ANDREI SVECHNIKOV - HATE HATE HATE
Tumblr media
Written for @comphy-and-cozy sorry if it was a bitt late. My editing for chapters take awhile, especially if working on other stuff. I decided to cut this up, as it didn't make sense to put another scene I've written with this one. Thank you @jackhghes for helping me to semi edit this. I'm horrible at editing and it probably would take me a whole month to edit this. Also, very sorry about the delay. My ADHD just distracts me all the time, but when's not a good time to release this then now! Also for the part about reader not thinking much into it or acting on it. It's because I kinda wanted this to be a semi-slow burn, where reader is oblivious.
TW: the reader gets drugged (nobody knows, so we just say we drank a lot), drinking, reader is very depressed but is fine later on, sexual tension (briefly). Words marked with this font mean it's a flashback. People included in flashbacks will be a key part in later chapters :) Word Count: 4k? 3k? Idk.
CHAPTER 1 - Hatred
Hatred…
That’s one word you thought you would never use. Except, of course, for the times when you were younger when you would say it to your siblings when they were being annoying or making you angry, but you never meant it.
You didn’t know you were capable of hating someone so much until you met Andrei Svechnikov.
As soon as you met the Russian, you were already certain that the two of you would have little chance of getting along. You hated his arrogant behaviour and his ‘I don't care’ attitude. You usually didn’t mind when people were arrogant and had big egos; growing up, you had to encounter that a lot between your siblings. You didn’t remember much growing up, only that you were raised in Finland before you decided to move. Although it's difficult for you to recall specific memories from your time in Finland, they frequently come back to you when your siblings bring them up. Your favourite memory that constantly comes back to you is when you and your brother both learned how to skate at the same time. You both instantly got the hang of it. You had always wished that your parents could have afforded hockey lessons for both of you, but unfortunately, they could only afford to pay for one of you at a time. You decided to let your brother play hockey and wait until they could afford the lessons for you. However, by the time they were able to pay for you, you had already lost interest in playing hockey. Your love for skating and hockey did not go away, but you figured that because it had been so long since you last played, you weren't very good at it anymore. As a result, you decided to stop playing and concentrate on your studies instead. When you reached maturity, you found that you enjoyed skating more than you had in your younger years, and as a result, you chose to enroll in figure skating classes. You didn't have to necessarily turn professional; even if you weren't the best, you could still find fulfillment in what you were doing.
The day your brother got drafted into the NHL was probably the best day of your guys life. You were very proud of your brother, but also upset that he would be leaving and you wouldn’t be able to hang out with him as much anymore. The day you got a green card and were finally permitted to live in the United States forever was the most exciting day of your life. Your brother made a quick offer to live with him, and you agreed instantly. You didn’t want to agree initially and said you’d find somewhere, but you made the decision a few days later to live with your brother after you couldn’t find a place. You moved in with him shortly after you got to the United States and got settled into your new home.
You were very glad that you were able to live with your brother. It wasn’t like you could live without your brother’s help, but both of you guys were so used to spending time together and being together that it only made sense that you guys would live together growing up.
You didn’t mind living with your brother at the start, but when it turned into months, it was more annoying than ever. You didn’t think it was your brother that was specifically annoying; it was the friends he brought over. He always had you introduce yourself to his friends; you didn’t mind some of his friends, especially the ones that weren’t his teammates. It was his teammates that you were most annoyed about. You didn’t want to introduce yourself to them since you could never see yourself being friends with any of them.
Tumblr media
There’s always multiple parts that come with missing someone. One being is waiting, and the other is loneliness and quietness. You never expected you’d be waiting for your brother to return home from his trip with his friends in Sweden. You never expected the loneliness and quietness that came with him being gone. You were definitely used to it when he was on road-trips with his team, but he would always come home eventually. The days you wait eventually turn into a few months. You didn’t even know it was July until you got a text from your brother saying, “Happy 4th of July.” It wasn’t like you were just sitting at home all day; you did go outside from time to time, but you had no motivation to do anything else beyond that.
You have never experienced this before. You knew it was bad for your general health and body, but you were just tired and exhausted all the time. It wasn’t like you were eating unhealthy as well. You just didn’t go outside much and slept for most of the day. It ended up with you getting fired because of it, but you didn’t care. You disliked your job anyway, and you knew it was only a matter of time before you got the call that you were fired and when you got it. You weren’t surprised at all, only replying with an ‘Okay’ before hanging up.
Today was no different from any other day. You decided to watch Netflix and just chill in bed all day. You were probably just going to order a pizza or something since you haven’t had it for awhile and you weren’t in the mood to really cook today. You were so wrapped up in your TV show that you didn’t pay any attention to the commotion downstairs. Even if you did pay attention to it, you were way to tired to go downstairs anyways. It was most likely your friends coming over to check up on you.
