unfair treatment, here are additional reasons to adopt them!
Research has shown they are less likely to get sick, and have a stronger resistance to viruses like Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (Commonly referred to as FIV) which is permanent, contagious, and can be deadly since it slowly destroys their immune system.
You have a miniature house panther.
You'll save a life (theirs).
So next time you go to adopt a cat from a shelter or pick one from a litter of kittens, please consider adopting a black cat.

I got this baby from a catch and release shelter I volunteered for a bit at back in 2016, and bringing him home has been one of the best decisions of my life. Dipper is just so good, and every other black cat I've ever been around has been the biggest sweetheart ever. Think of silly orange cat brain power mixed with an incredibly cuddly and loving baby. He has 2 younger sisters, and has accepted them each the second they enter the house, even defending them (especially the youngest who is blind) right out the gate if they start to get spicy with the other sister.
Anyways, this has been my TedTalk on why black cats are the best and deserve a better reputation than they have.

Pony…..^.^. (Black and white). and Brady. (Grey and white). .^.^.
Both of these cats have FIV.
Both are at the Lakeshore Humane Society
FIV or Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. 🦠 When I first learned about it people were calling it Feline AIDS. It’s a virus that attacks a cat’s immune system making them vulnerable to secondary infection. When I first started volunteering about 20yrs ago cats with this disease were often put down. They probably still are in some shelters that can take the time to test their cats. Shelters like Lakeshore, Chautauqua county, and 10 lives club, shelters near ish to me, adopt these cats out. There really isn’t much difference between FIV and healthy cats.
FIV is common among outdoor cats, especially intact ones. This is because the disease is spread through deep bites and intact cats are more likely to fight. Rarely do kittens get infected from their mothers. Cats can share water bowls and the like without transmission.
Cats with FIV can live just as long as non infected cats unless they get a secondary infection, especially if that infection is Feline leukemia. When cats have symptoms it may be a fever, swollen lymph nodes, inflammation of the mucus membranes, sometimes cancer, infections, diarrhea, and queens may miscarry. Most infected cats are intact males which makes sense.
There is no cure and humans can’t get it.

CAT UPDATE

SHE IS OFFICIALLY MY CAT!!!!!!!!!!
Also I just got back from the vet and here’s some info about her:
About 4 years old
Currently 7.7 pounds, should be around 8.5
Breed is probably domestic medium hair
FIV positive, so she can never be around other cats, but she’s in the intermediate stage and otherwise healthy so she should live a full life span!
I love her. Very important.
And also look at this adorable cat tree I got for her

Miss Terri - (Cottage Kid)
Good morning! No, you’re not seeing double 😂 I had to save the best for last! Meet Miss Terri, the last Cottage resident I have yet to introduce (at the moment 😂)
Miss Terri has been at the shelter for several years, so I don’t know the details of her story. But I know where I can get them and will be sure to report back as soon as I do! What I do know about Miss Terri, is that she is FIV positive. FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) is not transferable to humans, but causes poor Miss Terri’s immune system to be a bit weaker than an FIV negative cat’s. This means she’s more susceptible to illness and disease, and takes a bit longer to recover from them. We keep her separate from the rest of the Cottage Kids to try and minimize her illness exposures, and protect them against contracting FIV (which is through deep bites usually caused by fighting, and other ways). She suffers from frequent Upper Respiratory Infections, which we’ve treated with multiple vet visits and medications. The poor thing is just permanently congested 😪😭 Most recently, she was treated for a double ear infection and the medication left her head oily and greasy. So join me as I give Miss Terri a little spa day! 🧖♀️ 😻
