Every time I see that particular photo floating around I'm reminded "Oh yeah, I want to draw Gaius and the Werlyt kids like that" and forget. Until today!
I've been wanting to draw this one since last summer. 😭

If you take a step back and really look at them, Gaius (in ARR, at least) and Edmont are actually pretty interesting foils for each other, because one is a deeply, deeply awful person who is an incredible father, while the other is one of the most moral and kind people on the planet who's given all of his kids massive, incredibly self-destructive complexes.
Like, Gaius genuinely adores all his children, even Livia, despite her incredibly disturbing fixation on him, and is very obviously gutted by the idea that they'd go to war without him to protect them, while Edmont very clearly only cared about Haurchefant, foisting all the First Born Son responsibilities on Artoirel but giving him absolutely none of the respect, and hardly remembering that Emmanellain even exists save to scold him.
Hell, even Haurchefant, even though he was the favorite, didn't get particularly better treatment because of Countess Fortemps (incredibly understandable) hatred of him, which led to Haurche becoming self-destructively self-sacrificing to try and get at least a little of the respect he deserves from his peers, and eventually lead to his death at The Vault.

When you think about it, Praetorium and Porta Decumana are really just the world's most awkward barbecue hosted by two sad dads. Lahabrea brought his ex and didn't tell anyone, there was drama, everything kinda blew up, and now everything is burnt and Gaius is just spouting his political opinions everywhere.

You ever thinking about the parallels between Gaius and Alfonse and how Alfonse is probably one of the few people who was ever actually proud of Gaius in some way? Yeah, me too.
Alt text below the cut.
A one page comic about Gaius Baelsar titled "Like Father, Like Son."
The first panel shows children lined up in a row giving an authoritative figure, bathed in light, the imperial salute. Behind them is a building with a sign out front that reads "Orphanage" in a Garlean-inspired font. There is also a Latin motto on the sign that reads"Spectemur Agendo" that means "Let us be judged by our acts." The authoritative figure and all the children save Gaius are tinted red. A shadow of Legatus Gaius looms behind his child-self. The head's shadow is cast over the sign board. Red, handwritten text above Gaius reads "I will make you proud."
The second panel shows Legatus Gaius kneeling before the throne which appears to be occupied by the late Emperor Solus. Gaius is also doing the imperial salute. Red, handwritten text around Gaius reads, "Have my actions made you proud? Have *I* made you proud?" He is tinted red while Solus remains colorless and bathed in light.
The last panel is larger than the other two combined and shows a dying Diamond Weapon projecting the spirit of Alfonse Baelsar. Gaius is on his knees in despair, Heirsbane dropped lifelessly from his hand as he basks in the light of his deceased ward. There is blue handwritten text that is a quote from Alfonse in the Sorrow of Werlyt questline. It reads, "I am proud to call myself your son."

The anesthetic never set in and I'm wondering where The apathy and urgency is that I thought I phoned in No it's not so pleasant and it's not so conventional It sure as hell ain't normal but we deal, we deal.
Context: hey, this is another new little guy of mine that just rolled off the OC conveyor belt, his name is X'verha and he's a formerly willing Garlean conscript. He was one of the lead scientists on the Weapons project, but protested when he saw what was happening to the pilots. And suddenly Garlemald didn't need him so badly anymore. There's more but we'll leave it there for now. :) Just know that he knew Gaius' kids before all this.

Souls Weighed Down by Gravity
“I’m turning on the KLEOS now, Cid.” “Roger that, Mihri. Reading the KLEOS as active.” She closed her eyes and breathed deeply and evenly. All around her, the cockpit of the warmachina was lit up with holographic screens reporting on every aspect of her surroundings, but none of that mattered right now. The hairpin-like device on her forehead was warm, and she could feel it guiding her toward the familiar mental state of the Echo. Hear… Feel… That wasn’t it. She needed to go deeper. The machine was thrumming above her, below her, around her, like a living being. Focus on its heart, Cid had said, and your own will follow. She let herself sink into it. The thrumming was inside her, now, and she opened her eyes, raised her hand, and saw the metal fingers flex as she moved them. She turned her head to the side and looked towards the catwalk at eye level. Cid and the other Ironworks technicians were so small compared to her now. “I’ve got it,” she said. A complete rewrite of the Sorrows of Werlyt questline, focusing on Milisandia and the other pilots.
Chapter 1: Crossing the Rubicon
Rating: Teen and Up Audiences (subject to change)
Fandom: Final Fantasy XIV
Relationships: Cid Garlond & Warrior of Light, Milisandia & Warrior of Light, Avilina/Milisandia
Characters: Warrior of Light, Cid Garlond, Milisandia, Avilina

Vierapril Day 14: Favourite Duty
I'm fond of all the Weapons trials, but Emerald Weapon really felt like the first Trial in the game where they really cranked up the difficulty, and I loved it from my first run to current day! The second phase's music has NO right to go so hard, it's just such a cool trial, all of it, and my favourite fight of the Weapons! I adore a lot of trials but this one remains up there whenever someone asks me which I like best.