“Yeah, you could just put it in my room for the time being.” The voice echoed through the hallways. You heard the voices travel to the living room before dying out. You didn't find it particularly interesting to pay attention to it, so you chose to bring your focus back to the show. After hearing your brother's room open, you finally made up your mind to pay attention to the ruckus that was going on. You waited for a bit, just listening. It wasn’t until you heard footsteps coming from his room that you stood up straight away, and nothing else was going through your head except irritation. You made it very clear to your friends that they were not to enter your brother's room. You didn’t even go in there. It was His room, Nobody else’s. You were just about to go into his room, but a voice made you stop in your tracks. It sounded oddly familiar… too familiar. You heard that voice growing up. You muttered an inaudible ‘no way’ under your breath. There’s ‘no way’ you constantly repeat those words over and over. He wasn’t supposed to be back until August. It's all just in your head, right?
It was then that the door to your brother's room opened. It wasn’t your brother, though. It was the Russian you only met briefly; your brother called him Andrei; you never talked with him before; you only introduced yourself to each other before engaging in conversations with others.
“Like something you see, milyy?” There was no mistaking the inquisitiveness behind that smirk of his as he spoke.
You never heard the word ‘milyy’ and even if you didn’t know the meaning. You decided then and there that you hated the word, regardless of the meaning it holds. “Don’t call me that, and thanks, but no, I don’t. I’ve seen better.” You smiled as you watched the smirk slowly disappear. "Sure, milyy whatever you say.” His voice was rolling to a whisper as he approached you, inches away from your face. “You definitely wouldn’t be saying that soon.” His smirk reappeared as he stepped away, watching you. You couldn’t help the redness on your face after he said that. Your throat going dry immediately. “I would rather die than ever date you.” You bit back the irritation in your voice, trying to be respectful and not let it show that the comment effected you like it did.
“Keep saying that. We both know it’s not true.” He said, walking away, before adding, “Your brother is looking for you.”
If you weren’t shocked before, you’re definitely shocked now. When you first saw Andrei, a part of you kind of suspected that your brother was already at home, but the realization didn't fully hit you until now. You pay little attention to the previous sentences and are just focusing on the fact that your brother is at home. You nervously head downstairs, multiple voices seemingly bouncing off the walls until it just goes quiet. Your mind going blank, shutting out all the other voices. The only one you cared about hearing was your brother’s. “Hey sis.” Sebastian said, already pulling you into a hug. The warmth of the hug made you feel safe and happy. A feeling you haven’t felt since he’s been gone.
“I missed you, Seb.” You mumbled low enough that only he could hear. You didn’t need any of his teammates laughing, especially Andrei.
It seems like eternity, but when you both pull away, you’re smiling something that you’ve refused to do for awhile.
“I missed you too, sis. Sorry for being gone for a while.” Seb says this before pulling away.  Andrei cuts in. “Sorry for ruining this reunion, but we really should be getting going. The boys wouldn’t be happy to wait any longer.”
“Wait what.” You ask, confusion hitting you. “Where are you going? You can’t just leave; you-”
It was like your brother could instantly sense the sadness in your tone. Because he was quick to reassure you. “We are just going to the club. You are welcome to come with us if you'd like.”
You give a nod. “Okay, I’ll come, I guess.”
“We ain’t going to babysit you all night. If you want to go home, we ain’t leaving to drive you.” Andrei said abruptly he didn’t even wait for a response before he left, probably to start up the car.
You decided at this very moment..
You hated Andrei Svechnikov. You usually don’t go out clubbing; the last time you did, it was with one of your friends. It was an experience that you never wanted to experience again. It wasn’t bad in any way, but it was the fact that your friends all left with somebody, and you were left all by yourself.
Tumblr media
“Come onnnn!” Kimberly said. She’s been trying to convince you for hours now to come with her and Lena to the club. “I don’t know.. I don’t have anything to wear.”
Kimberly opened your closet like she already knew the answer. She sorted through your clothes before deciding on a few she liked. "Here, look! Here's some that’ll look good on you.” You glance at the clothes before turning away with disgust. “I’d rather stick to jeans or something.” Kimberly's smile turned into a frown. “Alright, then how about this?" She showed you a few more options before you decided on an outfit.
You made the decision to dress down for the occasion by donning some jeans and a tank top. You chose to wear something that would be comfy, even if it is not what the majority of people would wear out, because you weren't really in the mood to go to begin with. You weren't typically choosy about the clothes you wore, but there are certain items that you either don't want to wear in public or you just aren't really feeling in the mood to wear at the moment. - - -
You were unable to recall much of what happened after that. All you can think of is how badly you wanted to leave...
Escape…
“Leave her alone.” A voice spoke from behind you as the laughter of the guys around you died down. You didn’t bother looking at who said that. You just got up, pushing through the crowded room, trying to look around for your friends, but to your luck,  they were nowhere in sight.
You felt your chest tighten, and it was harder to breathe by the minute. Your whole body felt dizzy.
You didn’t remember anything after that, but somehow you made it back home safe.
Tumblr media
There wasn’t much conversation during the car ride. You just mainly focused on your phone, unless you asked if they could skip songs you didn’t like. Thankfully, they didn’t complain; you really didn’t want to argue with Andrei about something as dumb as music.
Once you made it inside, you quickly made an introduction to a few of your brother’s friends, who all rode in different cars together. You knew a few, but it wasn’t any of the friends you usually had conversations with and enjoyed talking to. You made your way to the bar, telling the bartender what you’d like to get - on the rare occasion when you do decide to leave the house.
