31st sun of the 6th umbral moon, 1578

"my nameday came and went, and the start of a new year is upon us. as my time in the hinterlands comes to a close, I carry with me a lingering sense of regret. this place was abandoned overnight, left to be reclaimed by the wilds of the region. so much history here, so many countless memories etched in the weed-infested cobblestone walkways I tread on. they were left to fade like it was nothing, like it wasn't a hard decision to make to uproot yourself and your family from the only home they ever knew. in the disquieting silence of the crumbled halls I rummaged through, picking at whatever scrap and morsel I could find like a scavenger skittering over its next festered meal, I'm troubled by racing thoughts. my kith and kin fled from here, much like we did that night. fled from the home we shared, and in doing so, we threw away all the memories of our time there. we forgot about dad. like these ruins, his memories are still there in that carcass of a house, his essence clinging to the air like the stale, water-logged tomes left exposed to still waters. he cannot leave there, that is his gravesite. while we never found the body, we all knew he was gone. the whispers of him having drowned down by the cove in his despair made way to my ears as a child. I carried a heavy weight of guilt in the years since. but grief isn't a common emotion among us, we're taught to be inscrutable and unattached, for if we give way to emotions, we're no better than the eorzeans turning on one another due to petty disputes. we watch our neighbors with thinly-veiled disgust, believing we're superior for relying on pure intellect than basic human sentimentality. anyroad, mum left us not long after that, and gammy was our guardian since then. I watched her leave us all behind, but we weren't buildings. we were living, breathing, humans—children. to watch her cast us aside so easily, it stuck in my craw for the longest time. she couldn't confront us with the truth, so she took the truth with her, wherever she went. sharlayans have a tiresome habit of forsaking everything if it means to avoid conflict... but I suppose I'm no different."

When seeking updates about my passport (I'm aware it will likely be rejected) this morning, I saw that QIA+ had been removed from the Department of State's website. Previous instances of LGBTQIA+ have now been changed to LGB.

While federal institutions ban Black History Month and other observances as part of the new regime's ongoing efforts to strip away diversity, equity and inclusiveness, we must remember to keep celebrating; not with forced joy, but fire and rage. Do not go quietly. Fight for yourselves and those beside you. Chase your shouts for solidarity with true acts of advocacy, education, and service.