You made the hasty decision to go to the bathroom, hoping that your drink would be ready by the time you arrived back. You thought that if the bartender saw you leaving, that he would hopefully put your drink to the side or at least look after it. If you weren’t back in time.
It was once again the worst decision you could’ve ever made.
When you immediately returned to your spot, you found your drink already there. You weren’t too long in the bathroom, so you just made a guess that it was just made. You took a few sips.
“Is that what you usually order?” A random guy who happened to be in front of you asked.
“Yeah. I don’t drink that much, so this is the only thing I’ve tried.” I laughed slightly.
He gave a chuckle back. “I’m the same. I only like a few drinks, most of which my friends actually offered me to try. I’m way picky with my choice of drinks, so I only stick with a few I like.”
You nodded, smiling slightly. It was good to finally have a normal conversation with someone, and this guy seemed nice. You gave a quick look around. Your brother was nowhere to be found, but you did spot Andrei. He was already staring right at you, and he seemed pissed about something. You rolled your eyes. He’s always got to be mad about something; he can never be happy.
You moved your attention back to the guy in front of you. “What’s your name?”
“Tyler.”
You extended your hand to shake it as you said your name as well. Out of nowhere, you felt your head start to pound. “It’s loud in here, ain’t it?” You say, once again chuckling. You brushed it off, stating it was merely because there was loud music playing.
“Are you feeling okay?” Tyler asked, his fingers going out to softly touch your back.
It was somewhat relaxing; you couldn’t lie. You would never allow any stranger to touch you at all, yet the kindness and the gentle touches made you feel somewhat better, and you liked it. “Uh yeah. Wanna go dance?”
He had no chance to speak as you took his arm, lightly tugging on it as you led the way.
After that, everything started to happen all at once. There was no apparent cause for the sudden sensation of lightheadedness and dizziness that came on suddenly. To prevent yourself from falling down, you had to maintain a firm hold on Tyler. When he inquired, "Are you okay?" you opened your mouth to respond, but no words materialized in your mind.
The last thing you heard was Andrei’s voice.
Then it went black.
Tumblr media
You let out a low grunt. It felt as though a thousand bricks were being thrown at your back. You muttered to yourself that this would be the last time you ever drank. You opened your eyes, and although it took a moment for your vision to clear, you immediately realized that you were home, safe, and in bed.
The headache that you had been experiencing prior to this was, of course, was still present. You were in a terrible mood. You had no idea how you got home. You didn’t feel like getting up at all… You just wanted to sleep, and hopefully the next time you wake up, it wouldn’t feel like this.
The next time you woke up, you were in bed. You checked the time on your phone. The brightness of it makes your eyes fully open. It was 9:27am. You groaned. It was too early, and you didn’t feel like getting out of bed. You took a few minutes to try to fall back asleep, but all the attempts were unsuccessful, so you eventually decided to give up and get up.
The headache that you previously had seemed to pass over during your sleep. Thank gosh. You really didn’t want to have to experience that throughout the day. You quickly shower and get changed into fresh clothes. You didn’t remember much about last night, only that you met this guy and that your brother disappeared for most of the night. You were definitely going to bother him about that later on.
Right, now you were starving. You head towards the kitchen, quickly grabbing an apple before making your way towards the living room. You planned for this day to just be a relaxing day. However, as soon as you glared at the couch, you rolled your eyes.
Andrei was already awake; he was on his phone, listening to something on his headphones. As soon as he saw you, though, he took them off. "Are you okay, milyy?” He asked, sounding worried but not making any moves to get up.
You rolled your eyes. Why does everyone ask that? Of course you were okay. You would certainly know if you weren’t. You walked over silently, asking if you could sit here. He seemingly got the message and gave a nod of approval. “Uh. What happened to my brother? The last time I saw him, he was having drinks, and the next he was nowhere to be seen.” “Tony took him to his place. He had too much to drink. He said they were planning on hanging out later today, so he thought it would be easier to take him to his place.”
You couldn't help but laugh; that was so typical of your brother. It is impossible for him to control his drinking; after only a few sips, he becomes extremely inebriated. "Oh, well, that's not good at all. I should have known from the beginning that he was not a good drinker.
Andrei grinned again. You already knew what this meant. He was probably going to say something stupid to embarrass you. “Last night, it looked like you didn’t handle it well either. Compared to him, you were actually much worse.”
What do you mean by that? " I only had one drink.” You were more confused than ever. There’s no way. You've had numerous drinks before, and it’s never been so bad that you couldn’t recall how you got home. You just assumed that you ordered yourself an Uber and went home, or that your brother drove you.
“Milyy… I drove you home. Do you remember?” Andrei questioned. You shook your head in disbelief. “No? I just thought my brother drove me home or that I ordered an Uber.”
Andrei started to explain what happened, as you did your best to tell him what you already remembered so he could explain what transpired there. You were never this embarrassed until this moment. As he explained, you began to remember most of what happened.
Tumblr media
“I got you, milyy.” Andrei said his arms were wrapped around you to hold you steady so you didn’t fall. “It’s okay, baby. Let’s get you outside, okay?” You nodded; you felt sick, and the heaviness in your head wasn’t stopping.
“Can you take me to your place?” “No, milyy. I’m taking you home.” The strictness in his tone had you squirming.
You pouted; this was so unfair. You didn’t want to go home. You wanted him to take you to his place. “Ok, but I want you to take me to your home. I want to be in your bed.”
Andrei ignored your comment as he led you outside in the cold air; it felt amazing against the hotness of your skin. You loved it. You closed your eyes. This was so relaxing.
The next thing you remembered was being in Andrei’s car; he was quick to turn on the A/C due to your request. You mumbled thanks before staring out the window.
“Why don’t you like me?”
The question that came from you was so out of nowhere. You knew it, but you didn’t care.
“I do, milyy.” Andrei reassured you, his hand just slightly brushing against yours. “Then why wouldn’t you want to fuck me?” You already felt tears coming down. Were you not good enough for him? Did he not like you? You didn’t understand. The question made him immediately silent. He didn’t even give you an answer right away.  After a brief time of being silent, he replied “I’m not interested.”
Tumblr media
That’s at least what he told you. You shouldn’t care, really. It wasn’t like you guys were ever going to be a thing. You hated him, and he hated you. It was obvious, even if he said he didn’t.
“I’m sorry that I said that, but yeah. I’m not interested either. It was just the alcohol talking, not me.” You laugh, attempting to release the mood.
It’s seemingly worked because Andrei laughed with you.
“Alright, well, I’m just going to head out. Seb asked me to see if you were alright in the morning.” Andrei said, not allowing you to respond before he was already gone.
You were left feeling confused. He lied. You knew exactly what he said. It was constantly repeating in your head. “You hate me, milyy. As much as I do. Trust me, if you weren’t out of it right now. I’d give you everything you want.”
You brushed it off, assuming he may have just had a few too many drinks as well.
Right?
You didn’t see Andrei for a month after that. You were very grateful, and you seemed to forget all about that night. You wish it could’ve stayed like this. You knew it wouldn’t last long until your brother was once again bringing his teammates over. You didn’t mind, and you even joined them when they started to play a few games.
You decided to drink once again, but only because you knew your brother wouldn’t leave again. Plus, it was in your own home. If you didn’t feel good, you could easily just go lay down. The night had been going well until Andrei had to ruin it.
“I’d be careful if I were you. You wouldn’t want to drink too much like last time, right, little one?”
“Why? Don’t you want to hear me ask you to fuck me? Oh right, I forgot we both aren’t interested, so I know that wouldn’t happen.” You smiled; you weren’t drinking a lot this time only having small sips, so you knew exactly what you said. It was only to piss him off, and it worked perfectly. Because he shut right up after that.
You hummed in amusement before you made your way to where your brother was, joining him in whatever game they were playing. You felt Andrei's eyes staring at you every now and then, and you couldn’t help but smile every time you looked at him. He deserved it.
If Andrei expected you to just listen to whatever he had to say without saying anything back, he was very wrong. You hated him, and you were going to make that very clear.

Considering this (in a vague way) for possibly late this autumn or early next year, if work, money and local (COVID-adjacent) circumstances permit: the sleeper from Hamburg to Stockholm. Possibly then connecting to a ferry service to Finland. Who can say?...

Quote
[News Story] 10:15am A Successful Operation - Lessons Learned Another time can talk about Israel’s current policy on Gaza, what’s right and wrong about it, but for now I want to focus on what we accomplished and what we exposed in this round of fighting in Operation Shield and Arrow. Speaking of which, I first want to point this out from 2 Melachim 19:32, as people were wondering why they didn't call it Operation Bow and Arrow, since it started on Lag B'Omer. "Assuredly, thus said the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: He shall not enter this city: He shall not shoot an  arrow  at it, Or advance upon it with a  shield, Or pile up a siege mound against it." That happened to be the Perek Yomi on the day the campaign started, in Project 929 – so either someone’s been learning their Tanach, or God has a funny sense of humor, or both. The most obvious accomplishment was the successful policy/strategy change of returning to targeted assassinations of senior terrorists – but this time with reduced concern for collateral damage relative to the increased value of the target and the threat to Israel. It can’t be overstated how important a change in both strategy and policy this is. With the Biden administration exerting so little influence in the Middle East these days and Biden’s ongoing boycott of Netanyahu, that might have been what allowed this to happen and caused a permanent loosening of the reins. Perhaps this is a next step towards being prepared to indiscriminately carpet bomb the enemy in response to them attempting to carpet bomb us. One can hope. While Islamic Jihad found itself in the position of having no choice but to replace their senior commanders every few hours in the midst of a war – or surrender, Israel sent an unequivocal message to Hamas that they’re going to have to start living in bunkers by themselves, like Hassan Nasrallah does, and even that won’t save them. We proved that Israel can find their terrorist leaders, no matter where they’re hiding. Like whack-a-mole, we might have to wait a bit, but we’ll get them. You can bet they’re scared. We exposed another Hamas weakness. Hamas was pushing hard for Islamic Jihad (who take orders from Iran) to accept the ceasefire. Why? Because Gaza was running out of fuel for their generators. And Hamas, when not in a war that they initiate, is now concerned about maintaining order and control on a day-to-day basis, and that includes keeping the electricity running. More confirmed leverage to us during conflict and non-conflict periods. Israel recently sold the David’s Sling anti-missile system to Finland for $345 million USD. David’s Sling has now been combat-tested and proved to be successful in real-world conditions. It’s value just jumped, and we have Iran and Islamic Jihad to thank for that. Some problems with Iron Dome were discovered and fixed.  Unfortunately, an elderly woman was killed when a (regular) rocket got through from the many hundreds of rockets shot at us, and a Gazan man working in Israel was killed by shrapnel from an Islamic Jihad rocket. It is clear we need the Iron Beam laser system up and running already for when the big war happens. And even the IAF pilots, which you have to admit, not everyone was 100% sure we could still trust and rely on, came through in the end. And that was also an important message sent to our enemies who definitely thought our pilots couldn’t be relied on anymore. We presumably learned more about the Iranian missiles they shot at us. While there was much criticism about letting Aviv Gefen run a live concert with tens of thousands of people in Tel Aviv while missiles were being launched at Tel Aviv… let’s face it, Israel was able to permit a live concert in Tel Aviv with tens of thousands of participants while rockets were literally being launched at Tel Aviv. Think about that for a moment and what that means. The last question is, are there lessons here for our upcoming battle with Hamas? In some ways it will just be a matter of scale when it comes to the number of missiles and their range. Though in other ways, Hamas is more serious, and they surely have other tactics and strategies in place that Islamic Jihad doesn’t – including underwater units which we didn’t see at all in this operation, drones, terror tunnels, fire balloons, anti-aircraft and anti-tank missiles, tank-traps, other stuff we can’t predict, and most seriously, a more established terror network in Judea and Samaria, so we would find ourselves simultaneously fighting on a second front. But on that last point, while it wasn’t discussed that much, the IDF was simultaneously running successful operations in Judea and Samaria during this operation and killed a number of terrorists there too, so our side clearly recognizes the linkage and has been preparing for it.

The new government's programme includes the introduction of a citizenship test as part of its plans to tighten the requirements for obtaining Finnish citizenship or permanent residence in Finland.
In its programme for government published last month, Finland's right-wing ruling coalition said it plans to introduce a citizenship test as part of efforts to tighten rules around the granting of permanent residence and citizenship permits.
"Passing a citizenship test and a language test will be made a requirement for naturalisation," the programme states.
The Finnish citizenship test will be modelled on similar evaluations used in other European countries.
Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen (Finns) told Yle that her ministry has started work on drafting the citizenship test, but the process will take time.
Examples from across Europe
Among the EU's 27 countries, nearly half — or 13 — currently have a citizenship test. They include the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Hungary and Estonia.
In addition, Norway, Switzerland and Liechtenstein — which are not members of the EU but are part of the Schengen area — also have a citizenship test.
In general, the tests feature questions about the history, culture, society and population of the host country. The assessments may also ask about living in a democracy and other aspects of a particular country's politics, such as in Estonia and Greece, or about the country's national anthem, as in Latvia.
In each country, the test is organised by an official body.
Rantanen previously told tabloid Ilta-Sanomat that the exams could be organised by community colleges, for example.
From multiple choice quizzes to interviews
In an interview with Yle soon after taking office, Rantanen said that her ministry will perform a "u-turn" on immigration and refugee policies during her term, and she reiterated that position this week.
"I am glad that we are reaching the pan-Nordic level, and that we will not be the only country in the Nordic region with lax rules," she said.
Among the Nordic countries, the citizenship test is used in Denmark and Norway.
The Danish test has 45 multiple-choice questions about the country's society, culture and history — 35 of which are based on provided study material while 5 questions deal with topical issues taken from Danish media and politics. There are also five questions on Danish values.
At least 36 correct answers are needed in order to pass the Danish test. In addition, they must correctly answer at least four of the 10 questions that are not included in the study material.
The citizenship test in Norway has 36 questions, of which 24 must be correct. Norwegian authorities also offer the option of completing a social studies course (75 hours) with a final exam in Norwegian.
Luxembourg also provides the option of taking a social studies course instead of the citizenship test.
In Slovakia, there is no formal citizenship test but the required language test does ask basic information about the country.
Study material helps participants
In almost every European country where a citizenship test is mandatory, participants are provided with study material.
In Spain, the test consists of 25 multiple-choice questions selected from a list of 300, which can be practised in advance with an app.
The tests are also often multiple-choice, although one notable exception to this is France, where the 'test' is conducted as an interview.
In Europe, the citizenship test is often multiple-choice, but one exception is France, where the exam is conducted as an interview. Study material is also provided.
In addition to the citizenship test, each country has other conditions which must be met if the applicant is to receive citizenship or a permanent residence permit — such as a certain income threshold.
Although Austria has no citizenship exam, people applying for citizenship or permanent residence must have lived continuously in the country for at least 10 years and prove their intentions to stay.
Rantanen noted that the proposed citizenship test is also intended to help speed up integration into Finnish society.
"The idea is for people to integrate into Finland, to learn our language and our social system. With integration, the citizenship and language tests should not prove to be too difficult," Rantanen said.
Citizenship test previously proposed in 2019
The possibility of Finland introducing a citizenship test has been mooted before.
In 2019, then-Interior Minister Kai Mykkänen (NCP) presented a package of measures he said was aimed at preventing and combating crimes committed by foreign-background individuals, especially sexual offences.
The draft bill at the time stated that "the practices of other countries in the use of citizenship tests will be studied and a test suitable for Finland will be introduced".
However, the citizenship test was not advanced during the following government's term in office.

There is a richness and a depth to each of Kjell Ola Dahl’s novels that is present irrespective of whether they form part of his contemporary eight volume Oslo Detectives series or his standalone novels such as The Courier and The Assistant which feature a greater historical slant. His writing is truly immersive, and in The Lazarus Solution, the setting is summer 1973, largely in Stockholm. While Sweden’s status was officially neutral during the second world war, with Norway and Denmark both occupied by the Germans and Finland fighting on the same side, against Russia, the authorities permitted German soldiers to travel on Swedish trains while their presence was felt in the capital. The city is seen through the eyes of demobbed Norwegian sailor Kai Fredly. The son of a communist, Kai was compelled to travel to Spain to serve on the side of the Republican Government, yet when he returns to his home country, he discovers that his brother has been killed, after apparently working as a Nazi conspirator. It soon becomes clear that he has been spared imprisonment or worse as those connected to his brother wish him to avenge his death. In Stockholm Kai realises that it’s hard to find friends, even among his compatriot exiles when he doesn’t know which side they are on or on whose behalf he’s working.
The other key character in the story is a writer by the name of Jomar Kraby who is hired by the exiled Norwegian Government to discover what happened to one of their couriers who died on the border with Sweden. As it evident that the path of the two men will cross at some stage as the novel weaves towards a climax, yet on what terms and whether hostilities will endure is unclear. At times, the story has the feel of a classic black and white espionage film as secret rendezvous take place with charming, mysterious, or beautiful femme fatales, potentially luring Kai into dangerous or compromising situations as well as suspects being tailed on foot in broad daylight through city streets. At times it is captivating, at times a little convoluted as Dahl’s storytelling tends to straddle multiple time periods rather than featuring both in the same timeframe. I didn’t foresee the big reveal and liked a little ambiguity at the tail end of the story.
Tumblr media
The Lazarus Solution has the feel of a classic which excites and educates. Much as I enjoy the author’s series, I feel I do prefer his historical standalones as it releases any restraints around time period and character. While each of these novels has been very distinctive, I perhaps feel that I would wish for in his future publications is a story with a female lead character which would provide a welcome contrast.
The Book:
Summer, 1943. Daniel Berkåk, who works as a courier for the Press and Military Office in Sweden, is killed on his last cross-border mission to Norway.
Demobbed sailor Kai Fredly escapes from occupied Norway into Sweden, but finds that the murder of his Nazi-sympathiser brother is drawing the attention of the authorities on both sides of the border.
The Norwegian government, currently exiled in London, wants to know what happened to their courier, and the job goes to writer Jomar Kraby, whose first suspect is a Norwegian refugee living in Sweden … a refugee with a past as horrifying as the events still to come … a refugee named Kai Fredly…
Both classic crime and a stunning exposé of Norwegian agents in Stockholm during the Second World War, The Lazarus Solution is a compulsive, complex and dazzling historical thriller from one of the genre's finest writers.
For fans of Sebastian Faulks, Lars Mytting, Mick Herron and Robert Harris.

The author:
One of the fathers of the Nordic Noir genre, Kjell Ola Dahl was born in 1958 in Gjøvik. He made his debut in 1993, and has since published fourteen novels, the most prominent of which is a series of police procedurals cum psychological thrillers featuring investigators Gunnarstranda and Frølich. In 2000 he won the Riverton Prize for The Last Fix and he won both the prestigious Brage and Riverton Prizes for The Courier in 2015. His work has been published in 14 countries, and he lives in Oslo.
Many thanks to Anne Cater at Random Things Tours for inclusion on the blog tour and Orenda Books for providing me with an advance copy of The Lazarus by Kjell Ola Dahl. Please check out the other reviews of this book on the blog tour as shown below.

Mark Monnone of Monnone Alone (also Last Leaves, ex-Lucksmiths, etc.) goes over the bumpy bits with us.
When Monnone Alone’s third album, Stay Foggy, was released last year I played it incessantly. The songs wormed their way into my brain and (thankfully) would not leave. i needed to know how the songs came together so I emailed Mark and sent him some interview questions. He said he was happy to do it, but.......the answers never came. As turns out Mark took his surfboard and headed to the furthest reaches of Finland to do “some thinking.”
As soon as he came back, a year to the date, he sent me the answers! Anywho, Stay Foggy was one of my favorite records of last year, full of top-class, charming tunes about love and anxiety. If you haven’t heard it yet please do yourself a favor. In the meantime, give a read to this interview while you’re sippin’ your Sunday coffee. As Mark would say, “Cheers!”
Tumblr media
Da’ boys!
How and when did the songs begin to come together for Stay Foggy?
After our album Summer of the Mosquito came out, I had been working on demoing some new songs with my drummer friend Gus Franklin in late-2019 but a few months later, as the Melbourne lockdowns came into effect, I could feel that process becoming derailed so I decided to put those songs on the shelf until I could spend some time in a room again with Gus and my other bandmates Louis and Joe, which seemed rather unlikely for the minute. Around that time, my friend Jane McCracken had offered me the use of her cassette 8-track to mess around on since she wasn't using it, so I figured it was a good time to go into hermit-mode and dive into a fresh batch of songs. I've never had anything that resembled a home studio before, so it was all an exciting new experience for me. I just started listening through years worth of voice memos from my phone and seeing if any ideas could stretch out into actual songs, and as it turned out, they started to take shape pretty quickly. Lyrics were flowing freely which is unusual for my songwriting, as it's usually a massive wrestling match to come up with anything that I'm happy with. Having the opportunity to try out any idea at almost any time of day kept the whole thing fresh and bubbling along with good momentum. I've never written a dozen songs that quickly before, within like six months. It was fun to be fully immersed like that – like, humming a little idea whilst cooking dinner and and voila! three minutes later, a new bassline is recorded, the song is finished and dinner (a little overcooked perhaps) is served. Actually, my daughter – who was three at the time – should be credited as co-songwriter on a few songs as she was a constant source of inspiration with her little melodies and kooky lyrics; I think she might write the whole next album. But yeah, the 8-track cassette recorder – what a happy revelation. It seemed everyone in Melbourne was getting back to basics and teaching themselves the art of sourdough baking or making mosaics or something so it seemed the pandemic provided the perfect opportunity to reacquaint myself with some quality outdated technology like the Tascam 688. This tape machine is a beast and was apparently the height of home multitrack recording technology right before it was superseded by digital in the early 90s. I was kinda familiar with Jane's machine as I'd recorded on it seventeen years prior when Drew Cramer was in Melbourne for the summer of 2003/4 and we'd recorded a Mosquitoes album in my loungeroom. So I knew it had mojo or good juju or whatever tape machines have. Whatever it was, I liked it... and I still do. Sorry Jane!
How did you come up with the title, Stay Foggy? During the 2020 lockdowns, we were permitted one hour a day outside our homes to do exercise and go grocery shopping. It was predominantly during the wintertime, so upon stepping outside my house my glasses would invariably fog up – and wearing a mask would ensure prolonged fogginess. I got used to seeing things through the hazy lens and I kinda liked it. It reminded me of being in San Francisco during 9/11... there was a bunch of us – Hotdog, Birdy, the Hound and myself – staying at our friend Jaime's place in the Mission District so once we were awoken and had taken in the news coverage for a few hours we decided to get outta the city – we drove up to visit our pal Dusty in Arcata which is in northern California and when we arrived, the bay there and entire town were enshroud in fog and remained that way for a few days. Very eerie setting for the impending armageddon. The song Stay Foggy kinda evokes that sense of unease and uncertainty whilst being securely wrapped up in the warmth of deep friendship. That's how I perceive the vibe of the whole album, so 'Stay Foggy' seemed to be a fitting title.
Tumblr media
How long did it take for the recording of the basic tracks? Started in April and finished up around December. Guitars, bass, vocals, various percussion (mostly bongos, cardboard boxes, guitar cases and tambourines) and a little Yamaha organ thing. My first time really playing any proper keyboards. I've totally forgotten it all now but that was a fun thing to learn.
I notice a lot of themes of isolation, anxiety and a general feeling of uneasiness in the lyrics. Is that correct? I would imagine at least partially due to COVID lockdown? Yeah, absolutely. My goal was to embrace those insular feelings – some recent, others more nostalgic – and spin them out with an uplifting bubblegummy beach party vibe that kids can roast vegan marshmallows to!
Had you known Gareth Parton (who mixed the record) previously? If not how did that come about that he got involved? Gareth first appeared in town, having moved from the UK, sometime in the early-noughties. He was trying to keep his studio chops up whilst finding his feet in a new city and so was approaching bands at the pub after seeing them play and offering his music production services for free. He was quite humble in telling us he'd worked with these great indie bands like Bearsuit and Pete & The Pirates, and didn't really go on about how he'd worked with all these bigger bands like Foals, The Breeders, Beta Band and Spiritualized, nor how he'd produced several albums for his brother's band The Go! Team... so it was lucky our friend and bandmate Louis Richter took him up on the offer and had Gareth record his band Mid-State Orange. Gareth and Louis became good mates and now we're all really tight and have worked with him a bunch – he recorded our earlier album Summer of the Mosquito and also albums for Last Leaves and the calypso-inspired party band that I play bass in – Mighty Duke & The Lords.
Tumblr media
First song on the album.
What’s next? Have you been playing any shows?  If not any on the horizon? We have been pretty quiet since covid knocked the wind out of us, but getting ready to head out on a short tour here later in October. Just five dates, but it'll be fun to stink up the van again finally, after two tourless years! We actually had a US tour in the works for earlier this year – a week of Californian shows with Boyracer, Kids on a Crime Spree and Artsick – but the wheels fell off that one for us, sadly. Hope we can make it over next year...
Tell us about some Aussie bands that you’re excited about that we may not know about? Pretty excited about all the bands we're playing with on our tour: Victoria are a Sydney band with an early-Flying Nun vibe who feature folks from Smudge and Songs; Kilroy are a post-punk group from Canberra with cool lyrics, Lily Morris is an impressive young folky songwriter with a chooglin' band, and Table Band are a brand new crew formed by Alec from ambient sun-addled surfer types Blue Divers who released one of our favourite albums last year. Cool Sounds also had a great album out last year and there's a new one coming this week. Actually, that whole family tree of bands – Partner Look, Snowy, Emma Russack & Lachlan Denton... they all put out killer albums in the past year. Redspencer, Dag and Dodda Rivka are three awesome bands who, likewise, share members and have had albums out in the past year also. Way Dynamic have their excellent debut album out soon – for fans of Chris Cohen or maybe Tenniscoats by way of Carole King and Steely Dan... I'm also excited to hear the new Martin Frawley (ex-Twerps) album, out soon. Oh and Lucy Roleff & Lehmann B. Smith recently released an album of shimmering folk gems entitled Dark Green. Check it out all, Tim – I know you don't like sleeping!
….and how is the label Lost and Lonesome, doing? What releases are you excited about? We were recently involved in the posthumous release of Zac Denton's demos and unreleased recordings. Zac was a member of The Ocean Party, Ciggie Witch, Pregnancy, No Local and Hobbie Farm amongst others, and had a stack of amazing material stashed aside when he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of 24, four years ago. I was so chuffed L&L was invited along for this release – working alongside Osborne Again, Emotional Response and Spunk! on releasing the double-LP of these beautiful, unique songs. On the horizon though: the debut album from Hot Coppers – Gareth Parton's first recordings of his own music in 20+ years, for fans of B&S, The Go-Betweens, Burt Bacharach and The Charlatans); the long-awaited new Mid-State Orange album(!), the band now featuring members of The Zebras, Last Leaves and Fred Astereo; plus a few other nice surprises from folks who may have been involved with bands like The Cat's Miaow, The Cannanes and Flywheel... but I've already said too much methinks.
Tumblr media
Cover of Mark’s previous LP from 2019
What are your top 10 desert island discs? At this very minute, let's say: Jonathan Richman 'Jonathan Sings' Television Personalities 'And Don't the Kids Just Love it' Dear Nora 'Mountain Rock' Philippe DeBarge with The Pretty Things 'Rock St Trop' Little Wings 'Light Green Leaves' Lou Reed 'Coney Island Baby' The Cannanes 'Love Affair With Nature' The Pastels 'Mobile Safari' The Ladybug Transistor 'The Albermarle Sound' The Apples in Stereo 'Tone Soul Evolution' ... and maybe one more – Sonny & The Sunsets 'Hit After Hit' ... one last quick one – The Chills 'Brave Words' ... I'm sorry!! – The Wedding Present 'Bizarro' ... gah!!!
BONUS QUESTION: Will there be another Last Leaves record? Yes! Thanks for asking, Tim. Marty Donald has written a stack of great new songs and we've been rehearsing again and getting ready to record really soon!

The price of electricity dropped into negative territory on Sunday, reports Iltalehti, citing data from power exchange Nord Pool. This was the second time electricity prices were on the negative side in Finland since last Wednesday, when spring flooding super-charged hydropower production.
With spot prices in Finland less than zero for most of Sunday, households with electricity contracts tied to the market price could see some savings on their next bill, according to IL.
According to Jukka Ruusunen, CEO of grid operator Fingrid, electricity is currently being produced to such an extent that it's pushing down the price.
"Now there's a lot of electricity production available — nuclear power, wind power, and even solar power in central Europe. It's not flexible when the price drops, so now producers are paying to produce it," he explained.
Record numbers move from Russia
Last year a total of 6,003 Russians moved to Finland, which is more than in the aftermath of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Kauppalehti looks into who the record number of Russian citizens are who arrived in Finland last year.
Family ties, jobs and studies are still the most common reasons for Russians to seek residence in Finland, according to the business daily. There was, however, an uptick in Russians applying for specialist work permits. As Finnish companies withdrew from Russia, some of their employees applied for residence permits to work in Finland.
"Last year, there were around 7,800 residence permit applications from Russians, compared to 4,800 in 2021," Pauliina Helminen, a permit director at Immigration Service (Migri) told KL.
Russians meanwhile accounted for 1,172 of some 5,800 asylum applications filed in 2022.
Cool early June
The graduation weekend ahead may be cool for those celebrating the end of their school year.
"There is no major rainfall expected, but the weekend is not going to be warm, sunny, or dry either," Foreca meteorologist Joanna Rinne told Ilta-Sanomat.
She said that temperature-wise, it's generally likely to be around 10 degrees Celsius across Finland on Saturday. Forecasts show variable clouds for the first weekend of June, which also means that the sun may occasionally peak out in some parts of the country.
